- 2024 Topps series 1 is here! Topps Series 1 is the first indication of baseball being back as it is the first release of the year. In this video I break down 2024 Topps Series 1 and discuss the rookies, autographs, inserts, print runs, and more.
Important note for context on the number of cards printed since there's 350 cards this year vs 330 last, total number of base cards is around 314.8 million this year compared to 414.5 million in 2023, so that's 100 million total base cards less, or about a 24% reduction. That seems quite significant, but do know cards per pack are lower now and cards per hanger box are 59 now compared to 67, so Fanatics is still getting their money with price increases.

You used to get 5 golds per hobby box (2019) and I think now you are not guaranteed 1 per hobby box. Meanwhile the price keeps going up. The value of opening product is just not there anymore.

Agreed across the board, overall good design and happy to see some regression in print runs. Would just like to see fewer parallels, but that might be me
I have a wrapper from 2011 update there was 1 gold in every 3 packs back then 🤣
Also another problem for 2024 topps is for set builders who want to build a master set has gotten more impossible to build each year which is causing more and more set builders to give up. Big gamble trying to find each product big hit. I guess with tic tok age people have short attention spands and they need huge excitement to release endorphins each passing year as well. In the 1950s completing a 300 card set I could imagine without the stimulation of the internet, TV, ect I am guessing the excitement of completing a baseball set was a happiness not experienced today :)
I opened 2 jumbo boxes. I like the design. It seemed to be light on color/ numbered.
One weird thing to note, the Silver Pack 35 year stamp still says 1988-2023. Not sure if that will affect anything as I feel its too late to change them now.
I really like this years design and the semi-foil aesthetics of the cards. I bought a few retail boxes to satisfy my needs to open new packs. I won't be buying anymore because it seems Topps increased the print run this year because we still haven't seen Team Set packs or full set boxes released yet.

I pulled an on card auto of Heston Kjerstad on the base 1989 insert. I believe I'm going to hold on to it for a bit to see how he turns out

Are you a Colorado fan? I pulled a rookie on card auto of Ryan McMahon " Congratulations you have received a 35th Anniversary 1983 Topps baseball autograph card from 2018 Topps". I'm not tryin to unload it but what do you think of the player? I got it in a hobby box so I might have got a relic card instead and I'm happy about that.

You didnt mention the Celebration of the Kid subset. Those inserts are 5 and 6 bucks on Ebay right now. 24 card set all with Griffey in various stages of his career in the classic 89 topps design.

It would be cool if you did a "what each product should cost" section as well. $175 is way too high for the jumbos. I've been seeing 1 to 2 numbered cards in each. The hobby's are even worse at $100. I believe guys like you would be doing a great service for the hobby by informing people what they should realistically be paying instead of breakers justifying the cost with the ceiling of extremely hard pulls. Demand is what drives price. There is no what it "should" cost. Simple economics will always dictate actual price, whether you agree with it or not. If you don't like the price then don't buy. If others are buying it, the price won't come down. Silly request
I started with flagship and will always pick some up every year. No its not gonna pad your 401k ... but that also isn't what the hobby started as much as every card bro would like to believe.

So glad Junior Caminero doesn't have a RC in this set aside from the silver pack mojo as I am sitting on a PSA 9 (10 for auto) Green #/99. It is unfortunate however that it appears the Rays are going to start him off in the minors unless he blazes through spring training.

Pulled a green foilboard Marco Luciano and a handful of the top 3 rookies yesterday. Independence Day looks sick in person and only a few cards were in bad shape. Sadly a Gelof was one of the casualties.

Great entry level product for kids and new (and old) collectors. Not a good investment product. All good if you look through this lens at the product.
The base are amazing! Pictures don't do the cards justice. The neon is metallic and pops off the card.

I really like this year's design a lot. On the other hand, the Easter parallels look like trash (much like the Halloween parallels did).
I have a dumb question. What are sticker autos vs. on-card autos?
Sticker Auto is where the player autographs a clear see thru sticker that comes in sheets then gets thrown on a card meaning the player never touched the card & they can put the players autos on any cards they want. While on-card autos are exactly that, cards touched & signed in person by player. People prefer on-card autos

Well a month out, the hidden gems are indeed there. No one has mentioned the shrinkflation ( fewer cards per pack in some formats like jumbo -15%, fewer packs per display and hobby box, etc which accounts for print run of cards less, but boxes made about the same, and srp up. ) The " first card " screw up. No first card on front, 1/1 inverted on back. And I have yet to see any of the promipised Soto and Othani base sp's in their new uniforms. FANATICS has screwed something up every year. Plus the unannounced parallels in their own marked blasters. Screwy year so far. Plus after a jumbo, 6 fat packs, 2 blasters, and 2 hangers, I am still 8 cards short of a base set. Unbelievable.
It’s a nice little product. Some fun inserts. Little splash of color. But it is what it is. A cheap product meant to amuse the collector with limited resources. It isn’t Chrome, or even Bowman, and to most price points it is a waste of money.

Looks like Topps didn't update the 35th anniversary stamp on the mojo silver pack cards. It says 1988-2023 instead of 1989-2024. Oops!!!

Not worth it imo. Print runs are only an estimate based on odds. I'd bet its higher than what you claim. Just more worthless parallels at an increased cost. I'll wait for 24 Chrome and the possiblity of Holliday and Honey Nut Chourio in the mix.
Those new Fanatics Jersey (patches) will look AWFUL in trading cards
I used to buy cases of cards to rip and I have only opened two boxes since 2019 because price went up to high. You was able to get topps hobby boxes for $60 to $75 and Jumbo hobby between $80 and 150. I was just buying singles off of ebay however now I am 99.9 vintage cards and wrestling just because it is a stable market and I would cry if i spent hundreds of dollars on a card and the value went down to $5, I do not think I could look at myself in the mirror taking losses like that. I am not a gambler though unless we are at a card table playing texas holdem face to face.
I never seem to pull anything good out of topps. Ever. Lol
If you want to make money on cards, forget it. Buy stocks instead!
You can buy most of the singles you’d want for cheaper than one box, why open any? Sure it’s fun, until you realize you’ve just burned money

There’s only 3 rookies that might be good the rest are who are they besides that I’m disappointed for a flag ship product that they aren’t creative and no more other hits.
I just gave up sports cards and life is stress free! No more flipping, holding, hoping for value…No more spending $249 and getting $117 worth of value.
Try it. Sell your stuff for what you can and never look back.

The base cards look like trash, they don’t look new, they look like they were from the 1980s with the black and neon colors. I’ve always hated the 1980s look and feel. Also the other cards don’t look that great either, it just doesn’t shout “cool and collectable”
