One of the best reviews out there, and the first time anyone has given reference to the ease of getting in and out with seat height, this information is very important to older people. I’m sorry about you missing your dinner. Thanks for the personal touches.😂
Absolutely a great, honest review Gavin. It's so nice to have a reviewer that says how it is and compares apple to apples unlike most car reviewers that compare apples to oranges. I get so annoyed hearing reviewers comparing the cost of a Tesla model 3 and Y to a Kia EV6 or Ionic 5 for example, and making out that you get just as good or better value for your money when in fact it is so far from the truth as those 2 cars are so much more expensive and to get the equivalent for your money you have to purchase the top of the range which is about $111k and the lowest in the range which is also more expensive has only half of the features that the Tesla has and misses out on some pretty important features in my mind. Thanks for a great review.
Love the review and the videos! 👍🏼 Always informative. What I would love to see more of is road trip videos, cost of each charge, power usage and also overall EV charging capabilities at local motels and hotels. Would be such a great way to give shout outs to owners that support the EV community with on site charging. Lots of B rolls of the stopovers and accommodations would do wonders for the tourism industry too. Keep the content coming! 👍🏼
Great review Gavin and as you said once you drive the car more you get used to where stuff is and you can adjust the things on the screen to have quicker access. Curious if you would have said “defrost windshield” if it would have worked since that’s the term us Roman Catholics use. You missed the great opportunity to say “open butthole” for opening the charge port. Also, I almost exclusively use the cameras to backup. On occasion I check the mirrors but the cameras are so good and show so much it is all that is needed.
Also, missed opportunity to show you can use voice commands to set the windscreen wipers. The myth that you absolutely need to use the screen to adjust the wipers is so damaging to the brand. Otherwise really fun review!
Aus and Kiwis more than like would use "defrost windscreen" because that is the term in both of those countries. Similar to the UK, we would also use "boot" instead of trunk, which makes "front trunk" a bit odd for us (in general).
@@foxtrot_in_socks1589 Yes, in the video he referred to Americans as Roman Catholics. I was suggesting that he try saying "defrost windshield" since the car is designed in the US and they may have not altered the speech recognition for different English speaking countries yet.
Awesome review Gavin, and trust me I've seen them all. I really appreciate your brutal honesty. Keep up the great work and best of luck with the Austin Allegro conversion. Such a clean example of that car. It should be a lot easier to disassemble with way less stuck threaded fasteners. Have some WD40 handy though just in case.
Awesome review as always. Especially interesting to see an honest take on the learning curve which despite not super steep, does exist. It’s a great car and happy to see it making its way over there. BTW, was that a MIC version? I’ve been hearing raving comments about the great build quality coming out of Shanghai.
Viewer from Canada here. Appreciate that your take is different from North American (and European) reviewers. Frankly, I don't know much about NZ industry: do you have a native auto manufacturer? I suspect not, given the objectivity of your review. There's no [ evident ] agenda showing OEM recalcitrance influencing your opinion. I just wanted you to know that there is a core of EV enthusiasts even in countries like mine, making ICE vehicles, that *DO* support the transition and that have also reached the inevitable conclusion that there truly is no competition. Good luck as you continue pushing the EV boulder uphill...
The Princess was a great car... as far as I remember it. My father had one for a while and took us on family trips in it for a year or two. Sure was distinctive and not too bad for roominess for a collection of kids in the back. Funny how we don't see many of them around on the roads anymore though. It's a bit sad.
Thanks Gavin for the excellent review. I ordered a Model Y after a test drive last week. You really need to drive one to understand why they are so popular. I saw an Ioniq 5 & EV6 up close & was surprised how small they look in comparison. I'm happy to wait til Feb - May 2023 as I need the FBT EV Legislation to go thru tho it is still unclear when this will be. I got an estimate that said I'll save $376 a fortnight on tax or close to $10k a year so am hoping it passes asap.
22:55 I wouldn’t be surprised that Tesla owners will get cheaper charging at superchargers as offset when it’s opened up. Say here in Australia the highest are $0.69 pkw, ild say that be the price for “others” and say $0.40 pkw for Tesla owners.
Thanks for the video Considering the amount of Teslas sold in NZ the Supercharging network is pathetic. 14- 15 chargers over the whole of NZ. 4 in the South Island. They are great to use and should be the standard but Telsa has not really made much effort on this one.
Wiper - just press manually once & wiper control presents on the screen allowing to change its frequency. Easy! The longer u own & know Tesla, is going to b only easier & better. All drivers can suggest any possible improvement for users, can always feedback. Tesla does collate feedbacks. Eg. Improvement is made to blind spots screen position. Now is adjustable to your most suitable position. Cheers!
Just had a visit from a friend with a model 3. So we had to go for a drive, as you do. I'm an older person, reasonably fit BUT. How on earth does a 6'3" unwind during and after after getting in. It's like getting into a bathtub, bum first! Not my sort of car! So maybe the mod Y? Your excellent review unfortunately brushed over the entry-exit situation and I'm still none the wiser. Cheers John
Great review! If you're up for an autopilot-like battle between a tesla and my toyota corolla with openpilot, let me know. It's an absolute dream on the Auckland motorways.
Wish you could have a 'driving mode' on that big screen which would turn on UI with all the standard buttons for AC, audio, seat heating, performance etc. Voice commands just seem too much effort.
Yeah Model Y estimated delivery went from August/September to November/December one day after reservations became available in 🇳🇿. I'd like to see vehicle to load, would be nice to be able to hook up a camping induction stove. Although you could probably use a inverter on the 12v.
Hi there. I'm planning a trip to New Zealand later this year and am hoping to rent a Model 3 from Auckland. I've gone camping in the Model Y in the States several times now during the pandemic. I've even hooked it up to a powered (110V) campsite when I was in Oregon. I assume you haven't tested this out, but were you able to trickle charge the Tesla Y when you were camping? I assume you were at a non-powered site? Were there adapters provided with your Tesla? I know the power plugs are different in the US vs. NZ so I just wanted to see if anyone has had any experience camping & charging a Tesla. Any help would be appreciated! Thank you!
If there's one thing that makes me nervous with Tesla its reliability. Suspension component failure is not something you should have to worry about in a new car. I think I'd rather have a Kia EV6, but need to drive both!
Waited for Model Y for years. Finally got sick of waiting and went for the 3LR a year ago. Haven't regretted it since. The more space I miss maybe once or twice a year. Drives great. My father has the Model Y now and I prefer the 3. Might still have to upsize when kids arrive.
Of course the press car will be perfect fit and finish. It will be selected to be that way. It does seem the Chinese models are better built like this one but I don’t think Tesla is off the hook for fit and finish issues vs their competitors.
Yep not a good looking car that's for sure. I absolutely hate the interior, the touch screen for many basic functions is super dumb and backwards imho.
One thing I hate about New Zealand is they call U.K. people pommy, no New Zealand guy calls us that when visiting U.K. , as they know we don’t like it , no English guy in U.K. will allow that , it’s rude and it courses bullying. The new model y giga cast will be 1 whole shell - the doors front wings and boot , and can be spot welded in accident and much stronger like a carbon bike 1 shell easier power transfer , stiffer body , it’s not just about being electric ⚡️ it’s a change into the way a car is built , cyber truck will be musk best creation yet , as no more trolly supermarkets dents from a stainless steel body
Who has a phone with buttons these days? Nokia went away because apple and android appeared with nearly no buttons and we all moved to those ones. It’s the same with cars. Buttons cost money. :)
The thing you mentioned about the wipers made me laugh. I thought I was the only one. Need my car wipers to run for the exact amount needed. 😂
You CAN use voice commands to set the wipers easily, though.
One of the best realistic reviews I've seen. Love the random visit to panel beater....

Wow! I'm amazed you got all the way back to Auckland without a coffee. Great review!
Best model Y review I've watched.

Good video and now that my washer fluid is empty instead of refilling I think I’ll get a model Y now.
When are you picking up yours?

Great review, I posted the link on Model Y Australia Facebook group and it’s getting lots of favourable comments!
Brilliant and entertaining review Gavin. First deliveries of Model Y are taking place in AUS now. How exciting.

Great review. Loved it. Instant subscribe to the channel. Just got my Model Y. Will definitely be trying out camping mode soon for sure:)
Awesome video Gavin 👏
Best review yet
How amazing does the blue look under those lights. The blue is underrated colour on line up
I'm the same with the wipers! I thought I was the only one, great video!
I just couldn’t contain my laughter any more by about 2:45 - “British Leyland woodgrain”… I’m also 42 and my first car was an Austin Princess

The princess, like the Model Y, also had a shocking view out of the rear window. Unlike the Y it didn’t have a reversing camera!
Wiper controls pop up when you press the wiper button on the stalk btw.

lol, glad It's not just me with wiper control ;)

Did you notice the graph showing the amount of energy you’ll get to your destination with? Most useful.
Wiper controls pop up under the virtual car when you tap the stalk... thats when I fine adjust mine.
With the slim price difference this should murder the 3 in sales, better sound system, towing, space etc

Accurately its made in China. I myself would not buy another Australian/American brand. But Tesla have changed my mind. Well done

You are lucky in NZ. The Model Y in Australia is over 75K AUD! Do that price (69K NZD) is drive away?
76k nzd now for base model and almost 110k for performance model so not cheap by any stretch
"As American as free healthcare..."

Nice 👌
You have a boot.
Therefore the one at the front is the froot. Front boot. :)
need new music for the videos on the channel.... going crazy from the track ngl
What were you doing to consume 14% power over the 12hours of camping mode? Is that heat pump and Netflix?
Please could we ditch the annoying background music. Otherwise great review.
You can do much anything from voice command
NZ campground without cutlery, plates, saucepan and hot water? - hmmm, a bit of artistic license 😁
What was the Real World Range during your Test?
Are you sure it was built in America?
I say windshield... wonder if that would work... my voice command works for defogging: 'defog windshield'....
So you don't have the AC on?
It’s cold! Why cool the air? Having the fan on is enough to keep the window demisted and saves energy.
