Best of the Month! MTB Components (Ep. 9.22)

- Fall is here, and so is another episode of Best of the Month MTB Parts & Accessories! This month we have some exciting new products to showcase, as well as some others that have been around for a while but are still as relevant as ever. First up is some gorgeously machined cranks from Ride 5Dev that look like they came off a spaceship. Which makes sense, because 5th Axis machines parts for the aerospace industry right down in San Diego. These cranks feature SRAM's DUB Spindle as well as their 3 bolt direct mount chainring interface, so you don't have to worry about some new standard being invented in the biking industry. Next up is the coolest frame strap you've ever seen, the WC x Occam frame strap. This strap is infused with BOA technology so it's easy to install and remove from your bike, as well as adjust the tension so your stuff never slides around on your bike. Not to mention it's got a beautiful topo design and WC logo so people can see that you know what's up. Speaking of knowing what's up, the new ZEB ultimate is also trending this month. This new fork features RockShox's Charger 3 damper as well as their new Buttercup technology and lower leg bleeder valves to equalize the pressures and keep your fork feeling plush. Speaking of suspension, Buzzy's Slick Honey has also found its way into this month's top MTB products. This grease is a necessity for all sorts of suspension and dropper post related service and is essential to have in your MTB service arsenal. Next up on the list is Deity's Deftrap composite flat pedals. These pedals are the composite version of the brand's famous TMAC pedals, designed in collaboration with freeride legend Tyler McCaul. They feature a large concave platform, sealed bearings, and replaceable pins so you can keep them going for years and years. Rounding out our components for this month is SRAM's spare battery for eTap & AXS drivetrains. It's always handy to have an extra one of these just in case you forgot to charge your battery the night before a ride, or if you happen to run the battery out on the trail. Up next is arguably the coolest hat in the world, and that's the WC Globe snapback. This hat is ventilated so you can keep your cool no matter the activity, and look cool while doing it. Speaking of looking cool, you'll want to check out our last product that we're featuring, and that's our new KETL Virtue shorts in the 12" inseam. This new short is updated and optimized for MTB and is extremely comfortable and versatile.

A fresh layer of dust…house dust.
Markhor fork to resurrect an old Spesh Hardrock, in addition to a complete 12s Shimano drivetrain, new headset, stem and big honkin 35mm bar. So, prettry much half a new bike, lol. Still way less expensive than a new bike with similar components. Bought the fork from y'all, thanks!

5DEV crank is the best and awesome 💪
Have been riding 5Dev cranks for over 6 months now and love them (was also considering ee wings). They were awesome to work with, plus they were one of very few manufacturers that make crank lengths down to 135mm. I ordered the 155mm size and have had ZERO pedal strikes on my full squish since. Recommend them 💯….the only downside, I should have waited to order the Kashima finish.

I agree about the battery. I keep a spare on my bike because you never know when you might be able to afford to get AXS.
The Occam strap is my favorite mtb accessory by far
Upgraded from a DVO Onyx to the Zeb Ultimate. First ride in Pisgah straight from the bike shop a mile away. So good.
was the onyx old? does it feel like an upgrade? IM getting a new bike and tought of getting the onyx. do you not recommend it?

Upgraded my front and rear suspension to Fox 38 and Float X2 on my Turbo Levo. Because of larger piggy reservoir of the new shock, I've compromised accessibility to my water bottle cage and I no longer able to fit one in there. So, i've opted for a 16 oz KEG Storage Vessel that perfectly fits in there and use it to carry extra tube, a few patches and other miscellaneous things.
Just bought the 5dev kashima edition cranks and chain ring from you guys to go with my new Revel Ranger.
Looking fwd to next week - 5DEV releases the 34T chainring.

Curious about these Occam straps. Does the ratchet system have enough strength to continuously tighten those wires into a carbon frame to the point of fracturing the carbon layup?

Love the Virtue shorts -- I have three pairs. Did you happen to widen the loop where the buckle hook goes? Mine tend to catch on the inside of the loop, but there's no extra room to slide it over to escape whatever is snagging it. Perhaps in version 4? I don't see any engineering reason what that loop needs to be the exact size of the hook. Good stuff, though. Dig 'em.
Hey Jason, stoked that you're loving the Virtue shorts. Do you have the V3 12" shorts? We updated the loop on those shorts, whereas the V2 in both inseams had that smaller loop. We also have a V3 of the 9" short which will hit the site soon with the widened loop :)

How long until the boas fail/loosen? I've used a handful of seatbags using that and they all loosen after a few rides. Have to throw an EDC strap over it to keep it on there.

I hate the way the 5dev cranks look. I'm a machinist and the extremely 2d look just doesn't do it for me. Especially because of who made them. Those guys are in a leauge of their own in the manufacturing space. The stem and sprocket look the part.
