As long as the roads they're driven on don't force them to travel fast all the time.
I have had the current model for last 3 years and done 36000 miles including long 400-500 mile trips. Have had no problems with comfort and have averaged 45 mpg. I think its a great car and wouldnt change it for any other.
I was thinking of getting one myself but the only drawback for me is the fuel consumption but if you're averaging 45 mpg then thats very good

owned many 4x4s and this one has all the faults mentioned but it was the best buy I ever did. simply great fun. mega simple to fix without breaking the bank. For me it ticks every box and I would buy another in a heartbeat.
I got my first Jimny in 1980. Replaced it in 1990 and again in 2005. You could call me a fanboy, and I admit loving this little marvel to bits. I used to live on a small Tasmanian Island, so driving long distances was never an issue. My off-roading consisted only with dirt roads and beach travel. I can recommend the Jimny to anyone loving small cars. All three were absolutely reliable, and I had never any problems. I live now in the city, still have my Jimny and would not hesitate to get a new model Jimny. However, being now 77 years, I would buy an automatic one!
I have one in Japan. Its perfect for here (highway limit is 80km/hr). Its a 660CC with a turbo so oil change every 3-4000k is a good idea. At 96k km the engine still runs like new. It gets 12km/L.

@@zarakdurrani7584 Yes, auto. Now up to 116,000km and still runs like new. I am surprised how good this little engine is. Got transmission fluid changed at about 75K, but probably didn't need it. Changed the diff and xfer case oil at about 90K and didn't need it. I change the engine oil every 4-5K. Changed the kingpin bearings at 80K but death wobble was probably more the result of the steering box wearing which was an easy adjustment.

@@zarakdurrani7584 I have not really been off road like in the bush in Australia or other countries, but I have been around some 4WD play areas here in Japan and it performed pretty well for stock, although I'm no expert. If I were to do serious off roading, I would definitely change from the highway tires and get LSDs for it.
I have the automatic automatic. it's 24 years old. I got very handi in maintaining it. It doesn't go on the highway here. Not enough speed.
My wife hates it, i love it. 24years old and i drive almost every day. It has 162000km on the clock. You can feel that.

Great review, I'm an owner of a 2015, with foam cell dampers, higher spring rate, steering damper and caster corrected replacement radius arms, good wheel balance and wheel alignment, the death wobbles are all gone, not a single wobble at any speed now. Toss in a good stereo and some sound insulation and they cruise just fine on the motorway.
I bought mine in 2012 brand new, I've driven it around Australia including tassie, as well as numerous other road trips. Consisting get 7.8 to 9lts per 100ks. Had it up to 145km/hr on Stuart hw in the NT legally. 200217ks so far. No sqeeks or rattles. Has a 2 inch lift with castor correction drives beautifully. Amazing offroad especially on the beach.
Such a underrated channel. CZcams algorithms need to step up their game.

I bought one a month ago.
Already installed sound deadening and a kick ass sound system.
No death wobble, drives so smooth and quiet. Though I did fit a steering damper.
I think it lived a nice quiet life, now it's my turn to drive.
I've already fitted a bar and taken it off road, so much fun.

I've recently bought one of these and everything that's been said in this video is true. Here in the UK rot is the biggest problem and I think mine had been parked in a lake for the last 12 months before I bought it.
The outtakes are hilarious and truly showcases how hard narrating/ remembering lines is to do. Great review as always 👏👍

Although not technically called a Jimny, I still have my 1996 Suzuki Sierra. Never had a major issue. Took around Australia on and off-road. An incredible off-road little vehicle! Great entry level 4WD, very affordable near new back then. Can vouch for Suzuki and if anything like the Sierra, I can understand why the Jimnys are so popular!
I have a 2014 Jimny, I have had it nearly 2 years. I love my little Jimny. I use it for around town, off roading and short trips to local towns. It is so much fun to drive, back to basics simplicity. I have had my share of Performance cars and I don't think I have ever enjoyed a car as much as my Jimny. My Jimny is a really nice one, less than 60 000 KMs, manual. It had a bad clutch when I bought it, that was a cheap fix. I fitted some All terrain tyres and an OME 40 mm lift kit and eccentric bushes to fix the Jimny wobble, this transformed the car 40 mm higher and much, much better on and off road. And one big advantage, it is highly unlikely that I will ever got a speeding ticket in my Jimny :-)
I had a 2014 Jimny for some time! I have had many cars in my time and the Jimny was by far the funnest and most rewarding car I've ever driven. It's got something intangible about it and absolutely oozes with character. Your review nails it on the head - that you should know what you are after and understand what this 4x4 is designed for. I hear people comment saying it needs to be bigger or have 4 doors etc... they are absolutely missing the point of the car. It wouldn't be a Jimny otherwise. It is a car built with purpose and true to it's long heritage! A very rare combination in this day and age. I am so happy they didn't ruin the recipe with the the current JB74 model. I sorely miss my Jimny.
I wonder if you have the time to do a Mitsubishi Pajero (3rd Gen)? They're probably the best value proposition for people getting into offroading and overlanding and I don't see too many honest reviews of them. PS, in love with the channel.

Death wobble is simply kingpin bearings/shims which are and easy driveway fix.
Unfortunately they are prone to rust so first thing to do if you get a solid one is underseal the death out of it! Shultz or similar...
It's only rot/rust that lets them down.
Check-
*under bonnet directly behind headlights
*all body mounts to chassis points
*boot floor under rear seats/carpet
*inner wheel arches (behind plastic trim)

Great review. I own a 2014 and not long come back from a 3, 454 km trip out to the gun barrel high way. Some of the trip was on the black top and it went superb. My bus seems to have a heap of zip for the 1300cc. Over taking was easy even with my small loaded trailer. I’ve removed the rear seats, built a floor, fitted a duel battery . I have a 40 mm lift with old man emu springs and shocks ( pro fitted) and front steering damper. On the trip there was too of us with all our gear for 11 days and the zook didn’t complain once. I keep up with a Toyota landcruser and a Isuzu max. The zook was a beast . I sold my Isuzu dmax 4x4 Ute and bought the jimny because the Isuzu was a money pit for fuel and services.. I’m 69 years old and loving this little truck, they are the ducks nuts. I say buy one before they are are all gone.

Mine is awesome, but u are right about the knee problem. I put a piece of soft rubber on the window adjusting panel. Took it to the opal mines and beaches ...and no more soar knees lol.
Of all the vehicles I've owned, the Mitsiubshi Pajero I had and the Suzuki Jimny I now have are the most fun to own and drive - every drive is adventure.

I own a jimny about a year now and it is my daily drive. I bought it because it has always been my dream car. Thing you should watch are indeed rust, any leaks and if and when there is death wobble. Also an important part to check is the clutch pedal assembly. It is has a tendency to break due to metal fatigue. Symptoms of this failure are difficulties changing into first second and reverse. The assembly might be bend or is even stating to crack at that point.
The only death wobble I experience is wheel imbalance. Made worse by off road tyres, diagnosable by speed range. Mine does it at 80-85 kmh, and I'm a bit lazy. Should get it fixed.

I gave up the convenience of the Mercedes W124 for the Jimny. As small as it is, it gives me the confidence that I can get anywhere with it, on any kind of terrain
Possibly the most popular used car where I live. Even to this day, they go for like 6k euro for cars with over 120k kilometers driven.
Btw. the door being so close to the driver is by design, so you can easily put out your head and look at the tires in off-road situations.
So glad you covered the death wobble issue on these. It seems to be an issue Suzuki struggled with for many years on these.
My does it at 80-85 kmh. I reckon it's wheel imbalance. Fine everywhere else up to 140 klicks.
Not an issue just lack of maintenance.
I used to have one of these! I miss it. Same year and kilometres as Janice in the video. Sadly I sold it for $5500 because I was planning on going on a 2 year working holiday in Canada...in January 2020. Have a guess how that turned out! As a city commuter and taking it into the wilderness it was a grand little car. Only two niggling problems were the fuel economy (10L/100km no matter what) and it could have done with an extra overdrive gear for the highway (it was something like 4500rpm @ 110km/h).
All I'd have to say is that anyone thinking of buying a Jimny just has to get into their head exactly what they're getting themselves into beforehand. You must consider all the compromises involved (high cost, poor on-road handling and refinement, low power to weight ratio, tight cabin space) and consider whether you'd be happy to live with the car's compromises before you pull the trigger, otherwise you risk being bitterly disappointed.
I think a significant part of the Jimny's appeal these days is that it's a small car that men can drive around in without feeling like they're advertising to the world that they've had their testicles cut off. It's got that rugged, back-to-basics boxy styling that is very appealing. Most small cars these days (especially microcars which have the same footprint as the Jimny) have excellent ride quality and driving dynamics, but unfortunately almost all of them have been styled in such a way that men in particular won't want to be caught dead in them.
You know what I mean - either they look bloated and ugly, or the car has been quite clearly designed to appeal to women.
I would definitely buy a Jimny again (I'm happy to accept a compromise in driving performance for off-road-ability), but asking prices once I was back on my feet in Australia were absolutely ridiculous and they're still so high that I simply can't justify it. I'm grey importing an all-wheel-drive Suzuki Alto from Japan instead for half of what it'd cost to get a Jimny, which honestly should do 99% of what I used to do with my Jimny but with better on-road ride and handling, better fuel economy. I wouldn't dream of taking it properly offroading though.

I've owned a JB43 for a couple of years. FUN FUN little vehicle that has character.
Guaranteed you will have some issues but since this model has been around since 2000's, you will find resources and parts online for it. This is the type of vehicle that you throw around the bushes and not worry about much as this will take on everything except a very deep water crossing (this is because of weight). One thing you need to make sure that are always in top shape are the suspension to avoid DW,

I liked the addition of showing where to look for ware and tare in specific places around the car in this one lads, hope you continue it, also I was having a bit of a giggle at 4:35. Also Adam this is the safest I know of mate, it doesn’t need all the latest safety gear, it’ll keep you, your one mate with legs, and two mates without legs, and maybe your gym bag safe…. As long as you do don’t hit something and someone else doesn’t hit you. We’ll gloss over the fact that I you said something similar in one your previous review, it might have been the integra one but I’m not sure, but that statement also applies here.

I had an 08 model with about 120,000kms on it when I got it. Sold it at 160,000kms a few years later. Very reliable. Only issues I had were coil packs, leaky valve cover gasket and gearbox tail shaft leak from o-ring seal.
I drove it a lot Sydney to Melbourne at the time. Which it wasn't ideal for, which is why I ended up selling it. But I used it daily and took it all over Australia. Easy enough to work on and great on fuel, easy to park in the city.
Mine was never really taken off road in a serious manner. The autos are way too slow, the manual is good fun to row through the gears.
I would get another, but prices have gone up a lot. Where I don't think they represent fair value anymore. They are quite hard to find in good shape. I sold mine for a bit more than I paid for it after putting 40,000 extra KMS on it. Can't argue with that.
Oh yeah I had the death wobble. And never figured out how to fix it. Mechanic tried to find the problem with no joy either.
Absolutely Right. It just takes you home after an adventure.
I have had my 2008 since Feb 2008. The wobble did appear around 80 but sometimes also under breaking. Suzuki denied any knowledge or being able to duplicate it. It was finally fixed by the Suzuki shop in Nerang. 4wd is entered by pushing a button. I recommend doing this when it is raining. I never had issues on the highway, once you are used to it and mine has zero annoying squeaks but never goes off road. I am 6'2 and bought it because of the headroom and when I look out the front window I am not looking through the Weather strip thingy - something I experienced in the disco I owned.
I have had to replace both cats upper and lower. The upper slowly disintegrated and blocked the system and it felt like driving with a banana in the tailpipe. I also had to replace the radiator as it began causing overheating issues if the AC was turned on.
My clear coat on the roof is peeling and the black trim on the outside where the window goes up and down is deterioratied and exposing metal.
I get roughly 14 km per litre. And the leg against the door issue is really a non issue once you automatically don't let your leg rub there 😁
I love my Jimny and have zero intention of selling and have been asked by mechanics and tyre shop peeps if I want to sell it to them. I usually leave the back seats down so I have better vision out the back window because with headrest on them it partially blocks that vision.
I'm a grump coote who helps at kids to get off my grass, I don't need no tech in the dashboard. Mine is a manual too.

It’s just called Jimny here in Japan, and only available with the 660cc 3 banger. Generally good and popular vehicles, but prone to body rust, more so with later models.

I drove a Suzuki Jimny during an off-road "Jeep" Safari in Cuba. As a Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk owner, I was pleasantly surprised at how responsive and capable the Jimny was. It really made me want to get one, but (sadly) Suzuki has pulled entirely out of the north american market, and these Jimny's were never sold in Canada. If you really want one, you have to pay to have it imported from Japan, and because it was never satety tested in Canada, they also have to be old enough to qualify as a "classic" to be allowed in (minimum 15 yrs old!). 😢

These have literally doubled in value in the UK since Suzuki pulled supply of the 4th gen model into Europe. A 2010s car now costs the same as it did when it was new. Rust is really the only thing to look for - behind the headlamps (and at the front of the front wheelarches, which is the same panel), the boot floor and anywhere near the body-to-chassis or seatbelt mountings. Early ones nearly always need welding but repair panels seem to be easy to get hold of, even complex pressings like the front panel. The increased value means most of them are now economic to fix.

Suzuki never sold these in the US, after the Samurai was discontinued. Apparently someone hated them and faked many tests to prove that they were unsafe and could roll over. That hurt the sales very much, and a few years later, Suzuki as a brand left the US market entirely.

@GoneBamboo there was a market for them. They got killed off by fake news in 1988. They were labeled as unsafe due to being prone to roll over during cornering. Consumer Reports magazine fudged the course in order to make the suzuki more susceptible to roll over during testing.

Very true.. but in true American style many were overloaded driven beyond design limits and roll overs happened ..and american love their law suits ..and suzuki pulled out of us market...yes the samurai was outselling jeep and other usa 4x4 markets and yes tests results were faked to make suzuki look bad... now they can laugh as the usa consumer market wants the jimny....and they can't get them justice is sweet.
owned the previous model, here it was called samurai, loved it, hated to sell it, now i have a jeep wrangler, is also very impractical and very fun, my gf has a jimny same gen as the one in the video, great machine, very reliable and fun

Our son has a 2021 Suzuki Jimny l do agree it is not a practical vehicle but he loves the 4WD and does a bit of off roading
Best affordable offroader, love mine. Ofcurse u have to intall some aftermarket stuff to really enjoy it 🤘
another issue with the mechanics of the jimny, is the transfer case uses a chain from the input to the output so make sure you check that as well though it makes itself known immediately on a test drive, also pro tip, if you wanna do some freeway driving load it up with something heavy lol that will increase your confidence in the jimny as it feels more stable lol
Just to add to this, Japan used Jimmy's were still used up to this day dressed up with mods and having it trailed in any offroad available. That's how tough they are
Mate, i could have never put it better... It truly is like adopting a puppy, somewhat i would like to thing as a very playfull cat where if the head fits, he can go and be anywhere on and off the road, no major complaints on almost 19 years of ownership.

What an amazing vid! Loved the real honest, down to earth view on the Jimmy’s performance. Yes, they are awful cars if you are comparing them to any other car where you would expect it to be comfortable, cheap to run and have up to date mod cons etc. But that isn’t what they were built for. If they were, they would sell like hot cakes. Imagine a Jimny without all the problems mentioned in the video. It would be totally awesome. Marmite cars. Love em or hate em, they will always have a fan base. Me, Im still undecided!

Had a 98 Jimny 1.3 litre and the auto gearbox gave up on me 😞 I loved that car.
I am looking at a 2nd Gen 95 beautiful Jimny, but locally there are only the newest ones. Before I travel to look at it I am trying to see if I would even fit before I do. My question; I am 6Ft 230lbs, would I fit in a 2nd Gen?

The criticisms about the audio and space in the door pockets had me in fits of laughter, but they're a cute little nugget 4WD.
It's a good vehicle i own one for a couple yrs, in stock config it gets tired fast, needs good 2 inch lift and slightly bigger tires.
little 1.3 does everything you need but a 2.0+ in it makes it the best thing since sliced bread.

Excellent review! My wife and I are considering the current model for our next car. I don't know why. We don't go off road and I'm adverse to emotive purchases. To top it off, it will be a second car doing a few thousand kilometres a year running 'round town. I think that the appeal for me is that in so many ways it reminds me of the original VW beetle. Don't ask me why I think that, it's just what I see.

I have owned Samaurais,& am on my 3rd Jimny Brilliant,not fast,but I live in NZ & can get 480 -500 kms on a tank of gas,so no problem,yes prone to cross winds,but simple to maintain,my present Jimny has done 160,000,KS had to replace shock absorbers,& 2 light bulbs,still on 2 of original Bridgestone Tyres,an air filter & a set of spark plugs,cheap motoring
I've owned two Jimny's from new and both had the death wobbles at 80-85km/h. Never bothered me as it's only intermittent. I also put over 100,000km's on them without the issue getting any worse so consider it a non issue unless you don't like the feeling of a wobbly steering wheel on occasion.
what your average fuel consumption because if it true that it consume 10 liters per 100 km for that small engine that would be bad
i own the jimny from 2000 it has a 2 inch lift with 31 inch tyres never had a death wobble with it not even a small wobble i dont know what is actually done for that because it whas pretty much built out when i bought it but when you go for one check the hubs if they are still vacum locked because they brake fast i have manual locking hubs on mine i need to lock them seperatly from outside the vehicle lasts way long one of the first things i should do is replace the vacum locks with manual locks with a lot of offroading they brake pretty fast and ive done 130km to vacation in 1 drive without stops without problems at all so even for long drives its great il just avoid the freeway bc yea fuel consumption these days 5ft gear best to stay around 90km they consume a lot more if you go faster then that
Mine had really bad death wobble when i bought it(price was right, and mint condition underneath and engine bay etc). Got a little better after steering box adjusted, kingpins, wheel bearings and all bushes and ball joints were fine, so next tried fitting an ironman steering damper kit, that helped a little as well. New ironman shocks all around had no effect on wobble.
But the real reason was the 7" steel wheels that had been fitted, to take the wider 215 tires(toyo open country) they had a 15 offset.
Replaced with zero offset ones(Rota Grid X mags) and the wobble totally disappeared, and has not returned in the 4000kms since replacing them.
Fuel comsumption over the last 12000kms averages at 8.7/100, mostly rural, but driven hard using redline revs a fair bit, got a best ever of 8.0 trying hard to see what she could do.(2009 5spd manual, done only 68k)) Usually fuel light comes on at 380-410kms, so definitely a hungry little 4wd, but nothing like as bad as my much bigger and heavier 2006 v8 touareg (16 -18/100).

I had the V6 2.5L Vitara;it had the 5 spd. manual ;sadly I regret selling it;the o.nly problem was a leaking oil gasket ,otherwise it really was a joy .many a time when I was near home,and I was turning left on the way ,which had a slight rise,and a dude would be right on my clacker ,,instead of downshifting to second I would go into 3rd ,andspeed up at exit of corner ,many a time I left the tail gater languishing in the dust.
I'm looking at buying one used. Is 85 000-95 000 on the clock still worth it? Any common issues at that mileage?
Bought mine new in 2012 after arriving in Darwin during the wet and going for a few "slides" in the Toyota hire car. Never looked back. Amazing little "truck." Goes anywhere. Did 1200km road trip with 2 kelpies and a lot of gear. Just don't be in a hurry in that case. If it pours with rain, you stick it into 4 WD! I'm up and down the M1 every few weeks now. Sure, slow down on the motorway if it's really windy. This guy's a bit of a spoilt puppy, I reckon.
I'm buying a Jimny 2012 without the facelift tomorrow from its first owner. 76.000 on it. I will be driving to work 25 km way and back. Besides, I do a lot of fishing so hoping that this will mainly get me through the beach sand and some camping in the bush. Slightly concerned about the fuel economy since my current Nissan Juke 2011 1.6 petrol consumes 6.9L/100 and some owners say that Jimny has a 10L/100 consumption. I checked the car myself it's in a super nice condition but still taking it to a mechanic before buying since I'm not familiar with 4W drive systems. Cheers all and any thoughts are appreciated.

Actually I own one and you do have 2 speakers, 2 underneath the glove box and steering wheel and 2 right behind the front seats at the corners, they are pretty amazing little ofrroading toys but not comfortable at all sadly, loved the video, agree 100% with the conclusions!
Also something interesting to know, where I live at the Dominican Republic they didnt came with either airbags or abs the same happens for Jamaica and many other Caribbean islands.

The jimny is wired for a 4 speaker set up but is only supplied with the two tinny tweeter type in front as you mentioned at least in European markets. The loom for the back speakers is located under the rear seat left hand side in 2007 models you get the bench rear seat in earlier model a much better individual rear seat set up. In my 2007 jimy since I don't use the tiddly boot area for luggage and its used more urban than off road I do like my music I now have a 5 speaker system one of those speaker a sub woofer yeah and amp my jimny is an 1200 watt concet hall. Can't hear the sqeeks rattles or wind noise any more sorry deviated off topic .
Loved the vid. You think Janice is bad on fuel economy I have a sj70 Sierra with 1.3L carbi. Mine isn't too bad but probably get around 12.5L depending how I drive it.

I've had 4 within 4 years all that I've had problems with rust, all have ended up worthless after putting so much money into them, i love them and are great fun to drive on and off road but maybe it's just bad luck that they all gave me problems

FYI I have 2009 Jim y from new. I get 440 klms to a 34 litre fill. After 118,000 klms same economy. If I go off-road for a day, I don’t notice any difference and after a wash, next week back to 440 klms to a 34 litre fill. I don’t know how to calculate litres per 100 klms, maybe someone can tell me?
I enjoyed your video right up to the point you put the outakes in why would you put the outakes in. I'm a jimny owner have one for 11 years now. Yes your on point regarding the death wobble but let's be fair any vehicle with a full floating live axle will suffer from the death wobble scenario. How you fix it on your jimny may differ from another owners though there are about 7 cause which your mate mention some of. The main one is the king pin bearings and the shim kit. The weak point or the place the jimny should be checked at service is the front axle swivel point the seals as its a place of wear in the 11 years I have had mine the king pins have been done twice. Its completely stock. Yes it spends 99% of the time on road but you do know some road are rather crap so you might consider them as off road in some cases. Apart from the usual service item I had one steering rod end joint ( ball joint) replaced. And last year the front disc rotors replaced as they do corrode on the inside quickly which is a known fact to those who off road theirs. There is an on going story between jimny owners that you might change your front disc rotors 4 times before you wear out the front disc pads. When I bought my jimny I was the second owner the jeep just had 52k km after four years... a little old lady owned it before me from new. However little old ladies or young ladies can be ,I've little old men or young men that once safe bet no longer washes and garages need to be doubled checked too if it's not a private sale. Oddly if you fit a roof rack basket in my case a thule 690 xt moab.. sadly discontinued since 2017 .. the jimny will not suffer from cross wind buffering .total weight 20kgs. There is a spoiler on front but that downforce keeps my jimny planted to the road and still returns 500 km to a full tank.. reserve or tank light comes on at 480 km suzuki claim 560 km to a tank 40 litres. Yes in Australia I agree in the out backs that's kinda crap but in the European country I live in that's not bad for the jeep since most cars return 600 km most cars based on a 1.6 to 1.8 litre motor. 86 miles per hour or 140 km may sound slow but for a jimny that's fast.. in a straight line with the roof basket on a motor way I have got my 2007 .. 1.3 litre 86 bhp suzuki jimny to cruise up to 150 kph or just 90 mph... now I would not want to make any sudden lanes changes as of course it going to go over but I'm just saying that with extra 20kg of downforce you can get an extra 4 mph over the stock speed of 86.. but that's not what the jimny is for...sorry I went off topic.. loved the video very informative you were not too critical you made very valid point if you want to buy a jimny ask a jimny owner and don't read the shite some motor journalist wrote to sell their magazine or their pay cheques they only have them for a day or a week or a month.

The majority of our fellow car reviewers seemingly have too high an opinion of themselves to show the mistakes, so we’re trying something a little different.
It's like this. You do a very good critical video there is humour in it already. But I think and it's only an observation...and then put in a mistake bit at end make you look like a plank.. but like I said every one has an opinion..🤪
