    As a kid, my bedtime was 8pm during the original Late Night run. I would sneak out into the living room every night after Carson and watch the show with the volume turned low, so my folks wouldn't catch me. Tuning into Letterman was like learning a secret handshake, an invitation to join an exclusive club of renegades, luminaries, and outcasts, most of whom were the smartest people in any room. Thanks for contributing to my juvenile delinquency, Dave.

      I did the exact same thing. I missed so many days of 7th grade my mom cut the plug on the TV. Almost set the house on fire bare wiring into the socket after that.

    Can somebody help me with a memory? It would have been around the late 90s. Dave used to do his monologue, then towards the end and old guy used to walk out and interrupt, but not say anything, then walk off. Was that Larry Bud Melman?

    How was this level of improv from Calvert / Larry-Bud achieved? I don't get that his background was in improv / standup comedy. He must be reading off of cue cards, so all the audience questioners were pre-planted with their questions? They all look so genuine and not faking it.

    • @Wiley_Coyote
      @Wiley_Coyote Před 2 lety +3

      Right. The questions were pre-cleared before the show started. They quickly wrote responses up on cue cards for Calvert.

    • @riverraisin1
      @riverraisin1 Před 2 lety +4

      The humor of Larry 'Bud' Melman was that he was so obviously reading cue cards. He wasn't trying to hide the fact. It was his innocent, amateurish delivery that was his genius.

      When Dave was on NBC it seemed like he had free reign to do whatever he wanted to do. It was low budget gold. When he moved over to CBS they threw loads of money at him and the show became too polished and choreographed for my taste. I quit watching.

    The kid that completely botched the location in Texas where he was from; was there an explanation for that other than the school system?

    • @midnightrider2342
      @midnightrider2342 Před 5 měsíci

      More than likely this "kid" was an intern or writer on the show who was planted in the audience specifically for this bit - as were all the other ones. These staff members usually had made-up stories about where they were from or what they did, and Dave liked to catch them off guard with random questions.

  • @roccoand2612

    The T-shirts- were they anything? Looks like they were just plaiin white shirts..

    • @kevinnewsom3128
      @kevinnewsom3128 Před 2 lety +6

      After they had been doing this segment for a few months, Dave finally asked what was on the T-shirts. He thought they were probably "Late Night With David Letterman" shirts. or something affiliated with NBC...Nope...Just plain white "Fruit of the Loom" type underwear T-shirts ...That made it even funnier! Eventually, they started giving away two shirts per question, and Larry's new catch phrase became "Bob Rooney, please give this nice person two T-shirts. Those were the days, my friend!
