Top Gear is part of it. James May and Jeremy Clarkson always joked that the Countach handled like a truck.
couple of asshats tbh.
Same reason people kept telling you your Ford GT had an immobilizer problem. Top Gear is fake news
Ha, my name calling on May and Clarkson got moderated. Let's try again: Those 2 are a couple of blowhards in my humble opinion. I can't stand them.
lol I keep getting moderated for criticizing Top Gear. 3rd try: I also do not give credence to opinions, or even "facts" for that matter, stated on Top Gear.
@@roywhiteo5 I love the trio. They are automotive legends, but their opinions on supercars that are hard to drive, are almost always wrong.

That Countach is a thing of beauty - a real work of art. And Doug’s explanation of all the misconceptions about it is really enlightening. Speed is really overrated in this age of EVs, whereas the experience of driving an ageless classic is definitely not.
Watch the movie It Takes Two about this car in the 80s
@@tnickknightJust so everyone know but he is referring to a 1998 comedy film that featured a Lamborghini Countach (or more specifically a replica Countach as a central part of the plot (the original title of the film was going to be “My New Car”. Don’t confuse that film with the Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen children’s film “It Takes Two” from 1995 or the earlier Hong Kong comedy film from 1982.
@@Charlesb88 Thanks, very true. I noted it, because the way they described the car, was so funny!,. It so matches the time and thought of this car. A perfect time capsule
You literally just reiterated what Doug said. This feels like an AI summary.
it's ugly like every other lambo
James May reviewed the Lamborghini Countach LP400S comparing it to the Ferrari Boxer. Despite praising its styling and madness, he was appalled by how difficult it was to drive. Id say thats where a lot of these opinions started.
Yeah, and that was filmed back in 2002/2003. So they would be comparing it to a manual Murcielago or 575 Maranello. Which are already fairly raw cars. I am sure James had a tonne of nostalgia for the Countash. But cars nowadays are way more numb. So the theatre of the Countach probably elevates it a lot more now compared to 20 years ago. Back then it was just a simple old used Lambo.
Countach LP400S has a nimble handling like Lotus Elise 111R.
@@purwantiallan5089 yeah Countash is only 1300kgs. So essentially the same as a Porsche Cayman. And they are plenty nimble.
@@ForgetfulFoot TIL that not being obnoxiusly loud, uncomfortable, prone to breaking down and not making you look like a moron crawling out = numb.
@@johndoe-jg7he I said cars today are numb. Not the Countash.....
It probably comes from that one Top Gear segment where it's about never meeting your heroes and the Countach was prominently featured it in it :).
Did Clarkson ever say something nice about anything that wasn't British? Not too often..
Clarkson rightly trashed a lot of British cars too. It’s not serious though, he’s a buffoon playing for entertainment.

If I could, I'd swap cars every year to have more experiences. Is that wrong?
Doug hit the nail on the head with this video. Same feelings I had about my ‘17 F-Type R. It’s not the most comfortable, it’s not the fastest, it’s not the best handling. But no other modern car better grasps that gentlemanly British embrouchure with such flowing lines and dramatic exhaust note. And that’s why I’m in love with it. Every time I get in is an experience.
I used to want a XKR, but now I think I wouldn't mind helping the 5.0 XK.
I own a Firesand Orange 2014 F-Type S convertible, and I feel the EXACT same way. I'm driving a work of art, that is engaging, loud, and thrilling. It's an absolute dream and passion, and WAY more valuable to me than speed.
I love that Doug hasn't discovered note cards or an iPad...and instead hold his laptop in one hand because his thoughts are that detailed.
Doug is the type of guy to NOT take his Countach to the grocery store...but he might swing by the Home Depot.
He put a bloody tv on his Ferrari 360. Surprised it doesnt have a roof rack yet :D
Doug will not take off at the light in his Lamborghini countach
@@mercator79it also ever put in Ford Mustang 1968.
He straps sheets of plywood to the wing
Another point to the drivability of it, I think people who have driven it and say it drives like a truck possibly haven’t driven it when it’s fully up to temp and stuff. Matt Farah talked about it, saying that’s why you can’t just get in and take it for a short drive, it takes like 30 or 40 minutes for everything to be operational. The bushings and cats and engine and transmission and diff and everything take so much longer than a normal car to get up to temperature and work correctly
Im sorry but if a car takes 40 minutes to be "good" then it doesnt sound like a good car in the first place.
I agree. You are sorry. Sorry, not sorry@@kamahlrg
Why does it take so long?
That 40 minutes also sounds like how long it takes for the driver to just “get used to it” and stop complaining. Doesn’t mean it objectively gets better.
Sounds like me taking the dogs out for a walk!
Doug is the type of guy to make a video about how he loves driving his Countach, but not drive it in the video.

Doug is the type of guy to ask people what their quirks and features are when interviewing someone to work at cars and bids
If only I was able to have purchased one when they were cheaper. This WAS this poster car for me and many many Gen X’rs. Doug isn’t old enough to remember this love of the Countach but good on him for appreciating it and being in a position to preserve one. I was able to own a few of my dream cars but the Countach is simply unreachable now.
same man, same. I own my realistic dream car (an 03 mustang "terminator" cobra) but my lambo countach and ferrari f40-50 dreams will remain dreams forever
The maintenance was always expensive though...
If you just would like to own one for some time then sure
If only I had money or credit back in the 90's. It's been so frustrating that the Countach has always been just out of reach no matter what.
@@tbasmwmc same but remember… when you buy a super car, you’re really buying 2
The one you buy, and the one you’ll buy through crazy expensive maintenance
My father had a QV which he swapped for an Anniversary and finally a Diablo SV. Without the power steering, the early cars were hard work especially at low speeds, hence the truck comments. A/C is also rubbish, which limits how far you can comfortably travel in the car. And do close the door to hard as window will shatter as I found out. The hard way. Diablo is a lot more resolved and just as much theatre...
Doug is the type of guy that can make a school bus from 1950 interesting. 😅 Love his videos
Doug - you have hit it right on the head. I have been fortunate to own several Countach’’s over the past 30 years, including a Periscopa, a downdraft 88 1/2, and two Anniversaries (as well as a Miura S, Espadas, Jarama, Diablos, and a Urracco - among other vintage Italians - not all at once!). And I have driven most of these for thousands of miles. It IS about the experiences that you have with them. They are works of art, but you must drive them to get the full experience. They are not fast at all by today’s standards. Electric cars have won that game, no question, but that’s not the point. The driver engagement required in driving these is exciting, to say the least. To your own heritage - they have many, many “quirks and features”. The Countach always generates a conversation, for example, when you stop to get gas. Think about it - it was a phenomenon when it was introduced in 1974. I strongly believe if the Countach, just as it was presented in 1974, were introduced TODAY, it would be viewed as a phenomenon. And…I love the Lamborghini origin story - it may just be a myth - but successful tractor maker Ferruccio telling Enzo that the clutch in his car was crap and Enzo throwing him out of his office and Ferruccio responding by building his own car. Ya gotta love it. The other thing is that Lamborghini cars were never fully developed - always put cars into production too soon, always near to or in bankruptcy - so there is some fettling, at the very least, typically that needs to be done if the car has not been thoroughly gone through. Finally, George Evans is “the man” on these cars -well done, Doug in having him get your car in shipshape. Enjoy it!
Best comment yet. So much of this channel is polluted by a few hundred morons attempting to be relevant and humorous and failing at both.
This is exactly how I feel driving late 60s and early 70s muscle cars with big carbureted engines, heavy clutches, and thundering exhausts. There's something about the raw experience that newer performance cars cannot replace.
I get that. Dumping so much unburned gas out of the tailpipes that the guy behind you is just choking. Back in the day.
Glad you are enjoying it Doug! You are "living the dream" for a lot of aging car nerds out here in CZcamsland so keep doing it with your characteristic joie de vivre.👍
You make an excellent point. If you have never driven one, much less owned one, your opinion about the experience doesn’t really count for much. I would imagine that driving around in anything with a gated manual is an enjoyable experience for a true car person.
The problem with rare cars is so few people have driven them, and if someone drives a rare car that isn’t in excellent mechanical condition it will make a big difference in what they think about it. My father owned a 1978 and 1984 Countach, and they both were excellent drivers cars. The gated shifter and the clutch are somewhat heavy, but it’s in a mechanical and accurate way that is so enjoyable that you won’t care if you’re a car nut. If you’re the type of person who thinks cars are solely for transportation, or worse a rolling office like a Tesla, you’ll never appreciate a true sports car. The handling is excellent, and like all Lamborghini’s, the faster you go the better it drives. I’m 5’8” and weight 160lbs. and I fit inside of it fine. My father is a master automotive mechanic, so maintaining the Countach was easy for him. We lived in Arizona so rust wasn’t an issue. The biggest problem owning the car was other people aggressively getting near you to take pictures while you were driving, or people following you home. I had several close calls where I got followed home at night by cars with blacked out windows, and I just drove past my street and drove to the police station, at which point whoever was following me took off.

Ive obviously never driven either but based on everything i have ever seen in reviews, hearing that "the Countach drives at least as good as an F40" kind of caught me wayyy off guard.
Hard to believe that. Doug doesnt do objective tests like 0-60, braking distances, track times, etc. Driving fast on the street isnt the same, i dont believe he drove somebody else's F40 to its limits.
@@kamahlrg he also didnt drive countach to its limits, i dont think anyone ever had so it is kinda pointless to talk about vehicle theoretical limit that no one ever saw
@@cyjanek7818 that doesnt make any sense. You realize he owns the Countach, right? His opinion isnt based on just this video but months of ownership. Just because you dont see him driving it hard here doesnt mean he never has, definately harder than a $3 million car he doesnt own.
If you think no one has ever driven one to its limits i imagine you dont watch/read that much about cars.
So basically this video is saying most of what people say to him is true. However it's still worth it because of the experience which is probably true.
There isn't a single serious car journalist who agrees with Doug on this one. The difference is, Doug doesn't get a chance to drive on a track. Also Doug seems to be the only one saying F40 has bad brakes. Chris Harris even said the brakes are good when he tested it on a same day with the F50.
This Countach really needs several rear and side facing cameras and all the complaints about blind spots would go away. That wing is a perfect place for two cameras, one on each side. And one centered, center of the rear bumper. Each mirror staulk can house a mirror and, hell with it, you might as well add a front facing mirror to add a complete recordable package to protect the car and the owner from liability for others actions. This is not expensive today and it instantly lowers the cost of insuring the car. I would love to own this car. It is a legend. With all the supercar problems that go with that. I would defintely fit the cameras on this car. Doug could inspire a great company, willing to sponsor that, to showcase the work they do, to hide those cameras all over the car. Great car.
Putting a screen in Countach is like adding a fake moustache to the Mona Lisa
@@--SPQR-- She wouldn't even wear her God-given eyebrows so good luck with that one.
Auto journalists in the '80s said the ergonomics are atrocious, the clutch pedal is ridiculously heavy, and the fit and finish were terrible. Maybe the people who approach Doug with the shade read Car and Driver and Road & Track back in the day?
So, what makes the Countach fun to drive (sound and attention) is the same thesis that applies to an econo box with a straight pipe, custom rims and lower suspension?
All true. But you might get attention from a different group of people. Fun is like beauty, it's relative.

Doug I would love it if reviewers would review cars based on what they were designed to do . I mean yes you could put 205-70- r17 tires on a S2000 and it would get a better driver comfort score but what is the point of . Also the way most cars are geared, one should evaluate the performance and power of a engine based on the last 3000revs before redline. The fact that a car engine that was not designed to deliver a lot of power at low rpm's should only be a factor if your driving a pickup truck that's going to used to yank stumps out of the ground right!
Like you say , this car is great for what it was designed to do nothing more or less .

That, my friend, is a 1st world problem.
I was trained by a professional race car driver and HE said it was both his worst and favorite thing to drive. I've only driven one one, back when they used to rent them on Rodeo Dr. The brakes are hard and with no power steering and the shift gates are hard to do if not used to them. But you're correct, it's an experience.
I can totally relate...I had a 70 charger rt, 440 with a 4 speed, and used to drive it daily. You don't have to go fast to enjoy the experience. Nothing beats the sound and feel of an older classic or exotic
I wish I could be excited about anything as much as Doug is about his Countach.
And THIS IS…. My 2021 Toyota Corolla LE (white color), made in Japan. I love it. 😁
Thanks Doug for giving the Countach the praise it’s always deserved - iconic and legendary. Well said comparing speed to experience.
I have noticed the more experience and proper seat time an enthusiast has in different special cars, fast, slow. You start to drive these cars for what they actually are and the period from which they come. The overall experience supercedes outright speed to the true automotive connoisseur in my humble opinion. Having an interaction with a car that has depth tends to stick in your memory and in your soul. Having said that I do love feeling a car stick you hard in the seat and no let go. A mix of these things is how I gauge a performance car. My garage is 96 Viper/97 F355. For my current budget those are my choices and I enjoy everyday having them to drive.
Very clever way of flipping pre owned cars through videos
I have had mine for 2 years and it is amazing to drive! It takes some getting used ot but once you get used to it, it is a blast to drive!

Great points, especially the experience you get from the car. I've driven plenty of cramped cars as well and as long as I can get my legs below the steering wheel I can drive it, what a shame about the current Mazda MX5, I couldn't get my legs below the steering wheel so I didn't bother to drive it, let alone buy it.

It's an exciting design - it's the definition of a wedge sportscar - this is the one. If you see the 1st contach(es) it's the pure distillation of this work of art. The upgrades after, putting spoilers, side thingies what ever - its a sin to the beautiful pure original design. You can see it from the OG 1973 concept and 74 models.
