Hong Kong protests: what's at stake for China?

This protester calls himself “Bruce”. We’ve hidden his face and obscured his voice to protect his identity. He’s one of the millions of Hong Kongers taking to the streets.
What started as a protest against an extradition bill has become the most serious challenge to the Communist Party’s authority since the Tiananmen Square protest three decades ago. As the demonstrations enter a third month neither the government nor the protesters is willing to back down.
But it’s not enough to deter the demonstrators. So what happens now?
Hong Kong is one of the most important financial centres in the world. And it has a unique status. It’s a city in China but it’s not entirely Chinese. It has its own currency, its own passport… its own legal system. There’s even a boundary between Hong Kong and the rest of China and you need a permit to cross it. This is all down to its history.
In 1842 Hong Kong was ceded by the Chinese to the British after the first Opium War. But in 1997 Britain gave it back to China. With one important condition - for 50 years Hong Kong was to be governed under what is known as “one country, two systems”. The chief executive who runs Hong Kong would be appointed by a pro-Chinese committee. But the city was guaranteed a high degree of autonomy with its own government, legal system and economic independence until 2047. Over the past decade those rights have been eroded.
Fuller democracy, promised as part of the handover agreement has yet to be granted by China.
China’s grip has got ever tighter. In 2012 the government tried to install a patriotic pro-Chinese education system. Then five Hong Kong booksellers who sold material banned in mainland China disappeared. In 2016 pro-democracy opposition leaders were thrown out of Hong Kong’s parliament for insulting China when swearing their oaths. And then in February this year the government introduced a bill which would have allowed extradition to the mainland.
All this is fuelling the protesters’ anger.
As the protests get larger and more violent the chance of China intervening increases. Beijing has made thinly veiled threats to send in its military forces - the People’s Liberation Army.
In 1989 a student demonstration in Beijing ended in massacre. Hundreds, maybe thousands, were shot dead. For the Chinese government the Hong Kong demonstrators are defying the authority of a Communist leadership that cannot tolerate defiance. Another fear is some protesters’ demand for full independence. But military intervention would be a very risky strategy for Beijing
In 1993 Hong Kong’s GDP accounted for more than a quarter of mainland China’s. Today China’s remarkable rise means that Hong Kong’s economic output makes up less than 3% of the mainland’s. But Hong Kong remains important for China. Multinationals use it as a launch pad to the mainland and it gives Chinese companies access to the rest of the world.
So how the turmoil is resolved matters to more than just the people of Hong Kong.
This all comes at a time when China and America are waging a trade and technology war. Bloodshed on Hong Kong’s streets would make relations deteriorate even further. Beijing is now blaming outsiders for the trouble.
For China the situation has become much more than a dispute over a law. It’s become an existential threat. Bruce and the other protesters are holding their breath.
China’s Communist rulers must choose between two mortal dangers - the collapse of economic stability and prosperity, or the acceptance that protests can limit the Party’s absolute power.

Interesting thing here is that most ppl here on youtube don't understand the difference between Central government and Local Government of China. Even both of them want stable, the reason and next steps are different.
Local gov for sure wish HK can be "special" as usual so they can still enjoy economical and financial benefits like tax free, low cost water and electricity, etc. Also they can sit still on their seats. That's why they quickly responded to protestors on 9/July, stoped the unwelcoming bill.
But the protestors are not stop when they see good. Now the election system they want is pointing to the center gov. The central gov is different, they want one China stable. If they see any possible situation affect stableness, they will stop it no matter if it will hurt the HK economy. Of course the scene of 30 years ago will not be once more, the central gov are smart, fool them once? ... What they already started is a quiet "letting go", check out the new policy towards Shenzhen and what happened to Shenzhen stock market today.
Maybe these young protestors will eventually get what they want now(a election system even the most democratic US doesn't have), but if things lead to that way, Hongkong will for sure lose their future, economically.

That's what originally started the protests. Now the protests have become more than just the withdrawal of the extradition law. They're generally pro-democracy protests and the protesters have 5 demands which are the complete withdrawal of the extradition bill, the withdrawal of state media usage of the word 'riot' to describe the protests, the release of detained protesters and their charges be dropped, an inquiry into the police behaviour and how they've dealt with the situations, and genuine elections where China doesn't choose the leadership candidates (who are all pro-Beijing) before the HK people can vote.

Chinese citizens kind of "trade" their political rights and liberty for a better life, and they definitely get it. There are NO other countries that can improve the life quality of its people so fast in the world.
Still, Chinese citizens desire and fight for their political rights and liberty. However, they will NEVER NEVER give up their life quality for it.
So you see, before the HK riots, Chinese people complained to their government about the great firewall, financial scam, food safety and so on. But after the HK riots, they
put down the complaint and unit under the banner of CCP.

      @huyifan83 Před 4 lety +7

Actually the only thing those riots can do is to sacrifice themselves by ruining their own city, to unite amost all Chinese people from all over the world. CCP is very constrained and they did nothing wrong at all in this incident. The extradition law is not only righteous but also neccessary. It's nothing about human rights nor has it anything to do with ordinary people. It's just for felonies, murderers etc. Political and religious offenders are not inluded. All those claims of "oppression" and "violence" of the protesters are just from their suspisions and illusions. The fact is that they never happpened! They are just worried it is going to happen, without any evidence or facts! So they break into police office and congress hall, accuse the government for something they haven't done at all using violence, and beat police to a pulp. And they claim that Hong Kong is a city ruled by law, they don't want Chinese goverment to "interfere" their own law system. Excuse me?

@@littleknownperfection694Indeed, in some aspects, for now, the US is better. However, first, I said, "improve". China just has reformed and opened for 30 years. Check its economic growth, tech development and go see how its people living with your own eye. Because in some aspects, life in China is kind of unprecedented and unimaginable.
First is about public transit. It is so convenient that the car seems useless. high-speed railways take 1 hour from NY to Washington, D.C and cost about 10$. And try search any Chinese City name+subway map on google. The subway system in china is much more advanced, about 2 generations better than in the NY and boston. (Without a strong government those huge projects are impossible)
Second is about logistics. Demographic dividend greatly boosts the logistics industry, you can get things you buy from the internet in half a day (as long as you live in a big city) and ask delivery from a restaurant or supermarket in 30 minutes, and the delivery is usually FREE. (Without a huge population those Conveniences are impossible)
Internet industry grows fast samely because of the demographic dividend and a market protected by the government (Though I hate Google been banned in China) In cities like Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen many convenient shops stop receiving cash because they just need to scan your face. They start using 5G which could be faster than wifi. (Without an open mind about privacy and technology, the development of those techs are impossible)
Those things are what you could NEVER get in America.

Or rather, the alternative is too horrible. It sounds as though Chinese totalitarianism has refined its methods since Mao, but it remains absolutely committed to evil. The 'communists' have no fear of God, and it says in the Bible that 'fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.' Also the person who does not fear God will have a hard time loving other human beings made 'in God's image'. He will only be able to 'love' others in condition of total agreement with his agenda. Obviously human freedom is not possible under those terms.

Speaking of which, why is Australia, a vast resourceful Continent in Asia-Pacific, only a few hundred miles away from South-East Asia had no Asian-Pacific Islanders in that vast land originally, historically inhabiting when Anglo British, some 10,000 miles away England, sailed half the world away, and looted in late 18th century? This doesn't make sense, since Asian-Pacific Islanders originally and historically inhabiting and residing in Pacific such as Guam, Tonga, New Zealand, Tahiti, Fiji and Hawaii? Speaking of New Zealand, why did these same Anglo British, sailed half way around the world and looted in late 18th century? Why didn't they occupy beautiful fertile Iceland, right above them just a short distant away, with hardly any people there? 1. Everyone has the right to express themselves, but who gives those thugs the right to occupy airports, hospitals, legislative yuan and disturb the quiet life of ordinary people? 2. Western media reporters only focus their cameras on the police. You can see the police chasing the thugs, but you can't see dozens of thugs beating up a lone Hong Kong police officer. 3. Independence is a crime in every country's basic law! What part of the country would like to be independent?

    • @hosackies
      @hosackies Před 4 lety +1

      1. Thanks for understanding basic human rights, no one "gives" these people the right to do anything, they are free to do it. And they have to find the most effective ways to get their message across. Hey that girl that you've been crushing over for all this time, are you just going to sit at home and scream about it, or are you going to go to her and let her know? Same idea, hope you can relate to that analogy.
      2. The cameras are on the police because they're the ones with guns and smoke bombs? Any damage inflicting aggression have been and will be initiated by them. I agree some protesters are angry and violent, but the majority of the clashes are police brutality.
      3. Of course claiming independence is against the law in any country, it's called self interest and self preservation. Please name one Chinese dynasty that wasn't classified as outlaws by the previous dynasty that they took over. Mao and his group of villagers were all considered criminals in the 40s by the Republic of China, but now that the CCP controls China, they are not criminals anymore. It's just history repeating itself, don't be alarm.

Journalism should be objective, and show violence on BOTH sides, instead of spinning the narrative. 3. I don't see the Economist supporting Ireland or Whales or Scotland and their quest for independence, even though british conquest was just as bloody and terrible as "chinese brutality". Wonder why.

By your standard of comparison, we should say that the camps in Xinjiang by your government is like the camps of Hitler. We should start a new war to deal with that then.
And no, I don't buy the nonsense excuse that these are 're-education' camps. There is plenty of evidence to the contrary, as there has always been for whichever 're-education' camp that pops up in Communist countries. If you object that they're all forged, consider the Soviet-era camps, which are documented by Soviet-era documents, recognized by Russians and written on by Russian scholars.
You seem to like saying things with no evidence. Is that what you did in school too - write random nonsense on an essay or exam? Where is this evidence that the US is funding the HK protests? Do you realize the events in Yemen, Syria, and Egypt involve millions more than the entire population of HK and of a much larger scale? If you believe what you're saying, which I doubt as it seems you're simply spewing nonsense, you should really say the US/UK should support HK more so they get more of the 'funding' that you claim to go elsewhere...
Oh, and if you say all my evidence is 'forged' or fake, then I can do the same thing and say whatever 'evidence' you have and walk away logically justified...

Actually Beijing has one more option, that is to let HK down sooner, and they've decided to do it yet. Hong Kong's economic boost in 20th century actually based on the separation between China and the rest of the world, so as a western city in the Eastern culture it quickly took advantage of factory resetting and a entry for foreign companies into mainland. But after one century of development, too much upper-classes running HK as their own city, the city now belongs to local rich. After the industry upgrading, now serve as a tourism and financial city, HK's economy relies too much on China just like every small country and region in East Asia, it's unique but not irreplaceable. Beijing may need to pay a lot in economy and politics and even authorities to replace Hongkong with Shenzhen or Shanghai, but sure it can. And that's a bigger crisis HongKong people will need to face in 5 to 10 yrs, much sooner than 2047.

What did Hong Kong do when it returned to China in 1997? Most schools are educating students to hate China, and there is no patriotic education in Hong Kong. Only Qiuguo Education. In contrast, Macao, returning to China in 1999, the same one country, two systems, Macao people have a high degree of governance and own laws, their own police, Macao passed the fugitive offenders regulations in 2009 and safeguarded Article 23 of the National Security Law, why Macao has no problem now, No one is engaged in illegal activities and sent to China?
What is Article 23 of the National Security Law? The Special Administrative Region should enact legislation to prohibit any treason, secession, sedition, subversion of the Central People’s Government and theft of state secrets. It prohibits foreign political organizations or groups from conducting political activities in the Special Administrative Region. It is forbidden to establish political organizations or groups of special administrative regions to establish contacts with foreign political organizations or groups. 》
Does your country not prohibit other countries from splitting your country!
However, the Hong Kong opposition has been opposed to this bill in 2003-2016. Why does the opposition object to this bill?
It has not been passed until now. It is obvious that Hong Kong is a place where there is no law prohibiting foreign forces from engaging in or helping to split the country.
They have the freedom to march, yes. However, most of the media you have seen are anti-China. Does the freedom of parade include beating the police, beating the public, destroying the public's vehicles, attacking the police's defense line, and preventing people's freedom of movement (Hong Kong airport incident) from being beaten by people with inconsistent political views? A Chinese tourist said that Mandarin was beaten for 4 hours and was dizzy. A reporter said that support for the police was beaten into a concussion
You can also see the demonstrators throwing bows, incendiary bombs, smoke bombs, baseball bats and other debris into the police. The Hong Kong police I have seen so far have been quite restrained.

The Opium war where HK was originally seceded to UK was fought because China was trying to stop UK from selling opium in China. This literal war on drugs was lost humiliatingly and you can bet that China never forgot it. HK was colonized under such unjust circumstances that there is not going to be any sympathy now for calls of independence or show of fondness for British rule.
I never understood why these HK protestors expect universal suffrage when they didn't even have that as a British colony. It's not something that they had and then lost. They didn't have it in the more freedom-friendly British rule, so needless to say they are not going to have it under Chinese rule.
The city has been facing many economic and social problems, including housing shortage and losing its financial center status, but this is where the leaderless protests fail, because they just know they're unhappy but can't articulate their real demands.

Yet, the uninformed HK protesters turn to the US as the saviour for democracy. Have these protesters gone mad? Can't they see beyond the slogans and face the real facts staring them in the face.

I've been thinking that if the same thing with this magnitude happened on American soil, lethal forces might have been already deployed at a much earlier stage. After all numerous innocent people get killed every year by American police simply because one or two body movements look like they are reaching for a weapon that does not actually even exist, or because they're colored and thus 'naturally' more prone to be dangerous, etc etc. Whereas in Hong Kong, even with the protests elevated to such a degree that the public safety and normal order of the city have been greatly jeopardized, the kind of violent intervention of Chinese armed forces that everyone talked about has never materialized. Try this in America and see how it goes.

“Democracy is a con game. It’s a word invented to placate people to make them accept a given institution. All institutions sing, ‘We are free.’ The minute you hear ‘freedom’ and ‘democracy’, watch out… because in a truly free nation, no one has to tell you you’re free.“

"The reason why democracy constantly touts about it's freedoms is because everyone who who has searched for freedom knows it is not a right that is given but taken from those who would rather have the monopoly on it. Freedom requires an unbending attitude and sacrifice in order to be maintained, and those who would vilify it are either in the business of undermining it or have completely forgotten what was lost in order to attain it."
