This is a beautiful disaster. One of the things I loved about Larry was I was never sure if he was in on the joke or not.
Either way the man could make a tasty "toast on a stick"
@@charleybarley914 I wondered too and Calvert DeForest played the character of Larry Bud Melman. Which makes me appreciate it even more knowing we were laughing WITH him and knowing Calvert was in on the joke, but Larry Melman was not. Sheer GENIUS!
I knew he was legit. Just a harmless, clueless schnook, used for laughs.
I remembered when Calvert Deforest (Larry Melman) died, as a tribute Dave played back this segment in the CBS show
“Would you please enjoy a hot towel” 😂😂😂😂 Larry Melman was one of a kind, just hilarious.
I miss Forrest so much. And I love the way Dave absolutely lost it over Larry's microphone "technique".
That's Mr. DeForest to you, Bud ;-)
Good fa you
So incredibly funny from start to finish. The mic technique gets things going, but Larry's little monologues interspersed throughout are pure gold
I saw this live as a teen, and I’m howling as loudly as I did back then. There was LITERALLY NOTHING else like it at the time. Not even SNL was this insane and purposefully, hilariously lame, as this bit and countless Letterman shows were. And oddball guests like Potato Chip Lady, parrot trainer, etc. It’s almost like anti-entertainment. Like punk comedy. He was like one of the coolest dudes around.
This is a personal favorite Letterman bit. It is hilarious but what makes it even funnier is how tickled Dave gets from it. Classic stuff.
This is one of the rare times that I remember Dave actually laughing hysterically. I LOVE it😂
I agree 100%
He laughed his ass off AT Richard Simmons.
This is just pure gold!! Letterman was good on CBS but the NBC years were just priceless!
The tall mustached fellow mentioned he was in NY working on a film called Sweet Ginger Brown. 1984's The Flamingo Kid was known as "Sweet Ginger Brown" early on -- referring to the Gin Rummy game.
I had to Google it to see what movie he was talking about. Surprised to see it was The Flamingo Kid. My parents used to love that movie when I was kid.
Unstoppable Larry Bud Melman! One of the best bits in TV history. Thanks for posting it in all its glory.
And underappreciated!
Calvin DeForest, master of the mic.
I saw the title and clicked so fast--this is one of my favorite bits of all time.
Everything about this is comedy gold.
Hal Gurnee loved chaos like this, so he needs some credit for this utter disaster lol
Larry was such a loose canon. Dave would almost instantly lose control of the bit as soon as Larry got involved. 🤣
I don't think Dave has ever laughed so loud on his show
We miss you Dave! Never will be another late night king like you!
Ventriloquist in training! Lmao
Larry "Legend"Melman🙌
Nelcome!
What makes this so great is Dave laughing along with us. A rare thing.
When Larry laughs, it just takes it to another level!😂
Everytime I watch bud
I always feel better afterwards
He makes me feel so chill
Love and pain
Are the foundations of truly humorous people
And Robert definitely was funny
I had tears in my eyes watching this 😂
Still the funniest thing I’ve seen on TV.
Larry Bud Melman was so awesome. Miss him and the show. Thanks Dave!
Epic... there was a time when i was a kid Larry bud was the funniest thing I had ever seen... still makes me laugh 😃
This was one of those most funniest moments on letterman.
This man was truly irreplaceable.
Classic. I can still remember seeing this back in the day. Couldn't stop laughing.
I've watched a lot of Dave over the years, and this has to be one of the all time funniest bits!
May god bless Larry "Bud" Melman
In 1983, The Port Authority was one of the sketchiest and most crime ridden places on Earth!
The old NYC doesn't exist anymore and in many ways that is a good thing!
My parents and I took a lot of buses and a lot of trains when I was a kid. I remember the faces of a number of bus drivers and train porters. They were all friendly and they were all black. Bless those hardworking people who kept America moving. Frankly, it’s something they’ve always done.
Oh my god this is so fantastic. It’s just mayhem.
OMG, I can't watch this when I'm eating breakfast because I laughed so hard I sprayed my tea all over the table.. 😂😂😂
Now we could have told you that! Check with us next time!
THE funniest moment in "Late Night/Show history without a doubt!!
This is hysterical! i can't believe there aren't more views of this!
Between this one and the WKRP turkey episode, I'm not sure which makes me laugh more uncontrollably.
absolute classic
Larry Bud Melman could have easily cameo'd on an episode of Night Court.
He would have fit in well with all the other defendants!
Larry would turn 101 years old just this month.
HOWLING!!!!!😂😂😂😂
Best show ever
Wow..great to see more than just the first segment.
an absolute legend and treasure of a man🥳🥳🥳
Calvert was so hilarious and real (despite Dave having him be called Larry for some odd reason back then). Such an icon
Awe...saw this broadcast. Such a good show!
I’ve always remember this bit. Watched it live laughing hysterically. Still laughing hysterically today.
Larry was hilarious. Pure belly laughs.
This is the best
Sure. You all laugh at Larry "Bud" Melman ... but Mr Melman went on to be the President of Melman Bus Lines. *President*.
The original Peter O'hanrahanrahan
3:23 The moment.
It' hillarious how he always moves the mic away before the question is finished, every time, in every sketch.
Greatest. Thing. Evah!
Calvert DeForest...a truly underappreciated comic genius!!!
larry bud melman, comedic genius!!
Classic!
When TV was really funny.
CLASSIC
“Do you have any questions about New York?”
This is the best late night segment ever that doesn't feature Norm MacDonald
Hilarious inept that it is the funniest thing.
Larry looking so young here
RIP KING
what did I just watch ah ha ha ha
Funniest show ever
If you enjoy Dave breaking and laughing check out classic Chris Elliott. Dave loves him some Chris.
The og Steve brule
If he had come up with a variety of other questions/comments for the passengers, this couldve been even better! But great nonetheless!
Dammit, I was trying to enjoy a hot cup of tea. Near disaster.
This was before Dave went corporate.
God, I miss old New York! Everything about this is great. The people at the bus station, the passengers arriving, the bus driver... Everything cleaner and classier. People had much more personality also. Now you would just see a bunch of zombies looking at their phones or absolute degenerates.
I agree with much of what you wrote but it was definitely not cleaner!!!
What’s the name of the movie the bigger guy said he was in ?
Did you have a snack on the bus??
I forgot Letterman used to actually be funny.
Larry spends the least time with the model-hot passenger. Dave has to step in. So clueless.
you nearly porked that woman - -I mean you ....
here's one i really don't get
Before Beetlejuice there was LARRY BUD MELMAN! The GREATEST WACK PACKER :) Sorry Howard.
Before Dave became a non-funny Marxist.
