  • Here's a lens that could be good value for money: a handy little autofocus wide angle lens from Sigma, for mirrorless Sony and Micro 4/3rds cameras. It can give coverage for sensors as big as APS-C (you could put it on a full-frame Sony mirrorless camera, but you'll have to shoot in crop mode). Let's see how it performs.

If I haven't said it before, I love the unbiased reviews on this channel. Showing several aspects of lens performance makes it a cut above anything else out there. More fun to watch a quick video than browse some of the review sites that can leave you a little unclear of how good (or bad) the lens actually performs in real life. Keep it up!

If Sigma had instead done a 12mm, 24mm, and 60mm trio of lenses it would have been incredible! they could have packaged them into a kit for $500 or so and offered the PERFECT primes kit for new photographers. But 19mm is not wide enough to be exciting, and 30mm is stuck in between two classic focal lengths. The 60mm however is incredible.

I got this lens as a bonus for FF used Sony camera. The image has circular black corners, which is not disturbing me at all, I can crop it as a square, or panoramic. The IQ is good, geometrical distortion is mild and almost free of CA. This tiny lens is always in my bag as only wide angle for hiking and traveling.

Super review as always. I wish you would add some information about auto focus capabilities with a Sony A6xxx camera. The auto focus would be the determining factor in whether I will purchase this lens. I do love the AF on my A6500 and often third part lenses do not support the full spectrum of AF capability with the A6xxx cameras...

Nice to see you listen to your watchers suggestions! ;-) . I agree, as one commenter said, that on MFT it looks sharper. But maybe I'm biased. For street I think it's a little gem. Surprised by the low vignetting. I mean: on mft it's expected, but not on aps-c.

That's as good an articulation as I've ever seen for why so many photographers don't like 28mm equivalent. That said, I learned to shoot on iPhones which have approximately that perspective so to me it feels very natural. It gives you more versatility for landscape/architecture/group shots than 35mm, and if you want more subject emphasis, just crop!

    • @christopherfrost

many great camera have been based on 28mm or equivalent , Plaubel Makina W67, Ricoh R-1, GR-1, Nikon has one too, 28 is a favorite focal length of travel shooters, gives a wider view but with out distortion, my favorite focal length for 40 years .{ sony A7rii- 28/2 , 55/1.8/ 85/1.8 16-35/4 , 70-200/4 ) a Must have in my opinion. personally i consider 35 superfluous .

  • @samsen201
    @samsen201 Před 6 lety +4

As always expected from you, another fantastic review. But again as pointed out by many, 28mm FL remains a very favorite one, for so many, if not you. As you clearly pointed out, its shines for documentary images of large buildings/landscapes where distortion is not wanted, yet mere size of object necessitate a wide lens. All I can say about cons of this lens, namely tad of chromatic aberration, minimal flare and low speed AFing are too few & everything else is good and pros that needs to be emphasis, including very fair price. Good job man and keep up your excellent productions and unbiased reviews.

Chris, thanks for another great review.
I have a suggestion that I'm guessing many people would be interested in. Every one of your lens tests consists of resolution details throughout the apereture range of each lens. It shows us the performance of each lens, but we really can't compare two different lenses side by side easily. Would it be possible to just have the resolution tests available to do a comparasion between results of the lenses that you have [or will] test. It's amazing how much better the Sigma 60mm is over the kit lens, but by itself the kit lens looks good. You might even have the resolution photos still saved somewhere.

Hi Chris, as always great review ! :) For myself i've also figured out that I don't like 19mm or 20mm Lenses on Aps-c.
But I've seen that you can remove the rear baffle of the lens to get this lens working on fullframe sony E-mount cameras since the projected image circle isn't physically cropped by the rear baffle.
Since i really like your reviews i hope that there will be a future option to see what the 19mm will look like on a fullframe sensor in your resolution an contrast pictures especially on the boarders.
    Thanks alot, Kai

Using with the micro four third mount, it will not loose the optical design? I doubt the m43 version, beside the mount, they also put some "speedbooster" piece inside of it.
I wonder if all the Chinese lenses that also include the m43 mount option are actually just adapting poorly

It's very interesting to hear your thoughts on a lens that I actually own! However, I have the mft version of this lens, which has the same field of view as a 38mm lens on full frame. On mft, the lens is pin sharp right out into the corners, even at f/2.8, so I suspect the lens was really designed for the smaller format, and that the e-mount version is more of an 'icing on the cake' product as far as Sigma is concerned. I also have the 60mm f/2.8, which is an even better performer. Mounting them on an Olympus, or any of the latest Panasonic bodies, is favourite, with their 5 axis IBIS. The only thing I find slightly disconcerting, is the design of the AF mechanism - the internal moving parts of the lens rattle around until the camera is turned on and the focusing system becomes energised.

It's a macro lens that has become the go to lens for portraiture for many professionals in my city. It's a tough rival for the 100mm L lens and costs only $350. One of the best values out there for macro and portraiture, if not the best.

It really has to be a special scene to get a nice picture out of it. But I agree 28mm (fullframe) is kinda boring. I us my 22mm pancake on my EOS M the most.

Get a 28mm and you will have a 42 equivalent view, which is better than 35mm or 50mm. Most movies use the 40mm equivalent view. and we all love movies i guess that is the ideal view. for the wide angle get a 14mm and you will have a 21 equivalent field of view on a crop sensor.

There's hardly much difference between a 19mm M4/3 and a 35mm full frame lens. The main issue I have with this lens is the noisy step-changing aperture. Yes, it could also be smaller and brighter but it is what it is and gets the job done at a reasonable price when it was current. I paid £135 for it new. It's no longer made of course, this being 2021.
