  • SHUTTER ISLAND (2010) is an absolutely beautiful psychological thriller directed by the legendary Martin Scorsese and stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Mark Ruffalo, and Sir Ben Kingsley. The film has a truly mind-boggling plot that leads to a huge plot twist that I never saw coming. Lead by a truly great performance from Leonardo DiCaprio, SHUTTER ISLAND is full of creepy and beautiful imagery and is one of my favorite films of all time.

I think the twist is real...
But there's a DOUBLE twist... I believe Teddy/Andrew is healthy by the end of the movie but he decides to forget and FAKES still being in his fantasy so he can simply just erase his past and finally "die"

Something with Sir Ben Kingsley likes playing people running asylums. He did it in Stonehearst Asylum so must be a running theme with this guy. I could totally make out he was some sort of lunatic just by looking at him and everything that he was seeing. Knowing they were successful would show them that they can do it again with other patients. Leo would almost certainly play dumb and they would have to sort out how to handle him. I always thought the same thing. They devoted so much time and resources into their experimental treatment. Any sign of a breakthrough wouldn’t just be ignored imo. Even if Teddy was pretending the results didn’t stick like the last few breakthroughs they thought they made. His case would’ve been a groundbreaking discovery in treating mental illness. Teddy ruined it for all the future ppl who could’ve been cured using this method instead of having to be lobotomized 🤷🏾‍♂️

    • @brandon.lewis.
      @brandon.lewis. Před 2 lety +2

@@tjanderson5892 1000% agree. This is a good example of having to say "it's just a movie". It's nonsensical to think the guy (I'm forgetting his name) wouldn't immediately tell the other doctors that Teddy was faking it. The ending we are given implies they'll probably abandon this technique and call it failure..even though the guy is well aware Teddy was faking it..Huh?
The more you think about it, the less sense it makes. For dramatic movie purposes, though, they went the route of let's throw in a last minute 'twist' then cut to the credits before the audience starts going🤔🤔 It's the easy, lazy way out but weirdly it's also THE moment the audience will remember most.

I first saw Shutter Island as a teenager and even though I didn’t fully understand it, it really resonated with me emotionally. Everything to the visuals, musical score, and emotional story really hooked me as I hadn’t experienced anything quite like it before and it became an instant favorite of mine :) I still listen to the soundtrack often to this day!

Im a little late but i DON'T think he's insane.
    1. The doctor said there're 66 patients. But if Teddy was Andrew and Rachel didn't exist. Then there had to be 65 patients. Then who's the numer 67 ?
    2. The doctor asked Teddy :"why you're wet, baby?" That's the same thing Teddy asked his wife when he dreamed of her. Which mean they know all about Teddy's vision. Teddy also dreamed of her being burnt. Why did the doctor know about the vision of her being wet but not the vision she got burnt? Maybe because "burnt wife" is Teddy actual dream and "wet wife" is just the doctor's doing some mind control shit on Teddy head.
    3. What about all of the other details? The patient number 67 note, the part where Teddy emphasied his wife dead because of gas poision not the fire,... Don't tell me all of that are just added in the movie just for fun. It must have meaned something.
    4. He has 3 kids but why only the daughter got more attention. And didn't that girl kinda look like the little girl in the war. . That's the only kid's face Teddy kept thinking about. So the doctor took the image of that girl turn into his daughter.
    5. The famous scene where the woman patient drinking water. Aside from the fact that the water disapeared. She also told Teddy she's got in here because she killed her husband with an axe. But because he violently abused her. And for me he totally deserved to die like that. So therefore we can say that she's not insane. A sane person told you to "RUN"? Maybe she knew Teddy is a victim.
I don't know guys. Either way, I watched this movie again after 2 years and It still fuck my brain up.

1.the 67 patient was referring to Andrew not the real Andrew but the one in the fantasy and Racheal was just playing a role in the fantasy
2.the reason the doctor knows is BC they attempted these same experiment's before hand and he also said "why your wet baby" when it really happened and the burnt wife dreams proves that he's becoming sane
      3. "The law of 4" is just explaining the anagram of his name (Andrew) and his wife, in the dream He says it's smoke BC he has a fear of fire and water, as in the movie fire and water has a big role in this movie
      4. The girl in the war is her daughter but in reality it's not, well it's his only daughter so I guess it she would have more attention I could be wrong
5.she is insane,,, She said run BC she was playing a role in the fantasy that Andrew was making up (Andrew being teddy) and the reason the water disappeared was BC we was seeing thought Andrews perspective which he he's scared or brings back memories of reality and at the end of the movie he is sane the famous line "Would you rather live as a monster or die as a hero?", When psychotic he is not living his true life, he is figuratively dead. Therefore 'to live as a monster' means, when he is mentally well (alive and aware), he understands what he has done.
Sorry for the late reply hope it clears things up for u :)

@@HorrorMine well you might be waiting a while ... but for starters the movie starts out with the main character having a scar on his eye , basically everything that Rachel said was true . They weren’t looking for her because they thought she was dead like she told you . She also made it clear that every other person on the island was there as part of the experiment being done and it’s obvious because the director made a point of having her wake him up ! The Doctor also knew the exact hallucinations that the main character was experiencing , which is just part of capability of the technology being displayed in the movie . The movie was cleverly designed to trick the viewer into thinking the main character was crazy

@@abstractproductionz5734 Patrica Clarkston character in the cave is real and what she says is all true. She never says her name is Rachel, Teddy does and she doesn't correct him. She only calls him Marshall, she doesn't talk to him like a patient. No way they would keep supplying him cigarettes if he burnt his wife. Kingsley has a explaination for everything except her, he jumps when Teddy mentioned her but their is no matching avatar for her she real. They wanted to know what Teddy knows that's why they did all of this he knows too much. That why the want to lobotomize him.

Those who still think that Teddy Daniels isn't insane, i'm with you guys.😂
Those who thought Teddy is insane, their biggest proof here is that Chuck couldn't handle his gun properly, proving that he isn't a cop and that Teddy is a patient of the island. But when Teddy had a conversation with Noyce, George tells him "i will never get out of here, i got out once but not twice or trice. The fact that Teddy told Chuck before that he had talked to George when he was transfered to Dedham. Proves that Teddy really is a Marshall and that he really is looking for a certain Laeddis and found Noyce and talked to him about this asylum where they are now. But because George's moves are being watched, they brought him back, that makes it Teddy's fault, all of his interrogations including lies in forms of bargaining with him, George feeds him with all the details but because George is being watched, they brought him back beat him and locked him up for good anf that's why he blame Teddy for his condition. So now this men's(Nazis) eyes are on Marshal Teddy who apparently will go to the island just to investigate about a disappearance of a certain Rachel. But at the same time looking for a Certain Laeddis but actually its all a bait to make him go in the island to make him insane. Proof that Teddy isn't insane is when he met with Rachel on the cave, that was a real conversation, she explained about how they are making people insane, and mind controlling procedures and providing the fact that everyone in the island knows it. And its 50's so its safe to say that Nazi still operates to inflict terrors without being noticed by the Government. Also that isnt just a dream or hallucination because from the beggining, all of Teddy's dream ends up being awaken in different scenario but not in this. He's still in the cave with Rachel. A good doctor who uncovered a conspiracy inside the institution and escaped to avoid being turned into a psycho. Think about all warnings she said before Teddy left the cave. All this plots to make the Government think that Teddy is insane. Because if they killed him, further investigation would be conducted and they dont want that. See how anger runs with the warden when he is speaking with Teddy in the vehicle? Like a soldier who is angry with his enemy but couldn't kill him because all their plan will be busted. The woman who wrote "RUN", they're controlling her but something inside her mind still fights for reality and warns Teddy about whats happening. The same thing when George told him "then they've already won" explains that if Teddy thinks he has a partner then their plan to make him insane is working.
I am Nurse, we do not pretend to live in fantasy over reality for the sake of rehabilitation. We always present reality to mentally challenged individual regardless of who they are or how smart they are. If this kind of asylum exists then it is not an asylum, it is an experimentation to create chaos. Therefore Teddy is not insane, but by the time he took the pills the gave him, thats when things got crazy. And oh, about the doctor looking disappointed in the end?he got disappointed to the fact that no matter what they do, they failed to break his spirit.
Those who lives like a monster(them) doing this kinds of evil or die as a good man(him) who fought for what he believes is true.

It is a horrible treatment that was used in the past to solve some psychological illness such as depression and many other. Basically they insert something like icepick from your nose, through your eyesocket, and enter part of your brain. Then they'll 'destroy' some part of your brain. Most of people who take this treatment will lose their personality (might be like an empty shell), even could lose their ability to speak and walk.
      Horrible.
