Unexpected, but very happy about this reaction! haha Zac Efron didn't sing in this first movie, Drew Seeley sang for him. But, in High School Musical 2 and 3, Zac Efron is the one singing
Yeah because Disney didn’t think his voice was good enough and if I’m not mistaken I remember him saying he didn’t even know that they had dubbed his singing till the movie was out

The truth is that Disney had designed the songs in a different vocal register than Zac Efron for the first film, that's why they used the other guy. But in the second and third movies the songs were created for her vocal range and she sang them all without a problem. Kind of lucky because the songs in 2 and 3 are incredible and we all know that Zac was the right choice.
@@stefannypita7415 Yeah, the songs were written for a tenor while Zac is a baritone. Honestly, Drew did a LOT of singing for Disney. He even dubbed for Taran Killam in Stuck In The Suburbs.
I believe Zac sings just a few lines a the beginning and end of Start of Something New and Breaking Free, the lower bits

Born in '05 so I never saw them as a KID kid but the trilogy was kind of re-released in 2016 for the 10 year anniversary and I was lucky to see them then. Ever since they've been a big part of my life and I still listen to the soundtrack a whole lot even if I can't make it through the movies without cringing 😂😂

The songs in the first movie were written before Zac Efron was cast in the lead and his voice didn't really fit those songs, so Drew Seeley sang most of them, and Zac only sang a couple of lines. That's his real voice when he's on Gabriella's balcony, trying to talk her into forgiving him, and on the stage when she gets stage fright and he's trying to convince her to sing. Since they knew that he would be playing the lead in the other two movies, the songs were written for him and he does all of the singing in those two.

TV critics dubbed this film “Grease: The Next Generation.”
And not to mention how much this DCOM (Disney Channel Original Movie) musical created such an impact on many people, shows, or movies. They can’t deny High School Musical really became a phenomenon and affected the musical format in the mid-2000s.
That's funny because the movie was originally supposed to be the third Grease movie and was supposed to star Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake as the children of Danny and Sandy from the original. The plot was virtually the same as HSM but with more similarities to Grease. Sharpay was supposed to be Rizzo's daughter (producers tried to get Christina Aguilera for the part but she declined). Justin Timberlake's band mates from *NSYNC were supposed to have supporting roles, and John Travolta & Olivia Newton-John to possibly have cameos.
When i was addicted to the first movie my mom couldnt take me listening so much to the songs so she showed me grease for the first time and said it was the HSM of her time
@@heidos7 After 'Grease 2' bombed, I'm glad that Paramount didn't move forward with that film. Instead, we got 'Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies' (TV series).

There is an episode of Suit life of Zack and Cody where they put on the musical of high school musical. In the episode they constantly tell Maddie (Ashley Tisdale) that she looks nothing like Sharpay. It's so funny.

When I tell you this was my LIFE as a child. This came out when I was 6 (born in 2000). The second one debuted on Disney when i had family in town so my mom recorded it ON VHS so i could watch it later. And my dad, bless his soul, sat through the HSM3 in theaters with me after my parents surprised me with tickets. Literally my entire childhood and such a comfort trilogy.
This is so weird, but my story is almost exactly the same as yours 😂 it was my whole life, I filmed the first one on VHS because we had a family party that night, and my dad took me to see #3!! Except I’m older than you I was born in 92😂😂

I still have all the choreo memorized to We're All In This Together. Back when the first two movies first came out Disney channel used to have specials where the cast mates taught all the choreography to the different songs

As a child, high school musical was the (live action) movie that made me realize I enjoy musicals. It was also one of the first instances of encountering subjected gender norms, what is expected out of boys and their interests as I was going to school.
The sheer accurate irony. Perhaps that's among the reasons the movie is so beloved and exploded the way it did.

Fun fact coach Bolton aka Bart Johnson is married to Blake lively sister Robin lively so Ryan Reynolds’s is his brother in law. Some people already pointed out that drew sung for Troy voice but Zac did sing a few lines in each song but fully sang in the next 2 movies.
Seeing Greg enjoy this so much made me incredibly giddy LMAO. Feels like the same unexpected effect that the Trolls movie had on him. The sequels really ramp up on the performances im so damn excited for those reactions.

Way back, I'm an avid fan of this trilogy, they even have world tours because of their success on these. So I memorized their songs BUT to this date, I forgot them but when I hear the songs there is like a hidden compartment in my brain that immediately made me remember the lyrics.
This movie holds a special place in my heart. It came out when I was going into high school and I got diagnosed with Lupus that year so this was a movie that when I saw it helped bring a smile to my face in the hard moments. It’s fun, it’s cheesy and I love musicals. I’ll love this movie always no matter what.

they actually did film this on location (at least in part)! that is a real high school in Albuquerque, and it's now famous thanks to hsm haha. sharpay's pink locker is even still there

High School Musical was my whole personality when I was 16.
It was so huge the 3rd movie got a theatrical release, and I actually went to watch it at least 3 times and cried at the end during all of them.
So unexpected but my heart couldn’t be happier!! I grew up with this whole trilogy!! I had the birthday cake,apron,CD,dolls and I sung “the start of something new “ for my school talent show (both parts). It was what made me want to sing and act and dance!! So when people say it’s cringy when they were going off when they were young to it is funny always. It’s okay to have fun and like something !

Drew Seeley actually sang for Zac in the first film(also co wrote Getcha head in the game) & then because Zac was doing hairspray he couldn't do the HSM tour so they brought in Drew to take over for him on the tour. Drew also was in another DCOM Stuck In The Suburbs & sang for Taran Killams character too.

The phenomenal TV musical film! Long before Zac Efron shot it big in many movies, his musical days were notable! Still remember watching this on Disney Cruise Lines on Christmas 2006. It played frequently on the main deck’s large screen during my stay there with family.
I know Efron had to lip-sync most of the songs here due to not being able to hit the high notes at the time. So the work of a singing double was required back then. He was just getting started.
This was filmed in Utah, at east high school 🥰 I live down the street! So not LA, but definitely not New Mexico lol
The director, Kevin Ortega, wanted to have Ryan be gay, but Disney, of course, said no, but they still kept him pretty flamboyant.. in the 2nd movie, theres like a fan conspiracy that Ryan and Chad have a relationship, which i personally like to believe, but its not ever proven

The High School Musical movies are some of the best DCOMs. These movies were my childhood and where our obsession with Zac Efron began. He's an incredible actor and you can see his potential in these movies even though they're cheesy sometimes. Please react to the other two movies, they get better and so do the songs!

I expect you to react to 2 and 3 obviously, BUT also Sharpay's fabulous adventure, an often overlooked movie that shows sharpay as who she always was an ambitious girl, but not the villain. Cuz Troy gets everything he wants cuz he's more popular and Gabriella never cares about performing, it's just for fun while Sharpay and Ryan both want a theatre career after highschool
bruh Sharpay is literally a villain, stop blaming Troy or Gabriella. Sharpay is spoiled, narcissistic, selfish even with her brother whom she doesn't respect, she sees the world as lackeys at her service and she is intrusive and has no limits in manipulating and interfering in people's lives to make trouble just for a role. Sharpay has always had everything on a silver platter, stop lying, she thinks she is the only one who can audition and get lead female roles and has since started school. She always had the main roles. She can't stand competition or even someone stealing the spotlight so for once the roles go to someone else it's trying to make her look like a victim lol.
So excited to see Greg and Tara react to this movie! This movie is funny! 👍

this came out 10 days before my 15th birthday and i was THEE target audience for it lol but for some reason most of my classmates made me feel like it was for kids?? we WERE kids??? i burned the album and listened to it constantly lmao vividly remember my 15th birthday sleepover we just had it playing quietly on loop in the background while we gossiped and ate snacks. ah, high school.
the third movie when they graduated came out my senior year so me and three friends went to our old movie theater for a late showing in our pjs and had the entire theater to ourselves and we cried. core memory!! will cherish it forever.
i still, to this day, listen to this music. it's undeniably good and people who disagree hate fun!!

He also made a show called Julie and The Phantoms that only got one season 👎🏻🙄 but it was sooo good and loved! They auditioned and put together a band of teens/young adults they hoped would eventually actually tour eventually and was full of awesome talent and original songs!
These movies were HUGE for Disney! I remember them having a sing along night with the lyrics on screen and a dance along night when they broke down the dance moves for the last dance number

Say what you want, but Breaking Free is an absolute banger! When I was younger that final performance on the stage was freaking HYPE!!!
So glad you guys are reacting to this movie. Such a great musical, I love all the songs. Yes, Vanessa voice does give you chills at times. This was my daughter's favorite movie and we watched all the time.
The movie is set in Albuquerque,New Mexico, but it was actually filmed in Salt Lake City, Utah where there is an actual high school called East High School

Im 43 now so when this came out i was many years too old for its target audience. How i love a good musical and my cousin and his friend were the perfect age for this so i got to watch them often. Me and some friends even went to the cinema to see the third one on release. They are such feel good films.
I don’t think I’ve ever clicked faster for a reaction… wasn’t expecting this movie. But I grew up with it & still bust out these songs now. 😂😂😂 Hope you guys watch 2 and 3!
