Butt Rock to me always felt like a term that people would use to describe certain Nu-Metal and Post-Grunge bands that they didn't like, I've even heard people refer to Linkin Park's music as butt rock even though they're the furthest thing from it.
But of the bands that have been saddled with the label, Here's my take on it:
Nickelback - Yeah obviously, They're the first band you think of when hearing the term.
Creed - Their first album is pure Post-Grunge, But the rest of the discography definitely has those dude-bro vibes.
Puddle Of Mudd - They're the closest that second wave Post-Grunge ever gets to being genuine grunge (Cause they formed and released music during the grunge era), But songs like Control and Spaceship put them squarely in the butt rock category. Though I'd argue that they're on the lesser scale since their lyrics and image aren't nearly as frat-bro esc, Wes mostly writes about substance abuse issues and personal struggles which are more in line with Grunge and Nu-Metal. (A lot of people actually consider them Nu-Metal but I don't really see it)
3 Doors Down - Musically I'm inclined to say yes, But nothing else about them gives off that impression.
Shinedown - I think their first two albums probably qualify, But the rest of their music is much more sophisticated than the rest of the Post-Grunge genre. They also don't have any of that frat-bro energy the other bands do, Not even close.
Staind - I'm torn, Lyrically they definitely have more of a Nu-Metal vibe, But musically it's a toss up. That first album is straight Nu-Metal but the rest I'm inclined to agree.
Seether - Same deal as Puddle Of Mudd, They have songs that give off more of a frat-bro vibe, But the rest of their music falls more in line with Nu-Metal and straight Post-Grunge. They also have the Shinedown thing going on where their lyrical content is often more sophisticated than the other bands.
Godsmack - The consensus seems to be split down the middle on whether or not they qualify as butt rock. Image wise I don't think any other band radiates tough-guy energy more than they do, But the music itself is straight Nu-Metal and Hard Rock. They've also gone down the Shinedown path and started to write far more sophisticated lyrics compared to when they started. So I'm willing to say that outside of a couple of songs, They don't qualify.
Chevelle - ...No, There is nothing about them that radiates butt rock energy. This is one of those cases where people will just randomly label bands as something they are not. Chevelle is straight Nu-Metal and Post-Grunge
Disturbed - It's the same case as Godsmack where their image and early material radiates tough-guy energy, But the rest of their discography doesn't. So no, They also don't qualify.
Three Days Grace - Image wise I could see it, But their music is way too emotional in order to qualify. Much closer to the Linkin Park area of the Nu-Metal genre.
Five Finger Death Punch - I've seen a lot of people refer to this band as butt rock, But I just don't think their music can even qualify properly. If "butt metal" ever becomes a thing than I think FFDP should be the poster child for it.
Buckcherry - There are bands that radiate frat-bro energy, There are bands that radiate tough-guy energy, And then there's Buckcherry who makes stripper rock anthems, So I'd argue that they fit the definition better than any other band out there.
Hinder - No arguments here, 100% butt rock
Theory of a Deadman - They're affiliated with Nickelback, Need I say more?
Breaking Benjamin - No, Not even remotely.
Finger Eleven - Pretty sure that they're just straight Nu-Metal
Drowning Pool - I don't see it, Another straight Nu-Metal band
    Flyleaf - I also don't see it
Limp Bizkit - While I get people's reasoning for thinking that they qualify, Nu-Metal and Butt Rock are not the same thing, Fred Durst has the highest tier of frat-bro energy one could possible imagine but that doesn't make the music not what it is. They have ties to the scene, But they're not fully apart of it I wouldn't say.
Matchbox Twenty - No, Their music definitely falls into that category. But nothing else about them radiates any kind of frat-bro energy.
Trapt - Not really, Their vocals and lyrics are way more whiny compared to most of the other bands. I'd put them into the same category as Three Days Grace but on a lesser scale since Trapt is terrible and their lead singer is insane.

Godsmack's acoustic album "The Other Side" sounds like pure Alice In Chains. Even their name "Godsmack" is an Alice In Chains song - "God Smack." As for the rest of their discography, outside of a few songs here and there, I don't care for their music.
I also find it hilarious that for a band who's image is tough guy dude-bros, they're all 5ft2 stick figures.

I was hurt by The Killers and Chevelle being called Butt Rock. Somewhat hurt by Staind being called Buttrock because of their extremely heartfelt/relatable songs on addiction and depression but they do have some songs i would argue could be seen as buttrock. That one felt extremely subjective and should be thrown out of the "genre"

Pearl Jam is not butt rock. Just because they influenced butt rock bands doesn’t mean they themselves are butt rock (just like Faith No More isn’t Nu Metal even though they heavily influenced Nu Metal bands).

    • @elliottmangum3583

THEY CALLED PEARL JAM BUTT ROCK?? I didnt know because i stopped watching after they called The Killers butt rock which was like less than a min in.
I think the person making the video and alot of others just consider butt rock to be anything they cant stand to listen to personally. I think there should be other factors such as lyrical and musical complexity and depth of the message. Nickelback is as deep as a puddle in all those areas so it works... But Pearl Jam? That feels like a completely irrational assessment to put it lightly.

I have always been surprised that Breaking Benjamin gets put in the butt-rock category. Their music has always been a lot heavier than a lot of other butt-rock bands. To me, they have always had much more in common with metalcore and nu-metal. Even their most popular song 'The Diary of Jane' is a straight up metal song with growling vocals, heavy riffs, and groovy drums. They also have some songs that are 100% melodic metalcore such as 'Sugarcoat', 'Red Cold River', 'Tourniquet', and many more. Their music has always sounded more like Linkin Park, Tool, and Bullet for My Valentine as opposed to Nickelback, Creed, or Puddle of Mud. Furthermore, they never had the same energy as a lot of butt-rock bands. Their music is very dark, and emotional and deals with some heavy subject matter such as struggle with faith, addiction, depression, etc. Ben Burnley's voice is also very melodic and emotional and sounds very similar to that of Chester Bennington and Maynard James Keenan. All in All, I think Breaking Benjamin should be considered as a 2000s alternative metal band as opposed to a butt-rock band.

    • @PuddleOfPizza
      @PuddleOfPizza Před 11 měsíci +2

A lot of Nu-Metal bands get lumped into the butt-rock category despite being much heavier than all of those bands combined. With some of them I can understand the reasoning (Disturbed and Godsmack for instance radiate dude-bro energy regardless of how heavy their music was), But the rest just make no sense to me.
Butt-rock as I've always understood it is supposed to be low-tier frat-guy rock, The kind of mediocrity that mostly focuses on bad relationships and old rock and roll lifestyles. That's what bands like Nickelback, Buckcherry, and Theory of a Deadman mostly focus on. (Creed's music is nothing like that but they radiate the energy regardless)
Puddle Of Mudd have a few songs that fit into that category but overall their music isn't that meat headed in comparison. Wes mostly wrote about his personal struggles, Which is more in line with actual Grunge and Nu-Metal than it is whatever the hell Buckcherry and Hinder sing about.
(I'd consider them just straight Post-Grunge, With some Nu-Metal influences in the song writing department)
Breaking Benjamin falls more into the Three Days Grace and Linkin Park category of Nu-Metal, Way too emotional to be propped up with the actual butt-rock bands. Same can be said for Shinedown and Chevelle. Anyone who labels these Nu-Metal bands as butt-rock only do so because they don't personally like them. Otherwise they're the furthest thing from it.

"Nirvana is Grunge. Period. End of story" but Pearl Jam isn't? Talk about hot takes. As someone who never cared for Pearl Jam, I can tell you that's an awful take. As for "everyone" trying to sound like Eddie, who is everyone? Creed? Days of the New? Maybe a few other bands? Most of the post-Grunge/butt-rock bands were trying their hardest to sound like Kurt Cobain, including Nickelback, who you claim are the poster children of Butt-Rock. In fact, I don't really hear any Pearl Jam when it comes to Nickelback. I just hear preppy dudes who can't decide if they want to sound like Nirvana or Alice In Chains.
