This is probably THE test of 2021 - the Tesla Model Y has finally arrived in the UK and it doesn't fail to impress. Trouble is, in the two years it's taken to arrive, the market has swelled with plenty of excellent electric crossovers. Two of which are the fantastic Hyundai Ioniq 5 and the Kia EV6 - both are sister cars and both are two of 2021's most exciting new EVs.
So, which one would we choose? Ginny, Nicki and Tom find out.

I saw the Tesla at the Fully Charged show and thought it was the ideal car for me - then I looked at the price. I test drove the Ioniq 5 (as well as the ID 4 and the Citroen EC4) and fell for it. The EV6 gives an intelligent nod to people who love cars as we have known them for the past few decades. They (we) need to be drawn into the EV market and a Tesla with the look and feel of some of its exterior and most of its interior (and high price) just won't do it.

Hold on hold on..something you failed to mention: the EV6 GT-Line is £10k cheaper than the Model Y (which has no cheaper option in the UK). Many people would be happy with that mid spec car as it still comes with a lot of tech. In which case that must surely swing the balance towards the EV6.

    • @sokoo1978
      @sokoo1978 Před 2 lety +20

You can have a cheaper EV6, but in fact if you look at the trims, you don't really want. I'm hesitating between the two and with the configuration I like (GT line full extra) the price difference is dimnishing while Tesla has still many advantages against it like the better efficiency, the much, I mean MUCH bigger trunk and frunk (the 4wd EV6 frunks size is a joke), the light years better software and the SC network. There are few points towards EV6, like for me it looks way better and cooler, and the insurance is much cheaper. But in the other hand KIA requires ridiculous service intervals, while Tesla does not requires any, and it also holds it's value very well. So the total cost of ownership on long term might be even better for Tesla.

This year the Supercharger network is not as important, for our long journeys, as faster rapids are available and hubs are coming along nicely. With that one change and the emergence of competition from Kia and Hyundai it was an easy decision to go for something else. We settled on the Ioniq 5 with the Ev6 a close call. As it turns out the Y would have been to expensive and we have no regrets. Viewing it as competition is a mistake. Tesla's mission is to accelerate the worlds transition to sustainable energy. This is why they have open sourced all their patents.
Rapid innovation and the output of a quality product is one area where Tesla continues to differentiates itself.
Unfortunately, for other automakers, they are too far ahead and have reached economies of scale.
2021-2023 will be this last gasp for a lot of automakers, as the gov steps in and attempts to help them thrive. But they just won't be able to make money. In fact, ford and others are losing about 10,000 per EV sale right now, while Tesla boasts a ridiculous gross margin.

Legacy car manufacturers know how to build cars, and now they no longer have to invest in developing drivetrains and emissions and stuff. It will make them much more competitive in general and able to focus on more important things.
Tesla's appeal is rapidly decreasing as they lose their monopoly in the ev market. Not to mention that they still look like they where launched 2008. Which i guess they technically where.
But i do agree with you in a sense. Once self driving cars become a thing the car industry days are numbered and only a handful of fleetcar builders will remain.
Cheap taxi's will flood the market and be available 24/7 everywhere. People will simply have a subscription for 1000 miles a month for 89.99. Just like the mentioned cell phones.

I have test driven both the Ioniq 5 and the EV6, as well as a couple of Skoda Enyaqs in the last few days, and think I'll be going for the Ioniq 5 with AWD. I didn't try a Model Y, as I have some reservations about the reliability, pricing, and reliance on touch screen controls. I have to admit the storage space is impressive though.
The Ioniq, as it is sold here in Norway, just comes across as the most technologically advanced car. It is sold with lots of features as standard, such as super fast charging, heating and cooling for all seats, 360 degree cameras and HUD. When I turn on the signals, the display automatically brings up a video feed showing the side of my car. I have never seen that before. Even with all this equipment, the car is still more affordable and able to be delivered earlier than the others I looked at. They are all great cars, and I'm sure I would be happy with either one, but the Ioniq seems to be the slightly better choice.

My priorities were met by the I5 and I bought one. The ride quality, interior layout, price, standard equipment, V2L HUD, and looks put the Y a distant third for me. I owned a used S previously and it spent half its life away from my drive so reliability and warranty were also important. Something overlooked but important to me. The charging network is no problem with the Ionity tie up with a 25p/kWh rate and faster to charge than the Tesla. Again not mentioned…. Range anxiety isn’t an issue in any of these when your look at average number of charges away from home for the majority of owners.
Best thing is there’s now a choice with all of them being great depending on your priorities and for me better than ICE alternatives at the price. Shame the review was at best average.

All 3 are too big for my use case though and I have an ID.3 but if I were to go for one of these it would be the EV6 or I5 - I would use the Supercharger network so rarely it's not even a consideration for me and I believe (I've no stats on this mind you) that the majority of drivers in Western Europe are similar; charging mostly at home, occasionally at public L2 chargers at supermarkets or wherever and only rarely using DC fast charging. And who could give up a HUD once you've had it?

Tesla: Poor quality control. Lots of owners finding trimming peeling off, pieces not quite aligned right, etc. Plus I'm not a fan of its design inside and out.
I5: The rear window has no visibility during bad weather. Its shape prevents dirt and rain from being blown off.
EV6: Also has the rear visibility issue though I'm guessing less so than the I5 (I haven't found many reviewers' takes on it). It also is very dark inside - I'd prefer to spend hours of driving in surroundings which lift my mood.

And I heard that most 2021 and beyond vehicles have been vastly improved. As far as interior goes, I have zero complaints. There are soft touch materials even in the 3rd row and everything is put together nicely. Some of the classic Tesla gripes are still there (like the rear head restraints squeaking when raised) but I haven’t had any other issues.
A quick note on exterior panel gaps. Aside from the uber luxurious brands of the world, no car has perfect build quality, and you will find vehicles with panel gaps inconsistencies in every brand from Acura to Volvo. The cheapest EV6 RWD is £40,945 so 10K less than you state ( I think you were in a GT-Line S RWD (49K)- so 328 miles range vs 315 for the Tesla) & for the ioniq it's £36.995 - so being pedantic the tesla at £54K (for AWD plus £1.1K for the white seats to brighten the interior) is 20-25% more - for a bigger very slightly longer range (with supercharger) AWD car. They were clearly comparing equivalent models of each car and the price and information explicitly made this clear. They obviously only had the RWD Ionic but that was made clear also as well as that they were making a comparison to the AWD version. The EV6 was the AWD GTS. However, I do agree the pricing could have been made more obvious - even with a fully loaded EV6 (£53500 for the version I am getting with Blue colour and heat pump), an equivalent Y is much more (£63690 when priced with the same sized wheels, blue colour, white interior and extended autopilot (haven't added the full self drive option as not equivalent)). They could also have given some information on stats - the Y is only 0.4s faster to 60 (4.8 vs 5.2 although tesla tends to overestimate and ev6 has been clocked at 4.8 in some reviews) and the range is only about 14 miles less. For practicality - if you need the space (and like the overly minimal interior) - the Y wins hands down, but for anyone else the ev6 is much better value (or the Ioniq if you like the looks and want the more relaxed experience). Also the Y seems more of a genuine small SUV with a high driving position, where the ev6 is a genuine crossover - slightly raided fastback. Thankfully I think a lot of EV buyers at the moment are still the type of people that do their research.

The I5 looks to me like another car slashed its front doors and creased it terribly and I can't get past that. I would have to take it to a body shop and redo the doors. I have heard the EV6 is a longer vehicle and it does look awfully big and quite a bit harder to get in to and out of. The Tesla looks better in person but just needs to warm up it appearance as it just looks cold and calculated both inside and out. It just turns me off. Most everyone Is upset that car makers are doing away with all knobs and buttons in favor a one touch screen - better for over air updates just not user friendly. Rivian has gone that way for the most part too and is a definite negative for me. Would like to see a 3 door hot hatch version soon. The legacy manufacturers are starting to close the gap on Tesla, but there is still a long way to go - and of course then there is the Tesla Supercharger network which is still a bit of a trump card. I was thinking about holding off switching car from my BMW i3 until the Model Y became available in the UK, but in the end I needed more space urgently and so chose one of those Germanic EV SUV thingies hastily developed off a compromising ICE platform. Actually I am glad I did cos day-to-day it is a really competent and well built car and I do find the Tesla styling somewhat bland - price of aerodynamic efficiency I guess. I bought a model 3 SR+ as we don’t travel long distances often, the supercharger network helps for stopping a little more often, and the £8k premium for the LR wasn’t something I could justify. Same for the Y but in a more competitive space. Superchargers are still a big factor but hopefully Gridserve/others are improving constantly (Cornwall still a bit of a black hole). The price differences here really make you stop and think how often you really need a charge on a long trip. On the base cars you’re looking at £10-15k difference and at that point they’re really in different classes. But option up the EV6/I5 to a reasonable level and its maybe more like £5-10k. Still a big jump and those cars will get you 300 miles of range which will help you bridge gaps in the charger network. If I was in the market for a more CUV/SUV I don’t think Tesla would be my first choice but would still be on my shortlist. And the supercharger network would be the only thing putting it there right now.

@@nealm1814 I do not, but that is not the point I was making. I was suggesting that to put a lot of weight on the Supercharger Network is interesting when so little charging actually takes place at public charging points. To quote an article from Transport Environment
Despite the perception that public recharging is a major barrier to the mass uptake of electric vehicles (EV), public chargers are only used for about 5% of charging events, including on-street city charging, car parks and fast charging along road corridors. The data compiled in various studies to date shows that the vast majority of EV charging happens at home or work and it is a lack of choice and availability of electric cars that is the principal barrier.
Yes I understand that for those who have to use public chargers on a daily/weekly basis that the Supercharger Network is far superior, but Gridserve are certainly improving matters, as are Shell and BP judging by recent changes to Petrol Stations near me. So to use the Superchargers as one of the key criteria for putting the Tesla ahead of the EV6/Ioniq 5, yet ignore the price, looks, warranty etc. seems to me a little subjective.

Fantastic review, thank you. My personal choice is the EV6 after test driving all of them in Canada. Tesla, has a lot of manufacturing issues at least here in North America. For some reason the materials they use and the building of the car itself are non reliable. I have driven the Kia Soul EV for the last year and it is quite remarkable, even in the harsh Canadian winters. Kudos to KIA.

How does the Kia/Hyundai assisted driving compare to Tesla’s Autopilot? Especially considering the recent switch from RADAR assisted Autopilot? Did you get to compare in that way?

Just found this test. Q question did you aktualli test the range of the cars? I've never driven a Tesla ore kia and no Hyunday. But i have tried some other brands and found the range was with my driving style (heater in winter 21° C, seat heating on) a bit short. At least 65 miles (even by 20°C outside and good weather conditions) but the bigest gap was around 160miles.
I just like to know are they accurate?

They got the order just right STRAIGHT from the video title. I do like the Ioniq styling, it looks retro & futuristic at the same time,
