Insects spawned (in caves) at start are passive until you poke them: you can leave them indefinitely if they're far enough away from your base with no problems (until they start to breed out of control). It's a useful source of infinite bug meat for kibble if managed carefully (BTW haygrass takes a surprisingly long time to grow, so set it up early if you want to do taming/ranching!)
The 'rule' for infestation spawns used to be something like any constructed/claimed within something like a 30 tile radius, or maybe more: it was huge! Bright light would discourage a spawn, as would excessive heat/cold; dirt/homezone made no difference: the key was a player-constructed/placed/claimed object with all adjacent tiles unhidden (to allow for AD walls). IDK if this has changed with the DLCs, but it seems to hold true for vanilla (check wiki for details!)
Elephants are incredibly useful! They'll feed themselves & haul on the local map, subject to their zone restrictions; they carry over twice as much as a horse when caravanning & they can be trained for combat tanks, which is useful vs caravan ambushes as well as locally. They're easy to train & tame (only skill 7 required), & if killed in combat or farmed will provide huge amounts of meat, tough leather for dusters etc & tusks for a bonus! If you set up a breeding herd (not difficult at all) they live sell very well to merchants too. I always make taming elephants a priority if available locally, & may set up another disposable site specifically for that purpose if not

I believe Rimworld lore also says amongst other very common modifications to humans, radiation resistance is one of the most.

To answer your radiation question: natural uranium has a specific radioactivity of 25kBq/g. Your smoke detector kicks out about 37 kBq, so, say, a 1kg lump of uranium is about as radioactive as ~700 smoke detectors, so being near one isn't really much more dangerous than standing in the smoke detector aisle of a DIY store.

I came here to say something like that, a handful of raw uranium ore actually has about as much radiation as 10 bananas

The range for pawns to eat from a table is ~34 in either X or Y direction (idr if it just raw cardinal distance or does trigonometry)

47:00 natural uranium isn't very radioactive, the thing that's used in nuclear plants is a specific isotope that exists in less that 1% of ore. It has to go through enrichment process to get more of that isotope. And ingesting any toxic metal is a bad idea in general, but ingested radioactive toxic metal starts bombarding your insides with alpha particles that don't usually penetrate your skin. Fun fact, since uranium isn't absorbed by your body, ingesting small amount in a powder form will make your poops radioactive. Not a health advice

4x5 bedrooms are big enough for non-royalty pawns.

I hope they eventually let you bring back captured monsters from distress signals as far as I know there is no way to bring them back currently
    Maybe a ghostbusters type trap

how do you get certain skills to highlight with their passions??

I'm 99.9% sure that if you use buried conduits (only 2 steel vs 1 for regular) you will not get a conduit-based "Zzzzt" again. Also not targeted by raiders, fire, etc, etc, etc. Well worth the 2 steel.

Quill's pawns have their weapon on the back - is this a new patch feature or a mod?

It's a mod. I think its a combination of a sidearm mod and a separate holster mod . You can look at his mod list in the earlier videos.
