Black, Blue and White Smoke From Exhaust. What It Means.

- In this video I go over three different types of exhaust smoke that a vehicle may produce and what causes them. These are typically black smoke, blue smoke and white smoke. Black smoke is usually made by an overly "rich" condition. In an overly rich condition too much fuel is present in the air fuel mixture. This produces a black smoke that smell like burnt raw fuel. Blue smoke is caused by oil being burned in the combustion chamber or in the exhaust system. When oil either in the engine or the exhaust system it produces a very light blue colored smoke. White smoke, under conditions where there is a problem, is typically caused by coolant intrusion into the combustion chamber of the engine. When the coolant burns it produces steam that comes out of the exhaust as a white smoke.
Some of you may be wondering about air fuel ratio. The ideal air fuel ratio is 14.7:1. That's 14.7 parts of air to 1 part of fuel. So when you get anything greater than 1 part of fuel to 14.7 parts of air then you have a rich condition. For instance if you have a ratio of 14.7:2, 2 being 2 parts of fuel, then your vehicle is running rich. Conversely if you have a ratio of 14.7: .75 then your vehicle is running lean, not enough fuel to air.

Note: As mentioned in the video, this is a very superficial and generic video. It does not cover every scenario and situation where smoke is produced by a vehicle. There may be somethings that can produce smoke and smokes of differing colors that where not mentioned. But, in my experience, these are the most common smokes that can be produced by a vehicle and these are the most common causes of these smokes. This video is based off of my experience and is not a full and comprehensive explanation. Further more there are situations where excessive fuel can cause white smoke. The information in this video doesn't apply to every situation. There can be variations and variations I'm not aware of.
Note: Rich conditions that cause black smoke can also be caused by an air restriction. If not enough air is being introduced into the combustion chamber then an overly rich condition can result. Also, I don't mean to throw you off but white smoke can also be caused by too much fuel, excessive amounts, getting into the combustion chamber.

When I was in High School, I had an old 75 GMC pick-up with a 350 in it. At one point, I had 4 oil fouler plugs installed to try and extend spark plug life. Talk about a smoke bomb, but hey, she kept on rolling until I finally got enough money saved up to overhaul.

I have 6711.7 miles on my 2017 Nissan Murano. Towards the end of last summer I got my first oil change. 2 weeks later my car was smoking very bad from the exhaust. I have had my spark plugs and coils changed. I have had the oil swapped out for new oil twice because it burning out and was immediately back to black. Still haven’t figured out what the issue is. The smoke is white smoke. It do have a strong smell to it. It’s definitely burning oil very fast.
Love the video, 2002 gs300 2jzge non turbo, occasionally white cloud then it clears but once she's warmed up under load huge cloud of white smoke out the exhaust. She hasn't shut off but I recently replaced the header/cats a week ago. I'm wondering if a valve seal is leaking maybe. Would love you feedback, and keep it going.

I have 6 cyl toyota 2H engine 1980 old engine no computer electronics etc and blows alot of smoke. It doesn't smell like coolant but diesel/oil smell. When I rev the engine blows clouds of smoke after idle of 5 mins smoke reduces but again blows clouds again after revving.
There is no blow-by smoke coming out of oil filler/rocker cover also minimal blow by. I removed pcv hose and has minimal pressure build up when running when blocked hole with finger.
Removed all glow plugs and found oil on glow plugs cyl 4 & 5. How would i diagnose the problem?

Hello. I have a question. My dad passed in August and me and him always worked on cars together. I'm his daughter so he always wanted to educate me as much as possible. With that being said I got left his favorite truck. 1992 chevy c1500 extended cap. When I start the truck and let it run it smells like gas alottt and is leaving black smoke spot from running and alot of gas and condensation. I don't believe it's going to pass smoke. Any tips?

Hello, I own a Toyota Opa 2000 model but it gives bad dark smoke when u less it. Sometimes engine gets off when on the road & plugs wet at the head. What could be the problem?
6:08 i noticed white smoke come out of the exhaust when I accelerate at a stop light then goes away when I’m driving, no smoke comes out after that. Then when I stop for a train a bit of smoke comes out.

I have a problem with a 1998 Mitsubishi Eclipse with a 2.0 engine. The engine has been rebuilt, the head is rebuilt and runs fine when cranked up and cold. It drives fine when it is cold but after it has warmed up the transmission does not down shift like it is supposed to when I come to a stop, and when I take off it lets out a huge plume of smoke to where I cannot see the vehicle behind me. I suspect that transmission fluid is getting sucked into the combustion chamber, but I do not know how or what could be bad. The only time it smokes is when I am driving it, if I let it set in the driveway and run, everything performs as it should. The fan starts up and runs when it needs too and stays at operating temperature with no problems until it is driven. Can you tell me what on the transmission could have gone wrong and is letting trans fluid get sucked into the engine?
Hello, my brother bought a 1984 Dodge Ram Protector and every time we turn it on cold or hot white smoke comes out of the Exhaust Pipe and sometimes when giving gas going up the hill too, any ideas?

I have a 91 Ford f350 and alot of black stuff used to come out. It be all on the ground in my driveway and on side wall of my house. It stopped for awhile because I changed spark plugs and wires. It still comes out a little bit. Not much. What causes it. ???????

I have a 99 buick regal ls bout 190k miles i have rotten egg smell at times from tail pipe barely any air coming out as well when its cold if i get on gas ot bucks and jerks bad but once it warms up drives fine rpms are right under 1 on gauge any ideas did plugs wire fuel filter n fuel filter less then 2 years ago any ideas or help thanks

@Barbour's Auto Help '07 Jeep 3.7L 180k miles, white sweet smoke @ tailpipe. Coolant has air bubbles at radiator cap while running. I suppose there is no way to tell if it is just head gaskets or if the block is cracked until one pulls the heads. Correct? Do I do a leak down test on each cylinder?
Also Keith, the coolant level was about 1/3 gal low at radiator and the oil was 1 qt over full. I drained some oul and some of it was water.
What if water coming out tailpipe along with smoke?

I have a Lexus rx300 1999 that has been sitting for 2 years.. Decided yo fire it up again but the sparkplugs were bad.. I changed them and suddenly the white smoke appeared... But it happens sometimes and sometimes not.. I have this issue only at cold starts. The cooland level is ok, when driving temperature stable.. Engine performs very good.. The only thing i haven't done is an oil change.. So i am confused.. Any advice?

Another issue is the fuel consumption is bad , I mean really bad .
Check engine light is on .
If I disconnected the battry for an hour , the check engine light will off for some time , but a long distance trip , it's came on again .
I’d say if the check engine light is on you have an issue that requires diagnostic work be performed. May be best to take it into a shop.
Hi, I am driving a VW Tiguan 1.4 tsi dsg 2013 model. A year ago the car overheated and busted the radiator, i had it replaced and also replace the thermostat and then it started losing couple of months later and then i replaced the Air change over flap. What i have realized after replacing the radiator is that i kept refilling the coolant once every week. I investigated and was told that there is no leak anywhere, so the leak might be going into the engine, okay i drove the car for couple of months still refilling the coolant every week, then the car started having problem with starting in the morning but when it's hot it was starting fine. I notice a leak on the water pump and had it changed, then just after changing the water pump the car started smoking white smoke and EPC light came on and disappeared, now there is just an engine light on. Could it be the head gasket or turbo?
2005 Hyundai Accent . Recently has started having light blue smoke coming from the back end, AFTER it's been idling. At the very least after it's been running and heated up. It smells like burnt oil. So obviously from your info it's clearly an oil situation. I'm just hoping it's not too serious. & I'll have to fix it myself so that's my hope, that it isn't too serious. To be fair I unfortunately ended up neglecting to check the oil for like a month & when I did it was in desperate need to be filled\changed. I almost thought I had to have had a leak because it was topped off a few weeks prior. But there has been no oil spots at work or home driveway...any thoughts? Much appreciated regardless 😊

Blueish smoke can also be caused by the automatic transmission vacumme module. It'll suck tranny fluid into the engine where the suction comes from.

I have white smoke coming from gmc yukon 6.0 does not have sweet smell it doesn't have egr cooler that I know of.????? And it's not over heating no signs of white foam in crank case or radiator.also the radiator holds pressure for a while after it gets to operation temperature. Could it be a sweating of exhaust it get lite but not going away.

2016 Chevy trax. Put oil in it this morning and went to drive it. Few minutes later whitish bluish smoke coming out a LOT, (smoked up a whole road). When starting to drive after being stopped at a light, doesn’t pick up right away, if I went over 45 mph car started to jerk.
After you put oil in it did you check the oil level on the dip stick. Not being "Mr. Smarty Pants". Just wondering.

Thanks for the video. I'm having trouble with my dodge ram 1500, 3.7L engine. I just got done changing all my spark plugs and cylinders 3 ignition coil, still acting up. Than I change my upstream and downstream O2 sensor on the driver side still blowing out white smoke and running ruff. I did notice that there is another Cadillac converter on the Passenger side too. So I have 4 O2 sensors on my truck but only changed the driver side. Idk what's the problem man like I said it's still running rough like it's about to die out. I hope it's not a blown head gasket.

I have a 2010 maxima, I have the blue smoke at first crank like you described but also while I'm driving, occasionally it will let out a large cloud of smoke and sometimes sputter with black smoke, especially with acceleration. I've been told piston rings and valve maybe need adjusting or replaced. Curious as to your opinion or anyone else in the comments. TIA

Mine is a mini cooper r56 n14 2007. So the engine was rebuilt, died and rebuilt again. Same guy, all forged went it. Came back to me smoking whiteish smoke but with oil in the tailpipe. Race exchuast, bigger intercooler, remake bigger turbo.. Bigger air intake system. Anywaz it starts and smoke stright away and plenty off it. Doesn't go away. I changed the coils and also the plugs.. The rocker cover was changed some time ago.. The engine after rebuild done no milage. The head was done and all setviceable parts. New pistons and rods. It has a catch can and the turbo was remanned "a different guy" the pistons that went back in forged but slightly used. These would or at least I said need new rings. I need to check the pcv system and venos solinoid as when the rod failed before perhaps bits got into the venos solinoid and this was over looked. The guy who rebuilt couldn't fine the issue and after he had the car for six months I gave up. He said he had pressure tested and that all fine and smoke test and that fine. How much smoke can come from a bad pcv system on these? As its blowing alot.
Not at all familiar with mini. Oil separator comes to mind though. I know you have a catch can but if the separator is bad it can overwhelm the can….at least this has been my experience on turbocharged mustangs. Not sure if this helps or not. As mentioned I’m not at all familiar with mini.

I have my Moms '07 Saturn Vue that started smoking and had that sweet smell but never got hot. Then a few months later it was puking smoke, burning oul, and smells like burnt oil. Still does not get hot or over heat. I am female and have ordered parts from the heads up. Did order piston rings just incase, but would hate to go down that deep into the engine. Ii got a 2002 Chevy pos S10 4x4 4.3 V6, so my sparkplugs keep getting drenched in gas, my buddy did replace the spiders and fuel regulator I have replaced the O2 sensor the knock and crank sensor I'm in the middle of trying to get the cam sensor put in distributor but it's being a pain to get in but it is pooring gas out the side of the llentum so I think it's a injector because the cam sensor isn't reading right and pcm probably in limp mode and the regulator I've seen dump gas when you turn the key off as well but man it's smoking out the whole block really rich for like 5min then dies and I have to pull all the plugs witch all are soaked in gas, here's what I'm worried about I changed my oil and got 16 courts , 4 .5 of oil and 8qts of gas I hope my rings didn't get messed up but how in the heck does 8 qrts of gas get in the oil seems like can I have maybe got the return and the vapor lines wrong when I changed my fuel pump? Just seems like a lot to just be getting by the plugs please any info would be muchly appreciated I have dumped so much money in this thing but I'm bout to burn it to the ground I been working on it for 3 months now, also I've heard that it can be your alternator andnot really be the cam sensor, this all started when my harmonic balancer spun off the rubber part but timing is pretty much set on its own I think tdc on one and point rotor at the 6 on distributor right? Also my clutch went out on my ac so I got a smaller belt and bypassed it but I heard that can mess up the voltage in places, I'm getting 10 volts on one of the three wires going to my cam sensor but I'm supposed to get 5 on ach side and negative or ground in middle any thoughts on this ty sorry so much

on my 1996 volvo 940 turbo, it started giving of a grey-ish smoke that is smelling like extremely risch on fuel, i hope the head gasket ain`t the problem, swapped it last year, but the ppm and hc is high and my lambda at idling is at 0.85, people here, is my lambda fucked or worse the head gasket

No engine codes come out but it's doing it everything I start the car any time and only the smoke comes out when it sits there for awhile it's killing me any advice would help

Ohh it is exactly like that so it’s OK. Should I use a fuel additive or oil additive on Mini Cooper? I do not drive it that much in the winter and the smoke comes out and by the time I let it warm up and pull out of the driveway it’s gone. Thanks for excellent video.
If it’s not broken don’t fix it. Vehicles are supposed to smoke a bit upon start up on cold mornings. That’s normal if the smoke goes away after it warms up.

Hello, thank you for the video but I have a question about my smoke situation if you wouldn't mind giving me your opinion. I have a 92 Geo Tracker 1.6 qtr 8 valve and when I bought it I noticed the oil level was high. I did drive a few hundred miles with the over filled oil but I replaced it yesterday. Anyways my smoke is defiantly oil related and I noticed (even after the oil change) that after I drive it at higher speeds ( 60-65mph) and then come to a stop it starts to blow a bunch of smoke but clears up after a few second after I start moving. It also doesn't seem to smoke while driving slower around town. Any thoughts on what it could be from? Thanks
Possible that the pcv valve is faulty. I'd start by checking it.
Hi. My question is that I have a 98 Chevy Malibu and it needs a heater coil. I parked until I got the part si it's been parked roughly a year and I cranks it drove to the store less than a mile for gas and it started smoking and had very little compression. I can't remember what color smoke exactly thinking thick white smoke. Could that bee from sitting or blown head? Thanks for taking time to read this

Can a o2 sensor cause white smoke on a honda passport? Have a code for that but also have overheating.
Usually if smoke were to be caused by a faulty O2 it would be black. But weird things happen.
l have a 20 year old camry 200, 000 miles , l get a white smoke perhaps slighly blue not sure, from the exhaust when l first start it in the morning, it only lasts the first two minutes of driving then it goes, more smoke comes out when l put my foot on the acceleator . l only get the smoke on the first start of the day, if for example l start the car again later in the day l wont get the smoke. What do you think is the cause, harmless condensation, coolant leak or oil leak, l have my car parked outdoors under a roof , its not that cold overnight 8 degrees celcuis or 46 degrees fahreinheit but it does rain a bit . l have not noticed any drop in the coolant level in the car. l have been burning more oil then normal but its an old engine
Maybe normal water vapor. Maybe your valves are leaking oil. I’d say if you don’t have other symptoms and you’re fluids are full roll with it. Check oil and coolant. While that’s my opinion it’s always better to have a tech look at it. I could be missing something.
i have white smoke coming out the passenger exhaust. What I did , installed new valve seals, Cylinder 2 no compression so I changed the the exhaust (they were chipped off edges) and intake valves and seals on cylinder2- compression is 8 on dial, new fuel injectors, new head gasket, new spark plugs, new O2 sensor on driver side, new pcv valve. The car was sitting for almost a year. Could it be old oil or old fuel causing?

Hello i have a problem with white smoke and a really bad fuel smell, only happens when the car has warmed up say after three or four miles she won't regen also but i have found the battery to be failing i have also changed the heater plugs at 100.00 pounds each (the sensor type on mine) so that is in the regen if these fail it also will not regen, but the smoke i can not pinpoint at this time any help would be appreciated, the smoke will not stop until i cool the car down then the same thing all over again. good vid by the way thanks.

My 2011 Chevy Suburban have a camshaft and lifters problem. The scanner read a cylinder 7 misfire. I have heavy smoke coming out of the tailpipe. You can smell the fumes. Now the smell got worse and smell like a burning smell now. What could i do to fix this?

It’s hard to say without performing a pin point test. Have you had the misfire taken care of?

I have a 1963 Avanti 289cc that has been sitting for a long time, I drained the oil then put in some WD40 and let it sit for a week, i turned it over a couple of times with the coil disconnected, the engine had ran previous blowing white smoke from exhaust, I then removed all spark plugs, cleaned them, reinstalled them, drain the WD40 and put new oil back in. The moment I started it, it blew out very black smoke on the Port (left) side, Hopefully it's a carburetor or fuel filter problem. like I said, it was ok prior to me changing oil. But why just the one side?

If it was the pcv how much smoke? That's what I can't figure out. If the pcv is bad. Can it be alot of smoke or just a little.

2013 Nissan with what looks white. Thick on start up but dissipates. Nothing while driving down road, except one time after accelerating from a stop sign. No rough idle or not rough running. Thoughts
What kind of Nissan is it? What size engine?
Murano 3.5L V6. Coolant levels seem stable, burns small amount of oil. Engine runs smooth, no knock or ticks. PCV valve replaced along with 3 of the 6 plugs. Thanks. Mechanic said likely rings, but didnt explore much.
, My 99 Cadillac Eldorado Northstar does the same. A lot of white smoke only on startup. Lasts about 5 mins. Runs fine and no more smoke after that. Head Gasket? I hope not.
Same is happening with my 2018 nissan pathfinder..it's lots of white smoke when I start the car,stop the car or accelerate fast...no check engine light,car isn't heating up,nothing comes up on the reader...car has very bad pick up and it stutters a bit here and there...the best day it's fine with no smoke..how could this be?
I see bellows of white smoke from my tailpipe BMW 320d, but I don't smell any antifreeze. I would say the smell is more like exhaust. But I still suspect a headgasket. What do you think?

@@BarboursAutoHelp Looking at the expansion tank, it seems very little coolant has been lost. I tried K-seal ultimate, followed the instructions on the bottle, idled the engine for 10 minutes but still the white clouds keep coming from the tail pipe. One thing I did notice was the top radiator hose got hot, but the bottom radiator hose stayed cold. Also when I turned the heater on in the cabin, no heat came out.
It may not be coolant. Sometimes other things can cause white smoke. I would not make a repair unless you are sure of what the problem is.
@@BarboursAutoHelp Hi After calling a mechanic out, he feels the Turbo has gone as oil is being forced into the exhaust system. The cost of repair is over £2000 so he adviced me to scrap it or sell it on ebay. It's a shame, the car had only done 60,000 miles and very good condition. It seems that when I bought the car from a garage, they may have not done the oil change and simply stamped the service book.

White smoke, that smells like fuel, also can confirm fuel in tailpipe. Also have a vacuum leak. I have done coils, plugs, and pcv valve already, still same issue persists. :(

@@BarboursAutoHelp yeah, I give it a few min to warm up and the white smoke goes away. Just recently it started to show some blue in the smoke too (also goes away with the white smoke).
The other new thing, it has started to rev really high until the engine gets warm (sometimes). I would have to drive it right away because the high wine of the engine, to try and force low rpms when in gear. I read that it could be a vacuum line that is leaking causing it to rev that high. Again when warm everything runs fine.
It is an old 1987 Pontiac Firefy (Chevy Sprint) Parts are cheap but harder to find. Guessing a new head gasket and valve seals are need to updated soon. Cheers
