I think this is the first video that mentioned to try remote play on any other device to get a feel of the experience. Thats very good advice.
I only use mine at home and I haven’t used my PS5 on the tv since getting the portal. The screen is surprisingly vivid and personally I’m loving the portal.

  • @Lashrom

Agreed with all of your pro's and cons. It shouldn't be that much of a hassle to enable web browser (even though it's also not on the PS5 system) and use other media apps like Twitch, CZcams, Netflix to stream or watch video's. Also the lack of not having bluetooth enabled for other audio accessoires except for Sony's products is just pretty damn lame.
Overall it's a pretty good handheld/remote player. However I do have a love/hate relationship with it. That comes mostly with the quality and performance of playing some games. The delay/latency, stuttering, picture quality loss for a couple games (and mostly when online matchmaking) is pretty noticeable despite having excellent network speed at home (1 Gbps) and a pretty decent router. It's like it can't handle all the chaotic gameplay when there is too much happening so it starts getting blurry instead of having clear picture quality. Which I find pretty unfortunate. This is less noticeable when I'm using remote play on my S23 Ultra mobile crazy enough. But when the cut scenes are playing, it shows the opposite and shows the beauty of the screen.
Still find the Portal pretty usefull as I can finally play my PS5 games on the couch next to my wife watching her shows instead of sitting behind my desk more for a couple hours after already working at home.

My greatest fear is that when i throw out of window 200$, i dont get 60fps gameplay but instead jerky stuttering.. i dont mind absence of bluetooth, that cannot watch youtube and stuff..but if that thing gives me less then 50-60fps id freakin break it with sledgehammer

Thanks pal, I am in a weird spot where I can't decide whether I want this or a steam deck for strictly home use (and comparative library). While I am still internally debating, added nuance is what I was looking for indeed.

    • @ThePaulg123
      @ThePaulg123 Před 2 měsíci +2

That is a big dilemma between the 2. I guess personal opinion but a big factor is that are you for the most part primarily a ps5 gamer? And want the convenience of more ps5 gaming opportunities in your home? On the toilet ,a cheeky couple of rounds of Helldivers (I guess not short as the session can take ages) /short half an hour play through of a very long story driven game like elden ring for example, maybe you are stuck on one of the particular bosses, forget the names now but you only have half an hour, or even as little as 15 minutes spare for a quick burst attempt then I'd say the portal, that's the camp I'm falling into.
I don't have one yet but I'm liking the idea of ways of fitting in some gaming on a small scale/short notice and being able to do it at home in any room regardless of what TV is in use and putting my headset on or maybe I don't have time even for setting the headphones up, and quickly want to go straight in then I can do that. God of war Ragnarok i would like to complete that game, and having a portal and slowly chipping away at the game sounds ideal to me. Sorry for the tangent but I thought maybe just some thoughts and scenarios from just a regular gamer/dad with lack of time to play, and logistical nightmares that also prevent me from playing at all would give you a perspective that might or might not help your decision a little depending on your life circumstances day to day in general.
On the flip side for you also there is the steam deck option, if you have ps5 but have some PC games you want to try for the first time, want lots of use case options like streaming media/listening to Spotify (shocking that that isn't an option on the portal but hey ho) installing emulators to play your favourite classic consoles and games from back in the day and all round havng lots of customisation tjen for sure the steam deck is a strong option, again my personal take on the steam deck would be that i would I only consider the newer oled screen version as the standard one would drive me mad as the quality of that isn't the back and lack of good blacks and contrast is lacking.
Last point is also the price which is a pro and con, steam deck has much use case options and customisation but is a lot more expensive than the portal, compare that to the portal being much less expensive but is literally a dedicated ps5 game streaming device and nothing but a very handy and helpful one to the right person.
A very good extra important point between the two I forgot , is that regardless of internet connection you can play the steam deck absolutely anywhere as long as the game doesn't require internet connection Vs the portal absolutely requires it and if you don't have an active, good solid internet connection then it just won't work full stop.

@@ThePaulg123 Hey pal, thanks for the detailed response, I don't mind the "tangent" one bit, it's an echo of a lot of my personal thoughts while in the rabbit hole in this past week. I ultimately decided I'll go with the Steam Deck (with a slight delay due to the increased disposable income requirement over the Portal). To return the tangent with a "tangent" so to speak, everything is from a user to user case basis, and from my user basis it seems like the Portal fills a niche I can fill otherwise. Simply put, I already have a pretty decent tablet, which I can remote stream on - sure, the form factor is not as comfortable and dragging two unconnected devices around is more complicated, but not that much. Also, my tablet has an HDR screen; honestly, in my consideration the screen was of big emphasis, as playing on something at a high resolution usually beats anything else, however if I already have a tablet that is going to work just as well as the Portal for remote play *and* even distribute a better image, it renders the device quite redundant.
The reasons why I am going to go for the deck is the stop-and-start aspects of it - while it's going to be relatively quick to do it with the SSD in the PS, waking up two devices and them connecting again is certainly slower than just starting one from sleep mode. What is more, being a bit economically and environmentally focused, I probably won't be able to get out of my head how it "won't be worth it" to start the PS and its high W consumation for just a small burst of playtime, which will eventually lead me to avoid using the device except in long periods of TV unuse (e.g. when the mrs and I are watching a long movie). I think for those cases I will already be in a comfortable enough position to have the tablet remote play option started, and for the smaller cases, the steamdeck should provide a decent enough experience in its own right (less input lag at lower frames / lower resolution, but OLED kinda ends the math equal between it and the Portal in terms of performance for me).
Good luck with your own choice paralysis, brother!

The Steam Deck can do everything the portal can (minus the haptic triggers) plus it's an entire PC. I use Chiaki on the Steam Deck to play my PS5 more than I actually use my PS5 normally. If you're going to spend $200 on the Portal you can still get the 64GB Steam Deck for $350 or get a used Steam Deck for around $300. It's not even a contest between the two for value.

I had a lot of luck buying on brand new last week of a Facebook seller for £150 and haven’t had a chance to use it yet as I bought it so the wife can watch tv while I chill in it but every time I say I’m going on it she says it’s cool you can just play the PS5. 😂
Love the way it connects straight away to my Pulse Elite headphones and the internet speed is cool even at very low speeds of 5-15mb daily until I have at present until I get my 500mb connection next week.
Overall for myself it’s a great investment for a handheld in a way as I have the switch oiled over hardly touched.

My PS5 is hard wired , my portal is connected to 5ghz , ping, jitter and latency of my network is all very low on my 1gig home service. None of that matters in my case. PS remote play has always been laggy. I've used Xbox game streaming all on the same network and away from my home and it is miles better. I will say this. Everyone just wants OLED for the sake of it being OLED. Sure it's a better display but your average consumer won't know what they're missing by having a regular LCD screen on a portable display.
LED displays are also just LCD screens. If you meant having a FALD display for a handheld, that would be ridiculous. Having a premium display on something handheld is such a waste.
The original Switch and Steam Deck both have non OLED displays and neither of them are lacking.
