Cleaver Restoration [Golden Cleaver With Golden Handle]

  • I have used two new techniques in the restoration of this rusty cleaver. The first time I use a hardening furnace for the blade to harden and I galvanize gold on the formerly rusty cleaver. I made the new handle out of Osage Orange and brass, which now revealed a completely gold cleaver. Restoring the old cleaver I had to drill, grind, file, remove rust and glue. This old hand tool I found again on a flea market website and wanted it badly.
    ▬ What did I do ?! ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
    The cleaver was badly rusted, so I put it in rust remover for a day. I removed the remaining rust with sandblasting. Afterwards I made the rough contour with a belt sander and sanded the sides until no more pitting was visible, up to a grit of 1500. With the help of a grinding stone I sharpened the cleaver again. Now I gilded the old hand tool with the help of electroplating. The new wooden handle is made of Osage Orange. Now all that was left was to assemble everything and the golden cleaver was ready.
    ▬ Good to know ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
    I used the following tools: Hammer, pliers, wire brush, sandblasting cabinet, corundum 0.2-0.8mm, belt sander, double-sided tape, orbital sander, multi-function tool, file, key file, hardening furnace, immersion heater, Rapeseed oil, forging pliers, stop angle, pen, steel ruler, saw, cordless screwdriver, drill, scriber, caliper, fretsaw, two-component glue, screw clamps, sandpaper (various grits), polishing bench, grindstone, galvanic current device, degreaser, activator, gold electrolyte

    The gold electroplating was a cool little extra! I'd recommend shaving down that handle considerably more - the chunky, square handle has got to feel like a nightmare to hold in your hand 😱

    Interesting handle choice there. Almost looks like it’d be fairly uncomfortable to hold. And Thats a very neat way of applying a gold plating!

    I was so with you until the last few minutes. I guess this is more of an art piece than a tool, which is fine, but not for me. You will probably forget more knowledge about crafting and restoration than I'll ever know, so I won't pretend to be an expert, but it drives me crazy to watch people put these razor sharp, super delicate bevels on cleavers like they're a paring knife. And to go through all that work and leave the handle a massive rectangle? It seems like you've got some pretty big hands so maybe it works for you, but man that ending was so anticlimactic.

    What is that crusty stuff that came off when it was put in the oil?

    • @CatalystRestorations
      @CatalystRestorations Před 2 lety

      That is an oxidation layer that was formed during the heating of the steel. Also called 'scale'. It's very brittle and tends to flake off during quenching. Perfectly normal but not something you'd ever want to leave on the steel for a knife like this. You can wrap the blade in steel foil or use an inert gas furnace to minimize oxidation during heat treatments.

    • @Scott_G
      @Scott_G Před 2 lety

      @@CatalystRestorations That's cool! Thanks for answering! And the quenching is to soften or harden the steel? Cool it slow to make it softer and cool it fast to harden it?

    • @CatalystRestorations
      @CatalystRestorations Před 2 lety

      @@Scott_G It technically depends on what type of steel you are dealing with, but in general the faster you cool (quench) the harder the steel. Quenched steel is usually very brittle though (good strength, but can't absorb a lot of energy before breaking, AKA material toughness ), so after quenching you usually heat it back up again (lower temperature this time, called tempering) to soften it up just a bit to keep most of the strength but also improve the toughness and give you the best of both worlds!

    • @Scott_G
      @Scott_G Před 2 lety
