- SILENT HILL (2006) is the movie adaptation of the 1999 survival horror video game, SILENT HILL. The film follows the story of Rose DaSilva who is trying to find her missing daughter inside of the town of Silent Hill. It is an absolutely beautiful and terrifying film that does an amazing job in faithfully bringing the material from the video game into film. SILENT HILL is highly underrated and I regard it as one of the best video game to film adaptations ever made.

You can really tell that the filmmakers didn't see the adaptation as a cash grab using the game's popularity. They put a lot of effort into crafting the atmosphere and including intricate details that resemble the movie without going for cheap fanservice.
Christoph Gans, the director, actually played the games. Hence he took on the project. Ofc there would be small changes as it's a standalone movie but still pays rooted respect to it's origins.
Yeah in this modern era where they just make films for the sake of profit but now we realize that Silent Hill 2006 is actually made of love and passion. I didn't like it when it first released and I vaguely remember the little girl was bullied in her school for appearing in the movie. and you can tell they made the movie with passion and love. It's not perfect I know.
Wait until you hear what it took to even get the right to make the movie. The director was an absolute unit for making the movie.
@@ollicron7397 Yeah Japanese are known to be very hard to work with. Both in terms of language barrier and their mentality. It's the early 2000s Konami afterall.
I seem to recall it suggested that they took partial inspiration from the famous abandoned city that's still burning. Old rumor I guess. I've been wanting to watch this movie again.
This guy missed the biggest reveal in the move. Rose tells Sharon not to look at the carnage and horror or gaze at Alyssa. But she doesn’t listen, and when she looks at Alyssa her eyes turn black. This is when Alyssa and Sharon are re-joined together into one person. It’s the Alyssa/Sharon combo that keeps Rose in the altered dimension. After all, she’s the mom. The conjoined child’s last act is to imprison her mom in a dimension of solitude and lonliness, where for all we know she may never age.
Never thought of it that way, thanks for clarifying.
The person Sharon looks at when her mother tells her to keep her eyes closed was Lucifer. Both Sharon and her mother and the cop died in a ghost town which is silent hill. Their souls just currently reside there. Which explains the ending
@@evasivedre370 nah you are so wrong because sharon and rose never died
@@JaheimPhipps they are half dead from the car crash into silent hill which left them in limbo. This is clearly explained when rose told the cop she was bleeding. The cop replied “yea I cracked my head pretty hard crashing the motorcycle”
@@evasivedre370 there's no such thing as half dead. You're either alive or dead.
Considering it came out in 2006 where movie technology wasn’t nearly as good as it is today, I think they did a decent job. I wish the themes would’ve been a bit more on par with the Silent Hill games where it’s about a character confronting their trauma and past. I guess we do get to see the trauma of Alyssa, but it always is cool when someone is “tortured in their own private Silent Hill” like we see in the games.
I completely agree with you. I feel like that’s a huge part of the movie where they missed an opportunity. If Rose had more personal demons to face that manifested within the town, then the film would have been a lot better!
@@HorrorMine I don’t know if you have plans to do the Silent Hill 2 movie (which is far inferior in my opinion because they just tried to make it 3D and flashy), but that movie also doesn’t really expand into any deeper themes. They really keep trying to lay into the Cheryl/Alyssa story arc, but that’s not even the best arc. Heck, even Frozen Memories which is a direct offshoot of the Cheryl/Alyssa arc has a SUPER creative way of telling the story and then that huge twist at the end.
Just so many missed opportunities!
I haven’t even bothered to watch the 2nd movie because I know I’d hate it! I may check it out sometime soon tho.
@@HorrorMine The second movie actually has a pop-tart jumpscare so yea whoever made this movie didn't care at all czcams.com/video/_Xi7v9Nj4wE/video.html
Well in terms of game story I agree with you but keep in mind the movie was based off the first game, where the monsters are Alessa's manifestations. In terms of the first, they were pretty accurate
If only resident evil had the same love and care poured into the live action adaptations. They are iconic hot messes
And too many hot messes I stopped after 4
reaident evil movie 1 did good ,maybe 2 as well
I remember resident evil used to be super popular back then. I had many people tell me about it. I should give it all a rewatch.
@@lbasura I definitely love the first 3 movies even tho they have some questionable qualities. Damn this got a lot of likes! ❤️
To this day, the transition between worlds, with that siren, the slow darkening, things flaking off and corrupting... creeps the hell out of me in the best possible way. Survival Horror games, especially the old school ones, are among the best. You really get attached to the character and their plight and invest yourself in them. They can really get under your skin. Silent Hill was phenomenally good at doing that. And what unique monsters... Pyramid Head is iconic. All of them are.
Yeah they definitely in limbo and the area is some sort of dimension
This is the most faithful adaptation of video game for a feature film. The film captured many essence of the video game - monsters, music, atmosphere, set, and characters too. Rose is the female version of Harry.
An underrated gem to say the least.
I completely agree!
another way of saying this is 'its a really shitty movie'
@@jerkchickenblog Imagine being able to read....
I would just like to note that I first watched this movie when I was 9 years old at 6 in the morning in complete darkness and silence in the living room downstairs by myself.
Had a similar experience and all I’ll say is this…You poor soul.
Perfect timing! I wish I was u that day, I was in my late twenties then and jaded. I wish I could be scared by a movie like when I was a kid.
Legend
And I thought I was a badass for watching Blair Witch Project in the house by myself at 2am in the pitch black at 12 years old.
Oh no 😭😂
That first sequence when the siren goes off is so good and creepy.
a movie that truly aged well.
true.
"She managed to stop shannon from a permanent solution to a temporary problem" 😭😂
my interpretation is that when both women enter into silent hill they both die. i dont think you can enter the shadow/fog world without dieing. since the demon inhabiting Alessa keeps the whole area locked down thats why theres no way out. the only way to appease Alessa would be to force all of the trapped in silent hill to apologize and give themselves up to Alessa.
This theory might not be true if its cannon with silent hill 2 movies
How would she leave the voicemail to the father which we know he heard if she was dead?
Ghost logic @@gehillz4075
@@gehillz4075 that's why the voicemail wasn't clear, sounding like it came from the other world, the world of the dead
I've always liked it but I'll give it another go just to reassure what I already know
Awesome! I’ve found that the movie aged really well and I appreciated more seeing it after all these years.
I would like to agree that Silent hill is one of the greatest videogame adaptations to come out
I'll accept all three of those. call the other two guilty pleasure if you must
Oh shit. i forgot that there's a street fighter adaptation, but then again i only said that it's "ONE" of the best meaning there's a list i can go through, like the mortal kombat adaptation you mention
Hearing all the extra details in production really makes me find a new appreciation for this film. Love this!
My favorite horror movie ever. I saw the BTS of this movie and it was INSANE. They literally built most of the backgrounds and the monsters aren’t CGI, even armless guy, he had a special suit with a pipe to breath through inside. You will hardly see this level of attention to detail on today’s movies
It's interesting, I felt more positive about this movie when I was watching it for the first time. Might be because it introduced me to the franchise. After several years and playing all the games I do see why some fans of the games didn't like it because - to be fair - they changed a lot of the plot from the original game. That being said... they also in fact DID stay pretty faithful to most of what makes these games so great. It's an emotional, disturbing and hauntingly beautiful roller coaster. I do see quite a few flaws with this film every time I watch it but I still enjoy it. I still think they nailed the atmosphere, the tone, the look of the fog- and otherworld as well as the look of the town itself. They also made this story somehow more emotional and psychological by taking a step back of all the religious stuff and focus more on the result of Alessa being bullied, hurt and raped. As I said earlier - I do understand some of the criticism but I don't agree with all of it. It's not a perfect film but the creators did care about Silent Hill and to present it in the right way. And I really appreciate that. Also... as a fan of the franchise... watching this movie always feels a little bit like coming home. And it will always have a special place in my heart.
Beautifully said. I couldn’t have said it any better myself and I completely agree with you!
I totally agree with you on this. For me, while they were not able to adapt everything, they were able to capture the essence, feel, and tone of the video game.
We all know that most of video game to movie adaptations has a reputation of not following the source material, but Silent Hill movie tried its best to accommodate all of these.
It is very difficult to adapt a source material from one medium to another, especially if the original is an interactive one (video game).
Therefore, it is hard to compress a 10-hour video game to 1.5 hour movie. Therefore, compromises will be made to accommodate these. Compressing additional plot of the cult, drugs, revival of a demon god will be too overwhelming for general audience.
I feel that both the officer and her mother both died on the road that night and where transported to the hellscape that Alissa created. Considering that all the town folks are dead as well and only safe due to their rigid hold on their zealous faith.
Once their leader committed the sin of murder inside their most holy place thatvfaith was momentarily broken and doubt let the darkness invade their sanctuary and kill them properly in the most grisly ways imaginable.
When Sharon and her mother left silent hill the darkness had already joined with her and created a new landscape for her but can't return her to the living world. Least that's how I interpreted the ending
I haven't played the games so have no idea if I'm even close to the mark but that's how I perceived it.
I love the fact that the people making it were actually fans of the game.
I loved this movie when I watch it though looking back at it now, Rose was unbelievablely selfish in not talking to her husband about where she was taking their daughter. I'd be furious if my spouse did that!
No thats patriarchal and you would enrage feminachos
No she wasn’t she was trying to help her daughter and that’s not selfish to be trying to help your child navigate what you’re saying but there’s a reason why she didn’t talk to him about it because he didn’t want her to take it she wanted it he wanted to just medicate her daughter which she said it wasn’t helping so he wasn’t listening himself to her side now he should’ve listen to her side to say he’s selfish to because he wasn’t listening to her side of it he just wanted to medicate her so much medication is not the best thing so she tried to your child and that’s not always a good idea to just medicate your child all the time I think it’s so funny awesome you have an idea what they think selfish is selfishness is only if she was doing it for herself but she wasn’t she was doing to take care of her child and she did it for a reason because he wasn’t listening to her because she kind of mentioned before he didn’t want to take her there so he could’ve talk to her about it so just be like no you can’t take her there but you can have your opinion and I have mine
@@tammiepage6489 YES EXACTLY THIS!!!
For Me, an avid Silent Hill game player, the film was always an incredible adaptation as well as being an epic film in its own right. It mashed the first (and best) two games together and managed to create something recognisable and new but also successfully (again imoho) greater than the sum of its parts. There isn't a single wasted moment in the film from start to finish, I watch it often, but I'll never forget watching it in the cinema as everyone filed out I stayed and as the haunting strains of Theme of Laura began I stood alone with an usherette I hadn't seen before, who knew the score and we chatted for a bit about the games and what we took from them, Our own personal Silent Hills. Then as the film ended, the screens closed and the projector stopped rolling I left, never to see that girl again. Maybe She had been a Student working a shift for a friend but somehow that just doesn't fit...so You like Silent Hill now, good, at the risk of mixing movie metaphors,
Welcome to the Party Pal
thanks for this video. as a younger kid. this movie was for sure one of the scariest movies I had ever seen. Never really understood the back story. until now.
I always had a hard time playing through these horror games when i was younger, especially if i was alone. It wasnt that i felt like the games were "scary". They were more so stressful, and would drive my anxiety through the roof. When i watch the movie for the first time. I vaguely remembered the story, but i thoroughly enjoyed the movie. It made me want to go back and play the game again. The sequal movie though...it was far and beyond a complete miss.
I think that once rose got stabbed she really died. That's why the fog followed her home. And the demon created the girl as a vessel
Holy shit, i just realized, Sean Bean doesn't die in this movie! HE MADE IT! HE MA- that's probably why the movie got negative reviews.
Lmao, I just noticed that myself.
lol.
I remember this movie being good but the part where the lady gets burnt to deaf scarred the hell out of me
I grew up near Centralia, PA (town Silent Hill is based off) and I highly recommend not visiting just to see it in person. The underground mine fires are still actively burning and the ground is so unstable you can literally die from the ground suddenly collapsing beneath you.
Well I would die just to visit you in person
@@justacoolguythatcomments5143 What...?
It's not what the game town is based off of its just the movie town just clarifying
@@RoxxyKaosGG He is flirting with you XD

It's a myth that it was based off Centralia. That's a rumor that came from 4chans /v/ and spread from there. The 2006 movie however was indeed partially based from that abandoned town. The game not at all
I love this film. I picked it apart for a media assignment at college and ended up loving it even more. Such an under appreciated film.
I agree!
Actually watched it and remember how sad I was by the ending that the dad can't be with them
This movie is SERIOUSLY underrated.
The sense of impending horror of the dark fall scene took my breath away! The only horror scene before that, that felt the same was way back when Cristy met the Cenobites! So sick! The timing the sound. It was satisfactory and terrifying!
I remember when we had this movie on DVD back when it first came out. I was pretty young (like 8 years old or something lol) but this was top 3 of my favorite movies at that age and it's still just as amazing as I remember
9:16 "Who looks like he unsuccessfully attempted to escape a Jigsaw trap :D" LMAO THAT WAS SO ACCURATE! SAW is my favourite horror movie along with the rest of them (kind of :p)
PREACH!!! THIS FILM IS UNDERRATEDLY AMAZING ESPECIALLY AFTER BEING AN ADAPTATION OF A VIDEO GAME.
This one still gives me cHILLs (get it). And the burnt girl scene still gives me nightmares.
Haha good one! Yes this is definitely a great video game adaptation and so underrated.
I absolutely love this movie. It's a masterpiece
I'm in love that you have it the attention it deserves
I honestly really liked it, theres not really another movie like it. Its got a crazy hell world that has its own ecosystem and rules. It gives you enough to understand whats going on, but not everything is blatantly explained and the world still feels dangerous and mysterious
THOSE ARE PRACTICAL EFFECTS?!? noooOoOoo ma’am!! Also I love the revenge dance under the blood shower. Queen energy
I loved this movie back when it came out! I’m so glad you gave it a second chance ^_^
You kind of forgot that Alyssa merged with Cheryl in the end.
Just remembered about silent hill and wanted to see a explained/recap thank you.
have you still remembered? bump
Nice explanation of the movie. Would have minded a more deep dive through how all the characters came to the city, like the men with gas masks
Im pretty sure they were part of the religious cult that burned Alessa- I could be wrong
They were the member's of that cult that died in the fire. These souls have been here for several years adapting to survive it only having the church as a safe refuge.
Oh man, I loved this movie when it first came out, for all the reasons you described in your video. Did you ever review/explain the sequel?
I watched this movie as a child and since the first time i avoided it. Now i finally rewatched it and it was an amazing movie.
I used to love watching my dad play the game. I was too scared as a kid. I remember being so excited when the movie came out, I really enjoy it. The game and the movie have such good music
Sean Bean too man, fuck the remake of the Hitcher was top notch
I was introduced to Silent Hill through this movie. Not knowing the game and watching the movie at age 12 I loved it. After that I played the games and loved the movie even more for putting me on the games.
For me it was the best horror movie to watch even though i did not play the video game. And still i have so many question: why is Alice's daughter so young? if she got pregnant 30 years ago ( around the time she was being bullied ), her daughter must be around 30. Why Rose easily entered the fog world but his husband could not? Why did Rose come back to house being in fog world? What does it mean? Where did Alice go after having her revenge? Maybe Here "dark part" took her to hell as payment for the revenge?
because Rose and Cybil died in their wrecks. Once Alissa got her revenge Rose was allowed to leave Silent Hill but not death.
I think everybody in the silent hills was dead. But they were trapped inside the church where darkness couldn't reach and get hold of them. Those brethren didn't go to the hell Alissa supposedly created for them. When Rose brought sharon to the silent hill, IG she died in the accident and went to the other side of the world. She was being taken down to hell several times along with cybil but somehow managed to escape those. Sharon was already half a human because her other half was darkness. When Rose tricked the high priestess into making a sin of stabbing someone in their sacred place, Alessa was able to get her revenge. Rose and Sharon both escaped the silent hills more like silent hell but their souls still were trapped in the other dimension. Chris couldn't see anything in silent hills because he was alive and not dead. Dead people would simply disappear in silent hills and go to the other dimension. Alessa was shown as an adult in the end, however sharon was supposed to be her Innocent reincarnation that's why she was a child only.
The biggest twist was Sean bean didn't die in this movie.
It just blows my mind how horror movie creators strayed sooo far from truly good horror films (beside the newest evil dead 😂)
This was made in 2006 and still beats most horror movies that are coming out now! 🤦🏽♂️ I love horror and I am waiting patiently for another masterpiece. I hope they get it right soon.
Oh, this is my favorite film. Every time I watch it, I discover something new.
Great movie and cast, absolutely loved its eerie story. The second one was abit of a strange story plot but not as memorable as this one...also great video 👍👏
Thx! I always thought I'm the only one who loves this movie!
I didn't have a memory card back when the first 2 silent hills came out so it made the game super creepy with the extra incentive to not get killed off and start all over.
Normally, I hate horror movies, however THIS one I will not only willingly watch, but I ENJOY. Is it an ACCURATE adaptation of the original Silent Hill? No. But that's ok, because it IS an AUTHENTIC adaptation of Silent Hill.
Another great video!
Thank you so much!
I freaking LOVE this movie !!! You really are doing my favorite movies
Yo, I been binge watching your channel for a good week and man, I'm glad to see people actually enjoy this film as much as I did.
I rewatched it for the first time not too long ago after not seeing it for over a decade and it was such a nice refreshing horror film as opposed to what we usually get nowadays.
I can understand why fans of the games might not like it as much, however I honestly never played the games. I'm lookin to buy it but that's besides the point. This movie may have not been the most faithful adaptation, underutilized monsters, changed their purpose entirely, and from what I heard. Created the "sexy nurse" trend that continued beyond the movie into the games. Although, I genuinely enjoyed the hell out of this film. Even as a standalone film not connected to any game its such a cool concept. The monsters are terrifying, the atmosphere and locations are amazing, the premise is simple but twisted In a way that makes it interesting, and the acting is well enough to make you feel engaged with the characters that I actually rooted for them.
More so than anything. It's a fun horror film to watch. Which is something you don't get too often. The premises is often simple, then you get character moments, spooky scene, blah, blah, blah. But only having a limited time to learn more information about a dead town before sirens goes off and you're completely on high alert and thinking you're fucked while seeing citizens panick and die by creepy hellspawn looking monsters will always be entertaining to sit through in my book. Especially when you got competent crews behind things such as camera angles, soundtracks, makeup, and set locations. The transition in the school in particular was so immersive in my opinion.
I guess, this is all to say I really liked this film and this channel. Keep up the good work, G!
I always loved this movie . I played SH when it first came out on the PS , used to freak my little brother out . But Rahda Mitchell was amazing !
I seen this movie a long time ago thinking it was just okay....I just ordered it online and am super excited about seeing it again. Now that i think of it, it looks like a great movie.
Exactly like me lol
I never played the games, but I absolutely loved this movie.
play the games!!!
This was (and still is) one of my favorite horror movies ever made
I also revisited this movie just recently and the nurses in the hallway of the hospital still terrifies me!
I just discovered ur channel, i loved it man, new sub
It terrified me as a little kid and it still does till this day....I just watched it again. I'm still scared
Seeing this in theatres is something I’ll never forget. It was the last movie that really scared me.
Silent hill is a masterpiece
I saw this in the theatre and when the grey child first turned up I remember recoiling in my seat. I think it's the first and only time I did that.
The town of Silent Hill is based off of Centralia Pennsylvania, where an underground fire still burns. I can walk to Centralia from where I live in Ashland.
This is one of my favorites i watched it just the other day
I kept saying the movie adaptation is great considering the source material and special effects they had at the time. The casting was great, the sets and makeup were on point.
But yeah people shit on it for the sin of being adapted from a video game
As a casual horror movie goer without prior knowledge of the games, I dig this movie and don't care what critics said.
The original music and sound master in the game was brought in to do the movie. Atmosphere is big in the games and translates well in the movie. One of my favorites
I remember watching it as a kid when it was on Netflix and let me tell it was such a good movie
If you watched this as a kid in Netflix then you are still a kid
I’m gonna be honest, In horror games the footsteps were always some of my favorite parts of them. Lol.
First time around, I loved it. I was 18 and hadn't been scared by a movie in years
watched this in rehab over the summer for the first time; adequately surprised.
I never got a chance to play the game but hopefully one day......
Loved the movie.....!
Radha Mitchell did amazing job as always and Sean bean was a real surprise for me here
i knew i saw her in sonething else and sure enough she was in the damn first riddick movie she was the pilot
At the time when I watched it I was impressed with the visual and audio , with how close it was to the game, I just wish it was more violent and gory
A lot of the creature and sets were practical effects which makes it age fairly well. I own this on blu ray (wish I had a 4k version) and it still looks excellent
Always liked it!
😭😭😭😭 me to my passengers every five seconds “Put your mask on.”
I remember being pissed off by the ending of this movie.
The game was too scary for me I tried to play so many times I use to cry and have my mom turn it off for me and yet I didn’t think the movie was as scary lol
One of the best horror movies of all time!!! I loved it!!! I saw in the theater and it was freaking awesome
People say there are no good videogame movies... but I always thought this was somewhat of an exception. Good cast of veteran actors and the soundtrack was taken from the games which was a nice touch.
this movie really traumatized me when i was younger…
Silent hill is one of the best horror movies.
Game has a fantastic feel as well.
probably the best movie adaptation of a game.
My favorite movie!!! Loved it right away
A nightmare within a nightmare
hi so it’s my first time watching it and why are those two still stuck in the fog world?? can they get out or are they forever trapped there
this was more of a scene by scene explanation of the movie… and less of an explanation as to how it holds up as a great video game adaptation.
That was AWESOME : )
Dude yes!!! They did such a good job
It was just a difficult film and game to keep straight, when contrasting to movies in its genre. It took chances, it did not hold to a three-act-save-the-cat narrative. The antagonists and protagonists, along with a final payoff is murky. But that, as adults, is what we appreciate. It isn't wrapped up in a bow. The movie asks questions with fee answers.
As an aside, I had a friend in 2008ish built a pyramid head Halloween costume, to scale, and he was 6'3". It was goddamn terrifying :D, and I think all the gear weighed eighty pounds.
@@RandoLePerson I am not gonna argue. No internet arguments have been productive. I wish you a good day.
What stuck with me most was Sean Bean not dying in this movie
that "permanent solution to a temporary problem got me" 😂😂
isnt there another ending? i watched this movie ages ago but I dont remember the ending being that depressing😭😭
There’s been nothing as creepy as them sirens in any horror movie since.

This silent hill film was my absolute favorite everrrrr
I wonder if Chris was included in the movie to be a James Sunderland-esque kind of thing in a potentional sequel. Lost wife, and ties to Silent Hill, although, it wouldn't be in line with the deeper story of SH2.
Yeah, you can tell they were teasing the third movie taking a bit of the plot from silent hill 2 and who knows they probably were going to mix in downpour since you see the prison bus from downpour go there also.
@@atomic747 Oh i read about it some more, and apparentely, Chris was included because the higher ups thought the movie lacked a male presence.
