- Shohei Ohtani has A LOT of rookie cards. The challenge at times is trying to pick the best one for the budget that you have. In this video we draft our favorite Shohei Ohtani rookie cards and want YOU to tell us who you think won! Chris here - the Acuna draft might break my brain!! Hahaha
His pitching cards will be more valuable as time moves on. He will be better known later in career as a hitter as he moves away from pitching. That tells me the pitching cards will be more sought after because it will be more unique and a reminder of why he's the unicorn
As much as the hobby loves hitting cards, it’s hard to argue with your logic 💪🏼

My fave is without a doubt the 2018 Topps Chrome Complete Set Retail #700. Amazing swing pose, iconic gaze into the moon-shot distance. Just the coolest for this guy.

You all made solid picks. I wish I could afford any of those cards. I will say one card I like also is the Hidden Gems SSP out of 23 Topps Chrome. I pulled it out of a blaster box. I love sealed wax also. I have lots of 18 Bowman and Topps baseball sealed. It wouid be fun to do a 2018 wax draft also. Wish I could afford Sapphire also but I think my 18 Chrome Jumbos and 18 Chrome Update Megas sealed are still cool. Thanks guys for sharing. Hope Ohtani can stay healthy. Go Dodgers!

Great video! I’ll admit a little bit of my soul died when no one picked the the 2018 Topps Update Independence Day parallel numbered to /76. A great photo of Ohtani, with perhaps the best looking parallel design ever. I may need a moment of silence to recover…. Keep up the great work, though!!!!

Great video!! A few notes...super cool to hear yall rank the Sapphire base, Power Performers (owned in Gold PSA 10), and 2019 Colorblast so highly. All 3 are pivotal pieces of my Ohtani collection, with a notable shoutout to the 2020 Stadium Club Chrome (non-auto) as it's such a cool card.
I forgot who it was, but man. When they mentioned CardsHQ owning 3 of the 2019 Colorblasts...I felt that. I've owned mine for 3 years, and before CardsHQ opened I was volunteering to help unload some pallets and stock the showcases since 2 of the owners are great friends. To stock the showcase they handed me a 2 row box filled with slabs ranging from $50-10000, and I happened to take out TWO of the 2019 colorblasts. I've only ever seen one other one in person since I've owned mine. Just awesome!

Great video guys, every pick was a winner but I gotta give the W to Jeff for his 700 pick. A lesser known non-rookie card is his Global Grandeur GG-1 from the recently released 2023 Topps WBC set. It's extremely short printed (25 base, 16 parallels, 41 total printed) and the image captures his celebration after striking out Trout to end the WBC. It's a really cool card that captures the defining moment of his career (so far!)

I think Scottie won by virtue of his first pick. That Bowman auto will stand the test of time as the best, period. I pulled a redemption for a green refractor #/99 and won’t ever sell it. I also don’t mind “pajama cards” and have an on card auto RPA #1/10…with an O from the nameplate for the patch, from National Teasures. Never seen one sold so have no idea of its value…but love it!

It was hard to name a winner, but I did like Chris' pick of the 2020 Topps Stadium Club Auto and T-Pott's last pick of the 2018 Topps Fire Flame Thrower. I'm surprised that no one picked the 2021 Topps Project 70 #491 (Samuari). I enjoyed this type of video and especially the player, but if you could add these cards to a visual board at least for the end of the video, it would be easier to judge who won.
True but we didn’t know who would get which cards, so we couldn’t have that ready.

Gentlemen, love the videos. I might have missed it, but can you discuss the 2017 Bowman Mega Box Otani Chrome card showing him playing for Japan in WBC? It’s such a usual card as it’s from a regular US Bowman Chrome set… but before all of the regular RC’s and such. Where does this unusual card land on your lists of long term collectability and growth potential value wise vs some of those other more mainstream cards? Thanks, Damon

Chris here - that’s a great card but it’s in a category all it’s own so it didn’t work for our draft.
You’re right it’s Ohtani’s first US card so that will always make it special.
My concern is it could eventually be treated like the 2010 Team USA Bowman Chrome cards of guys like Lindor, Olson, Cole, Harper - and their later bowman chromes on their MLB trans sell much better.
The Ohtani seems to be holding steady around $1500 these days.
Do you like it long term? It will always be his first!
@@SpitballinCards I actually do like it long term. I agree that I see some similarities to the USA Bowman Chrome guys, but he’s basically a God in Japan (and that’s likely to never change). Having him in his Japan uniform, but being his truly first US card, it’s chrome, refractor finish etc… I just feel like it’s under appreciated actually and now that he’s a Dodger for life, it could appeal to Dodger fans because he’s NOT in an angels uniform. He has so many different RC, now with Dodgers if his popularity rises, I just see this really standing out as something special as his card market gets insanely more crowed over the years. Bonus, there are only four variations, purple 250, green 99, orange 25 and black 1/1.

Chris here - I love those jumbo cards. I’m a big fan of short printed oversized jumbo cards. There are great images on some of those from Stadium Club and Opening Day.

@SpitballinCards Well, you guys were picking out of his rookie year but Ichiro/Ohtani cards look to age very well, with both being baseball's biggest international stars of the millennium. Those Refractor type SP variations are cutting edge. Facts. You have great taste.

Wow 5 people, nice quorum. Have you considered having guests? I think if you want to talk prospecting the Lets Talk Wax guy would be a great guest. Obviously the sports card dad and Chris Sewell Collector Investor Dealer would be great as well hes probably my favorite sports card youtuber even more than scottie b haha he`s just so relaxed and the least pretentious only TPott can match that energy. I continue to look forward to the day when everyone is honest that the bowman chrome cards look universally bad. The pictures are boring or airbrushed and it’s just a cheap looking card.

Given your business model i agree baseball makes little to no sense. From what i can gather from your vids you buy players on the up and look to be out of the card within 60 days. I'm pretty sure that if i look at your auctions i know precisely what you were buying 60 days ago. Won't know what you're buying today until i see your ebay listings 60 days from now. I know you know this but I'll point it out again. The cards that you profit on will not hold their value. There's nothing wrong with that. Especially since you don't hype the cards and make bold unsubstantiated claims. Baseball is actually more stable; i can buy into a wide range of serial numbered 2023 Bowman Chromes 1st auto's and hold them. I have literally a three year window before the value diminishes significantly. Im pretty sure we both agree that whatever Wemby cards are selling for today they will be worth less three months from now and even less six months from now. Panini Prizm PSA 10's of any of last years football stars are worth significantly less than during the season. They will never reach those peaks again. It has always been the case that football cards rise in value faster and lose their value faster than any other sport ; that was true in 1998, 2008, 2018 and today. I have no reason to look but i can guarantee that except for a handful of very special, extremely low serial number Mahomes cards, everything else and especially the base cards out of Prizm and Select are probably at 20% of their value at their peak and will not go up ever again. There are probably 50 Ohtani base cards (and he is not the only one) whose value is stable or slowly advancing in value. Baseball card collectors are more sophisticated meaning they are less likely to get swept up in hype. They focus on images, variations, situations depicted, auto, non auto, it is fascinating. And for bbn you boring af and not profitable. Is it nuts to pay $20k for an Ethan Salas /25 Orange Refractor, or $2k for an /75, perhaps. In 5 years the card could be legit $250k and $20k respectively. Salas 2nd and 3rd year cards will also have real value if he is the next Acuna. There is no Patrick Mahomes card from his 2nd or 3rd year that will be worth more in 5 years than it is now. I enjoyed your rant. Had to watch it a few times to get past the irony to whatbyou are really trying to say. No baseball for you!
