  • This is a mid 50's era Singer 44-9. The 44 series is basically a short arm version (the bed of the machine is a couple inches narrower) of the 31-15. The -9 variation is "medium duty" walking foot machine. The machine can easily convert between a walking foot, standard foot and a rolling foot by simply rotating the presser foot bar.
The 31 and 44 series use a class 15 bobbin and pretty much all the parts are interchangeable with the exception of the linkage bars that run parallel to the front of the machine (since the 44 is narrower than the 31).
The machine is easily sew through 2 layers of 9oz veg tan leather, 12 layers of cordura and more. If you run across one -- grab it, they're not too common and are very capable. Be aware though that the bed size is narrower than most tables so you'll either have to find a table that fits or make one yourself.
    It's a phenomenal straight stitcher

Do you have a video converting roller to walking foot? I would like to convert my cylinder arm machine to a walking foot, currently using a roller.

Unfortunately this will not work on unison feed walking foot machines. The singer you have chosen is a top and bottom feed and not a compound or unison feed machine. The needle feeding mechanism will not work with this roller conversion. You have to change the plate, dogs and other and its too cost prohibitive.

Is this set up superior to the walking foot?

@@happyvideos7791 not even close. When you really think about it, the only thing moving the material on this style of machine is that one row of feed dogs. In a compound walking foot, you have the needle, top walking foot and feed dogs all moving the material, hence the nickname "triple feed".
