YES, this is a BIG difference. The EV6 is eligible for the $7,500 federal tax credit and the MSRP is less. Another plus for the KIA is that it is sold and serviced by every KIA dealer throughout the US. So even in rural America you're much closer to a KIA repair facility than with a Tesla.

The Koreans seem to be significantly ahead of the Japanese in electrification. I don't think they have that much factory capacity for the EV6/Ionic models, and probably the USA will only get 10K or 20K of these, which will easily sell out. Good to see some competition for Tesla. As these are just the first ones from Hyundai group, I expect the next generation to be significantly better. They are already competent, so the next round will give Tesla a real battle.

@@davekozlowski1266 Mild electrification seems to add about 8k to the price of a car like the RAV4, which makes it a tough decision, and full electrification seems to add about 20k to the price of a car. This will come down over time, as we can see in the Ford Maverick, where for the first time a hybrid model is cheaper than the gas only version. Consumers responded enthusiastically, and the Maverick has a 1 year waiting list.
The Koreans have access to basically infinite capital, and they can price new cars at whatever they want; but so far they are getting about 50k for them, because they are very nice.
The market lets you charge a premium for electric only, and until more competition arrives, it will be a high-end product.

The reason why the the Japanese are behind at this moment in time on their EVs (at least according to Honda's CEO) is due to wanting to wait for the better battery tech (solid state) to become mainstream before they go all in. They believe in a couple of years the lithium ion batteries will be outdated so they feel like it is better to wait it out for the solid state tech. I kind of get the logic as many auto experts are saying that due to the advantages solid state batteries have, more people will be investing in switching to an EV.

When it comes to driving, the EV6 feels far more stable. I driven both a Panmera and a Taycan (no 911) I would say the EV6 is far closer with a planted feel at highway speeds where as the Y felt semi-unstable at higher speeds. Also, the Y I test drove already had issues such as door rattles, and storage bin doors that wouldn't work. KIA is (now) known for decent build quality, and also way better warranty. Also in real world driving, the EV6 seems to be achieving its range estimates (however barely) while the Model Y is way off, typically meeting the EV6. I do believe its on the small size though, and is more wagon that SUV or even CUV, but I think the same can be said about the Y. It doesn't have that white knuckle acceleration, but I didn't miss it when testing it, and its far more user friendly and practical. I also looked at a 700 mile drive on better route planner, and the EV6 only stops twice for charging, while the Model Y had me stopping over 5 times. The charge times were way different, but that's a lot of stops, almost as much as a Hummer (7 if I recall). I'd choose the EV6 first.

As a Tesla model 3 owner that drives a lot, I’m very interested in the alternatives. It’s GREAT to hear that someone has made a more comfortable competitor. However, once you’re used to the acceleration and autopilot on the Tesla that’s hard to give up. How does the Kia/Hyundai lane keep assist/adaptive cruise control compare to Tesla? What about the acceleration? Also, how do safety features compare? It’s really good to know that Tesla was given such a high rating. The interior does look like Kia has put a lot of thought into it, but I’m not convinced that a Kia will hold its value nearly as well as a Tesla. I hope I’m wrong, I wish them success!

EV6 is nice, but here in South Florida I've gone to several Kia Dealerships and no one has any. While Tesla is making about 60,000 Model Y's per month BEFORE opening Giga Texas AND Giga Berlin, which should DOUBLE Model Y production by the end of the year. Kia is only making about 6,000 EV6 per month. They have the same issue with the Ioniq 5, the Kona Electric, the Kia Niro, pretty much all their electric cars, so while it may be a "compelling alternative" if you can't get one, what's the point? At least with Tesla you can order a car and even though you have to wait 6 months you actually get it. At Kia, they won't even let me place an order. All they do is try to get me to buy a Gas Powered vehicle, of which I have ZERO interest.

Telsa only makes 4 models. So they can make 10s of thousands of one model. They also make only EVs. Kia makes many different models and different types of vehicles. The Kia EV6 is ramping up. It's only in its first year where Tesla's 3 and Y have been made for a few years now. It's going to take some time before Kia is building a lot more EV6s and they also have more EV models coming out, like the EV6 sedan.

@@benjaminsmith2287 But wasn't that the whole thing that everyone was saying... "Just wait until Legacy Auto gets in the game" and "They're going to SWAMP Tesla with cars" .... The Kona and Niro EV's have been out since 2018 and they started importing them to the USA in 2019. Each are STILL limited both in production AND the number of states they're available in. Here in South Florida we can't even get the Kona EV not even in a special order and as for the Niro EV, the dealerships WON'T take orders because they don't even know when is the next time they will get them... When they do get them customers get into a bidding war over them. NOBODY gets the stated "$289 a month lease" A Kia Dealer told me that he was so excited when the EV6 was announced, because he figured that it would end the electric car shortage at the place, but the EV6 has changed nothing they STILL don't make enough and most dealers only get 1 or 2 every couple of months. He told me he could literally sell 2 or 3 a day with all the demand, but of course there is no REAL supply. Let's face it, Hyundai doesn't want to ramp down their other cars to sell EV's because they have way too much money invested in that business. They bring in people interested in EV's and use that as a way to "Bait and Switch" customers into buying their ICE cars or a Hybrid.

But at the moment, neither of these are enticing me away from my ID3 Family Edition which cost less than half the price of these cars, has a full panoramic roof, reasonably good performance and a real world range of 180-250 miles (depending of conditions).
If i'm paying twice the price then I will only switch to a Model Y once they are using the next generation of battery tech and WLTP range is in excess of 400 miles. And as the EV6 feels too cramped I will wait for the EV7 and if that has improved headroom, a panoramic roof and upgraded battery tech with a 400+ miles range then i'm in. By your logic, that also means that Tesla is not capable of all the features the EV6 has that Teslas do not. Like an instrument panel (imagine having one of those in a car!), or a heads up display (so the driver is actually looking at the road), Carplay and Android Auto, 360° camera, actual buttons to control common features (so you dont have to buy special gloves just to drive your car), a sunroof that opens with a shade (so you aren't constantly baking under the sun), cooled ventilated seats (a common feature on cars much cheaper than a Tesla), a comfortable ride (though, why would people want to be comfortable in their car?), vehicle to load capability, 800v charging, decent build quality, driver assistance systems that are not constantly giving false alerts (phantom braking), and styling that is interesting.
If Tesla were capable of doing these things, they would have. So they must be completely incapable.

Technically the model Y handles better. It did significantly better in the moose test for stability and handling than the EV6. The model Y is also a full time AWD, whilst the EV6 AWD variants switch to RWD at speeds over 40 km/h. You can stream your music in the Tesla even without your phone! So no plugging it in with a physical cable every time you enter the car.
And yes the Y has significantly more boot and frunk space. But it also has objectively more interior space with higher head rooms and the drivers seats being off the floor meaning you can stretch your legs out straight under the seat infront, the EV6 can’t do that.
