- It's the WEEKEND! Let's play with some scanners!
I recently bought the LAUNCH X431 Diagun IV:
bit.ly/2OPJYeWW
For less than $700, it promises to have the capabilities of a "BIG" scanner... but looks like a smartphone...TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE?
Let's take it on a real TEST-DRIVE, and see how well it stacks up to the powerhouse Snap-On Verus, and the trusty Autel MaxiDas DS708 on 5 different vehicles from 2010 to 1992:
Part 1:
2009 Subaru Forester
2010 Nissan Rogue at 19:50
Part 2:
2002 Suzuki XL-7
1996 Mercury Mystique
1992 Oldsmobile Sillouhette (place your bets now!)
I focus on the real-world usability of the scanner, including special functions and BI-DIRECTIONAL controls.
Enjoy!

This is exactly the kind of video I was needing. Not just having a scan tool but how to use it step by step. I would like to see each of your scan tools shown in this manner. Great video, THANKS IVAN!!!
Glad you found it useful, Miguel!
Thanks for your feedback
@@kingbolen_official I am looking for a plcae that sells this in sweden but I cant find. Do you guys have any tips?
@@rimmersbryggeri You can order it on our global website that it support ship to sweden kingbolentool.com/collections/professional-bi-directional-scanner
I am always impressed with the way you tackled the new scaner. You are truly a great communicator. Never miss your videos BillN LINY can’t wait for the next video
Very good and thorough comparative analysis Ivan! Thank you for making these videos! I truly appreciate your efforts and have learned so much from you! Thumbs up as always!
This is going to be a great series and ought to help lots of folks make a decision about this tool.
Excellent review just what I was looking for since I saw Danny and keith saying great things about this launch mini
Awesome video!! Very good explanation. Thanks for showing us how things work compared to other scanners. Very interesting! I enjoyed it
Omg effin finally somebody made a legit video on real world real use. Great job bro
I have been waiting for this comparison! Especially against the Autel.
I'm glad you'll be real world testing it as well, most just cover of what it is capable of doing, but not actual.
Looking forward to the rest.
i have the pros mini for about 6 months now and love it, the other day was scanning a 2010 charger don't know what happened but no comm. with the tcm, hooked up verus and had no problem, beats me but I still love it great compact little tool, it's the one i grab first. thanks Ivan.
Scan tool reviews are a huge help Ivan. It's a sickener you need 3 or 4 of them is all....great vid mate, keep em comin'. More scan tool Vids please.....ppl want to know what does what before shelling out the hard earned....
If you work only on VW and have the dealer tool you still need another one becasue the VW one stops working all the time.
Ivan excellent video. Thanks for the video showing all it can do. I have one also but Purchased mine without all the extra adapters. I own a 1999 EXL accord 3.0 and a 2007 Odyssey 3.5. I need to check to see if it has the fuel pump option if you can turn it off while the engine is running on both cars. I also just replaced the R/H ABS sensor because the wife said she felt a chatter when applying the brakes at very low speed but no ABS light illuminated. Changed the R/H wheel speed sensor because while doing the brakes I found the sensor completely frozen into the hub and destroyed it getting it out. Problem is now gone. According to Paul Danner, the VSR has low sensibility at very low speed but will activate the braking system. Changed the brakes and front rotors even though they were well within spec. mainly because of age. The car only has 58000 miles like brand new. Now to use tool to see if it communicates with the ABS system. Looking forward to the next video. ❤️️
The maxisys will also store an extensive history of all of the cars you’ve scanned as well. If you click on the history tab from the main screen where you select a vehicle you can see every vehicle you’ve scanned back for years.
That is correct. Regards.
22:43 "Remember we replaced the transmission..." not we, that was all you. We just watched it while eating popcorn. 😊
Now I wish I had waited for the Digun VI before I bought my X431, this past summer. ut since I only use the device on my own vehicles and not paid diags, then I'm not unhappy. I wanted the bidirectional feature and I have that. Great video, as usual.
Nice scan tool comparison. I can tell you have been getting weekly manicures. Up next the Mystique. 🙂
Ivan,,,,I just ordered one ! I'm exited Hope it does what it says it does. I'll keep intouch & let you know what I find. I also have a repair shop In Woodbourne,ny !
I was wondering if the reason you couldn't do everything from the health report is because you paused it?
I like seeing these comparison videos, we all know different scanners have different strengths and weaknesses. I have a verus pro, otc and autel. I have encountered vehicles that the snap on works and otc or autel does not and vice versa. Good video brother.
I love my Diagun IV. That little guy is a powerful tool. Sometimes you just don’t feel like lugging a VCI and tablet around. Just make sure to turn on the alarm to remind you to grab the dongle when done.
Yup the alarm is handy for sure!
I have had a Launch X431 Pad II for a number of years now. And for the most part, I love it. The software looks and works almost identically to that Diagun IV. The only real complaint I have with mine is the lack of TPMS support for most vehicles.
Awesome video, thank you Ivan!
I love this kind of review. Thats a pretty nice tool. I bought one a few monts ago and have been bugging SMA to do simething like this but hes kinda ignoring my request. LOL The OBD1 requires the correct dongle. When I get home I'll post the part number.
what a great demonstration video! very well done! im sure this vid will help a ton of people make a better more educated decision. the diagun looks like a darn good scanner. it definately has some quirks, but i think that's true of any scanner (even at any price!) i've been thinking about picking up one of the launch 431 tablets to add to my scanner arsenal, but now i'll have to add this little guy to the list of possiblities as well.
two years ago i picked up a autel 906bt, i use it along with a snap-on verus at work everyday. the autel is another great priced, full feature scanner (aprox 1000-1500 for full tpms model) that deserves a closer look by anybody looking for a pro level scanner.
Mike Clark agreed. i have the 906ts and to me, for the price i think its the best option. it has functions the snap on doesnt have and i think its more user friendly then the launch products. just my .02
@@randomgooglename im glad to hear im not the only autel 906ts fan. I hear so many people talk badly of it and praise the snap on..but for me there seems to be a pretty significant amount of times where the autel comes through when the snapon wont. It did take me a while to learn all the quirks and how to get the most out of it but im sure glad i did, It has been a great investment. I guess all tools have there own sets of weak/strong points..the scope and the troubleshooter on snapon are definitely great to have too tho
Mike Clark the shop scanner is a solus and we have also have a tpms tool. the 906ts out classes them both in my opinion. theres been a dozen times that we had to pull mine out to access a function or pid the solus wasnt showing. i am curious about this launch scanner though. im thinking about picking one up due to the price
I'm going to buy new scan tool equipment in the next few weeks, so it is really great to see this video. I have realalized in the past that you need more than one scan tool when you work on multiple car lines. I'm probably going to end up with the Autel 908bt. The other thing I need is the OBD1 adapters because down here in Louisiana I still work on a lot of pre 96 cars they just don't rust , I worked on an 84 camaro 1 owner and never been restored and the car was in really good shape I also I like the launch but as I get older I need a bigger screen especially when I test drive. Can't wait to see it on the 92 Olds , i used to own a 92 Trans Port and that was a really good vehicle. Most of the vehicles I work on are usually around 05 to 08 year range. Thank you for taking time to make these videos they are a tremendous help and informative!
I have that autel, one thing to note. It won't support OBD1. You might get it to communicate with one module here or there if you are lucky
@@mikephelps8212 Do you know which autel has those adapters and can do OBD1
thanks for the video. i think i might grab one of these. i run an autel 906ts daily and this would be a great supplemental diagnosis tool without having to go the route of snap on. the price cant be beat thanks again!!
Hey Ivan, I just got the newer X431 PROS mini vs the older PRO mini in last week. It is very similar but a little bigger screen with all those connectors and 2 years of free updates. I registers and created an account. Did you do a full update? This ones latest factory software was only updated up to 2017. There is about 80 different updates it needed to download, took a while. It now works on many more functions on my diesel Sprinter. Today I will try it on a friends 2014 silverado pickup ABS and Traction problem. Still testing this scanner and so far like it. Thanks for doing this how to on this scanner
This was an very interesting vid comparing scan tools even tho I don't diagnostic's
I have the Veris and a Launch 431x. They complament each other. If ur doing diag's on a wide variety of vehicles, then you really need both. Hopefully someone will come up with one, reasonably priced that will do it all. I'm a little bitter against Snap-on for their outrageous price for an upgrade from the first gen Veris. I'm holding out as long as i can!
Love ur videos Ivan!
Good video Ivan. Love
My Diagun IV. This thing also has Ford pmi installation which I haven’t found in any other scan tool except the ford ids.
Yeah that’s handy to have. The Maxisys will do it too
John Pilgrim the autel has the pmi function as well? I’ll have to check mine to see if it has that. Funny how different tools have different functions.
Cody’s Auto diagnostics yeah I want to say you have to choose the programming menu at the menu where you choose diagnostics, service, etc. after you ID the vehicle.
John Pilgrim aw gotcha!
Was just looking at reviews on scan tools and saw nothing worth while until your vid. I was leaning towards the diagun because of the bi directional features. Perfect timing on your vid! For thousands less than professional grade I would say the diagun is prob best bang for your buck if you're not working out of a shop everyday. Hard to say with such limited reviews on scan tools but I feel better about the option now. Thanks a ton for taking the time to do this video bud, much appreciated! If you have what you think is a better option for under 1k, let me know please
My pleasure! This thing is definitely best bang for the buck out there for now. Technology has come a long way in a few short years. If you buy through the link in the description they might offer you a small discount since it's through a CZcams video :)
34:53, It is good to have combination of scanners if you are into automobile repairs.
Awesome insite Ivan thank you
Great info!
Will any of these scanners clear “Adblue engine start remaining”? I have 2014 Benz E250 bluetec
The launch has the cvt reset I did it on a Nissan Versa Note last month, the menus are goofy but it is in there, similar to finding the abs data in a different menu.
Where did you find it?
Hi Ivan, great video. have you ever noticed doing TPMS tire pressures that their reading from the sensor is quite a bit off than manual?. My Autel psi is reading 15 lbs more than actually my gauge. Each tire is the same and I find that kind of odd.
After a year, what's your updated opinion on this Scanner? Is it as good as advertised?
You're right, Combining Graphs is VERY cooooooollll.
(and thanks so much for this video...)
I have been using Snap-on high end scan tools for more than twenty years. Last two years I switched over to LAINCH. I tell you ,
LAINCH is far superior than the Snap-on. It is most modern , many capabilities and much more simple to use. The price is just 1/8 of Snap- tool . It covers all manufacturers and constant upgrading , free for the first two years. LAINCH is a great tool.
A wise choice, the times are developing, made in China is more and more worth buying
For the Rogue's ABS module; the ID in the health report was different from the one in the functions menu. May be it was querying the wrong one and that's why the monitors were missing.
Sharp eye! Now I wonder how that is possible lol
@@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics I could be wrong, but maybe one is for generic OBD2 readers which usually don't access monitoring functions for the ABS and the one in the special functions is the OEM module. I think it's just a oversight in the software design. perhaps.
Thanks very much for this review.! I upgraded my 2013 accord LX interior to the touring model leather power seats and need to get the srs light reset and passenger weight sensor reset, so I bought a scanner that said it could reset all that, but no luck so far. Just ordered the launch. Now if I could find the wiring diagram for the driver seat, it would be awesome!! The passenger was easy to wire up, but the driver’s seat is a whole different game.
Thanks for your support
Very good review. I’ve been watching SMA and your channel recently trying to find techs that demonstrate real world use of these tools. Better than what’s on TV these days. I’m looking at a new purchase and it’s between a launch product or the Autel MD906bt, still bouncing back and forth from on which one.
Thank you for the comment, Wes! Both Launch and Autel are good tools. Just slight differences in menus and screen size.
Got a kick out of you and Eric working on that Buick with the 3.8 running on only one coil.
Hi Ivan, try EOBD on the 92 GM, using the 431
Ivan. While it's doing the Health Report I thought I'd write this, you can use it on pretty much any Android phone(I have V+ on my old Samsung S5 I thought I had a video on it but obviously I haven't edited it yet) I'll try to get one up shortly.
Thank you,This is best Launch scan tool review video in CZcams.
I just bought the Diagun V... Hope it works well and has been updated to combat the quirks on this video... I do like Launch products....
Hello after I replace my car battery but the battery light symbol still lightning can you teach me how to use launch x431 scanner to clear the symbol
You can just click on report after the health report and it would show you the code list from all modules.
On the Subaru does it combine obd2 codes and manufacture specific code or do you have to read and clear the separately like the Snap-on scanner? I’ve always thought Snap-on should combine them.
Great question! I believe clearing them through OBDII should at least reset the MIL and clear the common ones.
Hi Ivan excellent video. I bought one of these full kits and it arrived today. Got it registered and updated today, will connect to the car tomorrow. Did yours come with a missing chrysler-6 and Subaru-9 connectors. Foam cutout in the case but nothing there. I asked the seller on ebay about it and they commented back that none of the Diagun IV's came with them. What would you use these for anyway since you connect to the car through the bluetooth dongle?
Maybe if you select the TCM directly (as for the ABS) you get a other menu/functionlist as seen in the TCM ?
I tried, it was the same :)
Looks like a neat device ivan, i would not expect perfection yet.
I don't blame the hardware of the new scanner, just how well the software was written for ease of use and how complete the vehicle data is for every car ever created.
No not the model T ford ha ha :-D
But vehicle data can be updated, hopefully that new scanner is supported well.
It has some speed problems and slow user controls, but it will improve :-D
Exploring all these tools options is our dilemma , we find our favorites and kinda the first grab , But great input Ivan I have a Matoc Maximus 3.0 basically launch product . But seems they have improved some of the launch products , accessibility best way I can put it . But do believe launch is a solid diagnostic platform . Thanks for sharing ,, thinking of a future purchase of one these because of its size alone .
I was skeptical of a "smartphone" scanner, but this thing was quite impressive. And you can throw it in your glovebox haha
I know it's a year late but I believe you initialize the trans by looking at calibration data numbers then go back to trouble codes. Place it in drive and clear codes even though theres no codes then place back in park then go back to see data calibration numbers and they should all be zeros.
I forgot I was in the same scenario with a vehicle like that and my autel Elite couldn't communicate to the vehicle but my snapon communicate to it
So glad ur doing this been torn between the digun iv and x431 pros mini
Ron Przybyszewski get the X431+ has coding etc don’t get the 431
@@weldingjunkie i will definitely look into that thanks for the input coding is definitely something good to have specially with Volkswagen n there keyfob options
Ron Przybyszewski anytime same here. I have the Autel Elite works good for that but it’s $2500
@@weldingjunkie It would be worth the price that elite maxisys has. thinking of buying one thanks for any help
Cesar Raymundo so I own many scanners the snap on Zeus, the Bosch ads625, launch torque, launch mini and two Autel I have the Elite and the IM508 IMMO machine. If i were you I would buy the new Autel 608 it’s the elite with key making and IMMO programming its a beast! The only downside is the elite has a little better hardware and 2YR subscription that’s why I bought the elite and the IM608 wasn’t out yet. The update cost of the elite after subscription is $1100 and the update cost if the IM608 is $900 the IM608 has every function the Elite has however the IM508 cost more. I think one site has it for $2700 currently. If you can’t afford the IM608 get the Elite because it’s just as good as all my other scanners. Also the elite will do 2018 Chrysler jeep Fiat and get into the security module through obd2 check out my channel I have most of the scanners on there
Will order the Lauch V Plus plus next week... ..
Keith does the Diagun IV do everything the Launch X-431 Pad II AE does? What's the difference other than size & speed?
I have the V+ & also in the 10" & yes, they're pretty much identical (useless to me for what I do over here(Australia) Immobiliser Programming & Locksmith
What would be the best value OBD2 scanner, not necessarily the Best? Have you tried the panda obd2 comma ai?
It is not silly, these company knows how to make money, that feature will come in a later up date with a new device that is incomparable with the old one
Just bought the x431 V was able to access some modules our Zeus did not offer on a 2005 E320. Also might help if you update your versus..lol just saying
Sweet little tool!
Mannn! you rock... just like me(lol) !
I have been looking for a comprehensive job like this for 100s of videos... best damned one HANDS DOWN !!!
no smart arse condescending crap, no babble, straight to it, and quick!
Thumbs up, I would give you 10 if it let me. ...and I am subscribing, which I ever hardly do!
QUESTION: how will this thing fare against a 2010 G4500 Duramax 6.6 LGH Diesel shuttle bus with air ride and a T-harness and 3 compressors (OEM, AUX(secondary Thermoking unit, and a 3rd compressor I have no idea what for)
Thanks for your video. I bought this launch 431 a while ago. Today, I’m trying to bleed the ABS break on a Toyota Sienna 2006 and it keeps tell me that the vehicle is not equip. Is there an update I need or is it just a real bad scanner that can’t do that?
I appreciate the review,I'm upgrading tools in the next month or two,I'm not sure what to get,but this helps thank u
george bonney90 the 708? I got rid of mine I have the Elite and Verus edge
Thank u I'm probably going to go with snap-on as well,I'm really trying to cover all my bases with a good scan tool and scope
george bonney90 you can find a Snap On Verus Edge complete fog $3500 on eBay I got mine for 3300 like new 18.4 I bought the Autel Elite to fill the holes and I use the pico 4425 for scope and or Verus scope
Thx for the info I really appreciate it,I'm thinking ill do something very similar to that
You meat nugget, as eric o calls them, doesn't work as well as the pen.
Did you enter the trany from the report and not directly????
Can you have multiple data on screen that you can bidirectional control? Lets say testing the EVAP system by opening the purge valve and closing the vent and checking the tank pressure?
If not do you know a good scanner that can?
Thanks....
Yup I demonstrated the custom data list when doing bidirectional controls. It's a great feature!
Is the snapon 4 5 times more expensive? Maybe licenses for all controls should be included then?
20:30 This thing is better than Snap On for European cars Ivan. It has way more special functions than my fully updated Snap On.
Perhaps the ABS is not showing data in the one menu is because there is no fault codes present.
How will I get one for Genie manlift?
Very good my friend finally son body speaks my language thanks 👍👍
Is the diagun capable of doing fuel injector balance tests on GM?
Hey, Ivan, the health report is where you will find anything wrong with any module real quick
It's a health report, its main function is to report problems if any not to do special functions or read live data, thus it showed you nothing from there but all functions were there in the module menu.
Can these x431 tools do a crankshaft relearn and vin number reprogramming the ecm? also Im assuming all the x431 tools can all do the same functions correct?
Yes sir,it can do a crankshaft relearn and ECM reset.Keith's channel "New level auto" used Diagun IV to do Nissan ECM reset.you can check his channel.
Can u advice me which one better for all
Launch or Autel full diagnostic with key programming
no matter for the price
Plz
Thankful
I've never tried the launch but I've been using an auto maxidas ds708 for a few years and love it.
The acid test will be on EU models like newer Volvo and BMW !
Yes! Unfortunately I didn't have any on the lot this weekend. But you can bet I'll try out the Diagun on the first Euro that I can get my hands on!
it is great on those ,i have been using it since last year
What about transmission code's read only?
I saw another vid of the x431 "Plus" where you can initialize. but it is $1200
Excellent video!! I was thinking about buying one. Feel much more comfortable about it now.
Thanks, Dave! You won't be disappointed! If you go through the Amazon link that I posted, the seller should give you a discount as well :)
could you elaborate a bit more on heath report versus system scan it seems redundant at the moment can you give me a scenario where you would yous each instead of the other seems to me heath report does everything !! thanks cheers
The C3+ (nissan Scan Tool) has pretty much the same options in the TCM as your launch. It also displays the CVTfluid deterioration the same way... The Maxysys mini autel displays the same info that the launch just displayed. As far as the slow system scan speeds i can assure you that it's a Nissan thing the C3+ is just as slow if not slower. In fact i prefer to use the Autel because its a little faster than the C3+ and it doesnt freeze like the c3+ but warranty work wont allow it. Anyhow i am digging the Lauch Diagun and i may just pick one up. The price it rite too. Thanks for the comparison!
Nice! Good to hear from a dealer tech. The Launch is pretty slick! Try the link amazon link in the vid description to get a discount from the seller :)
You can download apps for printers so you can print off the diag report. I have the HP app on our launch pad 2. Works quite well😎
Same here
Great tip! I'll have to do that with mine ;)
Hello Ivan,
Does this have the same software as the PAD 3 or Throttle? Will it do all the functions as the others? I am looking for a budget priced bidirectional scan tool.
Thank you,
Luz
Yes,it is the best cheapest bidirectional scan tool.
So you haven’t gotten to part two yet Ivan?
Ivan, thank you, thank you, thank you. Like everyone else is stating, this is what we need and the way your presenting it kind of answered my question on what can it do and NOT do. You also mentioned the autel, even though it has those adapters for pre-96 cars, that the software doesn't work. This is the kind of stuff I want to know cause I was getting all set to get the 906BT. WOW
Hey Robert glad you liked the presentation! There is definitely no one perfect scanner, but for the price and capability, this Launch was a no-brainer haha
Can I use HD module with Launch Diagun?
I would like a small Obd scan tool that supports Cars/Trucks
No,Diagun only works with 12V light cars
Hopefully you are on top of changing the CVT Fluid this time around!
Eh I'll just change the transmission again at 350k miles xD
Just a thought ADS 625 BOSCH they introduced can systems
Mode 6? Any info?
I like the openess of Android leading to so many devices that work similar so you don't have a steep learning curve.
Try the "Cando C Pro" Tool please
Engine "Break" Adjustment ?
Ivan I am curious could you do a video on how to start a mobile business and what credentials are needed. Regarding insurance, etc. I am thinking of doing a similar thing here in buffalo. Thank you
Different laws bud . The person to ask is Edwin Hazzard . Tell him I sent you 😉
@Pine Hollow Auto Diagnostics with the software on Diagun 4, when your 2 years free updates runs out does your scanner still work up to the point of last updates or does scanner become a brick- forcing you to buy updates every year?
It will continue to work normally. The Honda software wouldn't load shortly after my free software updates ended.
Kingbolen honored the warranty and sent me out a new Scanner. They stand behind their warranty.
Can it program an EKPM3 fuel pump module?
You should try the Xtool D8.. I've seen several people say that it is exactly like the OEM scan tools.. only $700 also
I wonder if will show “not equipped” if the module has No Comm.
$700 isn’t bad compared the $3000-$14000 that Snap-on charges for their scan tools.
Yes it does , but so far all scanners Iv seen do apart from dealer tools that index the build sheet from and online database like VW, Audi. also the more modules present the faster the health report as It takes more time for it to decide a module wont talk back then it does to pull system ok from a communicating module.
The slowest is a base BMW as the repoll timeout is about 15seconds per module and they have a lot of modules.
Is "anyways" a word in Esperanto?
will this tool relearn a crankshaft position sensor on a 2000chevy2500 6.0 l thanks .
Is 2500HD or CK-2500 ? can you show us the full car model & year number
Wich one you recommend me guys?? This one on its last version or the x431 pro mini??
Patricio Andres Muñoz Lopez right now I’m torn between this one and the pro mini. I’m not sure which one I’ll like more!
@@Houseofarrows Launch Diagun IV do updating in 2019,so the Diagun and Pro mini has the same features and both support full system diagnosis.
