THE WOMAN (2011) Explained | Movie Recap

- THE WOMAN (2011) is a film about a man that comes across a woman who appears to be completely wild and feral. He decides to capture her and attempts to teach her to become a civilized person. The film is definitely carried by Pollyanna McIntosh’s performance as the titular woman. The film had an interesting plot and did enough to keep me interested until the film’s BRUTAL and BLOODY climax.

I thought that the teacher was concerned for Peggy because Chris got her pregnant.
@HorrorMine you missed Alot like about Peggy being Pregnant and The Dogs t there's a book also this is a Trilogy Offering The Woman and Darling .The Eyeless Girls name is Socket Cleek ( Chris's and Bell's Daughter). Peggy was also Pregnant by her Father. The teacher helped in the movie showing the daughter was pregnant by her father and that socket Cleek was the other daughter they hit away like a dog are you catching on yet?? Also it was to show that the father and the son are psychopaths and hate all women. The father is grooming the Nasty little son with his sickness.
Did you completely miss the fact Chris got his own daughter pregnant? It's a pretty big plot point and it's strange you neglected to mention it. I also think you missed the point of Peggy's side plot by saying it shouldn't have been in the movie so allow me to offer a different perspective...
Its hinted at the very beginning of the film The Woman had a baby at some point in the wilderness, but the baby is killed (this is a theory but I believe it's by the animal she attacks in her cave at the beginning)
If you pay close attention, the only person who actually showed mercy and kindness to the Woman apart from Darlin was Peggy. Belle had an opportunity to kill Chris and free the Woman early on in the film, but ultimately decided not to. This made her nothing but an accomplice in the Women's eyes.
But anyway, if you watch the film with subtitles, youll notice the Woman refers to Peggy as "Mother" knowing shes pregnant. As a feral woman who recently lost her own baby, she probably felt an urge to protect Peggy and her unborn baby. In the end, Peggy's pregnancy was honestly the most important plot point because it not only connected her and the Woman, but considering she got pregnant by rape by her own father, it was what truly hammered in the films message about 'who's actually the bad guy" What I loved about this movie is it really makes the viewer think, which is why it's such a shame so many youtubers don't dive deeper into this film in these review videos. Sorry if I seemed to come off as rude but its frustrating alot of people who review this movie don't take the time to really think about how deep it actually is 😅
This was one of my very first videos so i didn’t explore it as much as I could’ve. I didn’t catch on that Chris could’ve gotten her pregnant although I did catch on that he did have sex with her although for some reason didn’t connect two and two when I made this video. While Peggy being pregnant is very important, I feel that it should’ve been Belle who explores and finds that out, not Ms. Raton, who I still feel was completely useless and detracts from the entire story. Everything Ms. Raton did could’ve been done by Belle and led to her redemption arc. She was just as guilty as Chris but was also a victim of his abuse and just could’ve build up the courage to do the right thing.
You didn’t come off as rude at all by the way! I love discussing movies with my viewers and I always like it when they mention something I missed (I miss a lot of things). Discussing movies is my favorite thing to do! Thanks for your comment!
@TheRogueRaven Exactly I was like he didn't get this movie @all. There's A Trilogy Offering The Woman and Darling. As Well as a book byJack Ketchum. Umm Chris was Raping Peggy every night. Bell knew about Chris molesting his daughter Peggy locking their own daughter away socket that they were sociopath and rapist both the son and the father so the mother did deserve it as well. I'm trying very hard not to spoil this maybe if he watches it again or does a little bit of Google searching he might catch on! Like he like you did with the eye disease ANOPHTHALMIA. Ms. Ratone helped with 4 plot lines. Brian probably stepped in Sockets 💩 Poop? Child molestation abuse psychopath and so many other plot lines actually you really missed so much in this movie Man ,not you Raven right on it was really a great movie!
What was the handicap the girl had?
How did the feral woman get pregnant tho?
Actually, you could have missed it since it’s symbolized by the same candle seen next to Peggy’s bed as the one Chris places next to the Woman during the sexual assault scene. Ms. Raton is also a lesbian, which hammers home Chris as the ultimate misogynistic force of the entire film.
The mother isn't actually innocent if she allowing her own daughter to be chained up and live like an animal because she is embarrassed that she is handicapped.
You’re right, she’s a terrible person for allowing that to happen to Socket and the Woman. I still believe she is also a victim of Chris’ mental abuse and should’ve left a long time ago.
@@HorrorMine no, the children were the victims, they didn’t choose to be born with a homicidal maniac for a father, Belle chose to marry and have kids with him, if The Woman didn’t interfere Belle would have let Chris break Darlin’ like he broke Peggy
I also believe even without Chris in the picture Belle was a horrible mother because she was completely oblivious to what was going on with her kids, if Peggy was already having morning sickness this means she was pregnant for at least a couple of months and Belle didn’t even notice, WHAT KIND OF MOTHER DOESN’T REALIZE HER OWN TEENAGE DAUGHTER THAT LIVES WITH HER IS PREGNANT?! If it happened to me and I tried to hide it my mother would have noticed within weeks, Ms. Raton noticed it, even The Woman noticed it after just staring at her for a few seconds. Brian was also showing some signs of sociopathy and mysoginy that she was ignoring. All because she did’t want to assume just how f*cked up her “family” really was so she just rather close her eyes and let it happen, she didn’t know half the things were happening in her home
The only mistake that belle made was she should have left chris a long time ago...now its too late
@@lauracerqueiramachado8979 If you can't see that Belle was a victim of Chris and his extreme abuse, and completely broken into submission by him, then you have the IQ of a rock, and no understanding at all of what extreme physical and mental can do to a person. If you were in her situation, you would likely be no different. Because it would have been trained and beaten into you. Because if you were anything other than the obedient and wife he wanted you to be, you would be savagely beaten and tortured death. You may think that you would be different, and that you would resist, or fight back, or leave, but if it were that simple and easy there wouldnt be women trapped in abusive relationships with psychopathic partners. You would be under the boot of someone so much more physically and mentally dominant than you, that any kind of resistance to it wouldnt even be a thought in your mind, let alone something you would actually risk attempting. And you would have no other option but to comply and submit to it. That is a reality that most people cannot comprehend, but it happens all the time in abusive relationships. And its happened to women much stronger, smarter, and much more willful than you think yourself to be. Belle absolutely was a victim in this story. Saying she wasn't because she chose to marry him and stay with him is complete and utter nonsense, and total ignorance of the realities of extremely abusive relationships.
It’s not easy for people who have been abused and brainwashed for years to speak up or to rebel and fight back against their abusers. I think the movie portrayed the characters turmoil and how each of them dealt with their traumas in their own way
I hate the ending. The teacher and mother suffered more than they should while the 2 boys instantly died.
Ms.Raton reason to be there was that peggy was pregnant by her father, Ms. Raton got killed because he knew she could find that out, in the movie we never saw peggy w no boyfriend. The little girl was the woman's kid why? in the beginning of the movie we could see she gave birth to a red haired baby. That was that child. That's why she took her away. She said mother's baby... meaning she was the biological mother. That's my analysis.
I need to watch this movie again
No that's absolutely incorrect. The woman's baby died. You're right that Peggy was pregnant with her own father's baby but the woman was not. Is that's what you're saying? That Darlin is the woman's and the dad's baby? No.
The subplot with Ms. Raton was important to the story and the only reason why the film ended the way it did. There have been a lot of comments saying this but they missed some points. Belle being trapped in an abusive relationship with Chris took too long to do the right thing and didn't do it correctly. That's something she can't be blamed for because it's common in chronic abusive relationships that victims have to muster the courage to stand up to themselves and that often takes a long time. Confronting him alone was wrong though and it led to her being knocked out. Ms Raton, however, is an outsider and does not share Belle's fears. The storyline with her and Peggy emphasizes the building of a relationship between them and the fact that Ms. Raton tried to save Peggy from her father who she correctly suspected of impregnating her. Ms. Raton however also made the mistake of confronting Chris about it which led to her death to keep it a secret. They should have contacted the authorities behind Chris' back. Peggy knows Ms.Raton is her only hope of escaping this hellish family and seeing her being killed sent her over the edge prompting her to release the woman.
Ms. Raton was vital to the plot. Her reveal of Peggy's pregnancy is the catalyst setting the final act into motion. Ms. Raton goes to the house and tells Chris and Belle about the pregnancy>Chris attacks her and throws her to the dogs(and Socket)>the Woman and Peggy hear Ms. Raton getting eaten alive>Peggy's finally had enough-her father kills the only person who gave a crap about her, in a viciously brutal way for NO reason>this gives her the courage to free the Woman>the Woman kills Brian, Chris, and Belle (who did deserve it)>Peggy, Darlin', Socket, and the Woman are finally free. Not that Peggy and Darlin's lives are going to be good but far better than what they were--and that says a lot.
Thank you for your review, but I do want to note the fact that as a teacher Ms. Raton would be a mandatory reporter, and as pretty much the only person in Peggy’s life that actually cares for her of course it would push her to get involved (even if she doesn’t do it in necessarily the right ways.) Think about it in terms of a child in your own life, even one that’s not family, I guarantee you would try to step in SOMEHOW.
I think without Ms. Raton the movie would be a bit too one sided, we needed a character that’s not a part of the main family unit to “root” for, and I think Ms. Raton is an interesting parallel to The Woman in that way.
Of course you’re entitled to your opinion, but to me the movie would definitely be lacking without the Peggy/Ms. Raton subplot!
You are right. However, the term is "mandated reporter". And as a teacher, at the very least she has to contact Child Protective Services if she even suspects abuse or neglect.
@@AndNoted I have heard both terms used interchangeably, maybe it depends on where you’re from. Either way the point still stands
Idk about the "rooting for" part with Ms Raton. I think that her role in the story is important as being a the catalyst that sets things in motion and pushes forward the final act. But as far as someone to "root for", not so much. It was painfully obvious that she was doomed from the moment she set foot in that house. But her getting caught up in the violence and killed is what gave Peggy the resolve to finally do something and free the feral woman. Peggy and the feral woman were the ones all along to root for, and the ones who were going to "save the day" so to speak. Ms Raton was just another victim fed to the buzzsaw that was Chris. But she was an important victim, as she served as "the straw that broke the camel's back", and gave Peggy the resolve required to do what needed to be done.
The acting in that slap and brushing the teeth scene was amazing... I can't imagine the behind the scenes or outtakes for the actors.
Fun fact the force needed to bite through a carrot is the same for a finger- just let the adrenaline guide you to bite a finger off to damage an attacker 😁
Yikes!
You and spooky rice are one of my favorites to go to about horror movies. Keep it up. You got a subbed.
Thank you so much! I truly appreciate it 😀
The first movie in the series is called Offspring. Alot of people don't know this for some reason!
Offspring
The woman
Darlin'
There is a book before any of the movies. It's called Off Season, and its the very beginning of the story.
The teacher and Peggy storyline is vital to the story , it shows that Peggy herself is a prisoner and the teacher is trying to save peggy. Also how is Peggy is going to free the prisoner if she herself is a prisoner? You think things are so easy
Great review thanks for making it.
Thanks a lot! I’m glad you liked it!
I started off at Darlin, then heard the Woman came before it. And then when you said this was the second in a trilogy I tried to find you doing the first one.. It's not up yet. ;(
I agree background on the actual family itself and the dog kid they keep in the barn or the woman herself would have been way more interesting. “And it’s at this moment Chris realizes he F$&ed Up!” Literally lol 🤣🤣🤣
LOL! He just had that look on his face! 😅
New subscriber. Thanks for the great upload.
Thank you for making quality content!
It’s my absolute pleasure! I’m very happy that you enjoy the content! There is plenty more content on the way 😃
There's a end credit scene about Darling.
Oh wow! I didn’t even notice. I’ll have to go back and check it out and then go watch Darlin!
Might want to watch Offspring first
Just watched this, most stressful movie I've seen in a long time.
The men didn't suffer enough. The teacher made me hate her and then got so much worse than she deserved so fast I got whiplash. Did not know it was part of a series.
Gonna have to check out the other 2 movies because what the FUCK.
"We're nearly at 100 subscribers" and now you're at 30k 🤗🥳🙌🏻 great job
Thank you so much! I still can’t believe it
40k now. That's great growth
Read Off Season before you watch Offspring! They can’t make Off Season into a movie because the book is incredibly graphic but it’s technically the first of the series
Off Season is fucking crazy!! I read Off Season before I ever even knew any of the movies existed. And the first movie I saw was Offspring. So having read Off Season and watched Offspring before seeing The Woman, it was really difficult for me to feel any sympathy for the woman when she was Chris's captive. She was a cannibal who murdered and ate people, and it was very hard for me not to see her as deserving of the treatment from Chris.
I didn’t know about any of these movies. I saw Darlin first so I’ll be watching the other two soon and I truly hope there will be another movie do to how Darlin ended 👍👍👍👍
This was 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥summary
Can’t wait to see the sequel !
Also no talk of the dad being possibly getting his teenage daughter pregnant?
Yeah it was hinted at towards the end but I didn’t really make that connection when I made the video 😔
@@HorrorMine i didnt make that connection really til the third time of watching the movie. Lol. Quality content by the way. Thank u 😊
Thank you very much! I’m glad you enjoy the content!
I thought it may have been the brother
@@b.cardidelnegro1432 Anything's possible as it's never really confirmed but Chris Cleek hints that he has had sex with Peggy in the past. Plus it seems like she pretty much hates the little pervert and I don't think she would let him do that.
I really love these videos and this guy it's great
Thank you!
Over 300 subs now and I just subscribed! I enjoyed the video as I have never watched The woman. I did watch the trailer and made it a point to not see it. I don't care too much for gory movies with women getting tortured/rape. Hope to see more! 👍
Thank you for subscribing. There is plenty more coming on the channel!
I'm trying to understand why the woman took the little girl. I also thought that the other girl that the family was hiding away was somehow related to the woman. Great review however I was curious on why the little girl was taken.
The daughter that was hidden away “Socket” was also a Cleek. She was hidden away because they were ashamed that she was born with Anopthalmia (no eyes). This is something that Chris holds over Belle. I believe that the Woman took Darlin as she now saw that both of her parents were gone and she was nice and caring towards her the whole time. I also believe she is trying to re create her tribe as she is the sole survivor of the cannibalistic tribe from Offspring, the first movie.
@@HorrorMine Ok. I'm now watching Darling to understand more. Thanks alot😊
Of course! Enjoy Darlin! I’d love to know what you think of it.
@@HorrorMine Hey,😊 I didn't like the Darling movie too much. From 1-10 I'd give it a 6.
That’s a very fair rating. It definitely wasn’t as good as The Woman, but not terrible.
This movie is a brainworm, it has been around since 2011 and every rewatch brings more insight and revelation. Lucky McKee created an absolute masterpiece, with a stellar cast and an incredible soundtrack by Sean Spillane, and the story of how he came up with the songs used in the movie is just as interesting as the movie itself, look it up and enjoy. One of the best crafted horror movies since 2010, and it never gets old.
Can you Please Please recap the movie High Tension. Love your breakdowns.
I just found your channel and would like to say that it's extremely entertaining! Thank you :)
I'm so glad I found you here explaining the dog- girl. I totally agree with you about the teacher. The mom pissed me off when she had the piece of wood in her hand, she had the option to knock his ass out! I'll subscribe to you channel!!
I remember seeing the first two of this series: Offspring and the Woman..I love weird movies.
This movie is bloody gory and interesting.
It sure was! I hope the film gains more attention and gains a cult following because I love it!
@@HorrorMine yeah I hope the same thing too !
10:15 best part of the movie. I did not see that coming at all, it was so out of left field I laughed so hard. 😂😂😂 meanwhile the kids watching like it’s nothing omg

Yes please let's see the other two in the trilogy
This movie is way too underrated
I’m over hear astonished by someone eating a heart, it’s pure muscle
Can you do the offspring and darlin movie explain????
Absolutely my friend! Thank you for the request! Darlin movie explained will be my next video!
Darlin’ movie explained is out now!
I love the Jorge Masvidal reference.
Perfect place for people like me who enjoys horror content
I was guessing it was going to turn out the father got his daughter pregnant and that's why the teacher subplot was put in.
You guessed right! that's what happened
Did you miss the part at the end of the credits? Try to figure out what that means. It's strange.
Pollyanna McIntosh Has Come A Good Way Even Tho She's In The Walking Dead
What about the strange scene after the credit roll? I still don't understand that.
It’s absolutely bizarre and I never saw that scene when originally making this video. It appears to me to show the audience just how innocent Darlin is despite everything that has happened. She’s oblivious to everything going on even though her whole family got killed, everything is all happy and cartoony to her. Possibly why flowers were growing out of the skeleton. Finally, hinting that she is going to be getting her own movie, which she got :). That’s my take on it.
whats the tile of the first movie?
The family sucks, but like the men in this family are particularly terrible. I wonder how many women they've done this to.
I’m sure they’ve done it to plenty of women as it almost seemed natural to them unfortunately
@@HorrorMine I'd be inclined to agree. The dad didn't even have to say much besides "get the basement ready" and they all seemed to know the drill.
Turns out I actually have this book! Now I'm excited to read it.
Awesome! Let me know how it compares to the movie!
@@HorrorMine SO As they are more novellas than anything else I read both Off Season (which apparently somewhat inspired Offspring) and The Woman and I have Thoughts as I often do. But as you do not have like a Discord or anything like that I will try condense them! There's a big gap between the publications 1977 and 2011. Don't know what exactly possessed him to pick this particular yarn up again. The book seems to follow fairly closely to the film. There's some more context to the family dynamics. More hints towards their other daughter before her reveal. More understanding that the Cleeks are just as uncivilized as The Woman. They simply mask this. Especially Chris and Brian. The text basically states neither have any real emotions and manufactures them to seem normal which is a primary trait of sociopathy. There's a roving POV between all the characters so we get insight into the Woman and her motivations as well. The switch between the cannibals being the villains in the 1st novel and the "civilized people" being the villains is interesting. The 1st novel is a much clearer bawdy slasher. Clearly inspired The Hills Have Eyes. Like think that but more sex and brutality. The second is a treatise on misogyny and how men mistreat women in their lives and it goes in a cycle. The Woman feels no love for the dad but kinship with the wife and daughters. She never begs for help or appeals to the dad. Only the girls. Even if they can't understand her words because she speaks brokenly. Ms. Raton was in the novel. She was kind of a representation of when shit hit the fan and Chris abandoned all manner of civility. I have a lot of other thoughts on Ketchum's particular brand of prose and the flow of the story but that's my usual nitpicking media analysis. I shall spare you all that. Sorry for a text dump. 😅
I think the families youngest daughter is somehow the womans daughter.
The Woman adopts her in a way at the end of the film. There is a sequel to the movie specifically about her called Darlin, which I haven’t seen yet. It may explain more and explore their relationship.
@@HorrorMine ah ok. I only thought that could be the case coz of her baby dreams at the beginning.
That slap was so random.
Shes like a Mortal Kombat secret character 👍
I understand she's wild, but imagine if that was just some chick camping
I wonder who make those sick movies
Can you narrate Return of the living dead part one please, thank you
Damn chris beat his wife, turns around and clocks the teacher 😭
If I remember right those two locked up girl are sisters one was locked up one the mother left it in the woods and it was rise by wild animals
What I didn't understand was, whose baby was that in the opening scenes. In the cave?
I think that may have just been a dream or hallucination.

It’s called “Offspring” and I should be covering it sometime soon
I don’t get it. Why did the woman kill the teacher? Does she kill everyone except kids?
2:26 ok hard truth. One kid vs 3 kids is not going to end well; ever get in a fight against 3 others at the same time? not just blocking one punch, but 3 or combinations of kicks; tackles etc all at once? wanna get your ass kicked for getting into others business, if you're smart you'd walk away because nothing good would come out of that; they'll beat you up and continue bullying the girl.

I thought the same thing initially and didn’t think that it fit well with the film. I changed my mind the second time around and the music grew on me.
I like how this guy complains about no one doing the right moral thing in a horror movie. Lmao
Nothing on this being a commentary on womens experience in a patriarchal society?? Also teachers are mandated reporters.
I saw it more as a lesson in hypocrisy and the human hunger for power.
And how people can act like monsters while thinking they are decent. Like the left.
Funny how a movie titled "The Woman" was supposed to be scary 🤣
So gross and sick my God

You’ve enlightened me.
Who made her pregnant?
It is hinted at towards the end of the film that Chris Cleek got his own daughter pregnant. When he goes off on his rant about women, he insinuated that he had sex with Peggy.
Bell was not a victim in this movie. It’s obviously an activist movie which is dumb, but at least they get that part right. Bell had a responsibility as a parent not allow that kind of abuse around her children and get them out of there. She had literally every opportunity even before the film started as she obviously knew they were keeping a feral human in the damn dog pens. Yeah, obviously she’s not the monster that the dad is but she had an absolute duty to the children to get them together while the dad was hitting on his secretary at work or out hunting people and go directly to the cops and say hey, my psycho husband abuses us and, oh yeah, is keeping our feral daughter in our dog pens.
why does anyone need this, or any movie, explained? Just watch the damn thing and form your own thoughts. Stop letting someone think for you.
I feel like you didnt explain nothing.. you just narrated the story..
Correct. It would be the same thing as “explaining” an event to someone who wasn’t present. So in that sense you would be recounting the event or “explaining” the event to them in detail since they weren’t there. This movie doesn’t need a whole lot of “in depth” explaining, it’s pretty straight forward. I do explain the definition of Anophthalmia and the possible backstory of Socket, which is never directly addressed in the film and only alluded to. But I understand what you’re trying to get at and thanks for your comment 👍
3 piece and a soda... thats not funny in the way you were using it bro, thats fucked up...
