    This video shows the last steps to adapt a 'simple sewing machine' into a more functional, to do furniture and car upholstery. The 'roller/round presser foot' is so versatile that after some practice and patience, you would be able to perform different sewings.
    I have met many upholsterers carry out beautiful jobs with this 'round presser foot', including me...but, we should not forget that technology, give us better ways of sewing our upholstery projects...I am referring to 'walking-foot sewing machines', especially designed to do heavy-duty upholstery.
    These videos are mainly aimed to people who do not have much chance of buying an expensive machine, but they have the willingness to do upholstery and start a business.
    In a next tutorial I will show how to do the different upholstery sewings with this machine.
    I hope this information is useful!

    I have the same 241 and changed the motor out to an electronic motor. I had to get a very small pulley for the motor to slow it down enough to get a controlled stitch. I liked your idea of converting it to a roller foot and I have the parts to do it next. Very nice video on upgrading this type of commercial machine! Thanks for your videos.

    Your Videos are very helpful! I do knot know if you mention this elsewhere but in general, what brand/needles do you use for leather? It is very difficult to look on the internet and figure what will work for the 641-12. Also do you think the roller foot would help with sewing fur? Specifically sheep fleece sewing onto very heavy backing. Duck or felt.

    Hello Chechaflo, thank you for your videos. You have taught me a lot. I am having an issue with adjusting my singer 241 12 to do automotive upholstery. I did everything as your videos instructed and that all went well but when I attempted to change the stitch length my handheld gets jammed once the plunger is pressed down. I am unable to move it forward or backward. Please advise me as to what I could do because I have no money for any other machine and I just got my first paid project but customer wants long bold topstitching. Thank you so much Maestro

    • @Cechaflo
      @Cechaflo  Před 5 lety +1

      Hello Harold, It also happened to me and others. What you have to do is 'force' the big wheel back and forth to release it while the 'stitch length button' is pressed down. While you press down the button another person could help move the wheel with bare hands. If too tight, then it would be necessary to hold the 'wheel' with a 'pressure jaw locking pliers'. To not damage the wheel surface cover it with a rag or scrap of leather or vinyl.
      Please, let us know what happened.

      czcams.com/video/4ah-sIpRGnA/video.html
      If these things are OK, some screw could be loose...this mechanism has a direct relation with the feed dog...try to carefully track the movements...I'm going to check in my machine to know what could cause this problem.

    I can see how this roller foot can be useful. With the links on another post you gave links to where to get them too. Thank you. I could sew memory foam in the middle of 2 pieces of cloth that way compressing it as it sews, for an example. Does the 241 of yours have the same needle plates as the singer 15 and singer 31 ? It seems singer has the same plates from 1880's on up to this machine you have. On the links you have below, I looked at the prices on used machines. I got a very good deal at $200 CDN ($175 U.S.). It might not look good, but I can fix it so it does with work. Thank you again Cesar

      +Boniface Gatimu I think so, as mentioned if the machine is 'all metal' (those old singer are excelent)...I remember I did car upholstery with my mom's sewing machine with no motor, just a pedal moved by my feet back and forth...most of these machines come with the 'round foot' and are used by shoemakers...it's matter of doing the little adjustments to do a heavier job.

    Disculpe don César tengo el mismo modelo de maquina Singer 241-12 e igual lo uso para tapicería pero la máquina al momento de coser esponja de 1/2 pulgada mas el vinil, cose bien pero despues me rompe el hilo de arriba de lo desenebra, porque sucede?

    • @Cechaflo
      @Cechaflo  Před 5 lety +1

      Puede ser que al bajar la aguja y por el hecho de coser material mas grueso se doble ligeramente la punta y esté pegando en el 'orificio' de la placa. La solución sería agrandar ligeramente el agujero para que la aguja pase mas libremente y no pegue. O bien comprar una placa para el modelo con una agujero un poquito mas ancho.
      Si no pega en el 'agujero de la placa' entonces, puede suceder que al atravesar material mas grueso, la aguja al ser muy delgada se dobla hacia un lado causando que el 'gancho del cangrejo' lo llegue a raspar y se deshilache o rompa.
      Para cada aguja su hilo correspondiente. Por supuesto si uso una aguja gruesa va a coser hilos de diferentes grosores, lo único desfavorable es que va hacer huecos muy grandes. Si utilizo un hilo grueso con una aguja delgada, con un material delgado no puede pasar ningún rompimiento del hilo. Pero si va atravesar material grueso, este hilo se atascaría en medio del material (vinil y espuma) y al llegar a su punto de descenso el hilo va a estar apretado y el 'gancho' lo va a raspar y romper.
      Analice estas posibilidades y creo que va a encontrar la falla.

    Hi, I have been following your tutorials for some time and I learn something new on every single one of them, thank you for taking the time to teach us how to use the machines, God bless you!
    I do have a question regarding the "adjusting the length of the stitch" on my Singer 245-3 which is similar at the one you are using in this video, and you adjusted the "stitch length" without any issues.
    I have the manual and just as you did I pressed the plunger as I rotate the balance wheel, I can feel when the plunger drops but my issue is that then I am not able to turn the balance wheel on any direction, is stuck there and the stitch is very long and I cannot adjust it.
    As old as this machine is (1940?) it is new to me and I want to be able to use it, I think that once I figure out the stitch length issue, I should be in pretty good shape to start sewing in it with the correct stitch length.
    Any advice will be greatly appreciated, once again thanks for all your videos, they are great!

    • @Cechaflo
      @Cechaflo  Před 6 lety +1

      Hello Jose, You are not the only one who has faced his kind of issue. The 'big wheel' is stuck and it seems it wil not move anymore...it will be necessary the help of a partner...while your partner is pressing the 'button' you would have to force the 'big wheel' to the front or to the back...if the stitches are too short, it means you have to force the wheel forwards...on the contrary, it the stitches are large the wheel should be moved backwards. Grasp the wheel with both hands and do it.

    • @Jose-yq1lk
      @Jose-yq1lk Před 6 lety +1

      Thank you so much for your reply, I tried that and did NOT work, the wheel still won't move, I beginning to think that either the grease inside that part of the machine is so hard and the mechanism is really stuck or is someone has messed up with that part? I opened that top part and saw the plunger mechanism that drops into a groove inside the machine, the top part has a little screw and I am wondering if the screw was changed of position? which way is the little screw inside the plunger supposed to be facing?
      This screw is the one on the tip of the plunger in the middle, right between the end of the two oiler tips.

  • @Cechaflo
    @Cechaflo  Před 8 lety +7

    Hi Miguel,
    I am going to try to answer all of your questions.
    The Industrial Singer 111w150 Sewing Machine at a the price of 200 USDollars, is a bargain...provided that, it is in good shape with all of its parts, ...besides you are mentioning it is walking-foot, ideal to do upholstery...BTW, I never had one, but with the trade mark is more than enough to express a judgement. The pfaff 145 is an excellent german sewing machine, more ideal to do general upholstery and sew leather...the price is OK if everything is original and in good condition. The consew 226r is also a good original, heavy duty, japanese machine, and the price is ok.
    If I were to choose one from the three, I'd rather choose the pfaff 145 ...it depends on the money in your pocket. 1. The common size to do upholstery is the 'standard polyester thread 138' for a needle size 18(110) to 22(14); a thicker thread can be used to do 'on top stitches', also polyester number 207 for a needle 22(140) to 23(160)
    2. Regarding the best contact cement, we have two, one that is applied by hand with a brush or spatula and the other very fluid applied with a painting gun...about trade marks, I cannot recommend, because, I am in Mexico, and suppose you are in USA.
    I use a yellow glue which comes in cans or bottles...check these links if you are in USA :
    www.homedepot.com/p/DAP-32-fl-oz-Weldwood-Original-Contact-Cement-00272/100125525
    www.tandyleather.com/en-usd/home/department/leather-cement-glue/2525-360.aspx
    www.ebay.es/itm/Petronios-Master-All-Purpose-Cement-Glue-Shoe-Repair-Adhesive-Glue-4-oz-/291064753112
    Do a test beforehand trying out one of these products.
    3. The common stitch in upholstery is 5 mm...it could be 6 mm or on the contrary 4 mm
    4. We can do upholstery with 'an industrial, simple transportation, regular sewing machine' but, it would be better to sew heavy materials with an 'industrial, triple transportation/walking foot, sewing machine'...the feet compound help us to defeat/overpass bulky parts of material.
    Hope it helps,
    Cesar

      @Cechaflo  Před 7 lety

      Por supuesto que si puede hacerle algunos ajustes que sean necesarios para hacer trabajos de tapicería. Hace muchos años llegué hacer tapicería con una maquinita Singer de las negritas...la suya es industrial y mas fuerte...a lo mejor solo necesita cambiar la plaquita base, unos dientes un poco mas altos, una aguja mas gruesa y un pié de presión de rodaja. Cuando ocupe volver a coser materiales delgados, nada mas cambiaría otra vez estos aditamentos y todo seguirá igual.

    • @jesusacosta558

    • @Cechaflo
      @Cechaflo  Před 7 lety +1

      Puede ser una aguja 120=19 o 140=22 ...no olvide que el hoyo de la 'placa base' va de acuerdo con el grosor de la aguja y esta junto con su hilo debe pasar libremente. Hay placas que vienen listas con diferentes diámetros de hoyos para que pase la aguja. Si no consigue va a tener que ampliar con una broca de 'carburo de tungsteno', porque esta placa es un poco dura y además trae un baño de cromo. Cheque que la aguja no vaya a pegar en el 'gancho' o costado del 'porta bobina'...de ser asi tiene que regular.

    • @Cechaflo
      @Cechaflo  Před 4 lety +1

      You have got a good sewing machine. There would not be much problem to attach the roller foot. Do not forget to change the needle plate for a new one that has a wider hole to easily let the new needles(18, 16) to cross down through.
      While the machine is off you could carefully check (moving it by hand) if the thicker needles really touch something beneath or it is the rubbing against the plate hole.
      If it is really touching something beneath it would be necessary to move the shuttle a very little to right side (there are three little bolts that fasten the shuttle mechanism).
      I have realized the Brother machine you have is similar to the Singer I show in my video.

      El botón localizado en la parte superior es el regulador de puntada. Se presiona y al mismo tiempo se mueve un poco el volante de adelante para atrás hasta sentir que el botón se hunde mas. En este momento, si movemos el volante hácia adelante la puntada que hacee el peine nos dará una puntada mas larga. Si se mueve hácia atras nos dará una puntada mas pequeña. El movimiento es gradual si lo hago llegar al tope hasta atrás, la puntada sería cero.

    • @Cechaflo
      @Cechaflo  Před 5 lety

      Perhaps, when the needle passes the layers of leather bends a little and could be rubbing the plate hole. It would be necessary to change the needle plate with a hole lightly bigger. Besides, check out if the 'hook point' of shuttle is not rubbing the needle.

      The ideal sewing machine to do upholstery is an industrial, flat bed, single needle, triple transport (walking foot) sewing machine.
      czcams.com/video/U3HBXBDDKoo/video.html
      New ones are very expensive. I think the budget you mentioned is more than enough to get a used machine in perfect condition.
      I have found this link for you:www.advancedsewing.com/usedsewingmachines.html I have realized they sell good trade marks, such as Juki, Consew, Pfaff, Brother, Adler, etc.
      It is a matter of doing your own research by getting in touch with a professional vendor from this store.
      Another handy option would be to get in touch with John from Lucky Needle. He could provide you good assistance in order to get a sewing machine at an accessible price. I have realized he is a sales representative of some good trade marks.

      No, no tiene reversa para rematar. Esta máquina la usan mucho para coser ropa y en zapatería para pespuntar el cuero/piel en la fabricación de zapatos. Si es necesario 'rematar', lo que se hace es dar una puntada hácia adelante y luego levantar el 'prensatelas/pié de presión' para jalar el material unos milímetros y sobreponer otra puntada por la misma que se hizo al comienzo. Muchos tapiceros usamos este 'truco' para dar 'remate de costura' en las orillas.
