Hi friends, happy Thursday!
Welcome to the Dark History podcast. This guy was one of my favorite cartoon characters ever, but it turns out he’s actually based on a super creepy villain. Today we’re talking about Rasputin, the man who was possibly responsible for the fall of the Russian monarchy. He was rumored to be able to speak with animals, have magical healing powers, and even… be immortal?
I appreciate you for coming by, and tune in next week for more Dark History.

Hi Bailey! Everyone mark your attendance for history class! 🩷

Here 😊
We appreciate Bailey's dedication and hard work over the years. She has genuinely proven herself to be one of the most reputable storytellers out there.
I’ve actually heard a lot of factual inaccuracies from many of these (I have the credentials to say this) but I still really like her content, and how it encourages people to enjoy history.
@@chloetheawkwardghostSuch as..?
@@chloetheawkwardghostagreed. But I think it's because Google lies a lot and she always mentions that she uses google for all her research.
@@lyndzsea8213I feel like I've heard her say, when you look on Google it says this, but she mentions that people help her research and lists historical consultants.
@@CaityDorkin the sugar episode (most recent) she mentioned king Henry said he killed all his wives (beheading) which he didn't. He only beheaded 2 of them 😊 I still love and watch every single post of hers though and most of it is accurate. I love Bailey 🖤
I hate that I always confuse Rasputin and Rumpelstilskin when I hear their names 😂 Really throws off my history vs fairytale knowledge
That's freaking hilarious 😂😂
This is great!
I’m glad I’m not alone in this 😅
Lol
stop it because i looked at the title thinking she made a typo😭😭
This should be retitled as, “Bailey Sarian Roasts Rasputin for an Hour”
😂😂😂
You could do an entire dark history episode on the Romanov family alone. So interesting!
PLZ I WOULD LOVE THIS
or any other royal family ( the tudors etc)
Rasputin is #1 on the list of people I would not want to meet in a dark alley. Every photo of him at the time is so creepy, chills up my spine kind of creepy.
Same! I always avert my eyes when his pic pops up 😂
He's super creepy 😂 lol
I find him very alluring, love long dark haired men and as a teen was enraptured with his photos.... but his body odor was apparently so foul and adult me could never 😂💀
@@breakfastattiffanys741 oh heck no u was attracted to Rasputin sheesh he's the thing of sleep paralysis nightmares and u talking about his odor is the only factor of not being with him? Lol
Bailey: mentions she wants the three books for her bday. Ends up with like 100 copies of each one 😂
I thought the same
😂❤
Yep 😂
What if everyone thinks this so no one gets it for her 😢
The show ‘The Great’ does a great job at depicting him.
side note: pleeease do Vlad the impaler. Now that dude is insane
Please do a Dark History on Ivan the Terrible and/or Catherine the Great. Pleeeeease
THIS!!!!!
I believe she did Catherine the Great on MMMM. Not so sure or I confused that to Queen Mary. 🤷🏻♀️ whichever, would still love to watch as those are interesting topics.
Yes Ivan the Terrible. He's Ivan the Boneless right? I've been watching the show Vikings and he does some really messed up stuff like super messed up. He was pure evil, definitely!!!
@@dallaswilliamson9373Ivar the Boneless was the Viking ruler, and Ivan the Terrible was the first Russian tsar - they are two different people
She did do an episode of Catherine the great. The episode is called Catherine, cleopatra, Jackie and Yoko 💖 @shnoots
Fun fact: "Rasputin" (Распутин, pronounced "rahz-POO-tin") translates to "he who has strayed from the path/way". (Further, "Putin" means "man of the path/way.") I remember reading that Rasputin wasn't born with that name, but rather he CHOSE his surname on purpose, which honestly would track if true. There are some great Russian surnames out there.
He was sooooooo edgy ☠️
Вы правы )))

Fun Fact about Maria Rasputin - She ended up moving to LA & is buried at Angelus Rosedale Cemetery in Los Angeles.

“You can smell him through the picture” sent me 😂😂
That took me out too 😅I’m still laughing low key
I was obsessed with the Romanov family and read many books about them and what eventually happened. I truly believe that if the mother would have never met him, they may have lived.😥 He was evil incarnate, but was able to fool many, sadly
I also think that.. he had so much influence on Alexandra. I feel like she was so desperate, she would have done anything to heal or help her child and that's why she became so close to him.. I mean wouldn't any mom do anything for the safety and well being of her baby?
It's just very sad what happened to them, they didn't deserve it 😢
I place more blame on King George V who was afraid of the possibility of a revolution happening in England if he gave his beloved cousin and his family asylum than Rasputin. Rasputin or no, the Bolsheviks were going to assassinate the royal family to keep them from being able to claim their "birthright". Saying that Rasputin was the deciding factor in their deaths ignores colonial Russian history, and the pressure cooker that made revolution inevitable long before he came into the picture.
If Rasputin really had some psychic he would have told them they needed to go on a sort of permanendt vactaion.
The Netflix show on them is amazing
@@ajaylet9563what’s the name of the Netflix show ?
Anastasia has always been one of my favorite childhood movies too. I remember learning about the true history of Rasputin in my middle school Social Studies class. It's definitely an interesting story!
In The Dark of the Night is such a great song! I love that movie too
@@mirny1509 It's honestly my favorite villain song!! Total hit 👌

Hey Bailey ! The P in front of pneumonia is silent in English, but in Greek, Pnevnomes (spelt phonetically here, in Greek ‘πνεύμονες’) means lungs ! Πνευμονία = pneumonia
The comment about whether cults where a thing yet made me realize I would LOVE a Bailey episode on the Greek cults. Like the cult of Athena and all that!
I’m super obsessed with Russian history. You should do one on Cathrine the Great! She was wild! I read her memoirs n everything.
She did
I mean a FULL episode of her on weird history
She really was wild. She is fascinating!
She is highly fascinating & major reason the world is going on now.
Bailey! I would love it if you would do a native American series for the month of November. I know you've done quite a bit (Andrew Jackson), but I feel like there's so much more to learn. Especially in regard to all the missing native women and girls.
Agreed!
Yeah, here in Phoenix it's disgusting how many native women and girls go missing but no one seems to care other than the immediate family. And even they have trouble being able to get and keep the word out about their girls. It's like nobody sees or hears them. I hear them though and I see them and it haunts me. Please someone step in and find the truth. Whoever's doing this has gotten away with it for so long because the people with the resources won't investigate to the extent needed to find these girls and the people who care enough can't afford to get close enough to the truth for it to make a difference. I'm not native but I am a survivor and I know what happens to girls that go missing. Sometimes the dead ones are actually the lucky ones.
Yessss!!!
It's true I would love her to bring attention to this with the size of her audience and platform. I am curious how one would be able to research this since there's such little coverage 😢😵💫 I am sure it's possible, I'm just wondering because I'd like to know too 🤟💚💙
Yes!!!!!
Loved Anastasia. It was a beautifully animated masterpiece that deserves its own video because Disney was shaking in its boots over that one. And I also held onto hope that she was out there somewhere until my dad was like "you need to see this random history channel program" and it was about how they had found her body. He had so much beef with this children's movie and that was why. Little girls would be watching and thinking their new found favorite princess was alive and well. And she was dead.
I never believed that was her. my uncle Luciem rode for the tzar and he always swore that some of the villagers snuck Anastasia out , he had no doubt that she got away
@@lisolette1then what became of her is the real mystery
The movie came out in between when they found most of the bodies and when they found the youngest two. Maybe look it up and you’ll understand better. 😊
Mad respect here from a Russian. This is one of the best retellings of this story I've heard, including some of the sources in Russian. The historical context of this, ehhhhh, character is RICH, and all the weird stuff connected to him feels more fun when actually told accurately.
I'm Russian too and I adore Bailey...she's smart and funny af! :-)))
there is a diary of Vladimir Mitrofanovich Purishkevich and “how I killed Rasputin”, the story is described in more detail in the first person

My mum taught me about Rasputin when I was like 4. Sparked my life long obsession with the Romanov family. Thanks mum. 😂
I feel like Bailey would also call someone to tell them to watch Seabiscuit. After she watches Seabiscuit, of course.
I love Russian literature, but when I started reading I realized I needed a little bit more context 😂The Romanov's are such an interesting dynasty, Rasputin is the craziest story in world history ever, it's so random it truly feels like a Disney Movie
I remember feeling that Rasputin and Russian history are very much alike. They are very much controversial, sometimes misterious and incomprehensible and with deep roots into so called Russian soul. With all of its passion and deep internal suffering
I requested this episode like a week ago or something and you replied that you have a surprise for me.. since then I've been super excited like a kid getting an icecream from a truck 😂 thank you ❤ you're talented and ambitious
Hi Bailey! Could you make an episode on Dracula/ vampires? Like the entire unknown history/ origins?

Just a note about sending people to Siberia & such. My great-grandfather and family were part of the Tsar's guard and some a part of the Tsarina's court. So my fam had to book it when the Revolution happened. (They did lose touch with a sister who remained there) At one point my g-grandfather was actually stationed in Siberia where not ever they had enough food to make it through. They would boil their boots just to make broth from the leather. So whether you were a prisoner or actually stationed there, it was unlivable.
Not much has changed in how they treat their people or troops.

Pneumonia….well 😅 as a Greek I cracked up because I always wondered why in the English language it’s called without with out the “P”.
It’s from the word «πνευμονία» (Pnefmonia: exact pronunciation in Greek) so that why the “P” is there.
Thank you for clarifying this because I always did wonder lol
We need a Spontaneously Human Cumbustion episode!!!

Your videos are always interesting and also informative. Now with videos like these about Rasputin or then Erzsébet Bathory are exactly the ones that interest me the most. I think my old Vienna would also have one or two dark stories to offer, but generally not only Vienna, all Europe and as you can see, you never stop learning. Greetings from Vienna, Austria
How about a video on the battle of Vienna in the year 911? The Muslims were invading Europe, then the Christians stopped them and whipped them so bad they turned around and went back to Asia.

I did a huge presentation on the assassination of Rasputin in Uni and own a first edition of the book “Rasputin the Holy Devil” so you better get this right Bailey!! 😂🥰😘
I would like to point out that we don’t actually know Rasputin’s exact birth date because they didn’t keep birth records for the lower class at the time. So the birthday is a guess.
Okay so the assassination info isn’t 100% correct. So the noble men arranged the assassination of Rasputin the night where they poisoned the cakes and wine. He ate and drank A LOT and still didn’t die. So Yussie shot him in the back and he still didn’t die and tried to run when one of the other noble man shot him in again as he was running knocking him unconscious. But He still wasn’t dead and the Police actually heard the shots that were fired. There is speculation that the police helped the men dump his body in the river. Where it is still a bit fuzzy on if he actually died from drowning or from his gun shot wounds.
Learning the differences from the movie & what really happened.. 🤯😳
Ok well now I need a whole Dark History on the Romanov’s.

"Pneumonia" is a Greek word where "p" is also pronounced when speaking the word in Greek, and "u" is pronounced as "v". It comes from the word "pnevmonas", written as “pneumonas” in English, which means lung in English. So pneumonia means a lung disease.
