Thank you! Yes! Finally some one posted a video that goes through the whole process and not just skip through it as if people watching have done it before. Good video. I have a '72 Honda cb175 and I have fully restored it after it's been sitting sense '86 and I've spent hours on hours on the internet, even downloaded a Manuel and as always I get lost and confused. I know our bikes are different but they are set up basically the same. Mine is twin cylinder that fire at the same time so thankful you helped me with my problem. Once again great job on the video!
I’m 14 and this helped me with my xl 125
Thank You. Finally completed the XL250 and now I am Tuning the motor up.
Way more descriptive than a Haynes manual. Helped me a lot with my CB125, cheers.
CB125 is what I'm on here for too!
Best video with a a -z explanation . no deviation easy to follow for the layman .
Thanks, just finished rebuilding my 74 XL350, and followed your video, and it actually fired up for the first time since 1992. Nice easy video to follow,
Great to hear!
Good video. Helped me sort my 1978 KZ200 this day: 05/22/2018. 40 years old.
Top video fella. Just set up the points on my restored UK spec XL250 K3 having watched your video. Bike started first kick !! could not believe it. Keep up the good work.
Thank you. Your video really helped me, especially learning to pull the wire connected to the points in order to use my vom meter to check the timing.
I’ve been guessing for 30 years... Thanks so much awesome video!!!
That worked so well!!! Thanks!! My timing was advanced a few degrees from the firing mark. Will fire it up in the morning!
I've never owned or worked on a motorcycle in my life...but a man can dream.
Live the dream! Buy and old beater to work and learn on, When it comes alive it won't be a dream any more. Its big fun.
Excellent video. It's not very often a video is this informative. Thanks!
Thank you Very much for this Video!! Been 30 years so since had do this Got my 1974 XL100 goin.!!
Thank you very much. My timing was about 180 degrees off. Just getting plate to apporximate position helped.
Awesome thanks for the info. Just picked up 2 xl250s. Have not gotten a spark this is my next step
I'm 15 and this helped me with my xl 175
how does it feel being 21?
Thanks heaps this video saved my ass from going to mechanics my xl125 should be going very soon thanks to you!
Just want to say thanks for this invaluable video. I just used it to guide me through setting my points on my old Kawi KZ200. Thanks.
Glad it helped!
Thanks for the video! I’m resurrecting my 74 TL125 at the moment.
Thank you .. I was confused til now .
Gotta say thanks my friends cb 100 hard start the advance mechanism was stuck someone had set timing way off due to this after watching this video I got flashback from my old Harley days and whoo hoo first kick. 72 CB 100 running like a top.
Thanks, helped me with getting my SL125 timing right.
thanks for the informative video. im restoring a 75 xl250 and its been a yr or so since i had to stop working on it so ive forgotten a few things. there is what appears to be a "vent" right above the points cover area. once you connect the tube to the nipple there, where does the other end go? does it just route to the ground like the battery tube?
Well now I know the points on my 74 s1 are bad! Thanks. Hoping I have an easier time with the xl250 im working on.
That was very helpful! My turn to try now.
That was really helpfull.. appreciate your work.
Great video! Thank you! It was really helpful!
I salute you kind sir slàinte I got spark today
Awesome video, very clear. Although I wanted to see you rip that XL in the snow!
Here you go. czcams.com/video/Q9goviKVHOU/video.html
Super helpful. Thank you.
From expirience its a good starting point, but buy a strobe light to set the timing accurately.
I agree. But they have to run first before you can use a timing light.
Thanks, this was a big help for my sl100 too
Glad it helped!
Great video. Points not opening at right point. And after hooking up the dwell as described, found out that the points were not hooked up to the base plate properly, washers were not in the proper place i guess shorting out points before the voltage was sent to the coil. Still not sure why if I turn the cam so the points are at the widest my line on flywheel is not at the T mark? I received a good spark on head and with starting fluid started right up. Thanks again. Now on to the carburetor.
Douglas Scott I'm glad it helped you. After you get your carburetor cleaned out (see "How to clean motorcycle carburetor jets" czcams.com/video/Ti1vWJT_n4Q/video.html You might want to check out "Dynamic motorcycle ignition timing" czcams.com/video/cJqfIuuHOuw/video.html to get you bike to run like a Swiss watch.
Pick-up coil is in the angle position of the crank? or the timing of the F-Mark Crank case of Magnet is given on any side of the pick-up coil magnet ?
Am I understanding correctly that on the fire mark the meter would be reading OL since the points are open? Or does the meter see it as 0 ohm?
How to adjust the valves on this same 1972 HONDA XL250?
Very well explained. On my 1978 xl125 i have to rotate the plate like 1/6 of turn till points contacts. It means that they are worn out? And if i placed them there, engine is hard to start or will just to backfires. I check if the cam timing was off and it is not.
Make sure the advance is working correctly. Make sure you maintain the points gap when you rotate the plate, sometimes when you turn it , the points gap changes because the plate fits loosely in the head making it do what you describe.
Great how to sir! Love the video. I'm trying to time a SL125 and am having issues getting her started. I followed your steps and have brand new points. Any advice as to how to get it to start after doing all this? Compression is 80PSI and I have bright blue spark. I just cannot get the engine to fire.
80 psi is a little low. you might have a valve or piston ring issue. Also carburetor needs to be right. You might get it to run.
What is your abrasive paper of choice to clean points
Thanks, great video
good vid.
Do I have to use the volt meter or can it be done without it?
I dont have a volt meter can I use a digital multimeter?
Good vid . Music unesassary
My problem is I can't find a new set of points for my 1982 kz305, they are not made anymore ! I have a mint condition bike, with no way to get it running decent !
Great video thanks
Glad you enjoyed it
Sweet!
Nice
Having a little trouble getting spark on my 1979 Honda Twinstar 185. Is a battery required to produce spark. The bike doesn't have 1 at the moment and I've been trying to produce fire using the kickstart.
yes It needs a battery to start.
Hope someone can answer this whats the electric wire connected to the point breaker? I’m new to this
The ignition coil and the condenser.
I did same procedure before see your video...firstly I thought it sparks when points close together...but that seems strange to me because after rotating flywheel..I saw that the points where getting close and starting open at F point till T point before starting closing again...
So I am making this question to be sure...because if you do it wrong the XT400-500 will let you live with an ankle less...
When the points starting open is when it sparks
When the points open is when it sparks
Yeah im ok..when im at F mark straight on the line the beep sound of volt meter stops..meaning they start open...I think I made a good work on timing
The bike was working before with wrong timing (3 out of 5) kicks were kickbacks
So I think now will be a lot better
im starting from scratch and there is no reference point "when the points open" Are you trefering to TDC compression stroke?
When the points open is when it will spark. Reference point (timing mark "F")
should be on the fly wheel.
I have put new cylinder on my cb 100 and now the points are open and closes jyst at tdc .should it not be other way around?the markings are correct
Your cam might be 180 degrees off. You can fix that with out tearing everything apart by removing and rotating the small cam on the timing advance unit 180 degrees.
@@Amotorcyclenut no its not .dont know wtf has happend..
Rotate the crank 360 degrees and you will be at the correct spot. Remember the cam rotates once for every two rotations of the crank.
I got a dt 250 yamaha and I need a dial indicator could I do without?
Simon De Asian Maybe, it depends on how creative you can be. The timing for a DT 250 is 3.2mm before top dead center. I have done it with a set of calipers through the spark plug hole. Not as accurate as a dial indicator but it can be done.
Once you find the fire position make a fire mark on the flywheel and the case. Use tape and a pen to put your marks on first so if you mess up you can move them. Now you can check your timing with multimeter or a timing light. Once your happy with how it runs, scribe a mark on your fly wheel and case so they line up at the firing point. Next time you want to set your points it will be easy.
I have a 1978 XL350 that I can't quite figure out. I connected a test light (positive to wire coming from points, negative to ground) and it would not light up at any point in the rotation. However, I can get the plug to spark when kicking the bike over. Any advice?
A Honda XL350 uses a magneto type ignition that does not require a battery voltage to operate. Disconnect the connector from the points to the coil and use a multimeter set on the lowest ohms setting. Hook the red lead to the points wire and ground the black lead. Then you will be able to see when the points open and close.
A Motorcycle Nut Thanks for the reply. I’m realizing I had a typo in my comment. I meant to say the test light would not light up at any point during the crank rotation. I can’t figure out why this would be.
@@JWReynolds96 There is no battery voltage in that type of ignition system. So you have to supply voltage to run the test light if you want to use a test light. Make sure you disconnect the points from the ignition coil FIRST!, or you'll be looking for a new coil.
A Motorcycle Nut thank you! I’m used to working on a cb350, so I’m still figuring this system out. I’ll give the multimeter a shot.
Hey buddy ! Any way you can help me with my 76 xl 175 please !!!!

Hi will this work for a 74 honda xl350? Same dwell gap ECT. ? Thanks
Yes it will. Uses the same point gap.
@@Amotorcyclenut thanks for your info , my 75 xl 350 is out of time , i tried checking it but I'm not too clear how, will a digital multimeter work if so what mode ? If not I'll get a different meter , also is there supposed to be oil in the side case where the flywheel is ? Thanks very much ! Corbin
yes there is oil on the left side oil case. Digital meters seem to respond slow. If you meter has a continuity check with audio beep that will work well.
How long do the points stay open after the F mark???
About 270 degrees rotation of the cam
You state to rotate the flywheel until the TDC mark is lined up, and "that will be the position in which you want to set the gap of the points." This is a misstatement. At TDC the points will be just barely open. The gap needs to be measured when at its maximum which is well past TDC. I think you meant to say "rotate the engine until the points rubbing block is on the highest point of the advance cam." There is actually a small notch on the cam at that spot. Also, if the timing cannot be set without turning the points plate well beyond normal range it does NOT mean the points are worn out, it means the points gap is way off or else the advance is not returning to idle position, or the cam chain is way worn out.
what I said was rotate the fly wheel until TDC marked is line up and the points are open. That is the correct spot to set the gap of the points. That will be the high spot on the timing cam. The cam rotates one rev for every two revolutions of the crank., because its a four stroke engine. If you rotate the crank one rev from that position that will be the approximate location where the points fire the ignition coil. If your points will not adjusted open enough to to get the proper gap on the high spot of the cam they are worn out and you will not get a decent dependable spark.
Is this the same process for a 77' SL 125?
They didn't make and SL125 in 1977, they did make a XL125 and if that's what you mean, yes the process is the same.
A Motorcycle Nut I found a lot more intriguing info. Its not a 125 its a 185......XL 'cause engine code... OBVIOUSLY I'm on a very very wide learning curve.
That's Ok everybody got to start somewhere.
How do you know that you're on the compression stroke ?
Take the spark plug out of the engine. Put you thumb over the hole and turn the engine. You'll know when it's on compression stroke
See the valve
I wish I had noticed it was tilted away from you 😁
No spark at .014 . I don't like an onrush of current to try and make a spark. 94 dollars for Honda original coil. 13 dollar coil no spark . High voltage needs a ground. Back to the original coil with open secondary. I will check the magnet.
Yep runs with the old original coil at .014- it has to run 2x at 232 miles freeway can reg?
Where the hell are the points on my 79 XL250s ?
No points on this model, it has electronic ignition.
