I apologize if the communication wasn't clear; I DO NOT know the cause for my experience and all reasoning are speculations at best based on my experience, I am merely sharing them. I am not suggesting it is microphonic or any other reasons as to why I hear a difference. It is a fact that microphonic is in consideration with many market cable lifters and thus why I decided to add sorbothane to my lifters but the primary reason for using sorbothane was for it to stop slipping around and help me better route/organize the cables.*

Both we are retarded thinking this works. lol we are humans with shittest hearing and as we get older our hearing gets worse. We pay more for nostalgia lol get a hearing test and see what you can actually hear
There is another reason to have them. A Stick vacuum slides neatly under them. That is a win.
try painting them pastel colors it makes a huge difference, start with a red shade closest to the amp then orange, yellow, green, blue, ect as you get closer to the speakers,
What? everybody knows that you have to go backward through the color spectrum to lower the interference! JK, I may be not sure they work, but I do know it makes for a cleaner presentation than just having them strung on the floor.
I use cable lifters, whether they make a difference is debatable. They were cheap, $135 bucks for 10 lifters, and they do make the system look better from as aesthetic point of view. If there is any difference, possibly a smoother sound with tighter imaging, the improvements are very small. But it doesn't matter, providing you don't break the bank with them, why not give them a try, it is not going to hurt!🙂

Agree, as long as people are defaulting to science and proven measurements when claiming improvements.
I tried this (cable lifter with some Jenga pieces) with one speaker (left) and did an A/B comparison with the right speaker and measured before and after with REW. I had my wife and two teenage kids participate too and did not tell them what I had done. Everything level matched playing the same content and test tones. I could not tell a difference. Measurements unchanged. My wife thought the left speaker (Jenga) sounded slightly better and my two kids picked the right one (non lifted). I think it had more to do with the room and their seating position than anything else. It is what it is, you be you.
Believe your wife. Women (in general) have better hearing.
If it makes a difference to you then you do you. I don't know why ppl get upset about these things, its not being forced on them. Just enjoy what makes you happy.
The reason why people get peeved is because other 3rd party people can market it for profit and spreading misleading information.

An even quicker & cheaper way to try this is to use the cardboard tubes from toilet rolls. Just quash one end, cut a V with scissors and then restore the tube shape. I tried these for the first time when friend was visiting, and we were both amazed that we heard a clear difference. If you try it and hear the difference too then you can find a more elegant solution - but to check the concept toilet roll tubes work just fine.
If you used the whole toilet roll would that help absorb ground borne vibrations ? 🤔👍
Thanks for the video, if you said a good shielded cable makes cable lifters have less of an audible difference, does that mean those shielded cables alone sound similar to the nicer cables you use,
and would it be better to just get shielded cables for majority of users out there without perfect setups?

I think cable raisers make a difference. Makes your system look cool and makes your uneducated friends think you know about audio even that makes no audible difference.

Good idea, I will try it as well. Not sure about the results, too much dampening in my experience is not good, but the results could vary depending on the strength of the rubber bands as well.
Interesting video Jay. They certainly improve the aesthetics. I’d consider trying this. I’d certainly not belittle your experiences as they’re yours. If you hear a difference then that’s what matters. Some cables do seem more microphonic than others and a hard floor is likely to pick up much more noise than carpeted, so there’s probably something in this.
I even lift my headphone's cables to not make contact with anything :)
I want to share my experience and I want you to just try this:
Get a pair of 5" Tang Band or Fostex or any other good single drivers. Make a tower box and make a speaker hole near the top of the box for the single driver. Before mounting the driver put this in the speaker hole, a 5" diameter piece of tubing (poly pipe) 2" long (it's more a ring than a tube). And glue it in the speaker hole (like a short bass vent tube). Mount the single driver about 20 mm (3/4") above the speaker hole so there is an air gap between the driver and the speaker hole. Use oversize screws and use soft thin sprinkler hose for spacers (around the screws) and compress the hose a little with the screw to secure the driver. Make the acoustic gap between the driver and the box a bit smaller at the top of the driver so the driver is tipped up a little when mounted. A crossover filter is an option that I made but it's very subtle cos the acoustics does most of the EQ (but I like perfection so I have a filter). You will hear a vast difference with the semi open driver to a regular close driver mounting for sure (and in a good way, I reckon and others who heard them reckon). And you might love the difference! So please try it cos to me it's at another level! I want to share this (not repress it like innovations seem to, through copyright). I hear voices in my room that startles me cos I get tricked into thinking someone is in the room when it's in my speakers. It happened several times (lost count). I actually physically turn around when that happens. And sometimes I have to turn it down to find out if a sound is coming from outside or from the speakers. Once I heard a loud low passing jet aircraft and I looked out the window and there was no plane and I was still searching out the window while my speakers were less than a meter from me. And it took several seconds before I realised the jet was the speakers (even when they were that close to me). If this is true (and you love sound) then you would be a mug not to try it. Especially when it's about as cheap as your made cable raisers. And I get so much enjoyment and amazing emersive experience from the semi open, semi dipole speakers and I want to share this experience (not suppress it). They absolutely smoke my reference speakers (B&W 706s) with female voice, piano and brass band. I lent my speakers to an audiophile friend and I asked him 2 questions:
Do they sound "different"?
And he said yes.
Did you like the difference?
And he said yes.
I would really like to try this. A picture would be great. You say make a 5inch hole at the top of the box. Glue in the 5inch pipe/ring and then mount the speaker 20mm above that. So the speaker does not go in ‘the speaker hole’? Sorry I may be a bit thick.

My snake oil idea is that directly twisted joined crossover components sound better than soldered crossovers. 😅 I heard a difference. Soldered joints sound brittle in comparison.

Your best play would have been to cut two thin strips of the Sorbathane adhesive strips across the top of the brackets, creating a hammock for the cable. Give it a bit of slack…this will “float” the cable more effectively. But as you said, the cable you are lifting is critical, so many have shielded cables…it looks like in this video, you’re running very similar cables I am. Lifters definitely make a difference.
Cable lifters are ridiculous if you ask me. I do believe keeping cables away from each other can cut down on magnetic interference, but decent cables should prevent that problem. Never bundle your cables would be good advice. I tried lifting my cables last year and heard absolutely no difference, but I did feel like a fool. 🙉🙉
Very very cool, very very interesting! I have a co-worker that gave me his Fisher STV-649s and I have placed my JBL L112s on top of them so my speaker wires that I made custom myself using 12 gauge wire are already 3 ft off the floor.
And here I am with my speaker cables going through the attic for my living room setup wondering if it is affecting it somehow even though I am not using expensive cables.....
interesting results. I wonder if you have the opportunity to do some C & L measurements with or without lifters? There was a posting a few years ago and this guy had a floor that increased the capacitance of his cables so the lifter worked by reducing it back to where the manufactures design meant it to be as they said it sounded better with the lifters.
since when has any audiophool done measurements? they judge gear based on how expensive it is and how many false claims the manufacturer makes on the website

For anyone who wants to see if cable lifters make a difference in your system. A completely free way to try, is to use a rubber band and 3 chopsticks to make a tripod.
If you build a few and set them up and they make a difference then you can invest in something nicer. If they don't work in your system then you aren't out anything but the 5 minutes it takes to assemble and set up. I hope this helps someone.

I still dont know much about cable lifters. Are they only for speaker cables because most are not shielded? Or can they be used for power cables and interconnects too? Also how do I manage long cables in a small space?

15:20 hmm, I kind of thought it might have an effect with carpeted floors, being static electricity is introduced. During the winter months (not summer) static builds on my carpet in the basement. In fact, I got zapped a lot with my Willsenton amp anytime I touched the on/off knob. I've even added some rubber around it to deviate from the static potential.
I was thinking of experimenting with lifting the cables. Having a dropped ceiling I was thinking of possibly hanging fish line to support the cable off the ground away from the static in the carpet to see if there was a difference; maybe I'll try risers if this works.
I love it..you're going down the deep deepest deepity-deep wormhole of the audiophile black-box...and I'm here for it. Because the super dooper high money audiophiles all use lifters! I need to understand why they do...and I'm glad you're covering it

Hi Jay and guys - it looks to me like the cables you're showing here are the GR Research - that's a good sign! I'm using Kimber Crystal 24 and have them lifted on home-made oak 7" or 17cm lifters and must say, I heard a big difference. Faster transients, more energy in high top end, better instrument definition ans soundstage.
My floor is concrete with oak parquet. In the floor are water tubes for underfloor heating. Also of critical importance is isolating the speakers from the floor.
I'm toying with the idea of getting GR Research, either as main cable or as a biwire option. For the length i need it would still be quite pricey though so i'm hanging back. I dont know what improvement if any i would see over the Kimber Crystal 24. Construction-wise I think only the cotton rope and the RAM distinguish the GRR from the Kimber. Does anyone have any experience of this comparison? All the best, Rob in Switzerland
Hi Jay, I watched your video on cable lifters. I'm putting on my speaker wire pool noodles, it was just to make it look good. I wonder if these pool noodles would do the same effect. I know it won't do anything for me because I don't have a dedicated theater room. If you would like to know about my experiment with speaker wires. Let me know.
So much electrically charged dust settles on the floor 24/7. The audio cables' sheathing and emi/rfi insulation fight these charged dust particles, yet errant charges vector thru these insulations and introduce noise which show up reducing the music's innate joy!

Probably lifters can also help cables stay clean off the floor too or prevent scratching. I guess if you like to switch up cables a lot and keep them in like new condition to sell them it’s cool
you could also just use the cheapest $3 cables from amazon because the only thing audiophile cables do is drain your wallet

Hi Jay, I’ve been using Perspex cable lifters on my main system for decades. I believe that the culmination of many tweets add up. I also use quality cables, power filtering, isolation platforms and feet for each component and speakers. This works for me and I can hear the difference. It’s not snake oil when you have a highly resolving system.
Cable lifters make a little more sense when you understand electricity flows thru magnetic fields. It could be that the cable being on the floor effects the magnetic fields, lifting the cable off the floor could make these fields more even around the diameter of the cable. This would make sense that cables with less shielding see better results with the lifters.
I had my son print some for me with his 3d printer but my first test was with toilet paper tubes. I can hear a difference (minor) but I can't tell you if it is better for worse... Just a little different. Results can be adjusted by how much of the cable is suspended. Also, most of your theory was around vibration but I have read it may be capacitance is the change. Some designs say you ideally need about 3" of lift. Someone should be able to measure this to validate.
So what I'm hearing from this demonstration is that the sound of the cable changes when isolated from the floor, aka lifted. My first question would be what type of material is the floor made from. In this video I see hardwood floors. Are those hardwood floors solid wood and what is the species of wood? Or are the floors engineered hardwood? Are the other floors (your previous customers or workplace) made from the same materials or were they carpet or stone? If they were carpet was the padding underneath the carpet? Are your floors built on a concrete slab or are they laid on top of OSB subflooring? Is there an open space beneath the floor like another room or is the room first level? My point is when super tweaking as audiophiles do, you have to consider every single element involved. I heard mention of different results from different cables, which makes sense. If you believe Sorbothane helps the isolation of the cable why not wrap the entire cable in Sorbothane? Or cover the floor in Sorbothane? If a half inch strip helps that much consider how much of a difference you could achieve with the entire floor, and the cables covered in Sorbothane. I honestly don't know if lifting cables make a difference. None of my cables have ever touched the floor, only because of the design of the rack and stands limit all the power cables , interconnects and speaker cables from reaching the floor. I am very curious to drive deeper into this conversation with more data from the people that hear a difference. That data being precise about the floor and its properties. Without bringing that data into the discussion I would find it difficult to understand a certain point of view on this topic.
What cables are you using? Are those the GR research DIY cables?
My speaker cables are 2 feet long to my mono blocks and they don't even touch the floor. In my case according to your theory (microphonics) these lifters would be a detriment if I used them.
Power cables benefit more from cable lifters than speaker cables. Speaker cables should be short and be in the air, not touching the floor. A cheap highly efficient cable lifter could be made out of several layers of foam maddress and thin cork. Try at least 5 layers and make sure the power cables are at least 10 cm (4 inches) up in the air. I read a comment that Audioquest measured that you need at least to lift cables 6 cm off the ground to get the most effect out of the cables.
Do not forget to do liftning of all things power, not only the cables but also power cleaning and extensions. They should be up in the air and on anti vibration materials. There should be different layers of anti vibrational material with different properties as foam, cork, wood, sorbothane etc have got different frequency properties.
A good cable lifter should let the cables be 10 cm up in the air ant prevent both microfonic high frequencies and low traffic, bass, maschine vibrations as low as 7 Hz. My recommendation is to look at Townshend products for the base layer close to the floor and then put our solution on top.
I use little 3" high blue/grey plastic risers from home improvement stores that are rebar risers for pouring concrete, super cheap and work great, get a bag of 20 for a few bucks, circle based tripod shape with a open half circle at top that holds cables perfectly, plastic is also non conductive like wood and ceramic, if wanting higher than 3" just use a kids wood block underneath but 3" is fine by me, made a very small improvement over my wood floors for little cost.
Well, do you know what's better than cable lifters? Monoblocks as close to the speakers with minimal or no external wiring. Or self powering bi-amp or tri-amp speakers.
If you heard the difference with cable risers, you'll be in for a treat if you use a wire only 10/20cm long.

My Rotel-RMB100 mono blocks are right underneath my NHT SB3 so the cables don't even touch the ground. it was still an interesting watch, have a great day.
Hi Jay. I’m a believer of cable lifters and just wanna share my experience and 2 cents worth of knowledge. You are right, cable lifters don’t have to expensive. I would say that the main thing is to use ONLY wood and preferably maple wood. Actually any wood would suffice. Importantly is to achieve 6 inches off the floor. You can try WITHOUT the insulation pads and lift it at least 6 inches. Silk threads (from wall or ceiling) to suspend the cables would even be better. You can try when you are free ! Thanks.

I just think they look cool on super high end systems and that can be enough. Personally I don’t even have cable management let alone cable lifters
When hifi becomes an obsession. Just put music on and listen to some music After all that's what it's really for. Audiophiles is a name for obsessive music, mechanical & audio behaviour. Listening to your favourite band should be the core of hi fi users. Maybe some ear bud cleaners as a cheap upgrade. If you want get your cables off the floor tack them to the skirting board.
I just pot foam under my speaker cables and it seems to have made a difference. Early days though, need more testing.
I just touched my speaker cables with music playing, and you can clearly feel the vibrations. They need damping as well as lifting!
I bought air-tight rubber balloons that don't deflate, filled them with helium and tied them to the speaker cables with non-vibrating string. The result is incredible, as if the entire audio system has disappeared.

Try separating the plus and minus into two separate cable runs and hear a huge difference!
For me personally, I believe that if your cables need lifters and it changes the sound, they're bad cables. And if all cables are improved with lifters, then that's just an inherent flaw the design of cables and the shielding/isolation they we paid all that money for to have in the first place.

I use doll parts from thrift stores... functional and great conversation starters.
Circumstances are critical. I have carpets at home and realised because my carpets were made from mixed fibres they may interfere wirh the artificial materials of my speaker cables (cable sheath). And when I used some cheap cable lifters I was surprised at the auidable impact.
Does the type of floor make any difference (like wood floor joists in US houses vs a concrete floor)?
Does the vertical height of the cable matter I.e. how far off the floor?
Yeah, I was wondering the same thing. Jay didn't specify the type of subfloor in his rooms. Never looked into cable lifters so I don't know if these things have a standard height or not.
I see a small improvement having power cables off the floor in my room. Carpet over concrete.
Most electrical outlets are close to the floor as there could be electrical wires and or metal pipes under and or close to the floor. Even concrete foundation have rebar in it that could effect the speaker cables. Give new meaning to the term floor noise. lol
If cable lifting works, then each of those elements would matter... ie., materials, proximity, etc.
@@ichigobankai2343 Please explain how metal pipes and rebar can effect the speaker cables? Every decent audio component uses a "metal" chassis to block noise from getting on the signal. Decent cables also use metal shielding which is very close to the conductor. Metal pipes and rebar are connected to ground.
If anything it makes your cables look uniform and neat in an open room setup.

Jay, of course there are some scientific reasons for this, but they're currently not well known.
If you're interested, I can put you in touch with an Electrical Engineer who can give you more information.
Oh, and by the way, cable lifters are a tool. Nothing more. Just like a wrench or a chair, you can spend as little or as much on them as your taste and wallet desires. The materials they're made from make no difference, with one exception.
So, a cardboard tube from a roll of paper towels will be just as effective as an exotic wood artpiece costing thousands of dollars.

can we just use toilet paper rolls for lifter? run the cable throught the center it almost act like an extra choke

I actually use cable lifters homemade out of Jenga wood game pieces for my unshielded speaker cables and they definitely clean up the noise floor to me.

Holy crap! Just tried it using a couple of rooks (made of wood, weighted, felt on the bottom) and it absolutely works in my setup on wooden floors. Big step up in clarity and "liveliness", like a veil of dullness was lifted. So much so that I'm considering adjusting with a tiny bit less toe in. If I were to get this result from a new set of cables for say 10% of the price of my setup and room treatment, I'd be very happy with the purchase. And this was free! Mind blown. Well, I'm on the fence with cable lifters and I decided to use rebar chairs. They come in different sizes and are dirt cheap. Grip-Rite brand at Home Depot, $6.10 for 20 pcs.

I saw and heard a system at a friends house where the cables were suspended .......we did not undo to compare but it sounded nice and without stress ..........even the interconnects were floating and he told me it made a difference in the good way to the music.......
No scientific proof as do so many other things in life make a difference without scientific proof !!!!!!
BUT science grows out of what is OBSERVATION !!!!!!!!!! ....we often do forget that and as so many still believe that .....and state that when it measures the same ........it sounds the same..............resistors, amplifiers, capacitors, integrated circuit boards, interconnects , connectors etc................We know that NO different component does sound the same as long as the electronics are capable to express these differences .............changing a transistor or a tube does indeed not make a big difference or even not at all in a highly processed circuit mass produced and with a lot of FB loops...........but that is not our way of experiencing our passion, the simpler the system , the less processing ,the more only ONE component change will make an audible difference ...... by revealing the flavour of its sonic caracter , just like the cuisine of a chef cook , all is in the synergy and the right amounts of the spices he uses and mixes.........versus the uniform and standard with the taste processed food of mass consumption fast food from MC Donald .......

I tried bubble wrap to lift my speakers cable and it really makes a difference!
You know how in school we learn of how electricity flows in wires as a hose with marbles in it or water. Apparently technically that's not true and really it's the magnetic field surrounding the wire that carries the energy. I'm not a physicist but I guess in theory a changing magnetic field like in AC can interact with dielectric materials like concrete, magnetize it and alter that signal. Like I personally don't think it makes a difference, but I'm open to the idea that at least scientifically it could.
Hey Jay. I went a different route. I have mono blocks which I moved right next to my speakers. I made my own 12" speaker cables out of Kimber 12tc. They don't touch the floor at all. Have you tried this? It sounds fantastic. I am, of course, using balanced interconnects to the power amps.

Good story Jay! My issue is that I use the Elac Reference Speaker cables ( Not too expensive but good quality ) but my speakers are only about 5 feet in either direction from my components and the cables are 15 feet long each. So I've got a rodeo lasso loop going on back there so I don't think it would do any good to try lifters until I get my system into a bigger room...LOL.
Do power chord also need a lifter?
