HOLY SHIT that's fiddle legend Bobby Hicks on the BANJO!
I didn’t know he did the banjo on the song, either. Check out Bobby playing banjo with Bill Monroe

Playing a Stelling!
Stage full of talent !
The fabulous George Grantham of Poco fame on drums!
Bruce Bouton on pedal steel.
One of the best, and most recognizable steel runs ever on "Highway 40 Blues" !!
Bruce Boughton!
The way Ray Flacke plays the solo is what made me get into playing country guitar, and buy a Telecaster. You can play hybrid country style guitar on other model guitars, but it's honestly always missing something.
I was in a band ( bass player) that opened for Ricky Skaggs in a theatre in Lowell, Mass. I managed to meet Ray Flacke afterwards in nearby bar. What a wonderful guy he was.
@@bluarcher5941 that's awesome! Hes definitely one of the greats ..
@@bluarcher5941 I am jelous!
Damn, what a bunch of killer pickers !!!!
Probably the best country band Ricky ever had. The suit is on loan from Mr.Roark from Fantasy Island.
Good one. Ricky never was a hippie.
I love this minor variation on the mandolin break he did on the album, then Bluegrass Boy Bobby Hicks does that crazy chromatic banjo break, the Great Ray Flacke's guitar break, then Bruce Boughton pedal steel (one of the must-know pedal steel songs).
Ricky Skaggs is a Master piece Legend!!
I was at the CMA awards setting on the inside...( we owned a recording studio in Illinois my father and I belong to the CMA for seven or eight years and went to the CMA awards every year till I ended up going on the road myself after being on a show called you can be a star ) The show opened up with Ricky Skaggs walking down the aisle towards the stage I believe they were playing heart broke......!!! The night before the country music awards I was at the Jack Daniels bar and got to sit with Charlie Daniels some of his band members and Ray Flack Ray signed my black telecaster pick guard with a white grease pin ....🎵❤️❤️❤️🎶🙏❤️🎶
Is Charlie Daniels any kin to Jack ?
Ricky's voice at the beginning of this has a clear, crystal quality that reminds me a bit of what Chris Thile's doing now. Easier to see the influence here than other places. What a pair!
He grew up with my cousin Keith Whitley.
Chris Hamilton Chris, I think that Keith Whitley was one of the finest singers ever. I still remember the day he passed, what a sad day that was. He had so much more left in him to give.
+1 to the comment about Keith Whitley. What an amazing talent and what a tragic loss.
He also grew up with my uncle
I loved Keith Whitley!
A SOULFUL MASTERPIECE ! THANK YOU MR SKAGGS! AND ALL THE BOYS!
George Grantham was the drummer for Poco back in the early 1970s....back when Jim Messina was in the band.
This is really Great!!! Awesome band!! I really love this song!! I was a little kid when it was on the radio, I liked it then too.
the pack of dorals in the banjo player's shirt pocket is a nice touch.
What a band!
I wonder if Ray Flacke drove Ricky nuts never playing a thing like the record? :)
Didn’t matter. It was all good.
Ray put his own twist on things and I think he and Ricky were often at odds...but Ray was so damn good...well u know where this is going...
@@bluarcher5941 Well, they did call him Prickey Rickey, probably for good reason.
Ricky's mandolin break ain't note for note like it is on the record either !
Amazing to see Chuck Norris on guitar!
wonderful music wish i could play. id play n sing for yall. me n my brother used tobut we dont cuz he works alot miss it. love this song tho
A SOULFUL MASTERPIECE ! THANK YOU MR SKAGGS!
thank you for posting this !!! Ricky is the best
love this song.....!
Two stepped to this at the Western Palms in Corpus Christi in 1983
Listen - at the beginning you hear Flacke play the harmony line to the intro. Bruce's steel was not up in the mix yet.
Bruce Bouton, part of the Allen Reynolds pickers for many years, and the only studio musician who also toured with Garth for many many years.
I’m glad the comments are on. Incredibleness!
I wonder if Ricky ever got silly and said “stick out my tongue,” instead of “stick out my thumb.” 😜
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
F'in Awesome.
Yep. The man.
Ray!
not only the dorals , but the pot of sanka in the back room.......that steel guitar makes a huge difference in this song. try listening to the versions with no steel....not as good.
@TheSamuel1979 Are you Iranian? Glad you liked it. I love it too :)
Ricky Skaggs high way blues song music video.
I remember when I had hair like that lol.
hey donny...that's George Grantham..Mickey is on the piano.
what year is this?
82 or 3 would be my guess
83 I think. Ray Flacke wore that same jacket at their US Festival gig that year.
Nice video performance - all great players, esp. Ray Flacke/Bruce Bouton...but...Bobby Hicks on 5-STRING BANJO. Not seen that much. Bobby, of course, legendary fiddler with Monroe, Skaggs and others but also picked banjo w/ Monroe for a time.
Mustache
The Jimi Hendrix of bluegrass.
i don't rekon!
Ricky never was a hippie; most other contemporary musicians were. It's the reason Earl left Lester. It al depends on who you hang out with. He had a chance, but he went in a right wing direction, hence the leisure suit/styled hair look. Music can transcend religion/politics; Ricky is still a great musician no matter what.
What ever
Always has different musicians every time he takes the stage. Singing way to soft.
Singing fine....bad mix
