I think that the PlayStation Portal is so unbelievably specific in what it can do. For me it is perfect! but for you...? What do you think?

    • @JM-pm1yb
      @JM-pm1yb Před měsícem

I like the portal for the ease of use. I also got an open box product from Best Buy for $155. A slightly easier pill to swallow.
It also saved my PS5 gaming. I’ve put in a lot more hours into FF7 Rebirth and I intend to jump back into Infinite Wealth after I finish. I also look forward to playing FFXVI which I had already purchased on the last Black Friday.
It’s so hard for me to jump on my TV and enjoy an hour or two gaming session.
The Switch was my main driver for the first 3 to 4 years of its release, because of the ability to play it portably. I now primarily play most of my games on the Steam Deck. Yes, I also set up Chiaki. It works fine enough to negate the need for the PS Portal. I just like how easy it is using the Portal for my PS5 gaming, plus getting the benefits of using the PS5 controller.
The one thing I liked about using the Chiaki4deck was the ability to map the touch pad. But that’s really the only thing I miss. It’s really hard to beat the feel of an actual dual sense controller in handheld.
For me, this device will also save me from double dipping on games I want to play in a portable fashion. I will still purchase on Steam first if the option is there. But for those PlayStation exclusives, I’m happy to have the Portal as a somewhat portable option.

Same here , got my hands on one yesterday and I don't care to use away from home and that was never my intention. I couldn't believe how butter smooth it plays over my network. I can't say enough about the screen, the screen is marvelous, it's extremely bright. I had to turn down the brightness. I'm a sports gamer and single game player and this works perfect for me. Multiplayer is big for me too, I'll play that on my Oled.

I've been saying the contrary about this device, since before it even launched. And even predicted it would sell over expectations. And I'm in the opposite use case as you, i just love handheld gaming. Sure, some games i prioritize playing on the big screen. But many genres fit the handheld style more, and has nothing to do with my situation. Turns out the Portal is good for more than just those few genres tho... 😎👍

I never streamed from any device to another device due to my internet not being the greatest, that was until the Chiaki software for the Deck. It was the easiest thing I had done for my device and the latency is nearly nonexistent for me which surprised me. I would at least suggest you give it a try since you already have the tools to do so and then make your comparison. I wouldn't be able too as I don't have a PSP (Playstation Portal) and with how Chiaki runs for me I don't see myself ever needing one as it does nearly everything you said your portal can do.

I also have a very special, if not crazy, use case. My TV in my living room is comparatively small (60") because the living room is so big and the sitting area is so far away from the TV. I use the portal in the living room, but the TV is still on and the sound comes through the Atmos system. So I have a relatively big screen, I don't have to buy a new TV and I can enjoy the good sound on the system.

I enjoy streaming my Xbox to the Steamdeck. It's a great value added feature to have for handhelds, but I wouldn't buy a device that only streams. I have a top end OLED TV where the input lag is non existent... I think it makes me a bit more sensitive to streaming input lag. So a big thumbs up for streaming technology, but it is (for the time being) a watered down way to play games so I still need a device that can also play games natively.

  • @lxcas5401
    @lxcas5401 Před měsícem +3

I changed my mind on getting the ps5 since there’s no point in spending $400 on a console then another $200 for a streaming device when I can just use the steam deck and if they make a revision on the vita or psp I’ll for sure get that if they make it.

You can steam PS5, Xbox and PC on any smarthphone or tablet. If you already have them. Also if you are playing on the same house as wherebyoue console is, the PS5 is much more powerful than the steamdeck. But the steamdeck is still a good PConsole.

I don't have a portal; I have a steam deck and have used chiaki to play God of War Ragnarok and it played just fine, but it's just not the same the steam deck L1/R1 bumpers are so bad compared to a dual sense. Not to mention the Dpad on the dual sense is a lot better too. The only time I use my steam deck outside of the house is at a hotel, maybe in a car if I'm not driving the family, and even then it's hard as heck to see the screen with all the reflection. Most people I think play their portables in their own home on the couch or in the bed. The portal definitely has it's place. I've not held one but if it feels like a dual sense it's by far the most comfortable hand held.

Chiaki had bad screen tearing and issues for me on deck, no matter what I played and after reinstalling several times. I grabbed the portal because of that and only play lighter games on it (Octopath, Dave the Diver, etc) and haven't had any issues. But could be because of how selective I've been. It's been great for me with how things go at home (sharing a living room TV for example) but can see how it wouldn't work for others.

  • @EisOfSpades7

If I used my playstation more, this would be something I would more heavily consider, but I'll just stick with the deck and since I have more than enough lag using steam link on deck, im not sure the portal would work for me anyway. The joys of living in the boondocks. Love the content on the portal though, keep it coming. Is there any ui exclusive to the portal, or is its only settings/ui just to connect to the ps5 system?

Once again, I recommend you pick up dbrand portal thumb grips. I know you tried others, but these feel very close to the dualsense sticks in size and accuracy. The smaller ones make it feel as if it has some input delay since they're shorter and more loose. The Portal itself has little to no input delay. It's actually cuz of the smaller sticks, and since it isn't 100% smooth at times. That you might think it's an input delay issue... 🤷

The discussion around the Portal is really weird. People that are the loudest about it seem (anecdotally) upset that the Portal isn't something that Sony never said it would be. Seems like the product works exactly how Sony marketed it. The fact that it isn't a Vita 2/new PSP is really the fault of those with that expectation. However, the good faith critiques seem fair - bluetooth, etc. I'm looking into getting one myself and your comments helped a lot.

I gave up on the Portal. If home, I don't have any other obligations to tend to but my own. So I can chill for hours at the desk and PS5. What I'd really like is to extend my play sessions into work during downtime, roughly 20-45 minutes per day. I cannot do that with the Portal, making it's use case extremely limited. I've used remoteplay in my home two times on my Tab S9 Ultra because I had friends over for a playthrough of Nier Replicant and Automata, which is a rare scenario.
I find portables hard to take advantage of long-term. They are bad for posture and irritates certain health related issue I face when played for long periods of time. One of my goals is to invest in a solid office chair to help improve my endurance while gaming, not looking to increase the length of each session but extend the amount of times I can play in a month without expreincing or lessening issues. Not sure if you've ever faced any posture related issues but you work out more than I do so maybe it's just me not being in shape.

Whilst I do think it's a little overpriced, you know what to expect, or people should before they buy.
It's basically what I wanted it for.
I have a switch and that's ok for being out and about, not that I really do that anyway, as I work from home and if I'm traveling abroad, I'm not generally going to have the free time to play games, so I basically wanted something to use at home to play in bed or on sofa whilst wife watching TV etc, as otherwise she has to go other room or vice versa.
I tried streaming to my iPad or Mac and I didn't like experience, and I refuse to play on my phone and pay £100 for a backbone to play on a 6" screen and worse quality controls and no haptic feedback, plus it means you can't answer messages or calls whilst playing games.
It's not perfect, it's not cheap, but I didn't want a steam deck and have to buy games I own again, and that's 3 times cost and battery life is poor as well, and I get a high visual fidelity setting that in many instances will look and run better than steam deck.
There's definitely better hardware if you actually want a portable console for sure, but they cost up to 1k plus, but that's not what this is, so it should be judged by that it is.
No one has come to market with similar products that are significantly cheaper and in my experience, this does what it's meant to do well.
I really like it, screen is very good, albeit black levels aren't amazing, but they do a job still, it's comfortable to hold, and I've only experienced any connection issues whilst trying to download a game in background (not advisable).
There's definitely a noticeable input lag difference, but it's not game breaking.
Obviously, any physical copies of games require me to get off my arse, but that's not a bad thing at my age .
    Overall, I love it

My PlayStation is hardwired with my internet speeds are 500 down and 20 up.
I've traveled with it I went to Florida on vacation twice now and it's been pretty much flawless. With that being said I was visiting my parents for Christmas and they get 800 down in 800 up speeds. And I can play using my phone as a hotspot as long as I'm getting 15 upload speed in 20 download.
When I'm away from home the only online multiplayer game I play is Diablo 4 other than that on playing single player games.

I respect people that grind their own coffee 😂 but No Portal It's FANTASTIC for $200. Especially during inflation and when your TV is tied up 😂 and yes you can now play on Starbucks now and connect to PS5 network

I have the portal and chiaki for deck however the portal is more stable for me. Chiaki at times will deteriorate in quality and become fuzzy overtime. I tried changing the bitrate it helped but still occurs.
The portal has been flawless for me.

Same man I tried Chiaki for deck and I was getting a lot of audio issues and disconnects but the portal has been just fine plus it’s more comfortable than the steam deck and the screen on the portal is beautiful

I think the portal is for a niche product. Perfect for people in the same situation as yourself. For its price, its not a bad product
