High and dry is a saying, but one thing you have to keep in mind about 80s bands: they'll base the song around a catchy phrase. It doesn't have to really mean anything and they're not always telling a story. Sometimes it's just party music and you're putting more thought into what it means than the guy who wrote it did.

They completely avoided the "sophomore slump" with this album. Solid front to back. The last track on side B of the vinyl: "No No No" repeats "...no no no no...." until you lift the needle off the record.

Technically, "High n' dry" was a bigger seller than their debut album 'On through the night' - that first record did OK, but was not a major commercial hit. When 'Pyromania' (and then 'Hysteria') became hits, it pushed sales up for the 1st album.
Same thing happened w/ Bon Jovi's debut album after 'Slippery when wet' became a hit... Metallica's whole catalog sold millions after the success of the 'black' album... Kiss saw their first 3 albums sell gold after 'Alive!' was a hit in 1975... Aerosmith's early records sold well after 'Toys in the attic' became a hit.
None of those record were commercial successes initially, until later records hit big...

Saw them in Boston on this tour. Both bands were amazing that night! It was my second concert, but is still one of my favorites. I didn't have as much interest in them when Pete Willis left. I was happy that he had written stuff for "Pyromania", but Joe Elliot's attitude about Willis, and crushing a Polaroid of him through a grate in the "Photograph" video was a bit too much for the Pete Willis fan in me. 🤘

Many people don't realize that all of their music from their first EP to their latest singles encompass their musical influences of their youth from Zeppelin to Sweet and all of it is real Def Leppard. Their albums are all great in different ways. You just have to understand what the band is all about.

A mystery that has plagued me for decades, solved at last! 🤣 The real answer is that Def Leppard has never let logic stand in the way of a cool-sounding lyric.

Def Leppard's early stuff like this was SOO much better than their later over produced and commercialized stuff. Kind of like when Krokus had One Vice at a Time and it kicked ass over their later stuff.

High and Dry is a good song. The album is great. And there are excellent songs on there. For me, it's their best stuff. Though there is a lot of great on Pyromania and some great on Hysteria. Overall High & Dry is heaviest best stuff they made and my fav album. Glad you finally got around to checking out a tune from it.
Mirror Mirror is my #1 fav. Others from that album that are also kickass: Let it Go, Bringin on the Heartbreak, Lady Strange, You Got Me Runnin.

This is from their 2nd album, which was pretty much the last record they did before they became over-produced and over-polished. This was the end of their NWOBHM years, and they disowned the "metal" label shortly after this, saying they have more in common with Duran Duran than they do with heavy metal. This of course is also after the British metal crowd pelted them with piss bottles at a festival 😂

    • @neillenet291

Their first two albums were good (fantastic even) yet after this they went the Whitesnake route and went chasing the American rock market at the time, which was dominated by hair metal. It’s one of the main reasons why they are only really remembered in the States whereas their homeland moved on quite quickly from that sound of rock music and concentrated on other bands that developed, like The Smiths, The Cure, The Stone Roses, the whole Madchester, Ska and Shoegaze scene etc

Dehydrated, laugh. Haha. Others have talked about what this song means, but I will say this: I still think that the raw power of their first album, On Through the Night, simply can't be beat. It's still far and away my favorite Def Leppard album. But for a second album, this was fantastic. I went out and bought it as soon as it was released. And then of course they released Pyromania and all hell broke loose. Here are a couple tracks from their first album that I think really rock hard. The first one, Wasted, has one of my top all-time favorite metal riffs. It's just so heavy and perfect. And then the second one, Rocks Off, is on that first album as well, but it is a live cut from one of their shows and so you have all the audience noise and everything but it really blazes and it also has a crazy fast swing beat which adds even more energy. Both songs have wailing guitar solos in them as well. I have a feeling you guys would like them, particularly Lex.

To be left "high and dry" or to be "high and dry" is an old expression meaning to be put in a difficult position, or to be in a difficult position, a tight spot, ect.
The song is a play on words.... He is literally high or drunk and with no place to go or stranded or possibly without his woman.
    It's that simple.
