- Shohei Ohtani is an incredible baseball talent. He is doing things that we have not really seen before. Shohei Ohtani also has a lot of rookie cards. That is not a bad thing. There are a lot of players who come from years that have a lot of sets and parallels to target, and the cream always rises to the top. This meeans that there are some rookie cards that are better than others. In this video I break down why Shohei Ohtani rookie cards are so confusing, if I think he is a good buy, and I share my thoughts on which rookie cards I personally like moving forward.
By far, these are my favorite type of videos you put out. When you focus on a specific player, dive into their stats, and then strategize for the viewer the best cards to target and why. I assure you, as an avid collector this is exactly what’s lacking in the CZcams world and I just pray the views reflect his and you keep them going. 🙏🏼
i opened a chrome base ohtani rookie a couple years ago. it's not huge, but i cherish it!
I always wanted a bowman chrome ohtani auto from when 2018 bowman came out, but he was soooooooo expensive! Even more than he is right now. People were paying 5k+ for raw pack pulled base and I remember golds and oranges selling for 50 - 75K RAW!! After 2020 when he had his surgery...a majority of people were calling him a bust and his GEM bowman chrome pitching auto went below 1k for the first time ever....I debated about buying a couple, but was still unsure of how he would come back. They were talking about not letting him pitch anymore, and he wasn't a great hitter yet either...Well his 2021 year started so strong and his cards started flying! I bit the bullet and picked up a base gem chrome auto for 1700 and haven't looked back. I still kick myself I could have had 3 for the same price 3 months before, but at least I have one lol....Good video Scottie!

My kid and I will forever remember being feet away from his 21st HR in 2022 at Kaufman in KC. It landed behind the wall accessible only by maintenance. We at least got a selfie with it in the pit behind us😅

Saw two games live last year when he started. Was great and one of them he even had a HR in same game. Really incredible athlete.
I loved grabbing a TON of his rookies during his 2019-20 slump. Definitely was a brief buyers market.

Appreciate all of the great information! On the lookout for good Ohtani buys but his market is so high right now - especially coming off the WBC excitement.
100% agreed. His cards are not cheap right now... It makes it tough to target them, but there are always deals out there. We might have to wait until mid season or until he has a slump. Thanks for watching Phil!

His gold card is appropriately valued around $500 right now. Compare these prices to trout and it’s still a steal in the long term.
His tools gold label rookie is one of my favorites because the image has him both pitching AND hitting on the front of one card
Another hitting variation thats a nice card is his 2018 Topps LA Angels team set variation. Nice batting shot in home uni.
Thanks for this video, was eager to see a new one from you on Ohtani. I was buying a little before this season and last year. I have 5 Heritage chrome /999. Just bought one the other day and it didn’t pass eBay inspection, go figure. Bought it the day of the game. Let the ohtani shenanigans begin. Anyways I like him still now and think in time they will mature. Bought several low end cards if his, the base heritage in a 9 and a 10. Love this pose, and I bought a archives PSA 10 for $95, received yesterday. I think I am going to rest the buying and go back to some other better buys as you mentioned and I was already thinking of this. I really like the heritage card of his especially the chrome and the refractor. Still room to grow IMO with these being that serial number is all the rage.
Amazing Video Scott! Ohtani got me into baseball and baseball cards! Do you think the 2019 Topps Transcendent VIP Party Shohei cards are still considered his rookies? Even though it is a 2019 set, they still have his rookie logo.
He's one of my favorite players, but definitely a difficult buy right now.
its too late now, wait until the offseason unless he gets injured or something.
His prices were stagnant from October '22 to February '23, slowly went up then exploded after WBC performance.
I wouldn't consider buying anything until November/December '23
His cards bottomed January/Feb ‘23. I was tracking Bowman chrome all year peaked $2000, bottomed $292, now headed up currently $550.

I pulled a rainbow foil Ohtani Flagship Rookie… from a mystery box.
His Bowman Chrome rookie has an image variation also of him with a carrying bag slung over his shoulder. Cool looking card and was pretty hard to pull.
Hey Scott, love the videos. Question though, what about 2018 Topps Update card #US189. It doesn’t have the rookie shield, but shouldn’t that be considered a rookie card being it’s a 2018 card?
I've got 3 paper and 1 chrome of his Update cards. I, like I'm sure a lot of other folks didn't expect his prices to spike up to pre juiced Tatis card prices. I guess I could spare a paper and pick up a single or 2 of other players.

I am usually a Topps only guy for modern cards, but I got so tired of all the Topps variations and confusion with Ohtani, so I just bought his Bowman Chrome Card #1 PSA 10 because:
- it is card #1
- there is no debate whether it is a true RC or not
- he is batting
- it is not photoshopped to look like he is in an Angel uniform

@@angellamyers9758 I did the opposite. I sold a Black 2018 Topps RC Debut of him that I pulled from a Topps Update pack. I didn't think he was capable of doing what he is doing without getting injured or worn down.😞

Just wanted to mention that his 2018 Topps 3D is one his most overlooked and undervalued RC to date. Card uses the exact same image from his Topps Update and looks stunning in 3D format. On top of that, P/R is also very limited with copies estimated to be around 269 (about the same as his Topps Sapphire RC). Kind of a hidden gem in my book. 💎

Shohei is one of the few guys that I actually WANT to PC, but his cards are in the stratosphere. I also worry about a dip in his production. I only have a few of his cards, a few base Chrome rookies, but one of the coolest cards in my collection is a 2013 BBM rookie in an SGC 10. I have an Ichiro BBM rookie from 1993 on my watchlist but it's a bit pricey. I'm really loving this infusion of Japanese and Korean talent into MLB, makes it fun to watch the game with these different styles of play.

me too. i remember every week IN 2018 i would buy 20 cards of his Topps moment cards. IT WAS CRAZY!! I bought like 100 of his 2018 topps living set card. i believe Acuna broke his record for topps living set card, still the record?!! Ohtani will have a monster season. I also hope Acuna will put up a monster season too..i bought like $20k of Acuna rookie cards too. I bought $40K of Othani rookie cards in 2018. then glyber torres, but NO MONEY FOR JUAN SOTO,.

Very timely video Scott, thanks for putting it out! This is a great example of why I get frustrated with ultra modern cards...way too many set issues and variations. I'm still a bit traditional about this, I only collect the first issue as a true rookie card. So since he has Topps and Chrome base cards, then I don't collect either Update cards because those are not true rookie cards. Just my rules to follow to make my life easier!

No matter what happens to the card hobby prices overall. Ohtanti is starting to be recognized as the Jordan of baseball. Some of my coworkers have asked me what Ohtanti baseball card should I buy ? I know of five people who bought Ohtanti rookie s that don’t even watch baseball, and don’t own any other cards except Ohtanti cards. My point is the global demand will drive up the prices even for the more common cards. He’s different than anyone one else in baseball. No other pitcher in mlb even bats anymore.

Ohtani is the only modern player that I personally collect. I have always been a football card collector or vintage baseball, but Ohtani is special. I don't think I will see another player do what he is doing in my lifetime. Nickname a comet after the dude... Ohtani's Comet.
I worry about the pitching aspect. Many pitchers develop serious arm issues and when you couple that with his plate appearances, injury is a major possibility which would obviously destroy his card values.
@@fastfootedone The chance of career ending or career altering injury with Ohtani is highly likely. His card prices would surely fall. Would that change the value of his talent or his cards in my eyes? Nope. Because even if his next at bat were his last or his next pitch his last pitch, in my opinion he is the best baseball player and one of the best athletes that has ever lived.

I picked up the 2018 chrome update refractor /250 because it's my favorite image. I like the red jersey and pose, but I'll probably go for the debut refractor as well since hitting is such a big part of his legacy
I also bought that same card (HMT1) because of the pose.
I too love the Update refractor set since they are so rare and limited. My only concern is just the downwards pressure from the regular Topps Chrome release. Either way, that card is awesome. Congrats on the pickup!
I got into the hobby when I seen Ohtani play 2-way & started to collect his RC back 3 years ago. I have a few of his Topps chrome I picked up, there were to many versions of his cards so I just stuck buying refractors instead. Shohei Ohtani is indeed a rare player & I understand why so many call him. 🦄💯
me too. he showed up in 2018, i fell in love with him. i bought $40,000 of his rookie cards in 2018!!! then $20K for Acuna Jr., then some gleyber torres, and no money for Juan Soto. i'm quitting my cpa job so i could unload my ohtani and acuna rookie cards....

What are your thoughts on Ohtani's rookie Topps Heritage action/image variation? I pulled one his rookie season and prices fluctuate between $400 and a $1,000+ in a PSA 10. I'm holding it because I pulled it and it's a nice card but am curious as to what you think.

I love the Bowman Chrome Auto cards.
I would add that his 2013 Japanese Rookie cards. Particularly his 2013 BBM Flagship #183 series is more than niche market. All of Japan collects these and the American Market is waking up.
With a base print run of around 10,000 and two nations to covet these cards, the value is there in the long run.
Exactly! US collectors think he’s oversupplied but it’s the opposite when you consider Japanese collectors
Those 2013 BBM cards are his only rookie card period,if you consider Japan ball a professional league,I think people now realize they are!

Hi Scottie, I have Shohei's Topps 3D rookie card - is that considered not flagship? It's the same image. I heard there's less than 300.
That's tough. I have always viewed flagship as series 1, 2 , and update. Some people do not count the Topps Chrome sets as flagship, but I do. I would say it is questionable because it didn't have a main country wide release (only available on topps.com), but that doesn't mean it is awesome or worth any less!
Purple hot box refractor of heritage is quite good as well

Agreed. He needs at least two more Ohtani like years for the staying power. If he were to slow down now then people would cool off of his cards. Either way, he is almost there!

My favorite is the Beam Team. Beam Team is iconic with basketball but don't know why it isn't with baseball. Plus the baseball Beam Team has variations vs the basketball versions.

I think his advent calendar rc is undervalued. It has a wonderful image and has a low print run of 2163. I also like the team set rc

The obvious he’s the only two way player. How babe Ruth is revered as the best there is no doubt if Ohtanti can continue this for a couple more years. It will be set in stone he’s the GOAT. He got me back into watching baseball again. The league needs him and they need him off the Angels. It’s mind boggling how many people still don’t know who he is in 2023. I’m sure the language barrier doesn’t help. Now your starting to see him on New Balance commercials etc. he will become more of a household name. I also said that in 21 when he was mvp and on the cover of those video games. But that apparently didn’t happen. Or was not as impactful as I thought. The international market is a huge factor as well. He could get hurt and be the next Bo Jackson. I personally look for cards of players who I believe in. I personally don’t pay attention to the hype

The best Ohtani I have is his 2018 Bowman Best Neophyte Auto /50. The Best of Autos book for more but I'm still happy to have a RC Auto

I like his rainbow foil topps rookies. They're semi-affordable and look great. But it's so tough to see his autos worth so much more than everyone else. That doesn't seem sustainable.
Great video although his 2013 rookie cards are definitely not niche. Just not understood by American collectors so they ignore them instead of embracing them.

The team set has that "hitting" one that looks exactly like the base. I think that's going to be the chase card.

Try Topps Finest Base RC. I brought em raw for $30. And a Gem PSA for $110.
I bought 2 of his card in 2018-2019. 1 is a psa 10 rookie pink refractor and the other 1 a psa 10 bowman. Each 40$ Men theirs prices went up lol

The Update has historically gone for more which is why it was higher. I have recently felt strongly towards the series 2 only beacuse it was first and matches more images. There are people in the hobby on both sides of the aisle. My only wish is that Topps did not introduce two different cards. Thanks for watching!
The biggest reason I LIKE the Update chrome is that the base refractors are numbered /250. I think that is AWESOME. I also like that the Topps Chrome Update auto is the same image as the Topps Chrome Update base card. The issue is that it is a sticker.

I know the 1st true topps chrome rookie should be worth more however when you reference no parallels in update should be going after makes it a bit confusing.

That’s my favorite. Has such an awesome look to it. Action photo & close profile pic, P/DH label, nice refractor touch, plus the fact it’s a throwback design. I picked up an SGC 9.5 for like $57 a few weeks ago

I managed to get a few RCs in Gem Mint 10 (Heritage Chrome, Finest Base and Topps Holiday Metallic Snowflake.) Brought 2nd year Topps 3D and a Vintage Stock 2020 I sent to PSA which is now a Pop 1 PSA 10. (#'d/99). My 2022 collection is nothing but SPs and up (most under 200 copies). I'm proud I got my hands on the 22 Stadium Club 1st Day Issue SPR/10!
I have an Ohtani RC from 2018 Heritage High Number. It's the team name alternate color variation PSA 10 it has a pop of 41.
