  • After upgrading from your factory suspension, there is a bit of setup to ensure that you’re squeezing every bit of performance. Coilovers have a bunch of different parameters that can be changed to optimize the driving experience, regardless of how low you set the ride height, and the same thing goes for your control arms. In this video, I will be going over the initial setup on my FB6 Honda Civic Si, in addition to all of the adjustments that should be made prior to going to your alignment shop.
    I tried to throw all of the links below to the items used in this video. Have a look at them, and let me know if I’m missing anything! Just a heads up, you adjust ride height with spring and the base is for tuning bump/rebound travel. This applies to both coil over & divorced designs.
    If you adjust height at the base you'll have the wheel colliding with the body work. You use it to set a limit for bump travel.
    If your spring is loose at your desired ride height, that's what helper springs are for. Spring pre-load is not a thing, just an outcome of height settings.

    Unfortunately most people (and most cheap coil over manufactures them selves) don't know how to set up these types of coilovers properly.
    The required bump/droop ratio (2/3 bump to 1/3 droop is usually a good guideline) should be set by first installing the coilovers on the car with no springs fitted. Adjust the coil over in the damper body so the piston is at the correct point for the desired ratio at the desired ride height. You can fit the wheels and fully compress the suspension at this point to check clearance. If all is well, refit the springs and use the spring "preload" to bring the damper piston back to the required point determined above (set the ride height).
    Doing this allows you to set the height without altering the bump/droop ratio like you are doing when you adjust the height with the lower damper body in the video. You're either taking away bump or droop doing it as you are.
    You may find you need a helper spring if the spring now separates from the seat at full droop. Don't worry about using preload to adjust height either, it makes no difference how much preload the spring has once the weight of the car is compressing it, it will be the same length (as long as it's the more common linear spring type rather than progressive).
    Suspension Secrets website have some great articles about this on their website, it takes a bit of setting up but is absolutely worth it to get the most out of your coilovers.
    Usually the higher end brands like KW/NITRON etc use single body dampers so none of this is required, they set the bump/droop for you and only adjust height via the spring perch. These dual body designs are just used for cheapness so they can carry the design over to other models, but for that reason setting them up as above is pretty important.

    • @daokochan6245
      @daokochan6245 Před rokem +2

      This is correct. Blows my mind how much misinformation is out there on this and continues to be repeated. What hes doing DOES achieve what most people are buying coils want and thats to just lower a car. I'd wager most dont know any better, may just not care about doing it this way, or will never use the shock in a situation where you want full use of the shock travel.

    • @k20ee96
      @k20ee96 Před rokem +1

Is it safe to say that the spring rate is too soft? Coilover is bnew, and I'm worried that I might be putting some stress on the rear shock because the car's too heavy for the spring

    Agree with everything you said except for the rear toe adjustment, it’s actually adjusted on the rearward nuts on the trailing arm where the knuckle attaches, the 17mm and 24mm nuts that are on top of each other is where the factory adjustment point is for rear toe. Otherwise very informative, will be using your tips when installing my coilovers.

      @@GilbrianLopez125 The end links on these cars are not adjustable. You can install aftermarket ones however.

    Milan Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from Jake and i at Eliminator Performance hope you got your snowblower in good running condition with all this drifting snow we are getting here in Port Colborne. Our neighbour just finished shovelling out his side door entry drift that was 7 feet high luck he could get out of his entry door.

      Merry Christmas and happy new years to you guys too! Yes thank you guys for the help. I was able to band air the shift fork for the mean time. I had a good 4 feet in front of my main entrance, and about 5 feet in front of my garage doors. Wasn't fun to clear lol

    great video Milan thank you, i noticed that you linked the 06-11 skunk 2 camber arms but i did some research and they make the arms for the 12-15 as well, do the 8th gen arms really work on the 9th gen?

      Hey Juan, from my understanding, they're identical between the 8th and 9th gens

    Each to their own but I've always used shock body to dictate bump stop engagement, then spring perch (preload) to adjust compression travel vs rebound travel.
    -Adjusting ride height using shock body adjustment only is a good way to get the tyre to collide with body work.
    -Adjusting spring perch to a generic 5mm is a good way to either not have enough compression travel (no grip), or not have enough rebound travel (no grip) depending on spring stiffness.

    Sorry for the question, I’m learning. Why did you remove that screw from the shock absorber instead of adjusting the height directly from the coilover body? Thanks for answering

    Question, the arm to subframe mount points… do you loosen then tighten them with the cars weight on all 4 wheels to prevent bushings tearing or do you keep it loose and tighten it when fully extended with no weight ? Just replaced most of the bushes on my car and don’t want them wearing out quicker to to un necessary stress

    @5:20 is the spring adjustment always on top or can it be place on the bottom lower control arm?

    My friend you hit every “Do It Right” nail on its head sir. Well said, edited, and done.
    I’m about to install a BR series with Swift springs on my 16 ILX. First owner and 8 years old and it’s time for her upgrade.
    Been well versed in my older 00 civics generation of suspension. And this video really helped sort out my confusion about preload and height adjustment on divorced rear systems.

    This is the best explanation of how to adjust this that I have ever seen, thank you so much for finally making this 100% understandable! I feel like I can adjust the suspension on this vehicle I recently purchased with coilovers just like this already installed.

    Great video. I'm a rookie & I'm extremely curious so see how hight and low I can have my car with adjustable coilovers. They may be the solution to upgrading my cars suspension.

      A couple years back, I raised my BC coilovers on my Honda Accord to as high as possible to see how much ground clearance I could have for the winter, and it was a cool experience. Come summer time, I was able to lower it back down since I didn't have to worry about snow or anything. Ya can't do that with stock suspension 😜

    Just a question why the others when adjusting the lowering of the Devorce suspension is only the spring and not the Strut, it was said in the video that when you adjust the spring, you also need to adjust the Strut

    Where does the 5 mm number come from when adjusting the preload for the rear spring and shock absorber? I get the 160 number but why are you subtracting 5 from it?
