Almost a PERFECT vintage reissue ... Momentum SeaQuartz 30 review

  • I had seen this Momentum SeaQuartz a lot, all over the internet in-fact ... and at the end of last year I picked one up as it does look rather lovely. I wanted to make my own mind up though - and to come at this without any Magnum PI tinted sunglasses on.
    I erased all of the reviews I had seen last year from my head, and took this on holiday with me, starting with a clean slate to see if the hype is justified...

    Great reviews. I''m always amazed how Casio can produce the 200 meter $47 Duro with superb bezel action and a second hand that hits the marks, but other brands can't do it for often 10 or 20 times the price. The Duro's lume isn't great (I can dimly read the time after 7 hours, though) and I replaced the strap, but still.... The Momentum Sea Quartz nonetheless will be in my future. Great looks and features, along with the Magnum PI esthetic.

      @nextonthewrist  Před 2 měsíci +1

      Thank you - I don't know if the Duro has a specifically high torque quartz movement and casio have just nailed this at an incredibly low manufacturing price with some wizardry and won't share the secret with anyone else? Or maybe other movement makers are just deliberately keeping it as a feature of the higher tier quartz offerings 😆...but it is an engineering marvel at its price point. Lume paint is expensive so makes sense this is the area it's weak, at least it has an excuse at the price. Thanks for the comments 😎🍻

    3:21 I spin the bezel a few times under freshwater in a sink after a saltwater dive to break up any salt that may have crystallized during the initial drying out process. Without doing so, bezels have a tendency to feel rougher/harder to turn.

      @@nextonthewristOh, I forgot to compliment you! Great review, by the way!
      I’ve been rocking my Momentum Sea Quartz 30 Eclipse Stainless ever since it landed in my mailbox last week. I’m really enamored with this watch! I guess I was lucky with my second sweep hand: it hits every second marker on the nose (or as close to it as my aging eyes can tell).

      @@kevinong1735 great to hear you're really enjoying yours and thank you for the very kind words. For the seconds hand, I am pretty happy with mine, as it's a low torque quartz movement the seconds hand does have some play (turn it upside down, crown facing the floor, then 180 again and the seconds hand will shift slightly) but this is totally normal at the price point and its marginal. Sometimes I feel as watch reviewers we look at things closer than most normal humans would bother haha! There's not too many budget brands using high torque movements....I think Casio and Marathon are perhaps the two that come to mind. It's a minor point I guess to be aware of, but for me it's no deal breaker...like you I love mine and it gets plenty of wrist time. A great watch for sure 🙂

    Great review and great watch - bezel action on mine is much tighter and it aligns perfectly but the seconds hand misses almost every marker…I guess Momentum are a bit like a Seiko in terms of QC!😂

    I have one of these and most of what he says is spot on. My bezel is actually a lot better than what his experience is but that is the only difference I see in his experience and mine. I also have the bracelet as well as the tropic strap. Bot are excellent. I love mine. One of my favorite watches in my collection My best non solar quartz diver.

      Cheers for the comments - I do seem to have something a little wrong with my bezel I think, as lots of other owners seem to be doing a lot better here in the comments. I was curious about the bracelet so maybe I'll give it a go if you say it's decent ...since making the video this watch is my number 1 grab and go quartz, so despite a few shortcomings it's such a cool piece and I love it!

      I do like the retro look - but for much the same money, I’ll stick with my Dan Henry 1975. It has a VK31 movement, so a nice smooth second hand compared with the Ronda, great bezel action and excellent fit and finish. Only thing it lacks compared with the Momentum is the lume, which is terrible by comparison.

    • @nextonthewrist
      @nextonthewrist  Před 4 měsíci +1

      Nice - I had a Dan Henry many years ago and wasn't impressed with the quality of the watch but I'd definitely give them another go, nice to hear you're enjoying yours and it's a fair comparison....I did come close to picking up a 1975 (also great looking pieces) when they launched as do genuinely want to revisit. I think for this momentum you have to specifically value history - the same brand owner (as he was in 1977) re-manufacturing this exact watch off the original chronosport design drawings they kept hold of and assembling it in Canada otherwise it's perhaps not so appealing vs. some competitors 🙂👍
      Edit - forgot to add, I normally love a sweeping second hand but in this watch, as a recreation of something from the quartz crisis I actually think the janky ticks suit it and I weirdly like it 😆😂

    @jamese1596 Před 3 měsíci

    The only thing keeping me from buying one of these is the lack of “Chronosport” and the sailboat on the dial. If Momentum owns those trademarks, they are missing a real opportunity to do a special edition and charge more. I’d pay it.

      I'm not sure who has the rights to the name now, there was a long post about it on a forum I read and it gets very confusing with many companies involved depending on where in the world 🤔

    • @misterbianco6202
      @misterbianco6202 Před 3 měsíci +1

      I agree. If the original name was not possible (there was a German watch brand by Helmut Sinn with that name as well) at least the sail boat logo should have been possible and would have been nice. Anyway, the strange name Momentum along with the ugly typography and horrible M-logo are the only things that put me off from this otherwise nice watch.

  • @Roddy1965
    @Roddy1965 Před 3 měsíci +2

    Hard to complain about those things for a watch at $350 Cdn, isn't it??? These 'negatives' are simply what you should generally should expect when you get any watch at this price point. To consistently manufacture watches to make up for these 'negatives' will drive the price up. And if you get better than that at this price point, extra good! I mean, what are we comparing sub $1000 watches to, an Omega, Tudor, Squale? Seems perfectly good at the price on all counts.

    • @nextonthewrist
      @nextonthewrist  Před 3 měsíci +1

      In the interest of a fair and balanced review I'll always offer good and bad points, the bezel action on mine is especially poor vs $150-200 watches. There's no comparisons in here to anything unreasonable I don't think and as I said at the end, I do think it's a very cool watch. 👍

    • @nextonthewrist
      @nextonthewrist  Před 3 měsíci +1

      @@Theflyguy522 It is a good point - QC on these especially seems to be hit and miss. Based on the video comments there is varying degrees of seconds hand alignment and bezel actions reported from other owners 👍... I'd quite like to try a CWC soon, will try and pick one up this year. Do you have any CWC experience? Marathon is big here in a Canada but their legendary GSAR quartz watches are really in a totally different price category so I wouldn't compare.

    • @Theflyguy522
      @Theflyguy522 Před 3 měsíci

      @@nextonthewrist CWC QC has got a lot better. The last one I handled hit all the markers. It is the “British Military Watch” over here. The most consistent quartz QC I have seen comes from Casio. They seem to have mastered the crystal! 🤣👍

      I had this one in my basket but once you add the postage and tax, you're right, it's just too expensive for what it is. I'd pick this up used at half the price but in the UK it's just too expensive to buy new.
