This was Def Leppard at their most fierce, and most AC/DC -ish. In fact, Mutt Lange produced this album just after he had finished recording AC/DC's Back in Black. Similar sounding albums, though Def Leppard were a bit more melodic, and less rooted in basic blues.

DL’s best album, period. Excellent beginning to end! On Through The Night was too inconsistent, Pyromania kept to this formula but their rawness and ferocity was clearly losing ground to Mutt Lange’s over-production. High ‘n’ Dry was the perfect balance tho.

Let's not forget the biggest difference between High N Dry and Pyromania: The replacement of Pete Willis with Phil Collen. Yes, Pete Willis wrote most of Pyromania with Steve Clark. But they lost a raw, aggressive rhythm player and picked up a more technical player with a radio-friendly sound. Once he put his touches on the album, everything changed. Mutt wanted to make a rock version of "Thriller" (meaning every song could be a chart hit). Adding Phil made things easier for Mutt to try that. Loved them both, though.

That's the way it was when I was a teenager, in mid to late 80's, we put our money together, have somebody that was old enough to get us some drink, and everybody just hung out at a friends house, listened to music, played cards, etc. Nobody argued or had any fights, just enjoying a Saturday night, great time man, I'm 50 now, and I think teenagers today miss out, on just hanging with their friends, and not causing any trouble, just learning social skills how to talk to people or handle situations in the right way. Sorry for the rant, but this music brings back great memories, and good times man.

High and Dry is by far my favorite of their albums, and only their second.

Soundtrack: on the way to the party with your boys in a souped-up Nova with a case of brew and an ounce of green.

When Mutt Lange took over (over)producing, starting with High and Dry. Although still mostly rocking hard on Pyromania, they began to lose their raw edge with Hysteria and beyond - good for their bank accounts, not so much for early fans. The Lyrics suffered as well, getting more sappy with every release. Thanks for bringing back kickass Leppard. Here are a couple more great cuts you missed:

They only had two really full charge rockers in their arsenal and this is one of 'em, the other one is "Rock Rock Til You Drop" which just about took my head off as a kid...

It’s great you hit some of their early stuff, that’s where I believe their best songs are! You should check out “Lady Strange” and “Mirror Mirror” if you get the chance since I don’t think you reacted to them yet, off the same album High N’ Dry. Their debut album On Through The Night has some great stuff too like “Rock Brigade”, “Wasted” and “Overture” to name a few!

Second to Mirror Mirror -- great tune that doesn't get much attention compared to the rest of the album. Sort of like the Comin' Under Fire, Action Not Words and Billy's Got a Gun on Pyromania

Keep this rock alive Jamel. Before 1990 most of the music was fire, a banger, classic and awesome.

You gotta do "Me & My Wine", Jemel, lol. Also, the UK video version of "Pour Some Sugar On Me" w/ the members of Tesla included. ;)

The first few albums were so amazing..and then Hysteria came and ruined their sound.
