I can't believe it! I've been using this camcorder with 4k 25p always being a bit annoyed deep down below, because it could do more if I had bought it from the US. I was just looking to buy another old AX33 from the US and now I find this gem and it really works... This is unbelievable... You really are a hero! Thanks!
Great guide, the LCD door on my original US version FDR-AX53 finally gave out and came unhinged, then the plastic cable came lose and I lost the power to my LCD screen. It's a 4 year old camera, been through a lot, been out on rough water fishing, been through duck hunting, many winters... Instead of sending it out to get the LCD door hinge fixed, I ended up getting a new Euro version for $780, then did this update, back in gear! Very much appreciated!!! I may one day get an expensive mirrorless, but so far, I just still love my FDR-AX53 still in 2023, being able to zoom in so far without having to change a lens and the B.O.S.S. stabilization is still best in it's class I think. I just hope Sony one day comes out with a future version of this amazing predecessor! Some of us that are in action sports, fishing, hunting, skiing, driving cars just want to point and shoot, not mess around with lenses and the rest of the crap like a clumsy gimbal! I bought a second version without any hesitation, so many great memories made with the AX53 and since some of you CZcamsrs put out these videos to change from PAL to NTSC, it allows some of us to extend the life of this camera since majority versions are either chinese or european version being sold right now... I mean I checked Best Buy near me, they're still selling the, but for top dollar like $1,050, bought the Euro version on Walmart for only $780! I still get other CZcamsrs saying their impressed with some of my videos and have bought the AX53 despite owning an expensive DSLR or mirrorless... Sony built one amazing camcorder, now it's time to come out with an upgraded version, I sure hope that one day happens!
Now that I'm writing the comment under the video, I live in Milan, Italy, I confirm that it worked without problems on both Sony FDX AX-33s, on the first attempt the application told me that I needed to have a more charged battery so I connected the camera to the power cable and then everything went as per the tutorial. Thank you so much for the video and the application!!! You are truly great!!! Now the FDR AX33 videos go with those of the DJI Mavic 2 drone in automatic mode which runs only at 30 FPS.
It's really amazing that someone had to make this extra program to change something that should have come standard
Wow, I had tried multiple times to get this tweak to work on my AX53 to no avail, but this tutorial finally did it. It was the disabling of the checkbox "Enable PAL/NTSC selector" that I didn't know - obviously I always thought that was the one I had to enable, not disable. Thank you very much.

This helped. I have a FDR-AX100 Japan version camera. This helped me to resolve an issue I was having.
* The update kept failing when using my MacBook Air, so I used a Windows 7 machine and all was good.
* If like me you are already in NTSC land and wanted to add PAL rather than vice versa, do not bother. You will lose the functionality of NTSC frame rates (with the exception of 24p). Unfortunately, this hack does not make the camera a true world camera in terms of being able to switch between PAL and NTSC and the various flavours of frame rates. (XAVC-S: 4K 30p 24p HD 60p 30p 24p OR 50p 25p and 24p mode alternative).
Dude, you are a lifesaver! I had to buy an AX43A and shoot a video the next day on such short notice. I got the camcorder and was in a panic when trying to set it up, no 30fps option for 4k! I am in the US and bought it from a US seller, but it was stuck in PAL or something. This video saved me!

There is still a point to sync your framerate with the local electricity grid frequency, to avoid flicker. But with LEDs I see this as less and less of an issue
I just get this camera yesterday, and im soo happy to found this.. i was looking from yesterday till today.. Pal mode is ok if you making still video, but when moving arround, it sucks :(

I can confirm the latest version of the software, v0.18 works perfectly on the AX53

Thank you so much. I just bought a new AX43a for a really good price, and when I got it I realized the catch is that it was 25p. Followed the steps with no problems whatsoever and filmed a nice test video in 30p. Out of curiosity, is there any disadvantages to disabling the video recording limit? Will the video file size end up getting corrupt?

I was asking me if you also leave checked the box "enable PAL/NTSC selector", together with "unlock protected settings", is there is any chance to have both switchable systems with 30p on the same camera? (did you try that option?) Thanks.
Hi Sean, this video is great, but do you have any idea why on my AX53, the same menu, lack the possibility to change to 24p mode? It is completely missing
If you haven't used the tweak tool to change any settings then the 24p mode should be there. There is no reason that i can think of as to why it wouldn't be there. The only time it disappears is when you have done the tweak. Are you seeing 30p and 60p options in the Frame rate menu? And what firmware version is your camera using?

@@IoRisparmio Im sorry but i have no idea why it isnt there. The only thing i can suggest is that you do a factory reset on the camera and see if it shows up after. To do factory reset goto menu - setup - spanner icon and then click down once and you should see initialize. Touch initialize and follow the instructions

Has anyone got this to work via a Macbook? I've just got an AX33 and have been thoroughly disappointed by the jerky nature of the 25fps :(
i know, its absolute bs how mac's can't handle these downloads, so i'm stuck with 25fps too. not happy.
Hello! Can you possibly help me see how this thing works the other way around? I have an ntsc DFR AX 100 that I want to pal (25 / 50p).
My first attempt to change system, was not lucky and the AX 53 was switched off with the SD card led lighted in red and the APP telling me "time out". I removed the battery and the camera turned on again, unchanged, so that I used another computer and this time the system change was OK.
I didn't know about the chance to switch from a system to another. (I bought the Sony FDR AX 53 in November 2020) Who lives in PAL areas, get a 4K in 25p only, to slow speed to have good footage in fast motion. - (I really don't understand why Sony locks, in PAL areas, the possibility to use both systems, they give us 24p but not 30p, that is the most usefull framerate. But the price of camera is same in all the world). Thanks for your tutorial, very easy to understand.

Any way to use this app to change camera settings like resolution and framerate? I have an AX33 with a dead touchscreen, would love to get access to the menu again.
Replace the ribbon cable and the screen will work again, although a tricky job, not easy

If I select 4K option, it immediately stops to record. Any idea . I do use the 1.02 firmware release . Thanks
I have not heard about this issue. I can't think as to why 4K recording would stop and HD recording still works. Only thing i can think of off the top of my head is try a different memory card incase that is the problem. Im not sure what else to suggest.

Because in Europe you need 25 p at night sometimes because of the lights.
That is not possible. The camera would need to be in NTSC and PAL mode at the same time. The only way to do it is to use the tweak to switch it back and fourth between NTSC and PAL as needed.

The ax43 is not in the list of known supported cameras but from what i can tell the ax43 is the same as the ax53 but lacks infrared nightshot, viewfinder and has a lower resolution touchscreen. They both have the same processor, lens, image sensor and image stabilizer. That doesn't mean it will work but its very possible it will. If its not compatible then you will get an error. There is always a risk of something going wrong and bricking your camera even if it is a supported camera so proceed at your own risk.

I'm using a sony handycam cx900 and only allows me to record in 15p 50p 50i does this work?
Hi sebastian the cx900 doesn't seem to be in the list of compatible cameras. That doesn't mean your camera won't work with this tweak but its not a good sign. I know theres not a lot of info on the internet which is why i put the video up to help but you could search to see if anyone has tried it with that model. Or you could try it yourself AT YOUR OWN RISK. Sorry i couldn't be more helpful

The AX43 is not in the list of compatible devices but the AX43 is basically the same as the AX53 but with less features and the AX53 works. It should work but it is up to you if you want to try it or not.

Your welcome. I dont know if it will 100% work but it is very similar to the AX53 in function and features so i would guess that it uses the same operating system and therefore should work. But it is completely up to you if you want to take that risk and try it. If you do try it, please let me know the outcome.

When I try this, it says I need to disable protection first? I had previously updated the camera firmware from Sony to version 1.10. Does this have any effect on the process?
When you connect the camera to the usb and press the start tweaking button it should bring up a window with check boxes for different options. The bottom option is to disable protection. Make sure you have that box checked and uncheck the "enable pal/ntsc selector & warning enabled"
@@seansaich9685 It won't let me change either option. I tried both the disable protection checkbox (it's unchecked and remains unchecked) and the enable pal/ntsc one. Neither would stay checked or unchecked, would just revert straight back to how they were. No changes were made to the camera. I made sure it was in 24p mode first too.
@@neorococco I just noticed that you updated firmware to 1.10. Is that correct or a typo? The latest firmware for the Sony FDR-AX53 is 1.02. Are you using a Sony FDR-AX53?

I wonder if this tweak will unlock the language issue. My FDR-AXP35 is already in NTSC but does not allow for English. Only Japanese as it was from Japan. Can we check the all language box and pick English?
It shouldn't cause any issues by selecting the language options
@@seansaich9685 So should the language options box be checked or unchecked? The camera is already in NTSC and don't want that part effected. I did the PAL conversion on a FDR-AXP55 that came from Australia with English language already. Worked great. I just to buy a FDR-AX35 from Japan. Better build quality than the AX53/55, faster lens, and built in USB. Plus can be used with any "TV' remote.

@@chrishund3157 That should just be left as it is. Don't change anything you dont want. The boxes that are checked or unchecked should be what your camera is using or not using

Is this work with sony hdr-cx405?
This model is not in the list of compatible cameras. That doesn't mean it doesn't work for your camera. It just means your camera model has not been confirmed. Maybe someone in the comments who has tried this mod on that model can confirm if this mod works on your model. Or if you are brave enough you can try it yourself
@@seansaich9685 HDR-CX405 is in the list of compatible cameras since 0.18. But there is no 24p mode. Still blowing my mind trying to get 60p.

It's so annoying - every Sony (and other brands) photo camera has an option to change Pal to NTSC and the other way, but handycams don't have that option! It's outrageous!

@@BENCREATIONS You can also try plugging the cable into different ports or even try it with a different computer if you have access to one. Please also explain to me the error you are getting. Do you get an error message or an error code show up or does it just freeze?
