Version exclusives mainly exist for two reasons:
    1. Money
    2. To encourage trading
That being said, I am also in the camp of people who wished that version-exclusives never existed. I think Scarlet and Violet have an especially massive problem with version exclusives with how many viable VGC Pokemon that are version-exclusive like Raging Bolt and Flutter Mane.

Actually find the Violet paradox Pokemon to make more sense in the story. And for Violet to make more sense as a story in general. The professor creates an AI of himself for one. That makes way more sense for a future game than a past game. So much so that I genuinely assumed that the ending to Scarlett must be different. I was confused to find out its the exact same. I was genuinely thinking to myself there's no way that they create an AI in Scarlet it has to be something different. Also the robot Pokemon are much more "scary" and weird. In the context of the game where all the characters are freaked out by them and wonder if they're even Pokemon. The Scarlet paradox Pokemon are still very obviously Pokemon. theyre organic living creatures. Even if you've never seen one before you could still very much assume that they are Pokemon even within the context of the game. However the violet paradox Pokemon are literal robots. You look at them and wonder if they're even Pokemon or if they're just machines. Which makes way more sense for how the characters react to them. And it helps with the creepy vibe of area 0 that they were going for. Having basically just caveman versions of Pokemon isn't scary or eerie. And it really doesn't support the vibe that these Pokemon are extremely dangerous and unknown that the game tries to set up. I feel like you could very easily guess what Pokemon of the past could do. Pretty much the exact same thing that Pokemon of the now do if not slightly worse because they arent as evolved genetically. These robot Pokemon tho? Yeah we have no idea about these things. They exist far off in the future. we don't know what they're capable of. And if they're even alive. Which is what the game is going for. The game constantly refers to how it's extremely dangerous down there and they don't know what these Pokemon are capable of. Which is how arvin's Pokemon gets hurt while he's looking for his parents. So much so that a Pokemon center couldn't even heal it. I can't buy that for the past Pokemon because they're just Pokemon but ancient. But I can buy that for these future Pokemon that are literal robots. One of which according to the Pokedex is a literal death machine created from what used to be the real terrakion. presumably by team plasma when they say "evil organization" That we would have absolutely no way of knowing what they could do. Some of these are literal programmed death machines. It says the same for iron crown as well. It's not even a Pokemon it's a literal machine created by humans. That is far more terrifying than just a dinosaur Pokemon. And much more believable that it could cause irreparable damage to arvin's Pokemon. When I hear the battle music in area zero. The eerie vibe it tries to give off. I feel it in violet. Because these Pokemon are just weird. In Scarlet though? It's still nice music but it doesn't feel nearly the same because these are just Pokemon. In violet its like. Ok wtf are these things. Are they even alive. Which the characters do say and acknowledge in both games. So to me that just simply makes more sense in violet. Heck maybe these Pokemon are extinct in the future. Maybe that's why they are artificially created machines. We know terrakion is extinct now considering the only one that existed was turned into a robot by "an evil organization" that's a lot more interesting to think about

Not only do version exclusives need to be dropped, but even Trade Evolutions. And funny thing is, Game Freak kinda has this sentiment already. It's still mechanically in the game, but through raids or even overworld encounters, NEEDING to trade for a Pokemon has become a thing of the past. Game Freak has even stopped making Pokemon that need to be traded to evolve with the last trade evolution Pokemon being Alolan Golem, and if we aren't counting regional forms, Gen 6 was the last gen to introduce trade evolution Pokemon. This proves that Game Freak does have an ear to the ground, and forcing ridiculous requirements like Gouging Fire and Raging Bolt is not only completely unnecessary, but a conscious decision. To not only have to pick the correct version, but the get the DLC and have the player catch around the ballpark of 300 Pokemon (because there is some overlap between dexs, thank GOD) is honestly ridiculous.
I'm in the boat where Purple is my favorite color and the future Pokemon looked cool to me when I saw the leaks. Only to find out Flutter Mane is the best Pokemon since Zacian-Crowned AFTER the fact.

Version exclusives outside of the cover art legendary are literally pointless. Fun fact Heart Gold and Soul Silver removed this effect from the cover legendary Pokémon, get 16 gym badges and speak to a certain NPC and you can get both Ho-Oh and Lugia in a single game. This kind of feature is now removed by plot, sword and shield your rival will always get the other legendary Pokémon despite being a weakling and unworthy to be a Pokémon trainer according to themself. Scarlet and Violet the time machine gets butterfly effected out of existence so you can't use it to get the other paradox Pokémon you need. Honestly the dumbest one jas got to be Ambipom and Gliscor's lines being version exclusive Pokémon, basically unless you're trading spare shinies for legendary/Paradox Pokémon you need Nintendo switch online is virtually worthless in scarlet and Violet as they more often than not release cross version mass outbreaks that render the initial version exclusivity worthless as you can just literally wait for one of these to be announced and complete a Pokédex accordingly. They could probably fix the bugs in Scarlet and Violet with the space saved by removing several shiny locks and the stupidity of version exclusivity that they just ignore later anyway. So why even have bothered making the Pokémon version exclusive anyway if your going to go back on it months - a year or so from release? Heck you can even cheat the version exclusivity by using Pokémon home! Simply own any game interfaceable with home and drop the required Pokémon into Scarlet or Violet, you can even use Pokémon Go if you've caught the Pokémon your transferring in the game your sending it to. So many ways to simply ignore the rules built into the games, rendering many of them meaningless to have been implemented in the first place.

Even works for most Paradox Pokémon so you can get them with your OT despite their inability to create Eggs if you value that. I really liked that when I used it.

  • @justyouraveragegamer6142

Its worth mentioning that if you play multiplayer in scarlet and violet you can just get version exclusives that way. If you own violet and join a scarlet game of a friend you can catch their version exclusives because you exist in their host game. This became a full on feature in the DLC where some legendaries can only be obtained if you're playing in a group. For example in Scarlet. You can get reshiram in single player. But in Violet you get zekrom in single player. But if you play multiplayer quests you can get the opposite. This also applies to the event raids for walking wake and iron leaves. I just recently did this with my friend yesterday. They played on my game so they could get an iron leaves. And I joined theirs to get walking wake. This applies to any overworld spawn as well. If you want some Scarlet paradox Pokemon and you own violet. Just join up with someone who owns Scarlett go into area zero and catch them yourself. Because you won't be in your game anymore. You'll be in your friends version of the game. You'll be participating in their story and their version of the game. My friend and I discovered this when we joined each other for the first time and my friend was baffled that they could just catch one of my version exclusives

An example of version exclusivity that makes NO SENSE. In Pokemon S/M/US/UM You gain access to The Alternate World. It's basically the opposite version of whichever game you have. So, if you're playing Sun and you go through the portal, you'll be in a version of Alola with an Altar of the Moone and a Lake of the Moone instead of an Altar of the Sunne and a Lake of the Sunne. You are now playing on the map of the other game... however this only inverts the time. So, unfortunately, even though you are now in the world of Pokemon Moon, you can still only catch the Pokemon available in Pokemon Sun, and the Cosmog you will find at the alternate lake will NOT evolve into the other legendary, no matter how much grinding in the alternate world you do. It's BS, why not let the player have the other set of Pokemon? It's late game content anyway...
Furthermore, in US/UM, you gain access to Ultra Wormholes. You can play a minigame of riding your box legendary, steering your Pokemon as you search for rare wormholes which will take you to places where you can catch legendaries... but only some of the legendaries... Despite the fact we are traveling through these Ultra Wormholes, which are basically taking us to alternate universes in different places and times... You are still limited. For example, you can only find Dialga in Ultra Sun by travelling through the wormholes... and Palkia in Ultra Moon. And you guessed it, Giratina can only be found if you have both Dialga and Palkia in your party while your travelling through the wormholes.

Atleast Game Freak do promote trading Pokemon among people through these tactics. Meanwhile in Pokemon Go, you really can't complete your pokedex (especially legendaries/shinies) through only trading. There are region exclusive Pokemon, meaning if someone lives in America and wants a mon that's exclusive to Asia, Niantic will expect them to either travel to Asia to catch that mon, or spend star dust (the in game currency) to be able to trade for it to complete the pokedex. Moreover, the stronger variants of regular mons (ie, shadow mons) can't even be traded, meaning that you will have to get them yourself only. Niantic can only actively discourage trading more.

Trading shouldn’t be mandatory. just like what you said with legends you can not trade and still complete the game Fully. it’s just a complete game with no events Exclusives and it even gave you a alternative to Evolving trade pokémon without Actualy trading. Something I wish happens someday is that they sell 1 version, but then have something in-game plot wise allow for a player to choose their version. Looking at the western release of Yo-Kai Watch 3 for my example, because literally there's a plot check that's like "ok what's better Sushi or Tempura" (Japanese versions were Sushi and Tempura). Something extra nice is that there was another prompt or two asking again "do you like this or this" in an obvious way to change your mind. This makes it so players during the main story choose a version without needing to do it at purchase, and means they only need 1 version.
You'd still need to play multiple playthroughs, but fortunately you can have multiple saves with switch profiles (although I'd love there to be even just 2 save slots in Pokemon, Yo-Kai Watch 3 has 2 and the previous ones have 3 slots, so I'd like Pokemon to catch up in that regard)

Also, pokemon wasn't as popular in my super duper ultra religious little town, so even at it's peak it was never more than like 1/4 of the kids in my grade level that were into it.
When the ds and I got my own and a copy of pearl (16th birthday, no car, but still treated as a special birthday where you got to ask for a more expensive gift) the same thing had happened where I live. Pokemon's popularity among my friends had completely dropped off. I was the only one of my friend group with a DS who was still into pokemon at that point lol in large part *because* I thought I would finally get to trade and battle with my friends...
