I test drove the Model Y earlier this week (with the 20 inch induction rims, so a firmer ride) had absolutely no problems with ride, handling or comfort. Ordered one that evening. Shortly after the test drive i spoke to a retired couple who had test driven it 30mins before me, they said they had no problem with the ride quality either and were going to order one too! Also those rims really improve the asthetic of the Y i think! Having said that i have no real problem with the Ioniq. I think it really is subjective. One thing to note is the LFP battery in the tesla (RWD) is likely to have a significantly longer lifespan compared to the NMC battery in the Ioniq., there have been plenty of case studies done on that, LFP also better for the environment. Having said that it's important to note that as soon as you go to the long range or performance Model Y the chemistry changes over to NMC for higher energy density.... For me, i'd take lifespan, eco friendliness and safety of LFP over the modest improvement in range of NMC. Great unbiased review BTW!

Good review and comparison. As the owner of a LR Model Y since January, I obviously agree with the verdict, and I agree with all of the criticisms. The ride is stiff and the lack of an instrument cluster takes some getting used to, but everything else shines. One pedal driving on twisty back roads is amazing, long trips are stress-free (Superchargers) and the storage/practicality is unmatched. The other thing I would point out, that it seems all of the reviewers miss is how many controls you can avoid by using the voice controls. They are outstanding and once you get familiar with them it's easy to almost never use the touch screen. All of that said, I tell friends who are looking to get an EV to do lots of research and test drive all of them ... multiple times. We even rented a Model Y for a day to see if it was really right for us. Figure out what's the right car for you and your family. It might be the Tesla, or the Hyundai, or some other one. Just stop driving an ICE vehicle.

We've finally driven both.. August 2022.
Model Y - We won't be getting one a few deal breakers: Head rest causes wife to have sore head after 20m of driving, can't adjust headrest. Suspension is way too hard for our roads (B roads in UK). Wife found it much harder to get in and out of the car - banging her head on the pillar.
Ionic 5 - No deal breakers. Things we didn't like - honestly nothing. Even the boot height was great as we're coming from a Landrover D4 with tail gate.
Summary - Tesla, starting to look dated. Felt 'American' in the interior - as in a bit cheap. No other features in the car other than a USB port in the back seat. Loved the space when in the Model Y.
Ionic 5 - just did everything better practicality wise. Tesla is ahead in tech - but at sacrifice of some basic things like seat adjustment, easy access buttons for regular tasks. Feels like most of the money is going into the large tablet than the rest of the car.
So I understand though why Tesla are popular. We don't need the supercharger network - so this really puts the other value adds of a Tesla to test, and it (for us at least) feel a little behind the Ionic 5.

Depends which model. We have the ultimate and the seat adjustment (once you get it right) is programmable to the user profile. Some suggestions to improve the video:
    - Get some more B-roll that better explain what you're talking about. I think the part where you're explaining the speedometer is on the corner of the screen in the Model Y you cut to close up of going through the menus. I think showing actual speedo (plus other displays and icons on a normal dash) would give people who have not driven a Tesla before a better idea. There were a few other smaller incidences of this in the review where B-roll would have helped and there weren't any or you were about to point at something in the interior and you cut to an external shot of the car.

A fantastic, practical, detailed review. We’ve just hired a Model Y for 3 days. I think the exterior styling is brilliant on the Hyundai. Just so cool. I like the Tesla but the front looks too blobby. It’s amazing how a fake grille on the S and X improve the looks. The thing that I was simply amazed at though was the astonishing technology in the Tesla. Yes it needs at least a speedo HUD but I found I loved the single large screen and what was available on it. The cameras are brilliant and the screen clarity. I’d still prefer simple buttons for things like the glovebox but I did start to get used to accessing it on the screen after a couple of days. The slow speed ride is definitely too firm though. I agree, too much for the owners it is made for. The practical space appears to be far better in the Y. With two young boys I’d have to get the Y. I think for space, practicality and technology you’d have to be spending well over $100k for something similar. I’ll be buying one.

The EV6 is slightly smaller. Longer than the I5, shorter than the MY, though the wheelbase is opposite, longer than the MY and shorter than the I5. In height, it is lower than both. But it still offers plenty of passenger space. Cargo space is less than both, but is still adequate at 480-490 litres (comparable to many mid-size ICE SUVs).
Suspension tuning in the EV6 is specific to Australia, which is very nice. It is firmer and better controlled than the soft I5, but significantly smoother and quieter than the harsh MY.
Tech and equipment is very similar to the I5 as they share the same platform, though the EV6 rwd has a longer rated range than both at 500+ kms.
The interior is darker, sportier, and more driver oriented than both. It also manages to be quieter due to better sound insulation than the MY and better aero than I5.
One big advantage for the EV6 is warranty, which is dramatically better than the Tesla. Considering most car loans are 5 years these days, the Tesla owner could be on the hook for both payments and repairs at the same time, while the I5 and EV6 owner is covered. When you add Tesla's reputation for inconsistent build quality and reliability, and high repair costs from a monopolised service system, that warranty lapse presents a possible source hardship.
If I had to sum the cars up, the Tesla is the better "Tech Toy". It is willfully different, often only for the sake of being different, not better. They made an effort, possible by the fact it is a totally clean-sheet design and company, to really rethink every aspect of the vehicle's design, interface, and ownership leading to many significant innovations. But their focus on applying tech to every operation also has the impact of making many functions unnecessarily complex and unintuitive, or foregoing certain useful common-sense features, like a shade for the glass roof. Like the reviewer commented on the HVAC controls, or another reviewer I've seen who critcised how you have to use the touch screen to turn on the windshield wipers, an unnecessarily complex and distracting operation in poor weather conditions when the driver should be focusing on the road. Tesla fans will comment that there are a dozen other ways to turn on the wipers, but none of the options are better than a simple switch. It was designed to impress people, especially on first acquaintance. Novel, techy, distinctive, but not always better. If you like always having the newest gadget, and looking like a "tech" person, you probably won't mind the compromises, and will appreciate the different approach.
The I5 and EV6 are better as "cars". They are held back in some ways by being from legacy manufacturers (primarily in terms of software), but they also benefit from decades of experience in designing useful, competent transportation. Where the MY forces the driver to adapt to the car, the I5 and EV6 are designed to fit the way people already use cars. Basic operations have less of a learning curve. I wouldn't let my mother-in-law drive a MY without first spending some time teaching her how it works, but the EV6 I would just hand her the keys knowing it is familiar enough. They are more comfortable. They are better built (though Tesla is improving).
All three are great cars in their own way.

Have you also considered shoulder width of the back seat? This is better on the Ioniq. This is probably due to the more square shaped design and that in the Ioniq you can actually recline the seats. Your leg space is sufficient and once that is the case on both cars, then shoulder width and recline become of more added value. The Ioniq would be even more preferable if the centre console could be removed altogether or slid to the front more than it can on the more expensive models. Other than your valuation of the rear interior, your comparison on the other characteristics are recognizable and thanks for sharing!

As someone who has had an Electric Ionic for a couple of years there is a couple of things that you have missed out in this review.
    1. Unlike Tesla, The NRMA / ChargeFox and Evie charge have not looked farther than the next financial quarter and they have only install one or two chargers per install site. The NRMA hasn’t even put in electrical supply boxes that will be able to supply more charges in the future!! If an electric car takes half an hour to charge you do not want to be waiting in a que.
    2. Hyundai still have the old school service regime, to keep your car in warranty they insist you bring your car in for the same service intervals that you would take an internal combination car in for. Furthermore, every 4th service they sting you $800 to change the cooling fluid which to me is ridiculous.
    3. Why should the taxpayers foot the bill for charging networks! If Tesla can do it, the big OEM car manufacturers should be doing it as well. It should be a condition of selling electric cars in Australia.

Excellent, very fair review. I love my Model Y and will be keeping it. But you are so right about the ride quality being very firm. I never want to go back to all the buttons, knobs and switches in the Ioniq 5, and I have gotten very used to controlling the climate with voice control. I have found that once I got my settings where I wanted them, I rarely need to tinker with them, so wading through all the menus isn't a daily chore. My Tesla home charger has a terrific small connector. I have watched people struggle with the huge connectors on other electrics, that never seem to want to go in smoothly. And you neglected to mention that when you go on a road trip in a Tesla it plans all the charging stops for you. I understand that is not the case in the Ioniq 5, but I could be mistaken about that. Finally Tesla software updates are regular and I look forward to them. I have not heard much about updates in the Ioniq 5.

Thanks for the detailed comparison of these two cars, I think the Ioniq line is the closest to the Model Y among available EVs even in America. The ride in the Model Y is noticeably harder but I recently drove two different ICE cars on the same roads and found that the road was the main problem, not the suspension. Both ICEs were also harsh on those local roads. We don't have the RWD Model Y here in America so I've not experienced it. My Model Y dual motor is very quick both off the line and in the mid speed range. My personal preference in style is the minimalism of the Model Y and I find that I don't interact with the display very often while driving so I don't feel the need for an instrument cluster directly in front of me. Adjusting the climate settings can be a bit dangerous when using the display but I have come to use the voice control for all of that and it works perfectly. I do a lot of leisure travel over longer distances so the AP function is very useful for that aside from the occasional phantom braking. In the cases of PB, I just tap the accelerator and it continues along in AP. Cheers and drive safely.

I've got an Ioniq 5 since last year and contemplate replacing it with this base Model Y that just became available here in EUrope. Main considerations are the space, the tech (navigation is really bad on the Ioniq 5) and the charging network (even if some superchargers are opened up, it's still easier with a Tesla). The LFP battery also promises a longer lifetime. On the other hand, the Ioniq 5 does have really fast charging, which has worked out to very good long distance traveling, even if the networks are a bit sparse in some places (and Tesla definitely has the better options). I could probably sell the Ioniq 5 at little/no loss, and then have money left after buying the Tesla...

Btw you can still use everything available in the infotainment with a wifi hotspot. Don't need to subscribe to the LTE connectivity.

Just got a Model Y after watching your review. The supercharging network, constant software that gives owners an upgrade without additional cost, the smooth look on the exterior, I also like the minimalist specs, auto-pilot and eventually FSD (although it's costly), etc...

Ioniq 5 is great and all and I really like tbh honest over the Tesla..but how do u get one? I mean whats the use of thinking or considering something which u cant get at all..So I went with the Y

While the Ioniq i5 boasts an appealing small car design, it stands in a different league than the Model Y. It resembles the charming hatchback style reminiscent of the 90s Geo Metro. In contrast, the Model Y takes on the role of a compact SUV.

I own an Ioniq 5 SEL RWD in the US,
and I love the car. It has an excellent ride and build quality.
However, my 2022 year built didn't come with battery preconditioning.
and Tesla has that feature in all trim levels no matter what part of the world or climate region you're living in.
The navigation system of the Ioniq 5 is almost useless compared to the excellent navigation system in Tesla.
Right now, some Ioniq 5 owners feel frustrated with the battery preconditioning functionality.
The software update in Hyundai is almost unexistence compared to Tesla, which updates his vehicle more frequently.
Yes, the Ioniq 5 is a very good ev but also depends on what point of view you want to look at it from.

Being a model Y owner, I still prefer the looks of Ionic 5. But thanks to the spread out super charging network, Y was an easy choice to make. And not to mention the minimalistic design gives it a futuristic look to model Y.

I also prefer the look of the Ioniq 5. It’s sad that this pretty much comes down to the reliability of competing public charging networks - but for many buyers the Tesla network is very compelling. And it works. Consistently!

I also chose the Model Y over the Ioniq 5 even though I prefered the Hyundais design. But efficiency, price (in my case a gov. grant that the Ioniq 5 didn't qualify for), tech and interior space made me chose the Tesla

If you’re charging at their maximum speed allowed, about:
      * 18min for Ioniq 5 (240kW est)
      * 25min for Model Y RWD LFP (170kW est)

I’m looks at an EV MID WAY through 2023. I can get the Model Y for 57,788 (base) in Queensland. No Ioniq 5 available new. About 30k more for second hand one. Tech vs delivery vs range vs price. It’s a no brainer for the Tesla. FYI. Hyundai and Kia want you to service EV’ every 15,000 kms

Tesla just looks like many other cars available today, nothing special. The Ioniq 5 however is stunning, looks like nothing else on the road. For that alone its the Ioniq 5 that would get my money.

I looked at tesla and yes the tech is top notch, however the build quality let's it down. Hyundai have been building cars for years so nail the build quality. Tesla are opening up their superchargers so the ioniq 5 is capable of the charge rate taking just 18 minutes to charge from 10% to 80%. V2L capability in the Hyundai is super cool. I went for the ioniq 5 and haven't looked back, even enjoying the admiring glances from tesla drivers

That may have been an issue with US-made cars, but China-built cars are just fine. Even with the US cars, issues are minor (panel gaps etc - I know, I have one), but mechanically they are just fine, and you don't have to pay the Hyundai dealer tax to keep your warranty.

  • @mondotv4216

I think the Tesla wins just on efficiency. Efficiency will become a major consumer purchasing metric once consumers understand EVs better. The Hyundai may make up for it slightly with superior fast charging speed but there just aren’t that many ultra rapids in Australia. Even if there were the majority of charging will be at home and efficiency directly affects cost to run.

Real world tests show teslas will charge up quicker anyway due to their preconditioning and smaller pack. You will be on the road quicker in a Tesla. Not to mention being able to find a charger In the first place.
