    this makes it seem like panic attacks are always caused by something avoidable, but the fact of the matter is that they can be 100% random.

    No disrespect to this story or anybody else who has overcome panic disorders and depression through therapy alone, but I look at the comments and see so many people bashing on medication as if taking medication means you aren't strong enough to function on your own. No, medication is not for everybody, a lot of people can function happily without it, and therapy should be used to coincide with medication, not in place of it. However, taking medication does not make you any weaker of a person. If it works for you, then it works for you.
    As somebody who suffered from 2-3 severe level panic attacks a day, including one that ended in a 911 call, and depression, self harm, and general anxiety, I've been on medication for about 8 months now and can happily say that it has changed my life so much. I rarely ever have panic attacks and my thoughts of extreme anxiety, self harm, and depression are incredible rare. Medication does not make you weak guys (:

      @ovulatinggrashopper4703 Před 5 lety +5

      i agree. medications work for people who are more severely depressed or chemically imbalanced. they dont explain as much about the use of medication as they should and it causes people to discontinue treatment or refuse it all together. depression can have many different causes and i feel that doctors should take the time to properly evaluate the causes of depression before determining whether or not medication is the way to go. you cant control everything about how your brain works so medication doesnt make you weak. often times people just need some good cognitive behavioral therapy for their anxiety and depression and doctors tend to use medication along side that to help balance out the chemicals in the brain to make it easier on the whole process, but even then its all about that individuals needs, some people can overcome depression and anxiety on their own or through cognitive behavioral therapy but that does not work for everyone and seeing as these are conditions that are caused by many different things, you shouldnt ever think of someone as weak for needing assistance because you dont know what they are suffering through

    I used to get panic attacks in my early 20s for some unknown reason. I thought I was dying of a heart attack and just sat there in class accepting it with fear I might embarrass myself. The bouts only lasted about a year. Every year since, my anxiety has gone down and the older I get the less I care about what anyone around me thinks.

And one time I felt like I was having a panic attack on my way home from work bc I realized my family would be home and I wanted time alone. The thought of them being there overwhelmed me. When they are home I feel obligated to spend time with them and also unable to do my own thing.

    I had my first panic attack when I was 14 years old, stress at school and bullying led to me having panic attacks in my sleep, at the time of course I had no idea what was happening but they went away, I started in therapy recently and it helps an awful lot to have someone you can just talk to and not have to hide away from! - Medication helps as well but so does just ACCEPTING failure, go and see your friends and just say you can only stay 10 minutes, this relieves the pressure of "what happens if I have an attack!!!?!" - if you feel good after 10 minutes then stay a little longer, build up gradually!

    Holy shit, you're doing something for free?
    You are offering therapy to people who need it? It is often those individuals in desperate circumstances who might need therapy the most. The problem is that you need to be fairly well off with the ability to take the time away from work or family obligations for therapy. The fact that you are offering it free of charge to those who seek it out is something I want to truly congratulate you about. I am probably one of the world's biggest cynics and usually I snicker at the idea that first world art and philosophy will cure the rest of the world's ills. In this case, however, the fact that you are doing something practical and actually reaching out to those who need it is very commendable. Don't go getting a big head "The School of Life" , but seriously and with great sincerity.......Nice Job!

      Hi there! I hope you don't get me wrong, but we must understand that from somewhere they have to get the money to make the whole thing going. Consider this: They have opened The School of Life in several countries, in one year they have already offered us 266 video lessons of life changing quality, made by filmmakers from all around the world. All of Alain's documentaries are on youtube for free. The Book of Life, where they post amazing articles, the websites Books as Therapy, Art as Therapy, Food as Therapy, Porn as Therapy, News as Therapy....They work and pay for all these things and offer them to all of us for free. They also take every single subscriber very seriously and write back to comments, for which I am sure nobody is getting paid...I don't mean to offend you, but I just wanted to mention all this for the sake of fairness. I wish you a happy 2016!

    • @Epoch11
      @Epoch11 Před 8 lety

      +HitMeQuick I should really have known better than to think someone might help someone else without being compensated. Eighty pounds is definitely out of my price range when it comes to spending money on frivolous nonsense. "Life is tough, I worry about death, my friend's iPhone is cooler than mine." I suppose it was too much to assume that there could be help provided without compensation. Money is really the answer to most problems. If you have money, you can pay for therapy, move to different surroundings, go on vacation, help family and friends, purchase health insurance, start a business, buy things for a creative project, help the less fortunate and buy yourself a fun toy that will at least for a short time help you forget that YES, you are going to die. I understand that someone who has a degree in therapy (the ability to listen and then give common sense solutions) is not going to do this for free, but it would have been nice. Sadly we live in a world where very few control a whole lot and unhappiness is rampant. Life promises nothing and usually gives you nothing. Alcohol, drugs and depression all stem from the feeling that you cannot get out of the current situation you are in at the moment. You watch tv, see ads in magazines and online only to have the notion that you are wasting your life and have so little compared to everyone else basically drilled into your brain. I like these videos, but to anyone who watches them and thinks "Wow, how inspiring" there is someone else counting their cash and living very comfortably somewhere in London town. Self-help certainly does sell because we all know there is someone out there who has ALL the answers, but sadly we are too stupid to know what they are and need them pointed out to us the inferior creatures that we are.

    This is the most sincere comment I've written.
    My parents are strongly religious and I am an agnostic. I suffer from anxiety and panic attacks and can clearly recognize the similarities with your example. I have moved on to another world view, left their religion and social circle, and carry the guilt of crushing that which my parents desperatly try to preach. I try to go easy on them and respect their faith (they're fragile), but can not take part of it. I've been seeing a therapist since getting a B on a test had me going a tiny bit bonkers. Now, I'm back on track. There is hope.
    I realized that my value as an individual doesn't spring from the opinions of others. I can be less eager to please, without hurting anybody. And I can even maintain my grades thanks to the added peace of mind. If I can do it, believe me, you can too.
    (Bonus Protip and Controversy; Don't start taking pills just because the doctors tell you. Do research. I learnt the hard way.

      +z8_GND_5296 I can tell you about sleep paralysis. The dude you see when it happens with the hat that is freddy kreuger/willy wonka/the trickster archetype/V for vendetta/the ghost of christmass past/death/Osiris/the chechire cat/ the burnt dude from mohalland drive. In psychoanalysis he is refered to as 'the real father,' but he is also the 'imaginary father' or your imaginary friend when you were little or fantasize, so he might be Indiana jones or barney depending on your age. His latest incarnation in film is Bing bong from inside out. He is also the wizard in the wizard of Oz.

      @ikesmith7381 Před 8 lety

      +z8_GND_5296 just wanna add... the funniest movie about the hat man is 'Death to Smoochie.' It is kind of a play on words from the real father to the imaginary father, but also the shift from him being a sort of dark character like in willy wonka to becoming Barney. I think that says something about a cultural shift in the west in the role of the father. He was a dinosaur in the 80's as the trex in land before time and in the 90s be became freaking barney.

    I think some people miss the point. Anxiety and depression can in fac become disordered for any person at any time. You don't need a chemical imbalance, or to be born a certain way. The way our minds are can become too chaotic and loud. We are our own worst enemies, some people have a tougher time recognizing their behaviors until its too late. What works for some doesn't work for all, but doesn't mean this person had it worse or less than others. Sometimes it takes self love and to be kind to oneself through self care and acceptance, sometimes it takes other methods. I'm honestly happy this person dealt with his anxiety issues.

Some meds and some therapy have helped tremendously. It took a while to find the right meds and the right therapist, but I persisted and found my solution and my peace. Don't be an extremist, be open minded, do your own research, listen to professionals, ask questions and be honest with yourself and your doctors. Good luck.

    I had my last panic attack about six months ago. Before I have had about a year of constatnt panic attacks experience. Panic attacks manifested themselves in different ways - high blood pressure, tachycardia, general weakness, pain in the heart area, and lack of air as physical manifestations. Also anxiety, fear of death, clouding of consciousness and perception, faint, and several times I even lost consciousness - as mental manifestations. I was almost desperate, but accidentally I discovered one book. After reading the first chapters, I was surprised how much the author’s case is similar to my case. The author himself survived all this on himself and managed to overcome his illness and, most importantly, to understand the true cause of the panic attacks. I really liked that the book does not have idle advice that you only need to pull yourself together and calm down. The book presents a specific diagnosis and specific actions and recommendations on how to completely get rid of panic attacks in about three days, a maximum of a week. This book is available on the Amazon Kindle. I understand that now paying for books is reluctant, especially with a large amount of free information on the Internet, but I think this book is completely worth its money, especially after all that I had to go through. It is completely worth the quality of life without panic attacks and the opportunity to breathe a sigh of relief with the feeling that this whole nightmare is over. I do not force anyone to buy it, but I highly recommend it. It is your decision, but why not to try, what if this is also your case, like mine. There is a link www.amazon.com/dp/B07FZH9PDS

    Interesting. I get Panic Attacks sometimes when I'm somewhere that having a panic attack would be embarrassing. I use to just get them when I thought I was going to die for some reason, but now it's also when I'm in public (sometimes) or when I can't leave on my own free will (Like in a car or stuck at work). A combination of the two always results in an overload of panic/anxiety. I guess I should seek therapy.

      +Jeremy Orr That makes perfect sense. Panic attacks are very closely tied up with agoraphobia (and claustrophobia). Agoraphobia and claustrophobia are kind of “special” among the different irrational fears in that way.
      The feeling of being in the open with no where to hide is a major stimulus for panic attacks. It’s the fear of a panic attack itself that drives panic attacks, and so when you have no where to hide when they happen, the fear is worse - which of course just helps create an attack. This relationship between feeling trapped or exposed and getting a panic attack is a fundamental part of our understanding of panic attacks, and it works this way for most people.
      A pretty good book about them is Monsters in the Closet by Mellinger and Lynn. Panic attacks usually start with one episode that starts the whole thing - and then the fear of panic attacks causes a vicious cycle. You get hyper-alert to your bodies fight or flight response. Because they are terrifying. Scared of the physical feeling of fear, which can very quickly amplify itself. The great thing about panic attacks is that they respond to treatment very well compared to many other psychological problems. So you should seek therapy, it may take trying out more than one person, but there are methods for treatment that are proven to help.
      Best of luck, it seems like you’ve already figured out a lot of how panic attacks work on your own. So I treatment would work very well for you. Panic attacks are illusory, once you poke the fear, there is nothing there. But of course, doing that on your own is very hard to do. The ideas I stated above are based on the work of psychologists who specialize in scientific, evidence-based treatment of panic attacks.

    I'm sure this works for a lot of people in which anxiety is a temporary situation related to a major life event, but not all people's brains are wired the same way. I've been having panic attacks since I was a young child regularly, and I've been through years and years of therapy, medications, and self guided emotional discovery, and I still haven't been able to get rid of them. For many people anxiety is a lifelong struggle that can't, as much as they try, be thought away. I really wish it could be like that for me, but it's not. I like this video a lot, but people watching please don't make assumptions that everyone's anxiety is solved like this.

    I imagine this approach may work for some, maybe even the majority of people that suffer from panic attacks, but trust me- there are some of us for which there *must* be some sort of physiological cause, rather than an emotional one.
    The fact that I can have one when I am simply relaxing (or trying to) at home, out of the blue, with no expectations on me, seems to indicate that there's more to it than emotions. Also, I do quite a bit of meditation, so I feel like I'd be aware of it if it were something simple like feelings about my parents or my job or my relationships or death or whatever.

    I had panic attacks for years. In retrospect, they were mostly about social anxiety. I was so wound up tight in social situations, feeling trapped, scared of how people would react or what they'd say.
    And ironically, the most difficult part of panic attacks is sometimes the social isolation. Tell people you're coming down with a cold and you get mountains of sympathy. Tell people you just had a major panic attack, ie you just had one of the most traumatic and horrible experiences life has to offer, where you stared pure terror in the face and thought "this is it," and they look at you perplexed. That really is the icing on the cake: You're dying, you're in hell, and you're ALONE.

    Here is something terribly interesting I have heard in an interview with Gabriel Rolon, Argentine's most beloved and most read psychoanalyst:
    When we say something to someone, we often say much more than we think. And sometimes much less! Or we say something totally different than what we think that we are saying! Isn't this unbelievable?? I mean take the example in this video where the young man only says:
    "If it carries on like this, I'll have no option but to head back home and live with my parents."
    Who would have thought that this one little sentence of such an understandable, ordinary complaint would be the sign of a huge trauma, the tip of an iceberg? But really good psychotherapists have the ears for that and the wisdom and the skills to use it to help you make sense of your own life story!
    It is really very scary , but also fascinating to see that the story of your life is indeed something quite different than the story you are believingly telling to yourself and to others. Things that happened way back in the past will most probably determine a great deal of your future and you'll have no idea about it. ( Unless you decide to see a shrink.) That's why I love reading books of psychotherapy tales! They seem to me even more exciting than the best detective stories! Here is a list of them I would recommend:
    1. " Love's Executioner and Other Tales of Psychotherapy" by Irvin Yalom. There are many people suffering from love pain in that book and Yalom says that dealing with patients who are "in love" is the most difficult an uncomfortable part of his work. Because you have to " wake them up" first and deprive them of all the illusions that gave them refuge and comfort till then...
    2.Yalom's latest book called " Creatures of a day". Imagine that he wrote it when he was 81. I mean after 50 years of listening to people's problems and helping them! It is a treasure really. By the way in that book he recommends several patients Marcus Aurelius's " Meditations".
    3. Gabriel Rolon's Historias de Divan is an excellent book too. One fascinating story after another. It is translated into Brazilian Portuguese and German. The German title is: " Auf der Couch".
    4. "Historias Inconscientes" is another book of cases by Rolon. Very heavy stuff though...Don't read it now if you are depressed or something. ( It is translated into German with the title " Trauer, Panik, Leidenschaft: Geschichten aus der
    Psychotherapy". )
    5. " The Examined Life, How We Lose and Find Ourselves" by Stephen Grosz. ( I haven't read this one yet. But several people say it's great.)
    6. " Let me tell you a story" by Jorge Bucay. It is about a teenager who goes to a psychotherapist. At every session he talks about something that troubles him , and the therapist tells him a story that can be helpful. Most of them are great stories!
    7. You can watch the great " What's troubling you" series by the psychotherapist Philippa Perry on Guardian Culture channel on youtube. Every video begins with someone leaving a message on an answering machine about a horrible problem . Then you hear what Philippa says to help that person. Very wise and tender advices. The animations are great too.

      @bolivar1789 Před 8 lety +3

      +Futures Hi there! Thank you very much for your message. I probably didn't express myself properly, but I didn't mean that seeing a therapist once a week would magically change your life. The change comes through the insights you get from your work with the therapist, but most importantly through what you do with those insights after the sessions. You have to work hard on yourself and have the courage and will to get deeper in understanding what hurts you the most. That itself is a very painful process, but it will give you a relief after some time if you keep being determined.
      But of course I understand what you mean with the " therapy industry". There are so many horrible psychologists out there... But still, it doesn't undermine the value of those who are very dedicated and who really do get to help many people.
      You were saying that " the world doesn't change". I do believe that there are small changes we can make in our life time, but I also very much believe in what Marcus Aurelius said:
      " Our life is what our thoughts make it".
      Thank you for your recommendations. I 'll definitely look into them.

      Hi there! Thank you very much for your informative message. I do agree with everything you say about this system of course...You make people sick in the first place and then mainly put them on anti depressants, so that you can keep exploiting them better...I can think of many examples that support your point of view...
      There is a podcast called The 7th Avenue Project, they have an episode on the unreliability of those studies, it's called " Is most scientific research wrong". The host interviews the psychologist Mike Frank and he is very critical on the subject too, like you said.
      Well, but still you know, I may seem to be too naiv, but like in all professions, I think there must be some good therapists out there that help people too .... ( I know, I am repeating myself ) I never had the chance to see one, but the books I have read, and a couple of friends who had been through it, gave me the impression. But as I said, I also understand very well what you mean . I will check David Smail. Thank you.

    Most our problems occur due to inacceptance of our personal qualities. The more we are not given a chance to be ourself, the more we develop mental anxiety. No matter who our peers are, if we don't feel quite ourself and the need to be someone else, its a better choice to leave them and be with someone who accepts us just for the way we are. This might seem complicated but we owe it to ourselves to just be, breathe and be happy.

    I get really bad panic attacks everyday. The best thing for me to do when I’m having one is for me to sit outside and take deep breaths and focus on my breathing. Being distracted away from my breathing is the worst thing personally for me. I need to focus on my breathing to calm down. Everything goes quiet when I’m having one and I can’t hear anything so I start panicking, people talking to me doesn’t make a difference because I can’t hear them. Also personally water doesn’t help either because I’m shaking to much to drink it. The best tip is to make sure they focus on their breathing cos if not they’re just panic more. That’s just my opinion from my experiences :)

    I was brought up in a reclusive, fundamentalist christian sect. It took me nine years to think and feel my way out of it to a place where I could see it's rational absurdity, but now twenty years after disavowing it, I still suffer from it. I am prone to anxiety and low self esteem I think because the idea of an all powerful, all knowing and vengeful god-monster is embedded in the architecture of my mind because I actually believed it to be true as a child. Kingsley Amis was asked once if he was an atheist, he answered "Well, yes, but it's more that I hate him". I hate him too, much as you can hate a fictional character in a book or play. Panic attacks come out of nowhere! you can be happy and relaxed one minute and completely out of control the next! sweating, feeling like your losing your mind, frantic! eratic heart beats! mine come on mostly when I am alone! and I can wake up in the middle of the night with one!, so I don't agree that there has to be a trigger for them!

    i have the same panic attacks... i always feel like i have to impress and not end up like a fool when the attention is on me. i really hate it i get nausea and i start to get sweaty it just sucks. i think i would get looked at funny if people found out i was going to therapy.. making things worst!... i would be the only one that has ever gone to therapy in my town... i even bought this pricey guitar to sort of come out of my shell and play it in front of people when i was ready, but when the time came, it only got me more nervous. now i just wish to play beautiful sad piano, on my porch while it rains in solitude...

    I'm a regular at School of Life and by-and-large love the videos produced here, (get ready for it . . .) BUT I don't know why they are such staunch advocates of psychotherapy. I had the same issues with panic attacks, once it started, it would take a day for the anxiety to go away. I went to a therapist a couple of times. At the end of the sessions I realized that she needed a therapist more than I did. A couple years later, my panic attacks went away on their own, but I'm not sure why. I am sure there are success stories out there, but I've never personally met anybody who's said therapy has helped. From my experience, a couple of good friends will give much better advice than any therapist.

      Wow! You're very lucky! Excuse me for commenting on an old comment, but I just want to put my two cents in. Anyway, from my recent experience, therapy can help a lot if you find the right therapist. I have struggled with anxiety and panic attacks for years and it worsened as I grew older. I spoke to 3 therapists. The first brushed off everything I told her and made it as if I was just overthinking and being sensitive. The second gave me advice that really did not help. Like taking 5 minutes to stretch every morning and writing out 10 things I like about myself. I recently started sessions with my third therapist 3 months ago, and she really helped me to understand why I behave the way I do and taking steps to change the behavior and lessen my panic attacks. It takes time, but I'm beginning to see and feel a change. I'm very thankful to have found her. And I've tried friends. They are great support, but mine are TERRIBLE for advice.

      Aya Infinite Thanks for the response and story Aya. I've come to the conclusion that therapy works for some more than others. For me, I often have a distrust in authority, so if an authority figure (such as a therapist) tells me something, I take it with a dose of skepicism. However, others like and thrive a personal connection with a therapist. I hope your panic attacks are a thing of the past. All the best!
