It's been over 6 months since the PS portal came out and If there's one thing to take away from my time with it its this: After using the PlayStation portal for a long period of time. I can say I was VERY wrong with my initial opinions.
#ps5 #playstation #streaming
keywords and phrases (ignore this): Backbone vs ps portal, playstation portal long term review, is the ps portal worth it? should i buy a ps portal? - Hry
UPDATE: It looks like in the next day or so, the PlayStation Portal will receive an update to allow for public WiFi sign in.
Do you think the portal is worth buying?
YESS
For me I think just being in the house is what I want. I don't really need to travel and play. But nice to know I can use it from a hotel.
Probably going to be picking one up. I like being able to grind thru games while having something on tv in the background. My only fear is I may never sleep again.
I think the portal is great for around the house, I've not got one yet but will do then the price drops.
Very nicke
The new portal update lets you sign into any WiFi away from home
This comment is underrated. literally the only thing I was looking to know.. thank you
@@Spideylee23be careful. It only connects to 2.4 ghz public networks. Which is essentially 1%. Assume it won’t work on public WiFi.
@@jubez1875 im gonna cop 1 soon today qnd see how it works at work . Lol they have great wifi and I have good hot spot if need be but I appreciate the warning
I'll let u know how it went
Fellow dad gamer here, thinking of installing the Ps5 into our van and use the portal to play it whilst on the road. Got a WiFi router installed already so seems a great fit. Thanks for the updated review
that is like perfect setup for it
I’ve had the portal since first week launch. I normally just play casual games on it when I’m in bed or on the couch with CZcams playing in the background. I’ve tried cod on it and it’s not my preferred way to play multiplayer type games. I do like it but my biggest gripe is the smaller thumb sticks. It’s not a crazy difference but it’s noticeable when you’re gaming
For me it's getting used to the wider spacing between my hands. I didn't think that would take so much getting used to.
@@potentatewags yeah probably cause were just so use to a normal controller. But i get that too, esp when it comes to shooter style games
Nice vid! It sounds like it has a few short-comings that the switch also had on release (like lacking bluetooth to headphones). I'm curious to see how both Nintendo and Sony improve the product even further with possible next generation versions
Its got a solid foundation, just needs a few updates and id have no complaints! Thanks for watching :)
i LOVE it because when i’m sad i can put sport/movies on my main tv and use it to play my games. 10/10 distraction right there, priceless
Are any Sony Bluetooth headphones good with this? Or just the pulse ear buds? I’ve heard a few different answers.
I did not know the portal was a thing till now! Awesome vid!
Bruh then you live under a rock
@@user-hl4pz6eb8h I do, a comfortable Boulder
I still want the ability to stream PS Plus to the Portal directly. Even without a console. I'd buy it it a heartbeat if we coukd.
It’s not possible
If I could use this as a backup PS5 controller, I might be able to justify it... but as just a streaming device, I'll stick with the Deck and Chiaki4Deck, and just stop/start the stream when it starts acting up
For me the Portal is amazing and above all a lag free experience up till now. I travel for work a lot trough Europe and went to 12 different countries and 18 different hotels since December and could game like i was home. I do have to say those where nice hotels with good wifi.
What’s your job bro? I need to be doing that.

This is a really specific question. But does anyone know:
If you unlock a trophy while using the portal, does the clip still save on your console, or does it just register the trophy on your account?
Thanks friends :)
Great review Thank you.
Thanks for watching!
Lmao I thought the ads I saw for this were fake or a drop shipping scam. Great video!!
I love my portal. But these speakers are super loud. Even on setting 1. So I found out you can use an RF adapter. That’s what I use and use some Bose earbuds.
What rf adapter do you use
It’s not perfect but I love the viability of it. With the updates, especially, I can go onto any WiFi network at a hotel or whatever and I can connect to my console. I’m surprised that with a good connection, I can play my ps5 anywhere! But it’s also nice to be able to play it on my bed haha.
Backbone is there if you want to save money, but portal provides much better experience. Bigger screen, no need to assemble, won't interrupt game if I need to answer a call or use phone to check a game guide.
I got my Portal on day one release, and I'm still using it and love it.
I am thinking about getting a portal. If I'm away from home for like 3-4 days, and I can't take the PS5. So I do i leave the PS5 on or on rest mode for the whole time that I'm away?
Yup, it turns your ps5 on while you’re playing. But when you’re done you can just put your ps5 in rest mode from the portal the same way you would if you were home
@Idksomethinginsane it's just annoying that I have to leave my PS5 on or on rest mode all day, until I'm ready to play. The PS5 doesnt have an automatic turn off and cannot be turned on remotely.
@@jacquesm1553 if you leave it in rest mode and and enable the other settings it’ll basically live in rest mode. And only turn on when your playing and when your done playing it’ll go back to rest mode. I just got mine yesterday
@@Idksomethinginsanewhy can’t I get mine to connect to my ps5 when it’s in rest mode. Only when it’s turned on
@@KinglaQwueefayou have to go on your ps5 and go into settings then scroll down to remote play. Click that and enable the settings in that section. Once you do that you should be able to. Also I just thought about this. Are you under the impression that the portal streams from the ps5 while it’s in rest mode. But the ps5 actually turns fully on to let you stream content. Then goes back into rest mode when you disconnect the portal. (As long as you have the proper settings)
I don't think it is I legit returned one yesterday
Fair enough. What was the main deal breaker for you?
@@DigitalCynics I can honestly say in home it's amazing, but the deal breaker for me is you're never really truly guaranteed a good gaming experience away from home.
Very fair point
I too was wrong about it. I only play PS5 on my Portal now. Great for when I'm out of the house too, even with my hotspot.
I’ve wanted one but I don’t have the best internet, would be nice to have while I’m in the living room or at a buddies, I wanted new PSP was concerned when this was only remote play when announced because I got bad internet, but was tempted because I have a switch and love it but certain games are on Xbox and PlayStation so been 50/50
My man the update is out
Any time I try to do anything with remote play it never plays smooth. Even chiaki has lag. I couldn't even play a turned based rpg with remote play. We need an actual new psp
Got the portal but not able to get portal to connect to ps5 using mobile hotspot iPhone on EE network in the UK. WiFi is ok but the reason I’ve got it is so I can play in work. Hopefully my issue gets resolved
Yes it’s an apple/ee problem they have been working to fix it.
@@user-yq5cz5re8dAre they in the works on fixing this issue at the moment if it seems to be an EE issue.
@@user-yq5cz5re8d Should I get in touch with EE and apple see what’s the progress to solving the problems
Yeah I've heard of certain providers somehow having issues, such as T Mobile in the US.
My internet provider fixed mine by fixing my IP and open the ports required on the router.
@digitalcynics you nailed it. For dad gamers, or someone who is willing to share the TV. The portal is totally worth it. Great video
I have a steam deck oled where a lot of my ps games are on there! Hard to justify to get ps portal when it requires internet!
And a wonderful two hundred dollar headbuds from playstation are awesome.... Being able to play music in the background with With the game sound..... Pure Gold
Should have waited a few more days to do this revisit review with the new update. Not 100% what we wanted but Id say 90%. BTW Rogers in Canada 5G tether is almost flawless. I play every day tethered while at work. Not to say there are bad experiences but I would say its almost all positive.
No kidding. Thank goodness for pinned comments lol
I've had 2 in 48 hours, returned the first, bought another. Tempted to return, can't get it to play away from home.
Apparently can use mobile hotspot to get to home network to play?
But I can't get it working
Get a dualshock 5 game clip for your android/iphone and call it a day.
I think you wer right. Remote play is too laggy. I have brilliant internet and its still too laggy. And only gets worse if someones on the internet or playing and online game.
Cap
Cap?
Your speed isnt the issue the wifi itself is. Wifi 6 and 5ghz band is needed
I can not believe it people compare that thing to Playstation portal, 😅😅😅
I think it would be cool if it could stream ps+ games on it.
They should allow it to work with a PS4
The GCloud is simply a better device it has the ability to run the official PlayStation remote play app what’s gonna remote play PlayStation 4 and 5 Xbox cloud gaming, and steam link. Also, it has the ability to do all media consumption. It has built-in controls and emulation up to some PlayStation 2 and all PSP 🤷🏾♂️ comfortably.
Or for about 40 to 50 dollars cheaper than the PS portal you can go with a retroid pocket 3+. Emulate up to Gamecube and stream PS 4 and 5 games as well as xcloud and steam link since it just runs android with a skin in top. Or just save some extra money and get a base steam deck which can emulate up to Xbox 360 and switch, local gaming, ps4 & 5 streaming, Xcloud and steam link. Plus contains a full desktop computer environment
I have the Portal, the Deck and a gaming phone. The Portal is the best option to play your PS five remotely and in my opinion the next best thing is AR glasses and whichever controller you prefer. You get a big screen and unmatched comfort.
I've been using my portal for a few months now and still love it. I only play it at home though.
Another pro for using it over the backbone or any phone is that anytime you navigate away from the remote play app on the backbone, to check a text for instance, you're disconnected and have to reconnect again.
One thing I wish Sony would add is some type of night mode or warm screen filter. The blue light can be a bit much when playing at night even in the dimmest setting
The Portal is a CONTROLLER!!!!
Name a controller with BLUE TOOTH capability....
The Portal is not meant for gaming on the go and is for exactly the situations you mentioned in this video. I wouldn't recommend using the Steamdeck outside of the home because of it's battery life and the fact that it too is fragile. AR glasses and a controller of one's choice is the way to play on the go.
Cool vid though!
Keep up the good work. 👍
Not true verizon hotspot for ten dollars on the phone is gold. I don't know who's your provider. But it's wonderful over here with verizon. At least in washington state😊😊😊😊😊😊
I bought my PS Portal because I don’t like to play games on my phone plus is going to kill my battery…. Love my portal ❤
Never touch my ps5 ever since got the portal...thts how much i love
how about play fortnite into the portal any good?
I love it!
Bro didn’t even mention battery life lol
It's decent. On the portal, on average I'm getting around 4-5 hours with mid-high brightness.
Nice 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
What’s your gamer tag on PlayStation handsome 😊
I'll never understand people who kill there cell phones life for backbone
The battery life? Streaming with ps remote is like streaming a CZcams video. Doesn’t use that much battery. Or buy a battery pack if you’re that scared of using your phone. Carrying around an entire second device makes less sense to me.
@@lilstogie that's a fkn lie lol
@@themoviefan9990 you clearly don’t own one so why act like you’d know lol maybe you just need a new phone
@lilstogie lol is that you backbone?
@@themoviefan9990 cute but not relevant.
better off getting a backbone controller and using remote play on your phone tbh
Get a hotspot device
Please & I repeat don’t buy the portal. It’s not worth it. The back bone is way better to get
Trippin
Just say u can’t buy it 😂😂😂
Lol nobody should be buying the backbone . If you can afford a deck get that if you can't then maybe portal but surely no backbone shit .
the only people that shouldn’t buy it are broke. everyone else should because the more they sell they’ll give us better updates just like they did the other day 😌
@@georgiatopley7516 not really it's just 200 quids , even gypsies can afford that lol .
Feels like my portal got worse on the new update shit jst keeps disconnecting completely freezing up i have to restart the portal every time happened 2 times i havnt touched it since 😂😂😂😂😂
