I have single drivers that are ran completely open, on top of the box and a boxed woofer firing down, onto the the floor. And the bass vent is in a ring, around the open top driver. A coaxial bass vent with the open driver. The $9 open 5" FR driver is also modified with cutaways to simulate a free edge cone. 😅 They aren't "lean" in the medrange cos the woofer warms it up. They are holographic off the scale, being as point source as a 2-way can get and bass with balls, the floor is a bass horn. They are also dipole eakers, combined with point source for the best, most holographic image I ever heard. With only one speaker going it still sounds like both speakers and it can be hard to tell! And it still sounds "stereo". 😅

I think I call bullshit on the power cables... Consider most residential services are aluminum wire from the pole to the main panel, that power runs through a meter and then energizes the buss bars on the panel then through a circuit breaker and finally through what ever type of wire to the outlet, quality of both to be considered, so having a better power cable can not be any better then the worst part of the chain the current had to follow to get there. Perhaps if your are using an isolation transformer than it may have a positive effect in decreasing your noise floor.

Oh no Jay....you should talk about hifi gear...how it sound... made...comparison to other gears etc... Music is our passion regardless who you are your fate...the artist regardless in what language The gear regardless iif its Amercan..European... Chinese... Why make everything so complicated. Do things that you have already done and i enjoy it. I am Indonesian...

What you described is nothing new Jay. In the old days of manual typewriters, except for the covers, all typewriters came out of China are all the same internally when you strip down the covers. They just flooded the market and decimate the old names like Olympia, Royal. Olivetti and Smith-Corona.

I take the ATC 11s as a lower $ all day over the Dynaudio Special 40. I find the Dynaudio "sound" dry and boring as a rule, not a good deal for their $. There's plenty of speakers below 2k that sound better.

@Jayiyagi would you say nowadays is better to get a Denon PMA-1700ne or the old Denon PMA-2010AE which is much much older but "higher class" components? the 2010 + dac is about the same price as Denon pma-1700 which is just over £1000. I will pair with DALI Opticon 2. Thank you in advance!

I like your videos and Danny’s. Beyond replacing cheap parts… So if his approach were to ensure the music stayed in phase as the listener stood up and moved around (just one example), and achieving this required flattening the response to that of a reference monitor, then this might not be my preference either - it would be no hardship for me sitting in the “sweet spot” and experiencing what the designer of the speaker intended! But people who want accuracy-from-all-angles can go to Danny and this is what he does. The differentiation is as follows: The owner has an attachment to their speaker and would not wish to part with them so modifying is Danny’s appeal, as well as the upgrade and new design still being cheaper than an equivalent reference monitor which includes the retail and marketing etc.

When I was in Singapore last week the Elac FS407 was the best speaker I heard. Left the Audio Note system in the dust.

I know this may be a bit radical, a bit woke but try electrolytic caps on FR drivers (if you are using a cap, or caps on that driver). I found that e-caps are way more silky in the highs on FR drivers (compensating the FR klangy sound). And I find ceramic caps to be harsh and gritty on FR drivers. FR driver highs are a bit klangy and the e-caps sound compensates very nicely. 😅

i completely agree about " we have to listen to each amp on our short list in oder to make a decision. my situation is compounded by living in Germany where most of my short list amps are coming from america . ok, i should stop whining and research alternatives

I owned the Børresen X1, but i returned them, because to me they sound a bit clinical. And the soundstage depth was not great. So now i have my Audiovector R1 Arrete speakers back again, and i love listening to music again.

So, Jay, time to commit, the Borresen C1 or the PS audio RF5?

The bacch sp intrests me from what I have read about it. Absolute sound has a good review and breakdown online. Perhaps groundbreaking or perhaps just a kind of imax for the ears that doesn't find its place in the everyday home audio. Fascinating though.

My god. Well done! By far the best coverage of any hii-fi show I've seen. Visual content, excellent. Commentary, exellent. And you didn't shy away from naming a "best of." I do have to ask though: you said the Gauder and the Borresen rooms sounded best to you. But when you described the room with the BACCH sound processor (from Princeton U.), you kind of gave the impression that it was superior to the Borresen room. Am I interpreting your remarks correctly?

I agree with your answer. YES, some of THE best speakers ever designed an made have fallen into disuse and near ZERO availability. For example, I have a pari of Philips 545 MFB-Studio speakers. They feature a piezo electric sensor on each woofer, that measures and corrects the bass waveform generated from the woofer, thousands of times per second. Where there's bass in the music, there's bass in your room. Where there's none... well, there's none. They are complimented by a dome tweeter and a can mid-range. The three drivers are TRI-AMPLIFIED by three amplifiers in each cabinet and fully electronic, low-signal-level crossover. NO power is lost in the cross-over! They are well adapted to orchestra and vocals. ROCK rocks, Jazz is jazzy, and country twangs. I bought them from the stereo store I worked part-time in the late 1970s. They just keep on keeping on! Oh by the way. JBL-200s made way for these Philips speakers in the late 1970s. The JBLs were NOT bad speakers, but their sound wasn't nearly as versatile as the these particular Philips 545s. Vocals on the JBLs sounded "hollow" due to the true horn mid-range. BUT, they really shined on orchestral music! As a professional musician, 80% of our crew insisted on JBL speakers. The balance preferred whatever was used in VOX amplifiers. I respect varying taste. Your milage will absolutely vary!

Having modular speaker parts and crossover parts makes anyone a speaker designer and builder! I reckon a lot of DAC and pre- amp sales could go down. A change in a crossover component would make way more difference tha a 20 grand DAC over a $200 DAC. Way more difference! Speaker voicing is like DAC and component swapping and tube rolling, on steroids! 😅 I design and build speakers and the hardest part is the voicing (by a large measure). Really hard to make them sound how you want. That's why it took B&W 3 years to develop their entry level 606 speakers. I got 706s as reference and my speakers flog them cos the B&Ws don't sound how I want them to sound. Mine sound nearly the same (on axis) but definitely not, off axis. 😅 Mine are dipole open (modified) 5" FR drivers on top of the box and a woofer in the box. More treble at 90° angle and even 180° than the B&Ws.

What about solid core wires? Such as Western Electric?

8:08 It would have a lot to do with the amp (I reckon). I build speakers with cheap drivers and the bass is incredible for $40 woofers! I have an Audiolab 6000A amp and it kicks ass in the bass region for such low power. I didn't even notice the 150 watts less than my old amp with the Audiolad (not at all). So imagine an 8 grand amp for bass. My Audiolab will make a completely open FR driver (just by itself) sound awesome. The bass is still there (just really soft and huski) and the kick sounds incredible on the open driver. And the bass has improved on my completed speakers with the Audiolab (ompared to my $330 AU 200 watt Jaycar amp). And it had great bass mainly cos of the high power. If I run the same open driver (by itself) on a cheap class D amp (without tone controls) I would not be able to listen to the open driver. But with the Audiolab I can. I reckon, in some ways amps make more difference than speakers...but also in some ways, speakers make more difference than amps.😅

This proves cables don't matter for the average stereo system, and only matter when all other equipment is high end.

I really hope these companies are paying you for all the interviews & free promotion you are giving them. Not to mention the beyond professional quality I see no reason not to get paid for interviews even if you are a reviewer. A photographer/cinematographer will happily charge 10k for a promotional video & sharing on his/her socials too. So how you shooting & promotion their interviews to 1000s shouldn't bring monetary benefits for you is beyond me. Hope you start making money with those interviews & take my advice.
