  • Today I’m finally doing a prime wide angle lens Sigma 19mm f2.8 Art REVIEW! The Sigma 19mm f2.8 Art lens is generally seen as a phenomenal lens available for a steal of a price - but is it really any good when using it for video? I’ll show you my Sigma 19mm f2.8 video test when using the Sigma 19mm f2.8 Sony a6500 combo (which will look very similar, if not identical, to a Sigma 19mm f2.8 Sony a6300 or Sigma 19mm f2.8 Sony a6000 combo) and who you a major issue I’ve found when using this Sigma 19mm f2.8 DN lens with autofocus video. I’ve heard great things about the Sigma 19mm f2.8 Sony E-Mount lens and my experience has been pretty solid thus far - except for this one MAJOR downfall. In this Sigma 19mm f2.8 Art review, we’ll discuss what that issue is and whether or not you should consider purchasing a Sigma 19mm f2.8 DN lens (Sony E) because of it. My review of the Sigma 19mm f2.8 would probably be a 10/10 if it won’t for that. I hope you enjoy this Sigma 19mm review and don’t forget to subscribe for more Sigma lens review videos like this one! Bought this lens a month ago (for videography), Great for photo, not so great for video sums it up perfectly. The distortion is super minimal, and I felt it handled skin tones a little better with slightly more contrast than the 30 1.4. For aspc video though, I think the 19mm just cant stand up to the 30 1.4

      I have had this lens for about a year, and use it often om my gimbal setup. I have never encountered this problem! I vil say, I only use it on moving shots on the gimbal, and the odd wide angle landscape shot, but i have looked through some footage i made with this, and have not had the problem. great lens for me.

    I just bought a used one, in perfect shape for $125. I don’t do any video on my a6000 and use the kit zoom and the Sony 35mm f1.8. It’s phenomenal for portraits. Just wanted something for a better wide angle landscape/walking around lense. Do you think this is good for that?

  • @superseiyan
    @superseiyan Před 6 lety +1

    1. Is the caveat for video that it's ok when you AND the subject(s) are moving i.e. the shakiness is mostly an issue on tripod/static situations?
    2. Is this better than a6000 kit lens for general night photos and basic closeup portraits?

    • @itstheBMAC
      @itstheBMAC  Před 6 lety

      Hi, Will!
      1) That's not a bad way of looking at it. Unfortunately, I think stabilized footage is a huge step one can take in filmmaking which means, unless shaky handheld shots are what one is going for, the AF on this lens should be considered useless for video unless shots are handheld/un-stabilized and/or set to manual focus.
      2) I wouldn't recommend this lens for portrait shots as it is quite wide. You would probably be better with the Sigma 30mm (which I also have a review for on my channel!). That 30mm also has a wider aperture which, arguably, makes it better for night photos.
      I hope these tips help and thanks for watching!

  • @TamanduaGirl
    @TamanduaGirl Před 5 lety +3

    It's not the AF. It's the lens compensation. Just turn the lens compensation off and it will be fine. You can always do some post compensation if you need to. It's just around the edges due to it trying to straiten out that bit of curve and lighten any vignette it may have. Sony lens comp doesn't play well with non-native lenses.

    • @itstheBMAC
      @itstheBMAC  Před 5 lety +1

      That's actually not true. This is indeed an AF issue and not a lens compensation issue. I can confirm the same problems explained in this video are present even when the Lens Compensation is set to off with this lens (and I always have lens compensation set to off).

  • @FallenStarFeatures
    @FallenStarFeatures Před 6 lety +3

    The fluctuation you're seeing in the corners of the frame are due to lens focus breathing. This is a side-effect produced by the auto-focus mechanism as it attempts to track the weaving motions of your face. It pretty much only happens to bloggers who use auto-focus on a tripod-mounted wide-angle lens to videotape a close-up headshot of themselves against a static background. The rest of us would use a portrait lens at a farther distance to stabilize the plane of focus and eliminate the need to use auto-focus on a tripod-mounted prime lens in the first place.

    • @itstheBMAC
      @itstheBMAC  Před 6 lety

      Yes, what you’re saying makes sense, but this issue doesn’t happen on my wider Sigma 16mm and occurs in this lens whether the subject is only a foot away or several feet away. As such, this issue is almost certainly specific to this lens. It’s simply not a good lens for filmmaking when the filmmaker is relying on autofocus.

      Hey, M! Being locked in with prime lenses isn't such a bad thing. Prime lenses are generally better lenses than zoom lenses when it comes to sharpness, etc. I'll see what I can do about at top 10 features video! To name a few right now, the autofocus is amazing,, the 1080 120 FPS slow motion is killer, and the image quality is insane. Those are probably the top three reasons why I went with the Sony - there's a video on my channel that talks about why I switched from Canon to Sony in more detail. I hope you find it helpful!

Aren't you supposed to focus _once,_ and then just turn off auto-focus when you're shooting video? I also have an FS700 and apparently it does not have this problem (using the _same_ A6400 kit lens). It's just how auto-focus works on the A6xxx and I don't really see a problem with that. TURN OFF THE DAMN auto focus when yer done focusing!!! :) There's this menu option when the focus button actually does focusing while you hold it and leaves it where it is when released. I use just that and quite happy with it. Have you got _face recognition_ turned on? Focus mode: _slow_ ? Fun fact however: used to have a cheap Panasonic cam with a fixed lens and auto focus. Never had the breathing prob. ))

      Problem is that the focus ring on this lens doesn’t have stops, so it’s not easy to operate it manually. Furthermore, problem doesn’t affect only video but audio too: you can clearly hear the lens “ breathing” , even when changing focus manually. Even in manual mode, on a tripod, without touching the focus ring, you can hear that f*****g intermittent sound, though less frequently. Besides that, for photography is a beast!

    HAHA, this is a funny review. You say how great the lens is then discredit as a video lens because of an AF issue that may or may not be user error. Your test footage was a stationary vlog shot. Why do you need AF for that? Why do you need AF for basically any video?

    • @itstheBMAC
      @itstheBMAC  Před 6 lety +1

      No idea what you're talking about here. A review doesn't (and probably shouldn't) be all positive or all negative. The AF issue on this lens is not user error and is a major issue. Quick research on this lens will confirm that. I stand by my statement that the lens is a good lens for landscape photography but not so much for video because of the AF issue. In response to your question, "Why do you need AF for basically any video?" it seems evident to me that you don't have a lot of experience with fast prime lenses and vlogging. I would try looking further into the uses of AF and you will quickly see how important AF can be this day in age. I also mentioned several times that I use this lens in a few of my cinematic vlogs - linked in the video description box-- which are NOT stationary shots. Not sure how you missed that. Hopefully this clears some things up for you. Thanks for stopping by.

    • @highcastletechnology9048
      @highcastletechnology9048 Před 6 lety

      I don't have a lot of experience with vlogging, you are correct in that. Never understood the point of fast lenses for staring at a dude in his room with a shallow depth of field. But I've seen way too many vlogs with AF issues. Why not just set it and forget it with a wider DOF? What is the joy of bokeh in a visually boring vlog. (not that you are boring, but that a standard vlog scene is) Also speaking from the cinematic side, I didn't see any of your cinematic shots that would warrant AF. What camera do you use? Do it have good peaking or zoom? Do you use AF because you have difficulty dialing in sharp focus?

    • @itstheBMAC
      @itstheBMAC  Před 6 lety

      Shallow depth of field can make a big difference in many different situations, even in a room setup like this one. Shallow depth of field often provides a more cinematic and professional look and can make footage stand out from typical wide DOF that most cameras will default to. The joy of bokeh in a "visually boring" vlog is exactly that - the bokeh. It can add cinematic elements to an otherwise static shot. I would take another look at the shots in my cinematic vlogs. AF has been instrumental in locking focus in nearly all of them. Any time you see a shallow depth of field in my vlogs, the shot was likely able to be captured specifically because of AF. In run-and-gun setups, AF, I think, is key when one wants to utilize shallow DOF. For more information on my camera setup, you can check out BMAC.link/Gear. That's where I list all of my gear and equipment. I hope it helps. 👍🏼
