the fact that bulova finally made a classy looking watch is point one. They put a sapphire on it, two. The precisionist movement, three. Fantastic! It's not a daily wear simply because of the mixed polished and brushed surfaces. The polished will scratch, the brushed with polish making it look just like a mixed bag and difficult to restore. So I can understand the crown, WR and lume. overall, It's a good step. They could take this watch, make a sturdy daily wear version, all brushed bracelet or a strap, excellent lume and 100+ wr, would be killer.
That last paragraph is a great suggestion, I'd love to see them use this movement in more interesting and different pieces, cheers for the comments 🍻 😎
I like that idea! They really should do more styles and variety with this movement, they have a winner here. I'm also hoping that in future they could possibly invent some kind of feature mix of this movement and Citizen's Eco Drive solar, as Citizen owns Bulova.
Wow, bought this watch last year and am loving every moment that I wear it. The red dial is an absolute smash with the contrasting bright white second hand. The bright red markers also are cool and the bracelet is comfortable. I am hoping that Bulova could make one in bright blue that is similar to their 1970's watches in the neon blue. I will be on wait list even if they abuse me like Rolex did, LOL. :-)
Fabulous review of this lovely looking watch, thanks. I think I'll buy one (I already have a couple of 262 KHz Bulovas, can't get enough of that sweeping second hand!). The trick I think they missed: "Jet Star" is a great name ...SO PUT IT ON THE BLOODY DIAL! My Bulova Sea King has its name on the dial, just as you'd expect, and I'd love this one just a little bit more if it proudly displayed that mad-but-brilliant Jet Star name.
Haha it is mesmerising 😎....I agree, I'd rather see jet star on the dial than 262khz, it would be a small but worthy improvement. Cheers for the comments and stopping by 🙂🍻
I picked up the silver dial special edition. I love this watch. I set my mechanical watches to this one when I’m not wearing it. Nice content, keep it up
I prefer the bracelet. I placed the watch on a black leather strap with red stitching, love the look. I used the leather strap that came on the Jet Star on my Bulova chronograph Surfboard, another great look.
Got the anthracite (black) version from the UK. Bought it for the claimed accuracy. I've only had it 15 days but so far (in Canada) and I can't discern any time loss or gain. Using an internet atomic time server to check it several times a day. I'm impressed, my old quartz watch was losing 35 seconds a month. A watch that tells the correct time--what a concept.
Awesome isn't it? I'm still around +1 second... the black version looks great online and I'm surprised it was a UK only release. You'd think it would do well worldwide 🙂👍
I saw one of these last week at a department store whilst shopping. The first thing I thought was that you would love that dial color. The watch is very nice, but the price is at my upper limit for a quartz, and I’m not a fan of the crown not being screw down. Otherwise it’s a stunner. Great review as always.
I picked up this version in the, "Merlot," a few months ago. I've long been a fan of the Precisionist movement. I'm glad Bulova is moving more towards their back catalogue than their more brutalist and let's be honest non functional diver style cases they've been churning out for the last few years. Battery life for these movements are about three years. The biggest con for me on this reissue is the white sweeping seconds hand. Wht they didn't just leave it polished silver is beyond me.
I purchased the limited edition model. Really comfortable, legible date, and of course has that mesmerizing second hand sweep. But, like you said the lume is garbage. However,it’s not a diver or field watch so it doesn’t really bother me that much. Wish the second hand was a tad thicker. You can pick these up fairly inexpensive now.
Aren't they just? I'm not at 6 yet but I think 5 and I have no doubt it'll not be the last. They're releasing so many great models at the moment. Thanks for the comments 🙂👍
Love these new Jet Star / Precisionist movement watches. I wish the second hand on my 43mm Lunar Pilot was as smooth as these are. Even though it's the same 262KHz beat rate, its nowhere near as smooth as these Jet Stars appear on video at least.
How do you find the 43mm lunar overall? I keep getting tempted to grab one in the blue and white color scheme... It's been on my mind for a while! Interesting to hear of the seconds hand differences, I just assumed it would be the same... the jet star is definitely as it looks on video 🙂👍
Great review! I like the Jet Star UK version because of it's better readability. I plan to purchase this year but really hoping that Bulova can partner with their parent company Citizen to combine solar with Precisionist so no worries about the 2 year battery issue.
I have this watch now for a bit more than 2 months. The accuracy is just fascinating, the last 2 months it is a bit less than 1 second. So I guess 5 seconds per year are possible.
@@kungula it's the same series of movement - Precisionist - so both are high precision quartz and same technology utilised... but as the lunar pilot has the chronograph function I believe they will be different movements.
Love this red dial version and I am very tempted to get back into quartz after being put off them with experience of Tag and their crap quartz movements.
I have this one the wrist over a month and it hasnt lost 1 second! This is more accurate than the GS Quartz at a 5th of the price and a smooth second hand unlike the GS. Dont buy into the GS hype machine this movement is better!
I have the black dial UK version. The bracelet is a little too shiny for my taste, so i put it on black leather and i think it looks good. Mine loses about 1 second a month. Very impressive.
Its one of the best. Not having 2K to plunk down on a watch isnt a reason one shouldn't enjoy this smooth of a sweep. I have a Spring Drjve Transocean, but wouldn't mind one of these. Im mainly a Seiko guy,but im about to pick one of those Eco Drive Fugu from Citizen as another "Grab and Go" quartz. I have 2 Casioak,1Darth Tuna,Arnie, and aforementioned Spring Drive as my quartz collection
Nice, those transoceans are lovely! But yep agreed it's so good to finally have a more reasonably priced smooth sweep. Interesting to hear how you get on with the Fugu, I had the auto (review elsewhere on the channel) and I found it a really good watch in most ways... But for whatever reason, I never quite fully clicked with it and sold it on a few months after the video. Cheers for the comments 😎🍻
It's strange. I have an Accutron 11 (Lobster) reissue with a push pull crown and it has a claimed water resistance of 100 meters (the chronograph version has a screw down crown !
I bought the gold one on a leather with a fume mustard dial . It is stunning . I hate the bracelet it looks cheap I am looking for a brushed 20mm bracelet that goes with a fading yellow and brown dial
$600 is a lot for me but man I really want one. Idc about the lume because I have a Diver and some Indiglo watches if I know I'll be in a low lighting area.
I'm not a big fan of quartz because that 1 tick per second just annoys me. However, this Jet Star is as smooth as a Seiko Spring Drive which I know I will find mesmerising. I'm going to grab a silver one today (provided it doesn't look stupidly small on my Lunar Pilot-sized wrist).
@@nextonthewrist Well, I'm pretty bummed out. A Jet Star doesn't work on a Lunar Pilot wrist. It looked like a happy meal toy on my wrist, it wasn't even close to being big enough and looked terrible on me. I had to drive about an hour to get to an AD that actually had it in stock but as soon as I put it on, I knew right away that it was way too small. Initially, my heart said "Get it anyway!" and I was going to but I put it on my wrist a second time and I just knew that buying it would have been irresponsible. See, my wrists are flat and broad rectangles with pretty square corners. They're not really round at all and that's just my bone structure because my wrists aren't fat, they're just skin, tendon and bone. They're about 7¼" around but they're 40mm tall and 60mm wide with abrupt corners. My sweet spot is a minimum of 44mm and a maximum of 47mm. Like, I'm wearing my "night watch" right now, a watch I never wear during the day because it's only 42mm in diameter and looks quite small on me. I use it at night because it has tritium tubes so reading it is never an issue. I have a 44mm version of it on order so that should be better. Today was pretty harrowing though because today I learned that I cannot pull off a 40mm watch, the most common size in the industry. It really sucks because I wanted that watch so bad and the AD had marked it down to $626CAD from $895. The silver lining is that I knew better than to order it online, I knew that I had to try it on because the three main watches that I wear are a Bulova Lunar Pilot, a Tissot Seastar 2000 and an Invicta Grand Diver #3049. Those are 45mm, 46mm and 47mm respectiely and they fit pretty much perfectly. I'll just have to hope and pray that Bulova makes a "Jumbo Jet Star" for their Lunar Pilot customers because that second hand is just so beautifully mesmerising. Sure, I could just get one of their extant Precisionist models because they are big enough but they're just so damn UGLY! I mean, those dials are so busy that they make my eyes bleed. Other than the size (and the paltry 50m of WR), the silver Jet Star's dial is absolute perfection. Clean and fun but still classy. You know, my friends joke around about the "magic trick" that I do when I take a small clock (which is how they refer to my Lunar Pilot, Seastar 2000 and Grand Diver), strap it to my wrist and "Abracadabra!" it turns into a normal-looking wristwatch. I guess that Rumplestiltskin was right. Magic always comes with a price.
@@AvroBellow I'm sorry to hear it didn't work out, at least you know now for future. On the plus side for you a lot of the larger case sizes end up with much bigger discounts on grey markets like Joma etc. so you should be primed to get some great deals in this case diameter category. Keep enjoying the collecting 😎🍻
@@nextonthewrist That's true but the most beautiful and iconic watches are all around 40mm. I actually sent a message to Bulova about it. I asked them to make a 44mm version and call it the "Jumbo Jet Star" (pretty catchy name, eh?) and I pointed out to them that a crap-tonne of their Lunar Pilot customers would LOVE to get their hands on a silver-dialed Jet Star like the 96K112 with the royal and crimson accents. Bulova has a history of listening to consumers (like with the Lunar Pilot Mini) and they just might do it.
Hey Avrobello, Your wrist description sounds exactly like mine. I have 2 great recommendations for you. They also have the precisionist movement with that smooth sweep (sixteen beats per second), That's why it looks like the second hand is vibrating, high beat auto avg. 8 per sec and max at 10 per sec. (Zenith). The first recommendation is Bulova 96B349, 47mm wide by 52mm lug to lug, 300m water resist. Second recommendation is Bulova 96B228, 48mm wide by 55mm lug to lug, also 300m water resistance. Both very large with long sweeping second hand. Good luck to your finding a watch to match your wrist, we sound similar in your description except I'm 7.5. Those two fit me perfectly so I highly recommend. Cheers!
Two years is about right for the battery life. My moon watch battery lasted about two years. Never used the stopwatch either. I would prefer a mechanical version. My devil diver is very accurate and no battery to die at the worst possible moment.
I do like the devil diver a lot, I had a green one for a short while 👌 ...Batteries, always the drawback of quartz, at least without solar 😅 I should probably set a calendar reminder for 18 months time and try to catch it before it stops 👀
I think it should be common sense, but you don’t get something for nothing: In this case, the highly active quartz movement burns more energy than most other quartz watches. Therefore, it has a bigger battery (thicker watch) and it needs more frequent battery changes. The manual suggests a battery change once a year.
I don't think it's a surprise to have a shorter battery life and no one is expecting engineering miracles .... but in any fair review I strongly believe it's vital to point out the pros and cons as they are 🙂👍
Pity that, like Longines, they insist on only making the larger case size on their HPQ as it rules these fantastic watches for a sizeable subset of the population. I wonder if they do this in Asia where 36mm is still a very popular size. Finally, the date window is terrible given the vibrancy of the dial; colour-match it or drop it IMHO... I would hope that the accuracy is far, far better than they quote as most of my Seiko + Citizen quartz pieces are +/- 1 sec per week or better and they are all far cheaper than this Bulova.
Sizing I agree, small would be a good addition and a colored date window is always nice. I don't know of any affordable quartz Seikos that keep anywhere near the accuracy of this, and I have had a fair few. Do you have a specific Seiko movement think is better? I lost 2 seconds in around 4 months with this Bulova which is absolutely remarkable, I'm hugely impressed by it and I think it offers the best of quartz technology at the price - obviously not competing vs. atomic clock sync and Bluetooth sync like the casios and citizens as that's cheating and not actually the quartz being accurate... 😆
I wear quartz watches about 50% of the time. I never had a problem with quartz watches, especially well made ones where the second hand hits the markers. My GMT watch is a Grand Seiko high accuracy quartz model, I could have gone for an automatic but I wanted a grab and go watch for travel. I also have a Casio Oceanus OCW-T4000, and of course owning a G-Shock is almost mandatory for a self respecting watch nerd😆
Agreed on all your points - it took me a while to really appreciate quartz but I'm glad I did. The Oceanus is a cracker and of course the grand seiko is top drawer. Thanks for stopping by 🙂🍻
Only speaking for myself here... I don't think a taper would work on this watch as the bracelet already looks very narrow (despite being a standard 20 wide) because of the case shape - it looks a lot narrower than it would on a rounded case.
I mean dress watches can be in the hundreds of thousands $$$ and you'd not expect a screw down, but for an everyday piece for me I prefer the added security 🙂👍
I have it over a month on the wrist and hasn't lost a second! I would say its to do with cost associated with those claims so they are playing it safe. This movement is as accurate as the GS quartz with a much nicer sweeping seconds hand. It's a no brainer! Just not hyped!
the fact that bulova finally made a classy looking watch is point one. They put a sapphire on it, two. The precisionist movement, three. Fantastic!
Waterproof 5 atm ? This is very bad with Bulova.
It's a shame not to make 10 atm and add versatility. 👍
Thanks for stopping by 🙂🍻
Great watch but still not as good as my Longines VHP, which has kept time to -1 second in one year!!
Very different styles, retro vs modern I guess... but I do really like the Longines VHP range though great choice 🙂👍
Does anyone find the bracelet too wide without a taper?
Only speaking for myself here... I don't think a taper would work on this watch as the bracelet already looks very narrow (despite being a standard 20 wide) because of the case shape - it looks a lot narrower than it would on a rounded case.
@@nextonthewrist Very true. It is fairly chunky.
It tapers down from 20mm to 18 mm at the clasp, subtle but it’s there. I’m very happy with mine👍🏻
@@dubhlinn1000 I didn't see that - good spot, you are 100% correct!
People pay big bucks for Rolexes that don’t have a screw down crowns.
I mean dress watches can be in the hundreds of thousands $$$ and you'd not expect a screw down, but for an everyday piece for me I prefer the added security 🙂👍

😮
They were even better when they were 10 seconds a year. Now the 262khz are 5 seconds a month…
I'm on target for within 10 seconds per year so far 👍
I have it over a month on the wrist and hasn't lost a second! I would say its to do with cost associated with those claims so they are playing it safe. This movement is as accurate as the GS quartz with a much nicer sweeping seconds hand. It's a no brainer! Just not hyped!
Gorgeous watch 👍 oh please stop with ding a ling it reminds me of Duck Berry 👍
Haha yes, will mute them next time out.
Nice but too big for my taste.
the movement is cool but it's a god damn ugly watch
😂 😂 😂 I'm sure they'll do more precisionist releases 🙏
