  • Converting my Singer 331K, 31K Sewing Machine from a standard foot to a roller wheel foot for decorative leather sewing. I am attaching new feed dogs and needle plate, as well as removing the standard foot and replacing it with a wheel or roller foot. This will make the machine far better for doing tight curves in leatherwork.

    I put this roller foot on my singer 241-12 and had to do modifications to the roller foot itself to clear the needle bar. But I got it working good. The new feed dog and plate were horrible so I ended up using the original feed dog which was close to the new one

  • @gilbertodiaz-castro626

    I had never seen one of these rollers installed, thanks for sharing. Now, you had trouble adjusting the height of the presser foot because you didn't follow the normal procedures. To ensure the presser foot is properly adjusted you must keep at least a 1mm distance between the presser foot raising cam and the contact point before you tighten the presser foot bar clamp, I just stick a thin screwdriver between the two contact surfaces and it works like a charm.

    So you're going to loop the loop on a sewing machine - wearing a flying jacket I hope ! This film ( I NEARLY put "video" - oh dear ! ) whilst demonstrating a roller wheel, also has been a "fantastically" useful demonstration of the mechanics of the business end of the machine. ( Do you remember back in the 1960s when there were decent programmes on television, there was an old time music hall on BBC, with a gentleman Leonard Sachs dressed up as a Victorian with a starched mustache who tapped with a gavel and introduced comedy acts - he always used big words such as "fantastically", and whenever he did so, the audience gasped ? If HE can say "fantastically, so can we ! ) Anyway, your latest descriptive film going to be useful when I finally get around to maintaining my 1896 flying shuttle machine ! Yes there was a manual for it on the ISMACS website - thank you SO much for pointing me in the direction of that information source ! Beautiful, geometrically correct stitches that you are already getting on your machine in your film. Lovely to see it, and to hear the equally perfect click clack of the mechanism. A joy to see and to hear ! Thank you for all of this ! Time to enjoy a mug of tea to celebrate - cheers !

    Thanks very much for all your videos. I have a question about my 31k I recently bought.
    I'm wondering about the type of needle I need (regular or industrial ? ), I'm sewing leather, and I'd like to be sure to use the proper accessories with it !
    Another question, I'm sewing (trying to) oiled leather, not very thick but bolky and stiff, with a 120 leather needle (regular, not industrial), it goes fine when I sew one layer of this leather with another type of leather on it, but 2 layers of oiled leather and the needle is barely impossible to move, even by hand, and it sounds like something is touching the needle underneath (the hook probably, not happening with other types of leather...). Help !?

    • @harryrogers
      @harryrogers  Před 2 lety

      Hi Claire...sorry I no longer have this machine, but you need to Google the correct needle, as I recall it was an industrial type. It you go for an raw type you will get a nice stitch for leather. It sounds like you need a thicker needle for the thick leather as it might be flexing.

      @harryrogers  Před 4 lety

      Good idea to file the dog plate...it was quick and easy to grind off the side of the dog, but I think your suggestion of filing the plate is better. I did not mark as I know what works...what really caught me out was the different shape of the hook recess...I assumed it would be the same as a genuine Singer part, but the arm indent was very slightly different. Thanks for your comments. Rgds Harry
