That second Ray Flacke solo at this live show is really out in the stratosphere. He keeps it pure country but sends it out into surreal territory. Not an easy task. One of the greatest country guitarists there ever was.
There are so many things about these fantastic Ray solos. Just mentioning one, in the first solo, does anyone else wonder how in its very beginning, he forms a chord, then does a descending run during most of which his fingers don’t seem to be moving??? I see they do at the end of it, but the run is practically over by that time! Guitar work brilliant throughout!
I love this song. In my estimation the Englishman guitarist (Ray Flacke) played the most aggressive solo ever played by a country band. I can't get enough!!!!!
Lots of good pickers in that band. My fiddlin buddy calls Ricky's 5 -string electric mandolin the "Hamstercaster". Too bad today's country radio doesn't play good music.
They sure as hell don't. They play the absolute drivel that they call "country music" nowadays(Minus Sturgill Simpson, and maybe 2 or 3 others who play actual country music and not the crap pop music they call "Country" these days(and the last 25 years or so tbh. It's ALL the ABSOLUTE DRIZZLING FUCKING SHITS.(To borrow a great saying/term from the wrestling business.) which is simply AWFUL pop music w/ an acoustic guitar and maybe a little bit of fiddle, or the mandolin. It's all SO depressingly bad, homogenized, oversaturated, over produced, cookie cutter, mass produced assembly line DRIVEL. Long live TRUE COUNTRY MUSIC. Jimmy Rogers, Hank, Waylon, Guy, Townes, George, Buddy, Bob Wills, Buck, to name ONLY A FEW absolute LEGENDS that're rolling over in their graves.
@@stephenjones1488 As a country station jock I'll tell ya...the artists you mentioned are classified as "Classic Country", what I play is "Todays Country", or "Progressive Country". Along with sprinklings of Classic. It is whats popular with our target demographic.
This Man Is A True Gentleman , I Was Working As A Security Guard About 1988 At A Holiday Inn in KCMO , Mr Skaggs Was Staying There. He Got up Early one Morning And Ask If I Had Seen A Car come For Him , And Since I Had Not We Talked About His Music And MY Family , Before His Ride Came, And When it Did We Shook Hands And He Was Off. What A Gentleman , What A Star.
Holy crap, this is great! Hadn't heard this song in forever then it popped in my head as I was thinking about the term 'raisin' and searched for it. Found this version -- what a treasure.
Incredible, isn’t it? I have the good fortune to play with an authentic country guitar player. Sometimes I’ll nearly mess up from listening to him. It’s a superior approach to playing the guitar, in my humble bass-playing opinion.
In the early 80’s Ricky’s music was country, bluegrass and rockabilly. He was great doing this sound. He set the bar for Dwight, Marty and others to follow.
Dang! I am from BOSTON and the 1st time I saw this on TV, I was HOOKED. Every one was "in the Zone". I could listen and/or watch this 10 times a day. Ray Flacke RULES.
@@MDavidG1 Thanks for the correction. In either decade, Mr Flacke delivers the country goods. Picker extraordinaire! Takes it to another level while keeping it country.....hard to do.
My mom had this album in 1982 when I was 8 years old! She played it all the time! Vinyl all the way! Also I love the Flatt and Scruggs version!!! Cuz I'm a country baby!!!!!😁💞
This band with Ray Flacke was incredible. Ricky's music seem to lose it's bite after Ray left. In my opinion, he's never approached the quality of those first 2 lps on Epic Records(Waitin' For The Sun To Shine & Highways and Heartaches).
What about 1985's "Country Boy"? (from the 1984 album of the same name) czcams.com/video/l_QheuTi8Q8/video.html He also did "Uncle Pen" (originally by Bill Monroe and His Blue Grass Boys) the year before (from 1983's Don't Cheat In Our Hometown)... czcams.com/video/CpH8Wu9DbjM/video.html
It's actually a 5 string solid body electric mandolin with a pull string device. When he pushes the neck down it pulls one of those strings up in pitch, like a pedal steel guitar. Lotta twang.
I’ve watched this video over and over. And over. Ray and Ricky’s blazing creative off the cuff leads leaves me in total awe! Talk about God given talent! I mean who plays like that😮 Unbelievable !
@Rickyskaggsofficial I am from Texas. You know my son Casey James. He took me backstage to meet you when you were in Dallas around 6-7 years ago. He first met you back stage at the Opry. (You were both playing that evening.) We both have been and will be life long fans. God bless you Ricky!
Such a catchy Country Rock choon!! One listen & it's stuck in your head for a long time & this live version is even better than the normal single!! Great musicians.....great song!! 🤪
Is this 5:52 version available anywhere for purchase anywhere? The version from the album "Waiting' For The Sun To Shone" is just 3:10, so most of the solos don't appear. Only long version is off a live album from London (7:10) & FAR more uptempo.
So what happened to Ray Flacke? The last time I saw him, he did a duo with Skaggs on the Grammys. He was crazy drunk and couldn't play and that was it. I heard nothing after. Does anyone know what he's doing now?
Jeff McMurray it’s a custom built mandocaster lol. Made to look like a miniature telecaster but tuned like a mandolin and also has a string bender in it like a pedal steel would have but activated by the strap button. It was made by Joe Glaser in Nashville.
Ray Flacke is like Picasso, completely unpredictable and fearlessly original. A joy to experience!
Amen brother. He’s a Tele Superman no doubt!
And so is Ricky!
That’s when country music was country music ♥️♥️
That second Ray Flacke solo at this live show is really out in the stratosphere. He keeps it pure country but sends it out into surreal territory. Not an easy task. One of the greatest country guitarists there ever was.
You're so right. The combination of technical mastery and creativity in that 2nd solo is absolutely mind blowing. Incredible.
No doubt, both solos give me goosebumps every single time I watch this video.
There are so many things about these fantastic Ray solos. Truly a master at his instrument. Wow. Just wow.
Help, sounds like some bald guy is raping a chicken with his guitar through some kind of digital Time Machine. Best sound ever
That steel guitar player looks at Ray Flacke just as approvingly as I do. Was fortunate to see him live with Skaggs in 1980 and I’ve been a fan since.
I knew Ray in London when he played with Meal ticket, fabulous player, and yeah, that second solo is off the charts.
Oh, to have been at this show! Legendary, especially the incomparable Ray Flacke.
I love this song. In my estimation the Englishman guitarist (Ray Flacke) played the most aggressive solo ever played by a country band. I can't get enough!!!!!
I can't get enough of this!. Ray Flacke is playing the hell outta that guitar. Get it son!

Real country music.

Ricky and Ray bending those guitar strings awesome
My dad blasted this one in our living room when I was 4. I'm blasting it today for my young son. He loves it.
Tiny Moore played electric mandolin and fiddle for Hag and the Strangers! I have always loved Ricky Skaggs! Real Country boys and girls! 💙
Mine too. Parents used to hold me up and dance to it. So good
Outstanding ! I did with my kids too, now my grandkids listen.
I'm 62 andcant get enuf
Who-eee!!,...ain’t no slouches allowed!!! Y’all better have six fingers on each hand to be in Ricky’s band!!

I am from another country, but I love country music. I've always loved Ricky's music. He is talented. He plays gospel too.
Hello Carmen,how are you doing?🌹🌹
In the early 80’s Ricky’s music was country, bluegrass and rockabilly. He was great doing this sound. He set the bar for Dwight, Marty and others to follow.
You said it! Both he and Marty Stuart got their start in the biz as children. Both of them learned mandolin as their first instrument.

Austin City Limits was all about music in those days
Ray Flacke is jaw dropping
Ray Flacke plays the ever loving shit out of that guitar and Ricky always had as a great band!
No kiddin'. Ray does the best electric guitar lead solo in country history here on his second solo in this live piece from the '70s. It's truly epic.

Does that little mandocaster have a b bender?😳 ray Is one of the greats

I recorded this on my VCR back in the early ‘80’s and it’s my favorite guitar pickin song of Mr. Skaggs. 🙏🏼👍🏻👍🏻
This one's pretty good, but I like Country Boy better for pickin' :)
That’s some great pickin also. I just like what he does on that little electric guitar.
It's actually a 5 string solid body electric mandolin with a pull string device. When he pushes the neck down it pulls one of those strings up in pitch, like a pedal steel guitar. Lotta twang.
guitbanger1 Thanks! I don’t know much about types of mandolins or guitars, I thought it was a baby Fender. I just like the sound and his playing it.
Ricky's a hot rod fo sho!!
Ricky pickin the shit outta that lil guitar.!
The Mandocaster!

Ray Flacke!
I remember hearing this in the 80s and thinking he sang "Thunderations" instead of "Don't get above your raisin'."
Another fella said he thought he heard don’t eat a fuzzy raisin, which is solid advice..
