    The current engines are actually more or less correctly scaled with the actual ship (maybe just slightly too large, but that’s just a limitation of the medium) it just looks weird because the engines on most previous LEGO X-Wings were way too small. This one’s engines are the closest to correct we’ve ever gotten in LEGO. Also you had a good point about the wings, they might be a bit too short which makes it look a little weird. Plus R2 is tiny which also makes the engines look bigger than they actually are.

      Honestly, it’s a shame that printed pieces aren’t standard for every Lego set. Lego is selling premium priced products, especially when it comes to their SW line. The fact that they use stickers doesn’t reflect that.

    • @Mephiles_007..
      @Mephiles_007.. Před rokem

      @@zennar1537 Well Printed pieces cost money and LEGO can not keep up with printed pieces in every set they have other sets to do and lego does 100+ plus sets a year and they ain't cheap and yes it is a premium product but you buy it for the building experience wnd it's not about the printing/sticker pieces all the time and I get what your saying I also hate stickers and something I don't even put stickers in the set but you admire the lego designer's hard work in the set not the stickers

    • @derkaiser9881
      @derkaiser9881 Před rokem +13

      @@Mephiles_007.. Almost ran out of breath reading that. God damn.
      To expand on your points:
      It is a bit weird to assume everyone is buying a UCS kit for the build experience. Not everyone is doing that, some people just want a nice display model, and some people are younger and want to "swoosh" it around their room (of course depending on the kit). I'm sure some people out there purchase UCS kits for the build experience, but to that I have to ask--would it not be a better build experience to work with printed pieces over stickers?
      Lego does a lot of sets a year, but they're also an 11.8 billion dollar company selling a premium product. They're cheaping out and I don't like that. Sell me something expensive that's worth it, don't half-ass it.
      And finally, you can admire a designers work while being annoyed with sticker usage. I do quite like how the X-Wing looks, but I don't like that it requires sticker usage on critical areas. Do not forget there is nuance to this sorta thing. UCS, I'd argue, is primarily aimed at adults. Adults who are absolutely going to be more critical of smaller details.
      TL;DR - not everyone buys UCS kits for the build experience, if they are printed pieces would make for a superior build experience. You can admire a designers work and dislike the inclusion of stickers in a premium product designed by a multibillion dollar corporation.

    The thing that I love about lego. Is that if you had a massive bin of Legos, you could build this without buying the set. Yeah probably alot of it won't have the right colors. But that could be cool too. Maybe you could call it a " Jaku x wing scrap fighter " and pretend that it was put together of different crashes x Wings from different squadrons. The only thing you'd have a hard time finding would be the windshield piece. Idk where you would find a windshield piece like that unless you just got that piece from lego. But that's what I used to do as a kid. I had a huge bin of Legos and some that used to be star wars sets. So I had some of the cockpit pieces laying around and I ended up finding the old instructions and started building the ships. Found most of the right colors because of how many Legos I actually had but some of them were made of lots of different colors and although it wasn't cannon or seen in star wars like that. I was still playing eith a star wars ship that I wasn't playing with before I built it. Legos are amazing

I'll have the opportunity to compare the 3 of them soon! :) As for the wing length, I think that is easy to mod if you wanna try (I might). The studs on the side I think is a nice touch - sort of a retro nod from a set heavily depending on SNOT.

    I think that is WAY better than the previous UCS, that old one looks really blocky and dated. Shame it´s missing the landing gear, but still that is by far the best looking X-Wing what Lego has done. And looking the bottom of the set you can easily add landing gear if you like so.

  • @MCLegoboy
    @MCLegoboy Před rokem +2

    Having seen that they got the angle to go down the whole length of the thing and not just the standard big hinge bricks making these sharper angles, that makes a huge difference in my opinion of the set because the official images really don't capture that detail. One quality of life thing with the set that I would change though is the nose, and not so much the size, but the color would be better if it were gray. The X-Wing is a difficult ship in Star Wars to replicate colorwise because technically it is white, but there's so much grit and grime slapped on it that it looks more gray, and so there's really just no way to emphasize that since LEGO never decided to expand their Very Light Gray palette that was only really relegated to tiny pieces in obscure mosaics and a few Bionicle sets, but had the nose been gray, that helps differentiate it from the rest of the ship, and perhaps that sloping would have been more noticeable and really helped sell it through the official images. I don't know. It's not a set for me, but I have a greater appreciation for it than what the official images conveyed. If ever I were to get a UCS X-Wing, it would probably be the original from 2000 if I could get it at a decent price. That's just the era of LEGO Star Wars I enjoy most because it's what I grew up with, and not to knock a number of sets these days, but we've left the realm of Star Wars made of LEGO and just gone into Star Wars replicas that happen to be LEGO, even the playsets, and a lot of charm is missing in newer sets, despite how incredible they look, that is felt in most 15+ years old LEGO Star Wars sets, including the UCS X-Wing from 2000, dreaded STAMPs and all.

    I do think the one thing that people forget is that you're not building a traditional model set. its LEGO, if you don't like the wing length or the lack of landing gear then modify them on your own! I will personally be redesigning the wings on my X-wing to be a few studs longer, and I might add landing gear but i'm not sure yet. Don't let the build get in the way of you making it the way YOU wanna make it, you can always change it back anyway.

    What I'm looking forward to see is if anyone sticks the larger R2D2 head on this set from the 30611 polybag - the biggest issue I have with the set with the S-foils out is how invisible and out of scale R2 is, and I can't help but wonder if too big would be better than too small - on par with the engines - what I think this set really needed was a new 3x3 R2 head and some slopes/arches for the tops of his legs, rather than a minifigure (which could just be included on the stand)

  • @nz.Frequency
    @nz.Frequency Před rokem

    Looking at the wings I think it is the ratio of wing to engine that throws it off. With the model there you can see that the length of the wing is around 3x the diameter of the engine intake. With the lego intakes being 6 studs then that would make the distance from the engine to the wingtip 18 studs. But it looks to be 15. Which would have been perfect were the engines 5 studs but I get that would have been awkward to do. The other limiting factor would be the angle of the trailing edge of the wing with what angle plates they have. If you make them longer then you have to either make the starting edge longer or the outside egde is shorter with the same angle. The only 2 things that really bother me are the shaping of the nose and the lack of landing gear. Even the play sets have a nose gear so little disappointed that they didn't add any for a set of this price and when it's branded as "ultimate".

    Not sure how many others out there feel this way, but I would much prefer minifigure scale starfighters for UCS sets. I get it that you get more "wow" factor and more details with a larger model, but they take up too much display space and it bothers me that they don't match the scale of the larger minfigure scale UCS sets like the Falcon or AT-AT. Obviously you can't have larger capital ships in the same scale, but I think it would be good to have as much of a unified scale as possible among the UCS sets. I'm 47 and only started buying Lego collector sets recently, so I don't have very many sets. I have the UCS AT-AT and I'm considering the UCS Falcon and the Razorcrest. I've been thinking about getting some starfighters to go with them and at this point I'm most likely going to end up getting some MOC minifigure scale fighters. They will cost me similar money or maybe more than the UCS fighters, but they scale better (and in some cases look better) than the UCS sets which is more important to me. I would rather buy official UCS sets with plaques and exclusive minifigures, but they are just way too large imo. I really hope Lego considers smaller UCS starfighter sets going forward, but if they just released this new X-Wing I imagine they plan to continue to do the other starfighters in the same scale.

    Nice review, I plan on getting this set. I hear the complaints about the engines. I think they look closer to the actual X-Wing but the problem is that they stiffed on the wing length. I'd say it could almost be perfect if they were about 4 studs longer at least. Then the nose, man, when will we ever get the correct nose slant?! But the more geometrical sides are a win for LEGO.

    No idea why this is getting so much hate. It looks awesome. Not everyone managed to pick up the first two. Plus, it’s from the original trilogy which is obviously the best set of Star Wars movies with the most iconic ships. Will defo pick this up at some time.

    Biggest problem I have with this model is there are more models that need a new UCS update / version. B-Wing, Imperial shuttle, Tie interceptor, Tie Advanced, OR ones we haven't seen yet, U-wing, The Ghost, GR-75 Transport, Hammerhead or even an updated X-Wing T-70 (maybe in Poe black).
    While I dont dislike this kit (aside from the engines) I just feel Lego could have waited a few more years before an update and given new life to kits that are not on a 3rd version.

    Good review, particularly the comparison with the previous version. They are both out of proportion, which is perplexing because it seems like making the wings longer would have been a simple solution. I wouldn't mind building this set, but the end result just doesn't seem worth the price.

    00:47 TBH I would rather had a new UCS Tie Interceptor than another x wing. Would’ve tied in better with the 40th anniversary of ROTJ given that it was the first appearance of the Tie Interceptor. That or I really wish they’d do a remake of the B Wing, again because it was only featured in ROTJ.

    After watching this I’m even more skeptical of SBS‘s opinion on the prices of lego sets. It’s a great review, and I appreciate that we get reviews of sets before the become available to help us better inform our purchases, but with Lego “gifting” the sets to the ambassadors they’ve lost some of their touch with those of us who must budget our lego spending (due to money, space, or other). Still a good review and a good looking set.

      Well... price to part ratio has actually gotten better after 10 years. We can argue the price of the 2013 set being crazy but can't complain too much about the 240 price tag when talking about 2023 prices. You have some crazy expensizlve sets these days

    Easily should have included a brickbuilt R2 to make him in scale. I could be wrong, but to me a 3x3 (not sure if that exists though) or 4x4 dome for his head rather than the minifgure's 2x2 would be much better scaled. That way they could still have included the minifigure too. For a UCS set, slapping a minifigure R2 in a gap feels VERY low effort.

    • @JaviBee
      @JaviBee Před rokem

      4x4 would look way too big though and then you’d have people complaining about that instead of just getting a nice minifig. 3x3 would be the ideal size probably but there aren’t any elements that could make a dome that size in Lego right now

    Honestly... The original Ultimate Collector's Series X Wing looks absolutely hilarious in comparison.
    I have seen someone make a complete ground up rebuild of the new one, basically a MOC at the UCS scale/size, and it leaves the official set in the dust.
    No gaps between the wings, much better geometry of the entire shape of the fighter as a whole, more detailed greebling, no holes in the sides of the fuselage when the wings are open... But I worry an official set at that level would cost $500. 💀
