    • Playstation Portal - A...
    The Playstation Portal has been out for almost 4 months now, I've used it pretty much every day since its release. It's a simple remote play handheld at heart but it's not without its problems: There are many reports of micro stutters, frame drops and people suffering with huge amounts of lag. There is no web browser on the Portal meaning you can't us public WiFi and there is no bluetooth audio either.
    So what does the PS Portal get right? Well, for me, it's all about convenience, especially for casual gaming. If your home network is configured well and you PS5 is hardwired into your router, then you should have an equally great experience with no connection drops and no drop in quality. It's a pick up and play device which is a game changer for us gaming dads and gaming parents. It means you can be playing your favourite PS5 games whilst the kids are watching the TV, it's fantastic!
    Basically, this video is all about how I feel about the Portal after almost 4 months.

We’re fortunate enough to have a strong mesh WiFi set up at home and the PS5 is wired so it’s a best use case scenario but I’ve experienced no issues whatsoever using my portal and it has become my main way to enjoy my PS5 library.

    just got mine. something I've seen nobody mention is how it seems to settle with time.
    when I first set it up, the text looked really low res. However as time went on it just looked better. same with the games, once it settled, they looked as good as anyone could hope, for a handheld device in 2024. The big test for me next week, is whether it works away from home using my 4g mobile router. If it does, great, otherwise I'm just going to buy a digital only PS5 to keep in my lorry. thanks for all the info/tips, great channel, subbed.

    • @TheGameFatherUK
      @TheGameFatherUK  Před 3 měsíci +1

      Appreciate that my friend! I'm fairly sure that the settling in is down to the router figuring out how and if to prioritise the traffic on the network. Almost certainly true if you have any kind of QoS on the router that operates on the LAN. The same happens when my Portal is trying to figure out which MESH node has the strongest signal.

      The thing that worries me the most (aside from my obvious failing eyesight) is that Sony MUST know about it by now. Well, it's been a over month since I bought mine. Usually the wifi connection never feels nor looks right when it comes to PS Portal--I always have it lags and stutters and blurry shit. So much so that I've been thinking heavily to just sell it and accept my losses. Suddenly, after about over a week I left it neglected, last night I tried to play and it held on so strong for hours on end. Perfect dreamy gameplay sessions that I've never gotten before from the device. This morning I tried again, and it held on strong, still. It's not just a fluke it's so awesome!

The experience was not as smooth as the other day when I played in the living room, directly below the router, but it wasn’t also as bad as it used to be. It stuttered every 15 minutes or so, but not as severe. The picture stayed sharp, not blurry crap.

      Yes it does, but it's very much dependant on the quality of the network on both ends. If your home setup is solid (stable internet, well configured) then that just leaves the connection away from home. Some WiFi will be locked behind a login (like at hotels) which makes connecting tricky. Mobile hotspot works well in good 4G and 5G areas, but again, it needs to be solid.
      The best advice I can possibly give you is to setup the free app on a mobile device, tablet or laptop and try it in the places you'd imagine yourself using a Portal. If it works great in those places, the Portal should too :)

    Are these speeds ok? I genuinely never understood what upload speeds and ping meant but my WiFi ping is 24ms, download is 575.5 mbps and upload is 166 mbps. Would that work?

    • @TheGameFatherUK
      @TheGameFatherUK  Před 2 měsíci +1

      That's more than enough download and upload, the ping isn't bad but you want to check for stability as well as a low number. If your pings are reliably around that 24ms it should be fine. But really, the best test would be to run the free remote play app on a phone, tablet or computer. Then you'll get a very good idea of how well the Portal will work :)

    • @TheGameFatherUK
      @TheGameFatherUK  Před 3 měsíci

      It needs very little in terms of throughput, 15Mbps is more than enough, it really doesn't need much at all. What it does need though, and where a lot of networks fall down, is low latency, low interference and stability. Those are also a bit more difficult to measure, but if you have an Android mobile device, you can download a free app called WiFiMan which can be very useful for testing those things.

    This video pretty much helps to validate my reasoning behind why I thought the portal would be a good product. For parents and people who want to play their games when they're not able to sit in the same room as their PS5, this is amazing. I know there are alternate ways of doing remote play, but this is the most convenient. All the people who were calling it pointless because you could play remotely on your phone or tablet missed the point of how inconvenient that is, and just how often it occurs that you will be unable to sit down in front of your PS5 to play. It's a niche thing, but it is still a pretty big niche that a lot of people fall into. No one thought that it would be perfect or a game changer, but it does fill a very large and specific need and having a device that doesn't require taking over your phone, or setting up a tablet and a controller to play is great.

    My only issue with my PS Portal right now is with the screen freezing every 20 seconds. I did read about and found a workaround. Unplugging the HDMI from the PS5. This is annoying since I would have to remember to unplugged the HDMI if I want to bring my Portal out somewhere.

    I have 2 young kids that are struggling to play the ps5 as they both constantly want different games so i got a second one today. One is my eldest boys present and the second is just a family console that my youngest can play astrobots on to his hearts content. Along with this i got the portal... this is for myself to use when theyre asleep, watching telly or i have a few minutes spare to be by myself.. its originally what the switch was meant to be but they just didnt bring out enough quality games for me so the portal is the perfect hand held device. I wont be taking it out. Its purely for the home where i can just pick it up, race for a bit or play tekkan and not have to hide myself away in the spare room OR take over the tv in the livingroom. I can be play but still be present.

    Ehh… honestly it turned out to just look cool for me. I pawned mines bcuz the pawnshop had a Steam deck for 220. I pawned it JUST in case my kid wants it later. Realistically the limitations make it more of a liability. The screen is a LITTLE too wide. If it were a bit shorter it could be more comfortable. Sony went thru so much effort to lock it down that it’s really limited to a controller with a screen. Kinda like the Wii U. It’s battery life was extremely limiting. Sony of course wins the looks and style, but Gcloud and every other handheld seem to be better for actually using it as a handheld option. But just my opinion tho

    I finally got my hands on a PlayStation Portal a couple of days ago, and I really really like it a lot. The main reason I got this PS Portal was so that I had something to do when I'm out and about. At work, I'm always sitting in my car waiting on trucks to arrive at the warehouse. But I just got sick to my stomach when you said it works great with the Samsung S23.
    I have the Samsung S22 Ultra, and every time I try to use the Hotspot on my phone, my game comes in looking really horrible, and lags real bad, and then it kicks me out.
    What about my Dodge Challenger Hotspot. I haven't paid for it yet. But I thought about paying for a Hotspot plan for my car. But I wonder if it will work well for me to play on the PS Portal using my cars Hotspot. 🤔
    Do you think I should call up the phone company to see why my Samsung S22 Ultra Hotspot is horrible, or is it like that because of it being the S22??
    I don't know a whole bunch about internet stuff. But this is the whole main reason why I bought my PlayStation Portal in the first place.
    I really hope I can figure it out soon.
    Because here at home I rather play my PlayStation 5 on my 55" LG OLED, C1 Series. Don't care a whole lot about taking it into the bathroom with me 😂😂
    Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr, what do I do to accomplish my goal for playing this away from home. Smh

    • @TheGameFatherUK
      @TheGameFatherUK  Před 2 měsíci +2

      Hah, taking it into the bathroom is definitely not for me either 😅
      The reason I specifically mentioned the Galaxy Ultra S23 is because it's one of the phones that will share a WiFi signal in hotspot mode, rather than forcing you onto mobile data. So if you're using mobile data anyway, the S22 will be no different (I also wouldn't be surprised if the 22 did support WiFi sharing though).
      Your phone isn't like to be the cause of your issue. It's more likely going to be the quality/stability of the mobile data signal or your internet connection at home and how your network is configured.
      There are a lot of variables with mobile data, so the first thing I'd do to narrow it down (if you can) is to take the Portal to some friends and families houses and test it on their WiFi. If it works great, it's most likely something to do with the hotspot. If it's terrible everywhere, it's more likely to be your home network config.

Part of me wonders if you don't see the stutter because you are in the UK somehow... this is silly but I'm not sure people from UK/EU ever complain about the stutter. Is there logic behind this? I can't say... it would imply that UK/EU consoles stream out differently, or UK/EU Portals have different screen refresh... which both feel extremely unlikely. But I know historically hz standards were different between world regions. Perhaps I'm simply wrong and UK/EU users are totally seeing it as well, and it simply comes down to the games you are playing and how you are playing them. (Play Sackboy it is the BEST test for the stutter.)
