The 1988 Hairspray mentioned above was the original iteration of this story, a nonmusical movie directed by Baltimore indie legend John Waters (with Ricki Lake as Tracy). When the stage musical was created in 2002, it did indeed honor that tradition (Harvey Fierstein played the role on Broadway).

Idk if someone already said it but the Flasher in “Good morning Baltimore” is played by John Waters who wrote the original 1988 film stating the incredible drag queen Divine and Ricki Lake (who actually makes a cameo as one of the talent agents that comes to miss hairspray competition).
The tradition of hairspray (as said by the director of this version) is that Edna is always played by a man in homage to Divine, and Tracy is always played by plus sized girl (as opposed to casting a smaller girl and padding her, which apparently was considered for a second before the director vetoed the idea)

My only recollection was that Travolta was the mom who hadn't left the house in many years. So, needless to say, I was shocked by the story being heavily focused on racism. Anyways, when it got to I Know Where I've Been, I had a feeling it was familiar, but I couldnt place it. It wasn't until near the end with her long note and when the chorus comes in that it clicked. It was on Glee with Unique, Beiste, and the trans people. That was a great performance.

So, the original Hairspray was a John Waters film in the 80's that became a bit of a cult classic. Then, in the early 2000's they created a Broadway musical adaption that got really popular and won a bunch of awards, and so they made THIS movie version of the stage musical in 2007. ABC also did one of their "filmed live for tv" versions in like 2015? 2016? Ariana Grande played Penny (Amanda Bynes's character) and was actually able to sing it the way its written, without all the cuts this version did. Lol. (Just a little bit of shade to Amanda Bynes. I was obsessed with the original Hairspray as a kid. I used to watch it all the time. When this one came out, I was like, no thanks. When I got older, I finally gave it a chance and I really enjoyed it. I doesn't overtake the original for me because the cast was ICONIC!! I definitely think y'all should check it out. RIP Twitch too. Somehow I didn't realize he was in this movie and I was devastated by his passing.

tWitch was a finalist on the competition show "So You Think You Can Dance". I don't recall if he won his season, but he was definately a fan favorite, and was called back to partner other competing dancers in later season. He also danced with Michelle Obama when she introduced her national fitness campaign. tWitch was a DJ on Ellen DeGeneris' talk show (he later became an executive producer), and was also a judge in the last couple of seasons of "So You Think You Can Dance". Everyone was shocked when he was found dead in a hotel room in December of 2022, the victim of an apparent suicide.

What a pleasant surprise to see this video pop up subscriptions! I saw the 80s movie at a girls birthday party when I was like 12... then when this version came out I had just graduated high school and I believe felt I was to cool to watch it but ended up LOVING it! Anyone else get chills when her parents get to see her debut on the show? The ending number also gives me chills every time I watch!

The original 80's movie wasn't a musical, then it was made into a Broadway musical, then the musical was made into this movie. That has happened with a lot of movies, for example Little Shop of Horrors and the upcoming Mean Girls musical movie

This musical is actually a remake of the original John Waters film “Hairspray” which was not originally a musical. That movie starred Ricki Lake; Jerry Stiller was in that movie as well.
Also, a fun Easter egg in this movie is that John Waters himself made a cameo in this musical as the “Flasher who lives next door” in that first song “Good Morning Baltimore”.

The flasher in the intro is John Waters. He put together the 1988 Hairspray movie. Don't watch the original with expectations of being the same. Same plot beats, but very different vibe. John Waters is known for his cult classics. They're known for being off beat and even offensive at times. He is known for always pushing the envelope to put it mildly. So for him to cameo as a flasher in a fairly family-friendly movie is very appropriate

It kickstarted my love for vintage 50s and 60s clothing too. Had a huge crush on Zac Efron after this too. I annoyed my whole family by playing and singing along to this soundtrack CD after I was supposed to have been in bed. This movie is pure nostalgia for me and honestly it never gets old for me.

To answer your question about Edna yes she has always been played in drag! ❤ the original film had the legendary drag queen Divine play her, then Harvey Fierstein originated her on Broadway (Michael Ball originated after on the West End) and like you see John Travolta played her in the film version of the musical ❤

John Travolta was doing a baltimore accent. I'm not sure why he was the only one who did it but it's honestly not awful. I'm not sure if the line 'I left my iron on' is in the original play or if they threw it in there because iron is so specific in the baltimore accent. it's like 'coffee' for new york or 'park my car' for boston

I like the message in this movie; everyone is equal and is respected. In Grease, it's less interresting. Sandy had to change so Danny can accept her; he changes a little at the end but as soon as he sees her, he removed his white jacket. I think it means that he doesn't need to make efforts in their relation, only Sandy has. That's awful! He also forced her to kiss him after he gave her a ring and didn't appologise... if he did, that wasn't sincere. That's how i saw his reaction. He's a jerk, she deserved better than him 🙂

lOVE YOU GUYS, AND THIS MOVIE!... I wanted to share a couple fun things about this movie that people might not have noticed/know. The 'FLASHER that lives next door' during 'Good Morning Baltimore', is played by John Waters, who wrote Hairspray, and produced the 1988 movie. He rose to fame in the early 70s for his transgressive cult films, like Pink Flamingos (1972) and Female Trouble (1974). He wrote and directed Polyester (1981), Cry-Baby (1990), Serial Mom (1994), Pecker (1998), and Cecil B. Demented (2000). The female talent scout in the audience at the Miss Hairspray taping, was played by Ricki Lake, who had her own talk show, and actually played the role of Tracy Turnblad in the 1988 film. Amber Von Tussle was played by Brittany Snow, who also played Chloe (vocal nodes) in the Pitch Perfect movies.
