Introducing a NEW series on /DRIVE, aimed at educating you to build a faster, better, more reliable car: /ENGINEERED. We want to empower our fellow enthusiasts to know more, and do more, by learning from some of the best engineers in the game.
This week , we ask Tom Nelson (of Nelson Racing Engines) to explain WHY the Chevrolet LS engine is the reliable legend that it is. - Auta a dopravní prostředky
"The motor is really about a combination of parts". As a seasoned tuner there could not be more of a true statement. My job is to ensure the combination plays nice together and is optimized to run as effectively as possible. The most important part of making power and hitting your goals is to create the correct combination, not just throw the "hottest" part at it and hope for the best.
It’s pretty hard to beat an LS engine. I drove my SS Camaro for 130K miles auto crossed it, open road raced it. All out mile races. Never skipped a beat. I never even changed the spark plugs!!! Car got 24mpg in 6th gear !!! Great engine the LS1.
I am a woodworker. I make hand cut dovetails and box joints. My joints require clearances of between 3 to 4 thousandths. So watching your video I am appreciating the multitude of factors you must take into account, and the precision that you must achieve to produce your engines. My hat is off to you, You are a master, and your video is inspirational.

Yeah I uh, don't care..
Jake Bewely Of course you don't.

i love how he explained about the LS motor like its a art form
Yeah, seems like he has a real passion for it.
I thought he was sleep-talking
It is for it's age.
Heavy yes, but undeniably a very very well built motor. Reliable, 700-1000hp capable internals, well lubricating, etc.
I mean it doesn't have painted valve covers. But the layout of a twin turbo inline 6 is a pretty thing.
In my opinion at least.
Ocean Richardson i do two
Absolutely amazing video, also Tom seems like a really down to earth guy, and very knowledgeable, /DRIVE should totally to a full length video, like *Inside NRE horsepower factory*, would love to see an update on their AWD mid engine hyepcar.
+Tyrone Ross That would be great!
+Tyrone Ross Inside NRE, Inside UGR and Inside AMS all would be top videos for me to watch for sure!
+Tyrone Ross THATS ALL I WANT FOR CHRISTMAS!

agree 100%..
This guy is obviously good at building LS motors, but he's even better on office chairs. He's built like 70 or 80 degrees of slouch into that thing. Mean. His face is so far away I don't even know what he looks like. What a boss.
MOS6582 lmao
Now that's funny!
😂😂 good one
Check out his stuff. Nelson racing engines. He's an engine genius.
Hey now it's taken years and years to build that slouch.
Very hard to believe that this has had 4.3 million views and only recieved
Mr. Nelson knows his shit, very intelligent individual. Thanks for the upload.

+jaky3 John and his family are super nice! I live near them and always get a chance to talk to them whenever I see them.
Oh I'm sure he puts up a nice role on when he wants. Read up on him.
jaky3 Well, not that I know of. Haha. But I'll definitely be more alert next time I talk to him.
+Ariel Zelada John Hennessey is a grade A douche. I didn't believe people and then I actually read up on him, and holy shit. I still can't believe what I read over a year ago. don't buy anything from him. just a warning bud.
I have been out of the engine building game for about 26 years, and man things have changed! Great job with this video. I learned a hell of a lot in 19 minutes!
Amazing video, the way this guy sits there so casually spitting out tech data off the top of his head like that is cool. I would really enjoy sitting and listening to him for days
A man with clear passion for his work and an understanding of it all. Everyone talks about legendary tuners, Techart, RWB, AC Schnitzer, Brabus, Carlsson, Hennessey. This man, and the whole of NRE, should be on that list of tuners we all know and love.
Best video on engineer engine builds I've seen in... Ever. Not stupid long. Not mathematically boring. Truthful.
Thank you.
Don't know you, but I know the difference between bullshit and a man that knows what he's talking about.
My hotrodding days are over, I'm 73, but wish I had another go around to play with the LS.
Enjoyed your presentation.
Yeah, Nelson definitely knows his stuff. Check out his video on the RX-7 sleeper. That's when I fell in love!
I had a 99 Camaro Z28 with the LS-1 but one day I let my brother borrow my car then I had a 1999 Paperweight. He was showing out for a girl and slammed into a light pole.
IT'SME HELL YEA! HAHA
That is like lending a motorcycle to a bicyclist..
You would never lend out a MC to a complete novice but a cyclist certainly would have a better appreciation than the average car driver. Many of the most famous MX'rs from the 80's who raced the next gen Jap banshee's 125/250's (83'+) Began their careers in competitive BMX
Thanks Tom Nelson for giving us an deep justed professional opinion on the GM LS mill! You are an awesome engine technician! I just love your videos they are very enjoyable and informative. Your specialty builds are like artwork!
Thanks for the education. I'm talking bullet points, I'm in over my head trying to soak it all in. I'm sure I have a much better grasp of a 6.0 build for a mild jeep than were my head was before learning today.... Thanks Mr Nelson
Great presentation. I'm very, very far from a tuner or mechanic, but it was explained to where even I could grasp the concepts.
don't care what anyone says, tom nelson is the man
This is like a "The Church of LS Engines" sermon, love it. I've not had an LS motor in any of my cars but this guy drills it. I've had a bunch of 4 cylinders since the late 80's, the Wife has had a bunch of V6 motors as leases since she works for a major US auto maker. Thank you "The Drive" for educationing myself".
The confidence makes the man, dude has for sure been doing it for along time.
Thanks, Tom! I have a '73 Big Block Vette that I hope to give the NRE treatment some day. I leaned more in this video than I have in years. I appreciate your style. Many hot-rodders brag about their stuff being the best and everything else "ain't squat." You've earned all the bragging rights but still include regular enthusiasts and novices without putting us down. Good business sense and good people skills. Great instructional piece. Thanks again. My favorite one lately is "why would you put that motor in a rx7" I'm like "hahahaha"
I am working on a 6.0 now and love the way you explain the different ways you can improve things.Great video👍
Thanks for the video. Like many guys, I have always dreamed of fabricating machines and building engines. Unfortunately, my military career did not afford the luxury of staying in one place long enough to get established. Watching your video gave me a lot of food for thought, and concepts to research as I tinker through my retirement. I think it would be an amazing experience to work under, and be mentored by you.
I am perfectly happy with the LSA in my CTS-V coupe. Only has a couple of bolt on mods but has all sorts of power. Love hearing that blower wind up too.

That is one of the best series about performance on CZcams. Please make an new ENGINEERED series
Dang, I learn more from this guy than from any other boutique builder out there! I'm already worried that I screwed up with a standard deck 427 custom block.
3:57 That's Harry Bridges Ave. The recent work has made the part by the 110 freeway look really nice but as it turns into Alameda another half mile ahead of where they're shooting, it's the old Wilmington we all know and "love." (Anaheim St near Alameda develops pot holes with their own zip codes, in fact I just blew out a tire over there last month)
Thank you for taking the time to make this video. A lot of good info, some people would charge for this depth of knowledge!!
Building the LS in my '13 Silverado now, and its the first endeavor on this platform; I am considering building one for my first gen Firebird after.
Lastly, I can contest in my limited experience on the LS block, Tuning will make a HUGE difference. After valve train work, my motor struggled to start. A couple weeks of tuning (PC Tuners), and I can lay rubber (just a bit) in second!!!
Great video. Taught me a great deal about important considerations when building and choosing an LS engines. It will definitely help in my next custom build. Thank you.
I don't know shit about cars, yet watching this guy explain all this stuff was oddly satisfying.
quite easy to understand as well

Love the new series, please make an /ENGINEERED playlist on the main channel page.
Mr. Nelson creates some of the best engine setups. The man is a complete master of the V8 engine. How awesome you got him to sit down and drop some free golden knowledge on us. This is one guy worth listening too. Thanks for this video. PS The man knows his Turbo setups just as well. Even creating his own unique turbo setups made up of varieties of different materials.
I love the ad hoc lighting fix. An easel pad on the table. Took me 12 minutes to even notice it because he was dropping so much fact :)
Ive been a tech for 8 years and this is so interesting to me. I would love to get the chance to build performance engines. Anything performance I build now is out of my pocket which is hard when I have so many hobbies.
Ford guy here , the LS is a great engine, but the fanboys make me hate it at some times...
Every brand, make, model of everything out there has fan boys and they kill it for everyone :(
+1975 First On Race Day Capri 3.0 Ghia I'm a die hard chevy guy(Or any brand Big Block :P) but the LS craze got to me, I would rather put an old school SBC or BBC in any ride over a LS at this point, can't beat the sound either. I love the LS though, they're amazing engines and superior to the SBC,... but... BIG BLOCK!
+1975 First On Race Day Capri 3.0 Ghia Don't hate the engine, hate fanboys.... I can't stand them either as they tend to lack technical knowledge just read brochure and boom they are experts.

As a student of engine blueprinting and extracting horsepower from any engine these is a great overview, good reminders and tips. Would love to work on an LS engine!
Thanks for sharing - lotta respect for a man who has mastered his craft!
Nelson builds some incredible power plants, not just LS! these guys are very talented builders
Steve morris is better!!!
Great video. I have an LS2 in a CTS-V and, though it's performing perfectly, the desire to get another 100HP out of it is always there...
Updates?
Very good educational video for someone who doesn’t know much about engines. The presentation was great!
Love my 98 six speed Corvette. Got a good deal on it in 2017 and it already had a couple of external mods to boost up the HP a bit. The performance of that LS motor for what I paid for the car is so worth it...
I love how producers can make you feel power by what the interviewer is describing plus the background music 🔥🔥🔥 just the first 6-7 minutes just snatched you... most don’t understand.. 😲 Great job
The LS, 2JZ-GTE, RB26, and 1.3 liter twin turbo 13B rotary engines are all great and legendary engines that are great to work with. They all love making big and decent amount of power. Great presentation Nelson!
Rb26 are not that great stock lol. And rotary are unreliable time bombs
@@muzzytt You're definetly wrong
@@verttisyrjala2897 how so what I said is true
@@verttisyrjala2897 well I'm sorry if I hurt your feelings but a rotary engine is certainly not a reliable engine. Just go ask R X 8 owners how they are going.

I absolutely love this video, have shared it with multiple people. Thank you!
I may be a JDM main but that doesn't change the fact that I love all cars from any country, and honestly more people need to watch this video, I already liked the ls but this video was an eye opener. Props 💯
You guys should of asked this legend about "breaking in" engines. Damn.
+Knights2theEnd I agree. That would have been a great question for him.
+Knights2theEnd omg, I'm so in agreement.
+Knights2theEnd omg, I'm so in agreement.
leloodallasmultipass it's such a disappointment :/
+Knights2theEnd
There is no particular way of doing it. Some people don't even bother "breaking in" engines and just go all out from the start and haven't suffered any issues. So there is no evidence for it, although I would feel a lot more comfortable taking it easy on a new engine for a few hundred miles.
Great content on the LS. "Spend the money on the foundation and by the right block" The details matter and are in the blue print. I'll be building one soon and put it on video.
Oldskool funk are you still going to do an LS? I remember watching a few of your videos a few years ago, I think the one about leaky head gaskets.
On second thought it might be hard to do an ls with smog laws depending on your state.
Great to see you right here love the videos on God keep it up

You know your stuff for sure mate. Owned a few Ls now and Id have you build my next for sure.
Foundations are key. From NZ.
That was a very interesting and informative video. I learned something today, thank you !
Knowledge IS "POWER"! This man definitely knows.
I also remember the commercials they did where they put the wine glasses on an LS hood and revved it up....wonderful stuff back then.
I think you are referring to the original lexus ls 400 commercial..not GM ls motors
Good Info I read a Article in Corvette Mag that the Engineers at Gm Dyno the LS Engine it had a lot of Potential of High Horse Power but kept it quite for a few years because of the 90-95 ZR1C4 Corvette 4Cam 5.7
This is so therapeutic, is it the music, his tone, is it the engine talk? I'm at peace.
This Is Such a Mello' Cadenced' Matter of Fact' Smooth and Almost Therapeutic Interview! 😶 👍🇺🇸
Like the Bob Ross of engine building, I could listen to this all day long
The more I listen to this guy, the more I realize I should have pursued a career with cars; engines specifically. I'm by no stretch of the imagination a mechanic or technician, but I have always loved and respected the work and quality, of all sorts, as to what really brings a car to life, and it was a pleasure listening to this man.
Now... how do I go about fitting an LS inside a 1980 Chevrolet Citation?
He’s right on aftermarket intake manifolds. I was building my Z06 7.0 and the builder suggested I change out my factory intake manifold to a short runner with a smaller plenum. Complete loss of torque on the lower end and mid range, but pulled harder 4900 and above. Swapped back to factory manifold and pulled way harder on lower end and mid range.
Nelson is an legend if it comes to his engines...dude knows his shit.
All this time i thought i needed S38 or M54 ... LS1/3/7 is what i need
+M S38 the S38 is one hell of an engine, glad to see others than me appreciate it too :)
hobo.Saize420 Well sadly i've yet to drive an M5 e34, but i drive a 520i M20 :/
M S38 The M20 is classy mate, its easy to work on, cheap and reliable so whats the problem? :)
I agree with all the above, and it makes a great sound. But the 2.0 version with 129 hp and 170 nm of torque is a bit gutless for a 1500 kg car ! (but plenty of power on the wet without any traction control ! :)
VANOS POWER!
That is a very fascinating point that he made about stroked engines. Not only in the piston skirt unsupported, but it happens at the worst possible time. The function of a crankshaft is a sinusoidal wave, but the function of a piston is a sawtooth wave, and the two find maximum deviation at TDC and BDC when the connecting rod must absorb the gather and delay of compensating for the differences of the two functions.
Having your piston skirt exposed at the critical time of just before and after BDC is a formula for disaster, and I can't understand how so many people get away with it.
I don't know shit about engines or cars in general and this showed up on my feed, but Tom made this whole thing fascinating.
Please keep making this series! I love learning more about what goes into the design of cars and engines.
Dude makes some good points... I always here folks talk about building a coyote motor and my general response is "i didn't know you were rich?!". As much as folks talk shit about LS swaps they happen for a reason and most often that reason is performance to dollar. LS is hard to beat.
true. You swap an LS3 into any honda/Miata/s13, with FBO+Tune, and it immediately becomes a 10 second car. These engines are no joke and the amount of power these things can handle, on stock bottom end, is ridiculous(700whp, which is near 900hp at the crank, is considered "Safe" for Forced Induction). I have a 5th gen SS and imagine the amount of power it could have had if the weight was similar to the 4th's...
We break the suspension/diff's a lot more often than blowing the motor.... A mid camshaft swap is already pushing the Camaro into mid 11's on street tires(at 4k+ lbs with driver+gas)... There's plenty of Camaro's running 10's on a big GPI camshaft.
Corvette's, which sit at 3400lbs with driver+gas, is a pretty massive advantage with an engine like this.
I worked in drag racing industry with engines making 3000hp out of 500ci - this guys really knows his stuff. He thinks about all the pieces and there interaction with each other. Thats how its done in the racing world. Brilliant. He could design and build engines for any team out there.
I come back to this video every so often to gain more motivation to save money so one day I'll be able to customize my oldschool the way I want it! Love 68-69 chevrolet corvettes!
i love this video should do a Why is the 2JZ so good? next
+joseph martinez Yes plz
I'll second that... I'll take a 2JZ over a LS any day
+joseph martinez 2Jz is an overhyped engine.
PIG fat 600Lbs.
not fuel efficient
not small
not cheap to modify.
+saratov99 Since when? I love both motors and i own cars with both motors. The 2JZ really only runs into problems once its starts pushing like 600 wheel ftlbs of torque and there are plenty of guys running with 800whp on stock internals with no issues. both are literally Kings and Queens of motors....the 2jz being the queen of course.
all you guys are looking at my original post wrong. i never said the 2J was better, i was just saying they should do more videos like this one about other motors.
We call him..Motor Yoda
wow, 30 years building, racing and a shop owner, I wish WISH every guy I ever had walk in to the shop asking for a hotrod watches this.. Very elegant explanations...
Trying to educate about "combinations" is like digging holes in sand to most guys..
I bent the valves on my '94 Volvo 960 this month (again). I would love to put a LS in there, what a smile it puts on my face thinking about it! My buddy wants me to drop a forklift motor in it instead. The timing belt is so thin that year that I let it go too long, next year has better belt.
that mans knowledge is freaking sick
5 stars to you Nelson
First video in a while where they didn't tell me to go to /Drive+ ....this makes me wonder why Toyota doesnt sell 2JZ crate motors. The prices on 2JZ GTE's is getting ridiculous as the engine has aged. If they started remanufacturing them they could make a profit and it would lower the price. I can't imagine there isn't a market for that.
Agree 2jzgte are at different level for being manufactured in the 90's
+Pickle312 japan has a diffrent way of seeing there cars. what is out now can only be topped by next years model, they are to progressive to look back
+BigzeeeN Last iron block 2jz... Also new dodge hellcats v8 supercharger use iron block but thats the only one that use iron these days
+Pickle312 there isn't a market big enough for it, especially with the price of the v160.
+Pickle312
Because realistically to get a 2jz to do what LS's do would drive the cost of a crate motor to something ridiculous. Would be willing to pay 22k for a long block? A long block that's destined to grenade to begin with at that? 2jz's are awesomely capable but their issues start with their displacement and people's unrealistic expectations of what the motor is capable of.
just the best overview on LS I bet I will see. excellent work.
Very nice video thank you for the input on LS and basic motor head logic
The best part about an LS Swap is the hurt feeling when I lift the hood of my old Ford.
I get it! I am hesitant to replace the 50+ year old block in my Firebird. A friend once told me, "Its your car, do what ever the F&$% you want!" Don't ever build a car (or anything for that matter) to impress someone, you will always be chasing someone else's dream....
If it helps any, the overall architecture is way more similar to a FORD, it is Chevy way of imitation.
Nelson he's been around and he's pretty good. I had one of his engines and it was pretty stout. My big block big procharger stuff I have Scott "PAR" do. Nelson is a good boosted sbc guys.
I love my LS1, in Aussie the locally built Barra turbo charged straight six. They make huge power and good for six cylinder swap outs
When i was doing my LS swap on my corvette c4, the guy who was doing my build recommend that I change out the intake manifold into a shorter runner manifold as I was “ better “ than the factory manifold. After I complained about low end and mid range torque loss, I switched back to the factory intake manifold and noticed instant torque difference from low end to mid range torque. Apparently the manifold the guy gave me was mainly designed as a short runner, small plenum mainly for boosted applications that are only useful at high RPM. Watching this video just reaffirms everything.
i cannot buy an engine from them... i will buy a tshirt some day.
Lots of nice input in this video, unfortunately this doesn't apply to other countries.
V8 in junkyard ? Not even in dreams...
+spark972 Yeah, exactly what I thought! You will sometimes find V8's in junkyards where I live - they are almost always 1UZ-FE's from old Toyota's and Lexus's - which are good engines but hard to get big power out of, or possibly a shitty LT small block from a Holden Commodore.
+spark972 Same here.
And when there's one it gets ripped apart in 12 hours.
Yep, and here they get ripped apart by the guys that work at the yard before we get to even see them. Also any solid transmissions, gone before they are in sight. 😞
That sucks for you guys. There are hordes of LS engines in the junkyard thanks to all the pickups and SUVs from Chevy, GMC and Cadillac. Almost all the truck blocks are iron. 4.8L and 5.3L are a dime a dozen. I find them all the time with all the accessories, harness, ECU, and trans for about $1200 with 100k miles. Usually can get another 100k before the trans gives out, but the motor keeps going.
It's not so bad, 2jz, rb25 and Barra 270t are all easy to get here.
Very informative video. Thanks for your time Tom. : )

What's the song playing from 0:36?
LS, Coyote, JZ, all good engines

The part that discusses long stroke cranks is soooooo important. Tall deck block and keep that puppy where it's supposed to be! LS7 is extended the sleeves past the block. All of this is mentioned in his video! Smart man. Seriously, Nelson is no joke.
Fascinating stuff. I really enjoyed it. Thanks.
All I’m saying, I’ve never seen a ford engine swapped into anything, usually is out the door and replaced with a build hemi or ls.
The 9 inch GODFATHER or RearEnds.

...gotta have em tho
The 5.0 had a decent run back in the 90s. But then they went the modular OHC route vs GMs LS and lost any headway.
People were swapping 5.0s into Miatas for a while.
zaknefain100 lol not many. Who would do such a thing. Its heavy and it could barely fit in the engine bay. The LS is so small and light.
@@RBZ06LT6 well i don't disagree but it was a thing for a while. then again, the LSx wasn't yet on the scene. Believe there was an outfit doing the swaps... called it the Monster Miata.

300 hours per engine, at 100 bucks an hour that's a 30k a motor
and thats just labor...
if you want a twin turbo engine from this guy you need to spend at least 30k. Some of his engines are 60k or more.
Check out Nelson Racing Engines, they are great also

yeah but you can daily drive them and itll go from pump to vp fuel in a switch whenever you want. its worth it than spending 90k for a hellcat...

If your aren't familiar with what a brilliant man sounds like when he's found his true path in life, watch this. It's refreshing to hear somebody who is not only profoundly passionate about their given field of expertise, but also has the depth and accuracy and span of wisdom to match said passion. When you find the thing in life that youre MEANT to be doing, it often does not come with much difficulty, so while you might be working your ass off day in and day out, if the work you're producing doesn't flow out of your brain, and into the medium you are focusing you're efforts on as easily as air enters and exits your body, you might want to reassess your trade. To truly thrive in the world, as a member of the human race is a vividly difficult and nearly non existent phenomenon, so when you witness somebody in the midst of a brilliant life and career, it makes an impact on you in a way that's difficult to describe, but nonetheless extraordinarily beautiful to bear witness to. That we should all be so fortunate to find our paths, and to tread those paths with this caliber of brilliance. The phrase "God Speed" has never felt so poignant.
