  • Most of us are anxious pretty much all the time - but frequently imagine that other people aren’t. It’s time to admit the truth. Anxiety is just a basic fact about being human.

I think a big part of it is energy. People eat so much and do so little, this energy has to go somewhere, with nothing to focus on the mind will focus on all the potential threats. Strength and exercise are the best deterrents to anxiety I have found. Get your resting heart rate down to a minimum, have the fortitude not to worry about preemptively anticipating threats. This will free you from your worry as you can focus on positive things with a steady hand.
Some Green Tea every now and then helps as well.

Pro tip: You feel anxious right up until the moment when you accept that nothing lasts for ever. There is nothing to cling on to. Forms die and are reborn all around, nothing problematic about that. Its only hard when you look for stability that does not exist.

    • @toni2309
      @toni2309 Před 4 lety +1

Or you start being anxious when you accept that nothing lasts forever. You can be very blissful as a child when some things just stay the same all the time, being peaceful about the stability around you, but then notice that things do not last forever. Some can suppress the feeling for some time making them feel somewhat less anxious remaining in blissful ignorance, or just focusing on what gives you stability. But ultimately you might need to accept, which can in turn make you anxious because you know that things could change all the time, but you do not know what or when.

  • @CameronOrrmusic
    @CameronOrrmusic Před 9 lety +170

To some extent, I agree, however, I think our anxiety and stress is also artificially manufactured or at least very greatly heightened through our social conditions. Capitalist society tells us we always have to be productive (and for someone else's benefit, at that), monetizes and regiments our time, creates deadlines that are only important to profit seekers within the context of competitive markets, and makes us feel as if every moment that is not economically valorized is lost, or suggests that if we ever relax, we are lazy and morally inferior. With the amount of wealth that exists through efficient labor processes, we ought to be able to work less, worry less, and relax more, but instead capitalist vampires suck on our labor and make us work and worry even more.

Anxiety is good sometimes because it pushes us to do better, to test our limits - to leave our comfort zone. But most likely it plays a part in contributing to people isolating themselves.
We are just over-dramatizers of who we are and what we do, I guess.

  • @violetcitizen

While the core of anxiety is very similar to everyone around us, the specifics, the personal approach to anxiety and the factors causing it can be quite unique, making it difficult to communicate and understand other people's anxiety. Personally, I do not find consolation in talking to others about my troubles, as most conversations flow through a passage of misunderstandings and comparisons, and usually end up in "be grateful, some people are in a worse position than us", a conclusion that suggests that if people cope with larger problems than ours, we are weak and fragile to succumb to our moderately stress inducing problems.
That said, thanks for the video, it is a pleasantly brighter approach to the acceptance of our "eternal" anxiety, and one that (if/when I manage to find more calm and rationality) I would like to wholeheartedly adopt. :]

Wolfie Saying you shouldn't be anxious because other people suffer more than you is like saying you shouldn't be happy because some other people are happiere than you. And the factor that relief tension is in being understood and heard, which you havn't experiences yet since you get compared. Struggle, anxiety are all subjective experience you can't compare them empirical, all kind of people react differently to the same struggles.

anxiety is much more complex then most people think. I have allot of friends (including my self) that have suffered from anxiety for years with no "apparent" mental reason behind it. After years of studying and researching I learned and realized that the brain is the most important organ of your body and is directly connected to your other organs, especially the gut and liver. Chronic anxiety / bipolar / depression is usually due to chronic inflammation, either directly in the brain or in one these organs. Eating a plant focussed diet (not vegan!!) with allot of healthy fats can help incredibely well.
High intensity exercise can also work wonders since many of us have adrenal fatigue without even realizing it. By exercising HiiT 2-3 a week and setting a healthy (6-7 hour) sleeping pattern you can really improve your anxiety (and your life in general!).

*argh youtube deleted my very lengthy comment* (actually, it most likely was my own fault)
      In short:
Don't get me wrong, plants can be a great addition to your diet but
going vegan can (and almost always) will destroy more then it heals. I
know quite some people (including myself) who went vegan
Physics is showing us just how dependant the human body, and especially the brain and skin, are dependant on an omega 3 called "DHA", which is not commonly found in plants (fish eat certain algae).
Evolution wise it is pretty logical that we are dependant on fish...after all we originated from the sea.
The main reason "DHA" is so important over other fats is due to its ability to carry an extra electron which it captures from sunlight. While this might sound "hocus pocuz/science fiction" it is actually been proven that the key to healh is an interplay between light, water and magnetism. Google Jack Kruse if you are really interested in improving your and your loved ones health.

This sounds a bit fatalist. I don't think anxious is inevitable - some anxiety some of the time perhaps, but not constant anxiety. Alain, I think in one of your books you wrote about the stoics, and they seem to me to give the best tools for getting rid of anxiety. Their ultimate goal is tranquility, and I think by using some of their ideas one can make great progress in that direction. So my advice for people who feel too much anxiety: read some Seneca.

This reminds me of the Buddhist idea of the "Four Noble Truths". Essentially, the summary is that life is suffering and that true peace is found not in eliminating suffering, but in becoming accepting of it, and simply understanding its persistence in our lives. We don't get over anxiety by making our lives perfect- perfection doesn't exist. We learn to accept anxiety, use it as a means of encouraging ourselves towards goals, and overcome one piece of anxiety at a time. Amazing video as always!

Sorry, but Anxiety isn't meant to be a permanent feature in life. Saying it exists as a permanent feature because we have ancestral fear of being eaten by predators is a lengthy postulation for something much more simple- we're in our head all the time and disconnected from our bodies and nature.
Ever notice that children aren't born with chronic anxiety? We're made to let out our feelings and be connected to the body like children, not bottle our feelings in and suck in our tummy for cultural-aesthetics that cuts off our breath. It's only after we're pushed in to an unhealthy society that people develop these sort of traumas. Perhaps the problem isn't with people, per se, but with the world that we've all been forced in to that is also destroying the world.

"Its like you took a bottle of ink and you threw it at a wall. Smash! And all that ink spread. And in the middle, it's dense, isn't it? And as it gets out on the edge, the little droplets get finer and finer and make more complicated patterns, see? So in the same way, there was a big bang at the beginning of things and it spread. And you and I, sitting here in this room, as complicated human beings, are way, way out on the fringe of that bang. We are the complicated little patterns on the end of it. Very interesting. But so we define ourselves as being only that. If you think that you are only inside your skin, you define yourself as one very complicated little curlique, way out on the edge of that explosion. Way out in space, and way out in time. Billions of years ago, you were a big bang, but now you're a complicated human being. And then we cut ourselves off, and don't feel that we're still the big bang. But you are. Depends how you define yourself. You are actually-if this is the way things started, if there was a big bang in the beginning- you're not something that's a result of the big bang. You're not something that is a sort of puppet on the end of the process. You are still the process. You are the big bang, the original force of the universe, coming on as whoever you are. When I meet you, I see not just what you define yourself as-Mr so-and- so, Ms so-and-so, Mrs so-and-so-I see every one of you as the primordial energy of the universe coming on at me in this particular way. I know I'm that, too. But we've learned to define ourselves as separate from it."

What most people don't know about anxiety is that stress and anxiety aren't the same thing.Anxiety is like stresses big bad older brother. Anxiety can effect people for large amounts of time and can lead to health issues and panic attacks.Keep in mind that this is coming from a person with O.C.D, I say "with", instead of suffering from because I don't feel I'm suffering, quite the opposite.Dealing with anxiety I think made me a better person.ANYWAYS I'll stop rambling about that!Stress unlike anxiety doesn't last that long, anxiety is just basically a stronger, longer lasting, stress.BESIDES that people respond to stress differently too, the responds are FLIGHT,FIGHT, or FREEZE. Depending on the situation you will behave differently, understanding yourself and your behavior is one key thing you need to know to control and calm your anxiety. Gaining self control helps as well, not with just anxiety, it might help you maintain other emotional issues, like your anger, etc.ANYWAYS I'm sorry I ramble... A LOT... More than the average human any ways. So if your still reading this, wow, good for you. THOUGH I heavily doubt anyone is reading this... SO YEP that's just something I wanted to put out there...*nervous laughter* Yep...*Begins to walk away slowly doing finger guns*

Markus, To reduce overthinking negative thoughts be careful what you feed your mind. Avoid comparing yourself with others, must share bottled up emotions with one person, reduce watching negative social media and avoid constipation as it affects the mind. Your breathing is closely related to the brain [mind] and gives relief from stress-overthinking. For a relaxed mind observe the sensations of your incoming--outgoing breath at the entrance of the nostrils for 10-15 minutes or more. You can sit on a chair or lay down anywhere, be as still as possible, eyes open or closed--No deep breathing. Don’t fight your thoughts. Never meditate with expectations. Make it a lifetime habit to observe your breath day and night before sleep, when travelling, when reading, at the workplace etc, etc. Best wishes--Counsellor.

I think it helps to see that our brains are designed to help us survive not to make us happy. Once I came to that realization it helped me shift my perspective and allowed me to have more appreciation for it rather than judge the mind. As the heart beats and the lungs breath so the mind thinks. Thoughts in and of themselves are not inherently right or wrong and from that standpoint we can begin to take the energy out of it, neutralize it, and go on doing the things that matter to us and that we enjoy

I think our anxiety can be controlled, through practise of silencing ones mind whenever we become concerned about the future or an unpleasant thought arises from a past experience. If we abide purely in the present moment, anxiety can not be, because there is nothing to be anxious about. This is why meditation is known to help anxiety, because meditation puts you in the present moment and allows you to think in clarity without the unwanted inner voices taking over.

This is a wonderful video, and hits the nail on the head, but I agree with other commenters: anxiety is not a constant state (Though I love and agree with the idea we should translate anxiety as a sign we are alive).
I thought anxiety was a fact of life until I met my previous partner, who taught me to 'keep in contact' with the idea that every emotion is finite (particularly when I start to feel alone and helpless in emotion); there is always an end to what you're feeling at any one time, also to not indulge in negativity, and that over all, we'll probably come out more on the side of better than worse. In short, everything will be okay. The more I had faith in this idea, the more emotionally resilient I became, and now my faith (in happiness, and things being okay) keeps me somewhat afloat. It's a leap of faith, and things aren't perfect, but so long as I hold onto that idea; that things will be okay (eventually), life is infinitely more liveable, and I am not bound to a scared dark inner cell.

It is wise to recognize the origins of anxiety in biology such that we may understand it. That understanding can be used to cultivate an acceptance of the nature of life.
I also very much agree with Rob Smith before me. We give power to the fetters of our mind and the fires of our desire because we do not know of another way. We become subservient to what is ultimately a protective instinct when it really should be used ONLY in service to our well-being. This is a fundamental difficulty in the transition from natural selection to culture as the primary force of change in our existence.
We live in a society where many of our instincts go unused in their original context. When we do not take the time to understand the scientific and psychological foundations of those urges within ourselves, we proceed to attach ourselves to these long-distanced future hopes to well-being, rather than actively living it.
I suppose what I am advocating is a cross between science and zen buddhism because both actively seek an active, observant, and consistent understanding of our reality.
Only when we gain an understanding of things as they are do we gain the power to influence what they can be.

did you ever think your anxiety is a sign that everything you've been accustomed to and love is not really where you belong? a fear that's so big we refuse to look at it so instead this warning system resorts to reaching in the only way it can, through the inescapable background feeling you carry around during the day. perhaps you never broke away from social, familial, and other structures of belonging in order to truly find yourself
the higher self is not a moment of enlightenment but rather the path to your greatest version, and as a being it would make sense that our lives would cause us anxiety when think everything is as it should yet somehow it all feels wrong. because deep down we are aware we're not doing what is best for us and our path and ultimately everyone else's
together we stay stuck in prison of anxiety, constantly in search of something to soothe our ever random worries, which are the result of misplaced understandings of our anxiety, through a social consciousness we constantly remind each other we're doing the right thing when it's quite apparent to our great minds below that we are not, but since we fear this mind mostly due to the fear of change to the requirement to let go of things we cherish and routines that make us feel comfortable
By freeing yourself, you allow others to follow in your wake, we see this phenomena with many things like sexuality but it's time for a new renaissance, a time of true untethered self discovery which will ultimately lead to a brighter more peaceful world, but for now go search for what really moves you without fear of what anyone else might think, society give you the chance to mistakes as a child and it's your right to continue to learn without fear of mockery (since that's hard to change over night, embrace whatever might come your way with open arms) knowing full well going through these changes will transform you beyond your imagination into the super hero you dreamed of

I am not diagnosed with anxiety but I always feel like I'm about to have a panic attack. The other day I knew I was going to be picked to get an award as I had seen my name on a certificate whilst walking to my seat, in the assembly, there was 275 ish students and when it got to the part where I was about to go up, my heart started beating so fast and I could feel it it was like it was trying to break my ribs and I could feel it in my throat. My legs went like jelly and I felt like if I was going to try and stand up, my legs were going to collapse. I finally had to go up and I just couldn't breathe, I could hear people laughing at me at I felt like everyone was against me. Today, in my ict lesson, we were on the computers (obviously) and one of my friends found a really embarrassing picture of me and I wouldn't have minded it if only my really close friends saw (they were sitting by me) but she showed it to the whole class and the teacher saw and I was about to cry, my heart and legs went and once again I couldn't breathe. I don't know what I should do bc every time I tell my mom and dad they think I'm being stupid but I'm not and I don't want to feel alone.

I too was looking for an answer to this question since a while. Look what I found:
All anxiety is imagination. In understanding of the present, energetic action starts and anxiety disappears. That is why some wise man has said, ‘Action is the antidote to despair’. So, if I really understand what is going on and what is going on is going on ‘right now’, then from that understanding action will result; clear, direct, forceful, energetic action. And when am in the middle of the action there is no anxiety, no disappointment, there is only the beautiful and smooth flow of action.
But the brain loves to be lost in anxiety, it does not want to be in action, it only wants to be ‘anxious’. To remain in thoughts, in a constant flux, in a search; is the nature of the brain.

Exercise helps me tremendously when I begin to feel anxious. Just getting outside and running, or playing a sport with friends really helps to take your mind off of whatever it is that's worrying you. Not to mention that when you exercise your brain releases endorphins which are natural painkillers. But, the most important thing to remember when exercising to relieve stress, is that the exercise has to be fulfilling. Make sure whatever activity you're engaging in, is one that you enjoy doing.

Add to that a general lack of exercise.
Add to that a sense of insignificance now we have such an broad understanding of the world.
