Angry Video Game Nerd (AVGN) episode 193: Sega Game Gear VHS Tapes. In the 1990's Sega and Howard Johnson's hotels teamed up for a weird promotion for the Game Gear. Kids could go "HoJo with Sega" during this summer promotion. Parents could rent a Game Gear the kids could play while on their vacation, or they could buy some of the Game Tips VHS tapes. These tapes are horrible, filled with basic walkthroughs, codes, and bull. They also have these wrap-around segments with a 90's surfer dude with a Foghorn Leghorn accent working at the Howard Johnson. He goes through almost every position on the hotel staff while making the life one of chubby businessman a living hell. The Nerd reviews this tape today and talks a little bit about the HoJo/Sega promotion.

You'd never want to be near a hotel after watching this.
Can you really call this a hotel? I didn't receive a mint on my pillow or anything.
Correction; you don't want to be withing a 100 miles of a Howard Johnson after this.
I didn't like being in hotels before.
Oh it’s fine. That sort of thing would never happen in a real hotel.
This has no affect on me being comfortable at hotels
Not gonna lie, with all the cameos lately, I half expected the actual 90’s Game Gear guy to appear too lol
SAME
Same! 😅😅😅
Same, or even a video phone call in
They did though, the guy at the end was him, right? 🤨
My thoughts exactly!!!
Man... 90's were bizarre. Their CZcams sh*tposts were VHS tapes that you needed to buy with your money.
The early and mid-90's were great.
@@Aeimos I grew up in the 1990s and early 2000s.. I hated VHS 📼 When DVDs came along I fell in love and still collect them to this day.. I buy Blu Rays but If it's a rare DVD I will buy it in a heartbeat..
@@kenrickeason a false prophet among us. VHS is the way.
@@kenrickeason I remember when I was a little kid in the late 90s early 2000s
When I frist saw a dvd Case I was like what the heck is this? Why is it so thin?
The best part of these VHS is that if they were edited just a little differently they could have easily been horror movies about a man trapped in a hotel and being tormented by a Game Gear cult
When someone in the Nerd's basement shouted "Hojo" I legit thought he's got the long-haired dude as a guest star.
Was searching if someone else wrote this. After Pepsiman dude now I'm a bit disappointed :-D
Me to!
I completely expected him to drop in at any moment
Same
same, I figured if he can get Pepsiman, he can get this guy
Imagine being a customer at a HoJos trying to relax only to have a weird guy invading your personal space with strobe lights causing you to have constant epileptic seizures. Times were weird back then.
i have not watched the video yet, so this is really confusing
I just did and I feel like s*** and a bit my tongue :(
Not the worst experience someone has had in a living situation with a hojo.
Still beats days inn
That's just the ecstasy kicking in.
Everybody gangsta until the Nerd turns into Garth from Wayne's World.
Lol
Bully!
I was thinking Howard Stern
No. Everybody is not gangsta.
He reminded me of Max Headroom.
That ending had me in tears! What a great episode. B-Dubs!
I like how out of nowhere, he just says "I cut my thumb".
and a few seconds later he looks at it and hides it without skipping a beat lol
I couldn't stop staring at his thumb lol
He cut his thumb
@@R_I-C_H is it still on?
Ouchies.
I remember this whole thing and trying to get my parents to stay at a Howard Johnson so I could get the Sega fun pack. Times were different. Lol
Look at this legend
He answered my giward johnson questions
Wait howard Johnson was giving away a sega fun pack?
In those days of pre-internet (or at best very crude early internet) it felt like you were uncovering this secret. Makes me think of the same thing with horror movies and stuff. Knowing about things like Evil Dead movies as a teenager in the mid 90s I felt like I was part of some elite secret society or something.
Dude, I remember getting one of those fun packs packs back in the summer of 93'. I thought that was one of the coolest things ever (call me simply minded). I kept my long afterwards took it out while watching the SATAM Sonic series on Saturday mornings. I probably wouldn't still have it today had it not been for my mother accidental throwing out.
As a hotel employee, this might be my favorite video of yours. I'm dying laughing here. 😂😂
It’s ridiculous to hear the AVGN call something “insanely inappropriate” lol.
This just proves that video game marketing has always been terrible.
Yep, because people who play with prostitutes on their jacht, are not people who play with video games in their parents basement so there is no connection they can't relate to the customers at all, they have no idea what gamers want.
Except when it's about a guy in a karate gi beating up folks for not playing the Saturn.
It peaked with Mortal Monday.
Except for the one or two awesome Nintendo Power VHS tapes that I watched over, and over - 2:36
No it doesn’t, and no it hasn’t
Missed opportunity for a knuckles Sandwich...
Ouuuuu...touchè. ;)
No, if the Crazy Dude did that the business man would actually sue
OK, you win the internet today
After every bite you go "Oh no!"

This is like that episode of Garfield where some guy keeps trying to get Jon to buy a magazine subscription.
I’ve seen it & liked it.
I feel like someone could make a horror movie trailer out of that video.
Could have fooled me I thought it was.
Japan had Segata Sanshiro, the US had this long haired fellow. We got hosed.
He was the mascot for the Sega Saturn.
We got hojo'd*
You can't bit Sanchiro!
The US had Phil LaMarr, actually. He was the announcer for the "Plaything" and "Pretendo" Sega Saturn commercials.
I think you mean 'We got Hojo'd'.
Imagine the horrendous things they’ll do to you if you bring a gameboy…
Smash it in front of you toss the remains in the pool and bill you for it
They make you dinner
*Segata Sanshiro theme starts blaring*
It actually repels that guy, so I recommend doing so.
@@slyfox2022 I don't think a hydraulic press could smash a gameboy.
Lol, we actually DID used to call Howard Johnson “HoJo” in our family. And I really don’t think it came from this, but I think they were pushing it a lot in the 90’s in general.
"And I don't like it" at the end, only true fans will get it.
If you stay at a Howard Johnson hotel, and the bellboy asks for a tip, tell him how to open the door.
Underrated comment right here
Bravo, sir
lol
I audibly snorted xD
When he started hearing someone say "HoJo" in the background, I thought he was gonna have the original actor show up. That would have been awesome.
Still probably a bit too close to a pandemic to have a cameo
5:52 my 75-year-old dad still calls Howard Johnsons "HoJos"... and I don’t think it's from having watched these videos (lol).
Going Hojo is when you steal your jilted ex's baby and turn it into a mutant

He's the angriest VHS tape nerd..
yooooooooooou've eeeeever heeeeeeeard..

He's the B-Dubs, Betamax nerd
He's also an angry DVD neeeeeeerrrrd
Naw, he's so angry that he forgot it was a VHS tape, after all the other games on cartridges and videodisc or whatever, that he doesn't realize it's a VHS tape.

welp, there's a sign of the end times
Kinda suprised Limited Run published that
If I were a kid when these tapes came out I would say “No thanks I would rather get a Game Boy”
The nerve of some people...
Hearing him say "I don't like it." in a simple, normal tone after going on a tangent never ceases to amuse me
I love how I look straight at his thumb and he noticed I was and says “I cut my thumb”
to be honest I didn’t even noticed till he said it
And I kept staring at it after till he hid it.
That housekeeper disguise could’ve given Bugs Bunny a run for his money
Honestly the funniest ending of an AVGN episode I've ever seen. Been watching since '07 and I was literally in constant tears 🤣🤣🤣
Not you are not
It just warms my heart when the nerd discovers he likes saying "B-Dubs".
the character is like Jay from Jay and Silent Bob if he never got high and never met Bob. lol
I was thinking the exact same thing
Except Jay can actually be funny.
Honestly, if you put him with Jay, I'd mistake Jay for the sober one
You read my friggin mind.
Nah pretty sure he still high

It's ok. You don't have to apologize.

The editing made it lol
I was dying 🤣
if there was ever an episode that needed a 'what were they thinking?' and didn't get one, it's this.
That dude is like a slightly less douchy version of Kid Rock.
“I cut my thumb” in the real world James just had an accident with a butter knife. In the nerd canon the nerd got an injury in a rematch with bugs bunny.
I heard he got in a knife fight with that guy who killed all his friends. What was his name again?

So the long-haired crazy dude is actually the victim of a virus that slowly turns people into advertisers for Sega Game Gear and this hotel; it's actually kind of a tragedy.
He actually has some talent.
Reminds me of the weegee virus. Everyone who stares back at him turns into weegee. xD
The Sega Snatchers
Wonder where he is now, and does he feel a proper amount of shame in his old age?
Well imagine covid19 in 1990s...
wow, the way that dude looks and speaks looks like he could be right at home as your classical AVGN villain along the lines of the Joker and Bugs Bunny. Part of me was expecting a cameo to be honest.
I love when James does other voices, especially as the nerd; the end part made me legitimately giggle 😄👌
Ah yes, my favorite tip:
"How to open a door"
What cracks me up, is I have that Taz game in my collection, and it's VERY cryptic. Yet, "going through a door" is the tip they included.
Nah, go through it!
Listen, some times pull and push gets mixed up.
"How to jump"

This was pretty cool to see one of the most obscure Sega Sonic promotions I've ever seen but not every promotion is going to be a hit unfortunately & age well. I'm glad this vid was made on it although comically. This shows how hot Sonic's popularity was in the 90's & how much Sega needed to capitalize on it to remain successful
The AVGN : Talking about tips, numerous times, throughout the entire video.
Me, a man of culture : Remembering Sterling Archer's 'Just the tip' compilation. 😹
Going Hojo sounds like trapping animals to make them cross-breed.
I hate/love you for making this reference.
And then putting alien cells in your son while he's still a fetus.
I thought I might not be the only one thinking along those lines.
And then injecting himself with those same cells during his boss fight.
?
I liked that employee better when he was the guitarist from Alice in Chains
He had some nice legs.
I wish Jerry Cantrell was an employee at a HoJo
He looked a little like early 90's Hetfield to me lol
This is something Brutalmoose would review
Yay another Brutalmoose fan
Maybe that Hotel is actually owned by that crazy scientist from FF7: Hojo
Part of me is screaming "how is this a thing that existed?" and then I remember that the 90s were a thing that happened and not just a weird fever dream.
But did they really? At this point in my life I'm not sure that those years even actually happened.
The 90's were a decade long fever dream
Barcode battler was a thing.
Sometimes I wonder if we'll look back at the 2000s and 10s the same way. The 80s and 90s definitely seemed very "primal" as far as entertainment goes.
The 90s was the last great decade!
Little known fact. The long haired concierge was the basis for Nicolas Cage's accent for Cameron Poe in Con Air. True story.
Cameron Poe, Poe Dameron (starwars), COINCIDENCE?!?!
That’s amazing 🤩

It's like, just when you think James has toned it down a bit.....blam!!!
Sega’s epically absurd, in-your-face marketing campaign is the stuff of legends, the likes of which we have yet to see replicated again in the game industry.
hey, it worked for a while, they actually managed to get some folks to believe that the Sega Genesis is better than SNES.......... **runs**

I've been watching Cinemassacre content for years, especially AVGN, and I have to say this episode felt like the early ones I loved so much. I couldn't stop laughing and the ending was the best. Too bad the real guy couldn't show up 😂

@@crazysilly2914 not surprising, because Switch (and every console) has "Night Trap" on it. Probably so we can lolz at it. It's shocking to think back in the mid 1990s politicians (left & right) thought "Night Trap" was as bad as "pr0nz."
the only difference is that it's full motion video
I went hojo as a kid. I totally remember this, wish I kept it.
Thank you for making me laugh so hard I cried. Priceless. I have one of those Sega tapes lol.
This tape is like a horror film where the victim becomes insane and joins the cult

Usually alot of guest appearances do that all the time
Epilogue: that man died after the console wars ended in the early 2000s. His life force was connected to the GameGear as hinted in his videos. SEGA!!!

and also filmmaker. He did an 'adaptation' of "Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde: The Game: The Movie".
And he inspired Norman, the video game historian
And a certified filmmaker as well. Can't wait for "Dragon in my dreams"
He went from an angry energetic dork who lives in a basement to a 80s kid reliving his past in his basement
